Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of liver toxicity with no side effects, according to studies.
Acute liver toxicity is a condition characterized by the harmful effects of a substance or organism induced by a single or short-term exposure.
Liver toxicity, on the other hand, is caused by long-term exposure to a substance or substances, including alcohol inducing the destruction and interruption of liver tissue regeneration, leading to fibrosis and cirrhosis.
The liver is the largest internal organ with self-regenerative properties. It only plays an essential role in the production of bile to aid digestive functioning, but also filters out blood from the digestive system before passing them back to the heart and other parts of the body.
The most common chronic liver diseases in the Western world are non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and hepatitis C infection.
According to statistics, NAFLD affects 75 to 100 million Americans in 2017. Approximately 80% of obese and 20% of normal-weight people have NAFLD.
Believe it or not, nearly 2.4 million Americans, or 1 percent of the adult population were living with hepatitis C.
The most common cause of acute liver toxicity is Acetaminophen overdose in the United States, leading to acute liver failure.
Dr. Flores YN, the lead scientist in the examination of risk factors for liver disease among Mexican adults in the US and Mexico wrote, "Excessive alcohol consumption is a risk factor for liver disease, but only 60% correctly identified hepatitis C, being overweight or obese, or having diabetes as risk factors".
And, " Identifying the specific risk factors, levels of knowledge, and prevention activities that affect specific racial/ethnic populations is important in order to effectively target efforts to prevent liver disease".
Betanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the protection of the liver against toxicity, researchers examined the betanin (a natural pigment) mitigated effect in Organophosphates (OP)-induced hepatotoxicity in primary rat hepatocytes.
Administration of betanin (25μM) significantly increased liver cell viability, inhibited the expression of ROS formation and LPO and restored cellular antioxidant levels.
When it was used alone, betanin protected the liver against OPs-induced hepatotoxicity through inhibition of oxidative stress and mitochondrial protection against inflammation.
In order to reveal more information about betanin (from natural pigments) anti-oxidant properties against paraquat-induced liver injury in an animal model.
The study included rats randomly divided into four groups: a control group, a paraquat group, and two groups that received betanin at doses of 25 and 100mg/kg/day three days before and two days after they were administered paraquat.
Paraquat-induced liver toxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats without treatment of betanin showed significant liver toxicity observed by elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels and an increase of enzyme associated with phase I drug metabolism reactions.
In other words, the injection of paraquat led to an unbalanced ratio of free radicals and deleted antioxidant enzymes produced by the host evidenced by levels of oxidative stress.
Injection of betanin not only inhibited the historical change and the aforementioned conditions, but the phytochemical also protected the liver cells against mitochondrial damage and apoptosis-inducing factor protein levels.
Dr. Han J, the lead scientist based on the finding wrote in the final report, "Betanin had a protective effect against paraquat-induced liver damage in rats. The mechanism of the protection appears to be the inhibition of CYP 3A2 expression and protection of mitochondria".
Taken together, betanin may be considered a supplement for the treatment of acute liver toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bromelain Processes Cytotoxic and Antiproliferative Activity Against Peritoneal #Mesothelioma, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Peritoneal mesothelioma is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the abdomen (the peritoneum).
Most cases of peritoneal mesothelioma begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the peritoneum, before penetrating into the deeper layers.
At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, patients with peritoneal mesothelioma are asymptomatic.
However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of abdominal pain or swelling due to the larger size tumor pressed on the nearby nerve tissues and blood vessels, changes in bowel habits, feeling of fullness and night sweat accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, such as unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal discomforts, and loss of appetite.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, compared to other types of cancer mesothelioma is rare, with approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma in the US each year. The asbestos-related mesothelioma only accounts for less than 0.3 percent of all cancer diagnosed in the country.
Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for less than 20 percent of all mesothelioma cases.
Dr. Rodolfo Fonte, the lead scientist in the examination of the risk of asbestos-induced peritoneal mesothelioma in a construction worker, wrote, "Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive asbestos-related malignancy. We present the case of a 65-year-old man who developed recurrent ascites after having been exposed to asbestos in the building industry for > 40 years".
And, "Occupational history and immunohistochemistry are helpful for the correct diagnosis, which, in turn, is important in relation to prognosis and treatment (adoption of new integrated procedures that seem to promise prolonged survival and increased quality of life), and in relation to medico-legal issues and occupation-related compensation claims following asbestos exposure".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, researchers examined the effects of Bromelain (cysteine proteinase) effects on Mucin 1 (MUC1), a glycosylation-dependent protein that confers tumors with invasiveness, metastasis, and chemoresistance.
In the study in which researchers compared the efficacy of the application of various concentrations of bromelain after 4 and 72 h and combinations of bromelain and cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin or 5-FU) at 72 h, MUC1-expressing MPM cell lines found that bromelain increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin significantly in cell lines.
Compared to the aforementioned inhibition, combining fluorouracil with bromelain did not show a significant increase in cytotoxicity.
In other words, bromelain improves chemotherapy depending totally on the types of drugs used for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma.
Furthermore, bromelain used alone also showed a significant effect in inducing cell death by apoptosis and autophagy.
On pancreatic and breast cancer cells, injection of bromelain also adversely affected the viability of MUC1 expressing on both cell lines.
Based on the findings, Bromelain used alone or combined with other chemo drugs might have a strong effect on the barrier function of MUC1.
Collectively, bromelain inhibited the progression and proliferation of peritoneal mesothelioma by blocking the activity of gene MUC1.
Dr. Pillai K, the lead scientist said, "Current evidence indicates that bromelain may have the potential of being developed into an effective anticancer agent for MPM".
Taken together, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Honey Shows a Strong Effect in the Treatment ofAcute #Cough in Children, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural whole food that processes a significant activity in reducing the risk and treatment of acute coughing in children with no side effects, some studies suggested.
Coughing can be a natural and reflex reaction to expel phlegm from the airway or a result of viral and bacterial infection of the upper airway.
A cough that lasts less than three weeks is considered an acute cough.
A chronic cough is a medical condition that lasts more than 3 weeks. In children, the condition can be caused by allergies and sinusitis, asthma, whooping cough, cystic fibrosis, aspiration, acid reflux, and a blockage in the airway.
The most common causes of acute cough are cold and flu. However, the chronic condition in adults can be the result of smoking, sinus infection, allergic rhinitis, and diseases associated with upper airway dysfunction, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, and long-term use of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for the treatment of high blood pressure.
The most common symptoms of coughing in children are accompanied by an itchy throat, runny nose, watery eyes, sore throat, or rash.
Most parents use over-the-counter medicine for the treatment of acute coughing in children such as antitussives and expectorants
However, according to the warning from the FDA, warns that children younger than 12 shouldn’t take codeine products to treat pain or cough because of the risk of developing potentially life-threatening breathing problems.
"The FDA recommends against the use of codeine in youths ages 12 through 18 who are obese or have conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (blocked airflow during sleep) or severe lung disease. These risk factors can increase their chances of developing serious breathing problems when taking these medications".
Therefore, if your child experiences severe coughing, you may want to check with your doctor before applying any over-the-counter medicine. Most cases of acute coughing in children are recovered within a few days.
Please note that there’s no cure for the common cold caused by viral infection. You will get better on your own in a week or two without needing medications and your child will get better on their own in a week or two without the need for medications.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners many people.
On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of acute coughing accepted by children without inducing any side effects, researchers examined the effectiveness of honey for acute cough in children in ambulatory settings.
The study includes the search of available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing honey, given alone, or in combination with antibiotics, versus nothing, placebo or other over-the-counter (OTC) cough medications to participants aged from two to 18 years for acute cough in ambulatory settings.
Out of hundreds of studies reviewed by the researchers, only 2 studies were selected for the review.
Compared to dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine, and 'no treatment' on symptomatic relief of cough using the 7-point Likert scale. honey was a much better medicine than no treatment in reducing the frequency of cough and exerted similar or better effects to those of counter medicine.
However, mild adverse events were found in seven children (9.3%) from the honey group and two (2.7%) from the dextromethorphan group.
After taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Oduwole O. the lead scientist said, "There was no significant difference between honey versus dextromethorphan or honey versus diphenhydramine".
Furthermore, in the concerns of the side effects of honey and over-the-counter medicine, researchers examine the effects of two kinds of Iranian honey with diphenhydramine (DPH) on nocturnal pediatric coughs and the sleep quality of children and their parents.
A total of 87 patients included in the study were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: Group 1, Honey type 1 (Kimia Company, Iran) (n = 42), Group 2, Honey type 2 (Shahde-Golha, Iran) (n = 25), and Group 3, DPH (n = 20).
Each group received double doses of the respective treatments on two successive nights, researchers indicated that
* Honey type 1 was superior to DPH in improving all aspects of coughs, except the frequency,
* Honey type 2 was more effective than DPH in improving all aspects of coughs, except the sleep quality of the child.
* There was no significant difference between Honey type 1 and 2 in any aspects of cough relief.
After examining the standard validated questionnaire completed by the parents before and after treatment.
Dr. Ayazi P, the lead author wrote in the final report, "Honey may provide better cough relief than DPH in children and improve the sleep quality of children and their parents".
By comparing the above studies, there is no doubt that honey may be used for the treatment of acute cough in children.

#Fennel EssentialOil Promotes the Balances of the Ratio of the Levels Free Radicals and Antioxidants, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Imbalancing the ratio of the free radicals and antioxidants in the facilitation of oxidative stress was associated with the increased risk of the early onset of many chronic diseases, scientists found.
Fennel is a species of Foeniculum Vulgare, belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), and native to the shores of the Mediterranean, may process a potential effect in improving the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the human body, therefore, adding a portion of fennel on your daily diet should be helpful in reducing the risk of diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke ...
Dr. Moylan JS, the lead author in the study "Oxidative stress, chronic disease, and muscle wasting", wrote, "If an overproduction of oxidants overwhelms the antioxidant defenses, oxidative damage of cells, tissues, and organs ensue. In some cases, oxidative stress is assigned a causal role in disease pathogenesis, whereas in others the link is less certain".
Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons produced daily in our body, reactive oxygen species, and reactive nitrogen can induce a domino's effect by stealing an electron from other molecules, leading to a continued function that cannot stop until they are paired or inhibited by the presence of antioxidant molecules.
If the generation of free radicals exceeds the protective effects of antioxidants and some co-factors, the process can cause oxidative damage accumulated during the life cycle, leading to the disruption in the function of the cells.
There are many risk factors that can increase the overexpression of free radicals, including fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, air pollutants.
Therefore by changing your diet pattern with more in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and less in red meat and processed foods and maintaining an active lifestyle, you can absolutely balance the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in your body, thus decreasing the risk of many related chronic diseases.
In the review of the traditional use of fennel essential oils (EO) possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammable oil and insect repellent, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties, researchers launched a comparison of essential oils and their main constituents in Citrus aurantium, C. limon, Cupressus sempervirens, Eucalyptus globulus, Foeniculum vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris.
EO of fennel showed the best free radicals scavenging capacity compared to others.
Fennel EO also was most effective against lipid peroxidation along with EO of C. limon.
Interestingly, after an in-depth analysis, researchers discovered the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the EOs were plant species-dependent and not always attributable to the EO's main components.
Additionally, in the evaluation of chemical constituents from essential oil from (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum, Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce, and Foeniculum vulgare var. vulgare, researchers suggested
* Trans-anethole, estragole, fenchone, and limonene found highly abundant in all of the examined oils demonstrated strong antioxidant activities in the DPPH radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation, and metal chelating assays
* All 3 tested essential display significant antimicrobial activities against two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.
Finally, in the study to assess the efficacy of medicinal plants used traditionally in folk medicine as natural healing remedies with therapeutic effects such as prevention of cardiovascular diseases, inflammation disorders, or reducing the risk of cancer, researchers found that fennel in comparison to other medical exerts a strong antioxidant effect through many of its bioactive compound such as phenolic compounds
However, Dr. Škrovánková S, the lead scientist in the concerns of some conditions that may affect the herbal quality, said, "The antioxidant properties of medicinal plants depend on the plant, its variety, environmental conditions, climatic and seasonal variations, geographical regions of growth, degree of ripeness, growing practices, and many other factors such as postharvest treatment and processing.
Taken together, adding a portion of fennel into your diet may have a potential effect in increasing the levels of antioxidants in your body and countering the risk of overexpression of free radicals.

#Ginger Inhibits Cervical Cancer by Inducing DNA Damage of the Tumor Cell and G2/M Cell Cycle Arrest, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural and pungent spice for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, according to the studies.
Cervical cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the cervix tissue.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately, 13,240 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed. The disease causes the death of 4,170 women in the same year.
The 5-year survival rate for women with invasive cervical cancer is 92% if the cancer is detected at an early stage. About 46% of women with cervical cancer are diagnosed at an early stage.
Most cases of cervical cancer are detected during the annual physical exam during the Pap test.
The exact cause of cervical cancer is due to the alternation of the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the cervical tissue. Researchers do not know, Why? some women are more susceptible to the onset of cervical cancer while others do not, even have the same health conditions and family history in the same family.
However, researchers do know that certain risk factors such as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, the increase in age, herpes infection, smoking are associated with the onset of cervical cancer.
Ethnicity also plays a critical role in cervical cancer, the American Cancer Society wrote, "In the United States, Hispanic women are most likely to get cervical cancer, followed by African-Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders, and whites. American Indians and Alaskan natives have the lowest risk of cervical cancer in this country".
Furthermore, some researchers suggested that oral sex which refers to sexual activities involving the stimulation of the genitalia by the use of the mouth, tongue, teeth, or throat also has a strong linkage to cervical cancer. Dr. Rajiv Saini examined the link between oral sex and cervical cancer and wrote, "Current research suggests that oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers. HPV is ubiquitous, with 120 strains isolated from human beings, about 40 of which are in the mouth and genital tracts".
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of cervical cancer examined the antitumor activities of 6-Gingerol, a potent nutraceutical isolated from the ginger on human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines with or without wortmannin, rapamycin, and cisplatin.
Injection of 6-Gingerol showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity on human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines.
Combinations of 6-gingerol with wortmannin and cisplatin showed additive effects, while rapamycin, showed 50% cytotoxicity that was equivalent to IC50 of 6-gingerol alone.
Treatment with 6-gingerol resulted in G2-phase arrest in HeLa cells. 6-Gingerol, wortmannin, and rapamycin treatment showed almost two-fold higher expression of a pro-apoptotic protein in the tested cell line.
The finding strongly suggested that 6-gingerol may be a safe and potent chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive compound acting through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in cervical tumor cells.
In order to reveal more information about ginger Anti-cervical cancer properties, researchers examined the polyphenolic alkanone, 6-Gingerol (6G), presented in the pungent extracts of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) anti-tumorigenic and pro-apoptotic activities against cervical cancer.
In vivo. 6G potently inhibited the proliferation of the HPV positive cervical cancer cells.
Additionally, 6G was found to inhibit the chymotrypsin activity associated with the induced degradation of tumor suppressor proteins, reactivate the gene involved in regulating the cell cycle and tumor suppression, and suppress the protein involved in cellular response to cytokines, chemokines, and stimuli.
More interestingly, injection 6G also expressed an inhibitory activity against cervical cancer cell lines through inducing DNA damage of the tumor cell and G2/M cell cycle arrest and potentiate the cytotoxicity of cisplatin
6G treatment induced a significant reduction of tumor volume, tumor weight, inhibition of proteasome that breaks down protein, and tumor-suppressive gene accumulation in HeLa xenograft tumor cells in vivo.
Dr. Rastogi N and colleagues said, "Our data underscore the therapeutic and chemosensitizing effects of 6G in the management and treatment of cervical cancer".
Taken together, ginger with abundantly bioactive compound 6-gingerol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of cervical cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Onion #Extract-Based Topical Gel in the Management of Surgical Wounds, Scientists Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Surgery is a medical practice that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate or treat an injury or disease
The aim of the medical procedure is to promote bodily function,
The most common types of surgery in the US
* Appendectomy is the common surgery that removes the appendix in patients with acute inflammation of the appendix due to infection.
* Breast biopsy. A biopsy that removes breast tissue to diagnose cancer.
* Carotid endarterectomy is used to remove the blockage from carotid arteries
* Cataract surgery is to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens.
* Cesarean section or c-section helps to deliver a baby by making an incision through the mother's abdomen and uterus.
* Cholecystectomy is a surgery that removes the gallbladder.
The Atlantic General Hospital in examining the benefits and risks of surgery wrote,
"Benefits of having surgery
• Prevention of or improvements to medical conditions caused by a patient's obesity
• Surge in energy
• Increased life expectancy
• Increased self-esteem
• Weight loss
Risks to having surgery:
• A blood clot in a vein (deep venous thrombosis or DVT)
• Bleeding or infection
• Bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue
• Leakage of fluid (if opting for gastric banding)
• Adverse reaction to anesthesia
• Nausea and Vomiting
• Band slippage (if opting for gastric banding)
• Gallstones
• The overall risk of death".
Please make sure that you discuss all the health benefits and risks of having surgery with your surgeon ahead of the operation.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, closely related to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
On finding a natural compound for reducing scar after surgery, researchers investigated the effects of onion extract-based topical gel (Mederma, Merz Pharmaceuticals, Greensboro, NC, USA) that has been marketed as a product to improve scar appearance and texture.
The randomized, double-blinded, split-scar study including 24 patients with new surgical wounds of at least 4 cm in length was divided into two equal portions with each half treated by either onion extract gel or petrolatum ointment at the time of suture removal by applying three times daily for 8 weeks.
By comparing the efficacy between the onion extract gel and a petrolatum-based emollient (Aquaphor, Beiersdorf, Inc., Wilton, CT, USA), researchers at the Harvard Medical School showed that
* According to patients evaluated at 2, 8, and 12 weeks following initiation of treatment and a follow-up telephone interview conducted at least 11 months postoperatively, onion extract gel improved wound healing compared to those of petrolatum-based topical agents.
* According to the paired t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test at the end of the experiment, there was no statistically significant difference (p < .1) between the two treatment groups.
In other words, onion extract-based topical gel demonstrated a similar effect as those of petrolatum ointment but did not improve scar cosmesis or symptomatology.
Petrolatum ointment has been used in standard therapy in the management of postoperative wounds.
Taken together, onion may be considered a remedy in the management of postoperative wounds, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Tomatoes Modulate Immune Function Associated with the Onset of #Colitis, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Colitis is chronic a condition associated with the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.
Colitis can be classified into the microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis and Behcet's colitis(a), according to the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
Most common symptoms of colitis are totally depending on the types. However, the general symptoms include
* Adnominal pain and diarrhea
There is a report of a 25-year-old Iranian gentleman who was admitted to the hospital with severe bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain as a result of herbal-induced weight loss effects. On flexible sigmoidoscopy, a continuous length of congested mucosa with multiple small ulcers was seen extending up to the mid-transverse colon, in keeping with ulcerative colitis, according to the study by
Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust(1)
2. Bleeding per rectum
Acute ischaemic colitis (AIC) is being increasingly recognized as an uncommon cause of abdominal pain associated with fresh bleeding per rectum and diarrhea, according to the study by University Central Hospital(2).
3. Distention with bloody diarrhea
The typical clinical presentation is acute sudden abdominal pain and distention with bloody diarrhea(3).
4. Abdominal bloating and flatulence
In the study to estimate the prevalence of microscopic colitis and SIBO in patients with IBS, to evaluate the symptoms and the efficacy of treatment found that out of the 132 patients initially diagnosed with IBS 3% (n=4) had microscopic colitis and 43.9% (n=58) had SIBO. Diarrhea was the main symptom in patients with microscopic colitis and SIBO (p=0.041), while abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, and flatulence were prominent in IBS patients (p=0.042; p=0.039; p=0.048)(4).
5. Changes in bowel habits
Abdominal pain, bloating, early satiety, and changes in bowel habits are common presenting symptoms in individuals with functional GI disorders(5).
6. Fever and severe dehydration
There is a report of a 19-year-old man with a 1-year history of ulcerative colitis presented with fever, bloody diarrhea, and severe dehydration. He was on po.48 mg methylprednisolone and 3 g mesalazine daily and has recently finished taking clarithromycin for Campylobacter jejuni infection(6).
7. Urgency
The study to examine the differing perspectives and perceptual gaps relating to ulcerative colitis (UC) symptoms and their management between patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs), indicated that fifty-five percent of patients stated that UC symptoms over the past year had affected their quality of life, while physicians and nurses estimated that 35% to 37% of patients would have a reduced quality of life over the same period. Patients ranked urgency and pain as the most bothersome symptoms(7)
8. Other symptoms
There is a report of a case of a 51-year-old Caucasian male who was evaluated for abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, severe peripheral arthralgias, and chronic watery diarrhea as a result of granulomatous enterocolitis. due to Sarcoidosis(8). Another study conducted by Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with rats in the model group, showed lethargy, poor appetite, loss of energy, diarrhea, and bloody stool(9).
If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms persistently with no signs of stopping, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colitis.
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In finding healthy foods for the treatment of colitis, researchers examined the impact of tomato lycopene extract (TLE) on intestinal inflammation.
The study included mice lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced innate signaling and experimental colitis fed a diet containing 0.5 and 2% TLE or isoflavone free control (AIN-76).
According to the tested assays, TLE blocked LPS-induced IkappaBalpha degradation and RelA translocation associated with the onset of colitis by blocking the inhibition of the protein involved in cytokine production.
Furthermore, MIP-2, a small cytokine mRNA accumulation in IEC-18 cells, and pro-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin 12 (IL-12) induced by LPS were inhibited by the injection of TLE.
Moreover, the application of TLE also increased the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-alpha, a regulator of inflammation, and MCP-1 mRNA associated with macrophage recruitment in the colon of TLE-fed subjects.
The results strongly suggested that tomato extract inhibited colitis in mice through its modulatory of immune and inflammatory activity.
Taken together, tomato may be considered a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

(2) Colitis - Types and Symptoms by Kyle J.
* Adnominal pain and diarrhea
