#ThymeHoney Inhibits #Cancer Cell Proliferation, Inducing Cancer Apoptosis and Cell Cycle Arrest, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a significant effect on reducing the risk and treatment of endometrial cancer, some scientists suggested.
Endometrial cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cells in the tissue of the endometrium.

Most cases of endometrial cancer start on the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the endometrium. At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs.

Endometrial cancer has been found to metastasize to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes, vagina.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity, and use of hormone therapy are some of the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

Some researchers indicated that hormone change in the women's body such as higher androgen and estrogen levels and lower levels of progesterone due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) also is a major cause of endometrial cancer.

Dr. Navaratnarajah R, the lead author in the concern of the association of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) and the risk endometrial cancer, said, "Several studies have been published that appear to support this association, and it is common practice among gynecologists and physicians to prescribe hormonal treatment to reduce this perceived risk".

"The mechanism(s) underlying any association is also unclear, but it is again widely assumed that chronic anovulation, which results in continuous estrogen stimulation of the endometrium unopposed by progesterone, is a major factor".

These results clearly state that long-term overexpression of estrogen and reduced levels of progesterone are associated with the onset of the disease. However, the study of PCOs in the endometrial cancer risk should also take into account obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperandrogenism, which are also features of PCOS and risk factors for endometrial carcinoma.

In the association of PCOs and endometrial cancer mortality, the doctor team indicated, that there is no evidence to link the increased mortality from endometrial cancer in women with the syndrome.

The study once again reaffirms the link of the estrogen therapy used in menopausal women for the treatment of climate symptoms. In other words, long-term high levels of estrogen compared to progesterone in the body are the major cause of endometrial cancer.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer, researchers examined honey's influence the estrogenic activity.

The chemical composition and the potential of Greek honey extracts (thyme, pine, and fir honey) were classified to evaluate the most inhibitory activity against the endometrial cancer cells Ishikawa line.

Compared to other honey, thyme honey processes the highest total phenolics, phenolic acids, and hydroxymethylfurfural.

Thyme honey inhibited the expression of Ishikawa by reducing the cancer cell's viability.

Moreover, the application of thyme honey also exerted a significant effect against Ishikawa and other cancer cell lines by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Futhermore, the inhibition of Thyme honey also found to associated with its function in the mediation of estrogen via modulation of the estrogen receptor activity, as estrogen agonists or antagonists in cancer cell lines on a tissue type-specific manner.

The efficacy of thyme honey anti endometrial cancer was probably associated with its polyphenols and phenolic acids (vanillic acid and protocatechuic acid and p10 hydroxybenzoic acid) as these compounds have been proven to inhibit cancer-related pathways and processes

These results indicated that thyme honey monitored cell proliferation may be useful in cancer prevention, particularly, in endometrial cancer, through its agonist/antagonist properties.

Dr. Mari Jaakkola, the lead scientist in the conclusion of the study said, "Honey, especially the thyme honey, may be used as an alternative to sugar, while its incorporation in the human diet or as a food ingredient may prevent cancer-related processes, promoting thus the health of consumers".

Taken together, Thyme honey processed with major bioactive compounds polyphenols and phenolic acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with other primary therapies for the treatment of endometrial cancer without inducing any side effects

#Herbal #Bilberry's #Anthocyanoside Inhibits Symptoms and Onset of Memory Impairment, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Memory impairment is a condition associated with a slow decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning skills. Over time, the condition can worsen enough to affect the quality of life and daily activity.

Memory loss can be temporarily forgotten, such as forgetting to pay a monthly bill and permanent such as no longer knowing your name. Many factors can cause memory change. However, memory impairment in the elderly in most cases is associated with a gradual loss and death of neurons such as Alzheimer's disease.

Some memory changes can be resolved on their own or cured by medical treatment. Others due to the loss of neuron and quantity capacity cannot be revered such as dementia.

According to statistics, dementia affects 47.5 million people worldwide. Every year over 7.7 million new cases are diagnosed. The disease is a leading cause of dependency and mental impairment among the elderly population.

The aim of the treatment of irreversible memory impairment is to improve the quality of life by delaying the progression of underlying diseases such as AD and PD.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of memory deficits, with no side effects compared to those of conventional medicine, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin pigments, a group of flavonoids, and a widespread class of phenolic compounds found abundantly in bilberry.

The study included the examination of elevated plus-maze and radial maze tasks cognitive performance fed approximately 3.2 mg kg(-1)day (oral) the anthocyanins. The lyophilized berries were administered for 30 days before the first training.

According to the step-down inhibitory avoidance, open field analysis, lyophilized berries significantly enhanced short-term memory, but not long-term memory and induced an increase in the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.

Interestingly, prolonged treatment with lyophilized berries did not have any significant effects in the elevated plus-maze task but improved working memory in the radial maze, with significant differences observed during sessions 1-2 and 4, but did not alter reference memory in this task.

Researchers after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "These results suggest that lyophilized berries may be beneficial in the prevention of memory deficits, one of the symptoms related to AD, and corroborate previous findings showing that flavonoids present effects in several learning paradigms".

In other words, the efficacy of bilberry protects the memory function against the onset of deficits was attributed to the bioactive compound anthocyanin.

Taken together, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound Anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of symptoms of memory deficits in patients with AD, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Processes Immune-Modulatory Activity Against the Onset of Infectious Diseases, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that provide the body's defense against infectious organisms and pathogens.
The immune system can be classified into innate immunity and adaptive immunity
* Innate immunity comprises the cells and mechanisms is the process of the immune response against infection in a non-specific manner.

* Adaptive immunity or acquired immunity is the process of destroying pathogens or preventing their growth by a composed of highly specialized, systemic cells that have been causing a threat to the body in the past.

Diseases associated with the immune system can also be classified into underactive immunity and overactive immunity
* Underactive immunity also known as weakened immune function is a condition found mostly in people with chronic illness, the elderly, and children with immature immunity.

People with a weakened immune system are prone to infectious diseases.

* Overactive immunity associated with autoimmune diseases, including celiac disease, diabetes mellitus type 1, Graves'disease, inflammatory bowel disease, caused by allergens induced the immune system mistakenly attacking the body tissues.

In an inflammatory perspective, chronic inflammatory diseases are also caused by the immune system's failure to destroy all foreign invaders in the acute infection in a set period, leading to immune adaptation with the long-term production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Diseases associated with chronic inflammation include type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the modulation of the immune system, researchers examined the effects on inflammation-related cytokines of two doses of bromelain in a single dose placebo-controlled 3 × crossovers randomized clinical trial.

Injection of bromelain demonstrated significant immune-modulatory effects on Th1 cell mediator interferon-gamma in response to antigenic stimulation, Th2-type cytokine IL-5 in the regulation of humoral immune responses to extracellular parasites and bacterial infection as well as the immunosuppressive cytokine interleukin (IL)-10.

In other words, bromelain has a general effect on the antigen-specific (T cell) compartment of the human immune system in the modulation of cellular responses of lymphocytes.

In order to obtain more information on bromelain immunomodulatory effects, researchers investigated the influence of bromelain and trypsin on the cytokine production and proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with a classical cellular mediated autoimmune disorder, namely, encephalomyelitis disseminate (ED) as well as from healthy controls.

The experiment was carried out with PBMC from patients with ED (n=12) and healthy controls (n=12) cultured for seven days at 37 degrees C under three different conditions: without antigen, with bromelain, and with trypsin (final concentrations 10-1000 microg/ml).

Compared to trypsin, PBMC from patients with ED and healthy controls showed a significantly increased proliferative response to bromelain (ED: 14053+/- 7585 CPM with bromelain vs. spontaneous proliferation of 430+/- 255 CPM; healthy controls.

Furthermore, bromelain modulated the immune expression by activating macrophages/monocytes and type 1 cells associated with the adaptive immunity process independently from the underlying disease.

Taken together, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the modulation of immune function, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Betanin or #Betanidin Exert a Strong #Antioxidant Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable molecules produced by the liver or from the intake of diet sources, including foods and supplementation.
The function of antioxidants is to protect the body against oxidation induced by free radicals.

Free radicals are a normal byproduct of oxygen metabolism. Certain environmental and behavioral factors such as exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals and smoking can dramatically increase the number of free radicals in the body.

Free radicals have an unpaired electron on the outer ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stable, free radicals must donate or intercept an electron from other atoms, causing the domino's reaction that can not be stopped until all single electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals compared to antioxidants.

In other words, if the antioxidant enzymes no longer can perform the function of balancing the free radicals in the body, oxidative stress occurs.

Epidemiologically, oxidative stress has been found to cause protein, lipid, and alternation of cellular DNA, leading to the incidence of chronic illness and cancers.

Dr. V. Hajhashemi, the lead scientist in the elevation of the effects of antioxidants for disease prevention wrote, "Free radicals are produced continuously in the cells as part of normal cellular function, however, excess production might play a role in pathophysiology of many disease conditions, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis and some of the drug-induced toxicity".

And, " Many basic research studies and observational epidemiologic studies in humans suggest that antioxidants can prevent oxidative damage".

In other words, by maintaining a healthy ratio of antioxidants and free radicals, diseases associated with oxidative stress can be preventable.

Some researchers suggested, that maintaining a balanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants is the best way for good health.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of oxidative stress, researchers examined the betacyanins phenol antioxidants activity against peroxyl radicals generated from the azo-initiated oxidation of methyl linoleate in methanol and of a heterogeneous aqueous/soybean phosphatidylcholine liposomal system

In the major compound betanin, researchers found that the phytochemical, a weak retarder in methanol is an effective chain-breaking antioxidant in the liposomal model.

In other words, kinetic solvent activity and partition in lipid bilayers may affect betanin antioxidant properties.

Betanidin, another bioactive compound shows a significant effect on chain-terminating antioxidants in both models.

In ROS activity, betanidin demonstrated a stronger radical-scavenging activity compared to betanin, in terms of both radical-scavenging rates constant and stoichiometric factor.

The results suggest that betacyanins exert significant anti-ROS expression by blocking the initiation and progression and induce-termination of a free radical chain reaction through the bioactive compound betanin and betanidin.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Either betanin or betanidin incorporated in liposomes with alpha-tocopherol had additive effects, supporting the partition of the pigments in the bilayer and lipoperoxyl radical reduction".

Taken together, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

3,3'-#Diindolylmethane Induces Glioblastoma Cells and Resistant #Glioblastoma Cells Death, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of glioblastoma (GBM) and resistant glioblastoma with no side effects, according to studies.
Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain.

According to statistics, most patients diagnosed with cancer die within 12 to 15 months. Less than 5% of patients have survived longer than five years.
If you are male you are at 1.5 higher risk of glioblastoma, compared to your female counterpart.

The causes of glioblastoma are unknown, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and environmental factors, previous radiotherapy, and a weakened immune system may be some risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Most cases of GBM are diagnosed at an older age with a median age of 64. Some researchers suggested that aging with the change in body function may be one of the major risk factors that cause the incidence.

Dr. Judith Schwartzbaum, an associate professor of epidemiology and a member of The Ohio State University’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, in the study focused on the relationship between chemical signals from the immune system and the development of brain cancer uncovered the relationship between allergies, the immune system, and brain cancer. It appears that allergies may protect against the development of brain cancer.

She wrote, "It's important to identify the early stages of tumor development if we hope to intervene more effectively. " and "If you understand those early steps, maybe you can design treatments to block further tumor growth".

The results strongly suggested that people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly may be at a higher risk of glioblastoma

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

Researchers the concerned about current therapy deficits for the treatment of glioblastoma due to the limitation of limits the transport of essential drugs to the tumor sites. examined the effects of 3,3'-diindolylmethane by encapsulation in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles.

Nanoformulation loading of 27-87nm and encapsulation efficiency of 7.2% and 70% respectively were shown to induce the glioma cell's apoptosis internally.

Furthermore, in vivo, a bio-distribution study revealed the selective accumulation of the nanoformulation into rat brain tumor sites by crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Moreover, the nanoformulation also exhibited the abrogation of epidermal growth factor receptor pathway which has been found to that promote the growth and spread of glioblastoma cells.

Dr. Bhowmik A, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, wrote, "Our novel nano preparation, therefore, shows great promise to serve as a template for targeted delivery of other therapeutics in treating GBM".

In order to reveal more information about the prognosis for glioblastoma patients, researchers examined the 3,3'-diindolylmethane anti-glioblastoma activity.

Indole-3-carbinol and related fragments, including 3,3'-Diindolylmethane exerted a potent anti glioblastoma activity with low micromolar activity, particularly resistant glioblastoma cell culture.

The finding clearly suggested that 3,3'-diindolylmethane alone or encapsulated in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles induced the glioblastoma cells and resistant glioblastoma cells death through a number of mechanisms.

Taken together, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of glioblastoma and resistant glioblastoma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Coltsfoot Inhibits Lung Cancer Through Its Anti-Proliferation and Induction of Apoptosis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cell growth and multiplication disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of the DNA.
After colonizing the entire tissues of the specific organ, the oversized tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.

Most advanced stages of cancer may result in the death of the patients.

The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with major functions to inhale oxygen from the air to the bloodstream nourishing the body cells and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the lung tissue.

Most cases of lung cancer caused by the alternation of calls DNA begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the lung.

At the advanced stage, the cancer cells from the lung can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of fluid and blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to statistics, in 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Also in 2017, lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians.

Smoking although it is a major cause of lung cancer, however, not all lung cancer patients with lung cancer are smokers. Nonsmokers' lung cancer may be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors.

Some researchers suggested that lung cancer in many incidences is associated with oxidative stress as found in advanced lung cancer patients.

Dr. Filaire E the lead scientist in the examination of oxidative stress in the risk of lung cancer said, "Oxidative stress also plays important roles in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including aging, degenerative disease, and cancer. Among cancers, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer in the Western world".

And, "Distinct measures of primary and secondary prevention have been investigated to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality caused by lung cancer. Among them, it seems that physical activity and nutrition have some beneficial effects".

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease, researchers examined the effects of purified a polysaccharide, TFPB1, from the flower buds of Tussilago farfara on lung cancer.

In vitro, TFPB1 not only inhibited cell proliferation but also induced cancer cell apoptosis in A549 cells.

More precisely, TFPB1 kills lung cancer cells by inhibiting the expression of kinase and proteins such as phosphorylation of Akt and Bcl-2 expression involved in multiple cellular processes including apoptosis and exhibiting the protein associated with caspase involved in pro-apoptosis such as Bax expression.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "TFPB1 exhibited anti-proliferative and anti-apoptotic effect partly depending on the suppression of Akt signaling pathway." and "These findings provided us a potential chemotherapeutic strategy for the treatment of human non-small cell lung cancer".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric Protects Diabetics Against Inflammatory Induction of Diabetic Retinopathy, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the diabetes complications caused by long-term uncontrol levels of blood glucose in patients with diabetes, leading to vision loss.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is swelling in an area of the retinal macula, a consequence of diabetic retinopathy.

The cause of diabetic retinopathy is a result of unmanageable high blood sugar from diabetes associated with damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina.

Other eye diseases often found in patients with uncontrol blood glucose are
* Cataract, a condition of clouding of the eye’s lens.
Believe or not, patients with diabetes are 2-5 times more likely to develop cataracts compared to a healthy individual.

* Glaucoma, is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Diabetic has nearly doubled the risk of glaucoma, compared to non-diabetics.

At the early stage of hyperglycemia, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, the condition affects vision caused bt eh bleeding from abnormal retinal blood vessels.

Conventionally, diabetic retinopathy diagnosed and treated early were found to reduce diabetic retinopathy risk by 95%. However, late-stage diabetic retinopathy may cause irreversible vision loss.

Please make sure you have eye exams more frequently for preventive measures.

By managing your blood glucose by changing lifestyle with moderate exercise and taking your medication as direct diabetic retinopathy may be preventable.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the prevention of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of curcumin, an active ingredient of turmeric on diabetic retinopathy.

In vivo, curcumin inhibited the proliferation of retinal endothelial cells in tested animals.

Curcumolide, a bioactive compound found in turmeric, demonstrates a significant effect in alleviating retinal inflammatory activities both in vitro.

In vivo of STZ-induced diabetic rat model and in TNF-α-stimulated HUVECs, injection of curcumolide exerted anti-inflammatory effects against the inflammatory induction of retinal damage.

Furthermore, curcumolide also alleviated retinal vascular permeability and leukostasis and attenuated the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in diabetic retinas.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "These data suggest potential treatment strategies against diabetic retinopathy, particularly in the early stages of the disease".

Taken together, turmeric processed with a high amount of curcumolide may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
