Intake of #Honey Daily and Regularly Lowers the Risk of #BladderCancer, Scientists Find

Scientists may have found a natural food source that processes the potential for the treatment of bladder cancer with no side effects, some studies suggested.
Bladder cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the bladder.

Most cases of primary bladder cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the bladder tissue.

At the early stage, most bladder cancers do not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, the prostate can cause a distant metastasis to infect other healthy tissues and organs through the circulation of blood and fluids.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer without inducing any side effects, researchers at the University of Tsukuba conducted an experiment to examine the antitumor effect of bee honey against bladder cancer in vitro and in vivo.

The study included three human bladder cancer cell lines (T24, 253J, and RT4) and one murine bladder cancer cell line (MBT-2).

In vitro studies, application of honey significantly inhibited the proliferation of T24 and MBT-2 cell lines by 1-25% honey and of RT4 and 253J cell lines by 6-25% observed by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling index, an indicator of early tumor response to the injection of honey was lower in vitro.


FCM showed lower S-phase fraction, as well as the absence of aneuploidy compared with control cells.

Flow cytometry (FCM). in the measurement of cancer cells' physical and chemical characteristics showed a lower S-phase fraction and the absence of aneuploidy compared with control cells, an indication of inhibitory cancer cells by the application of honey.

Furthermore, In the in vivo, intralesional injection of 6 and 12% honey, as well as oral ingestion of honey, significantly inhibited tumor growth.
These results suggested that bee honey processes a significant activity for inhibiting the growth of T24, RT4, 253J, and MBT-2 bladder cancer cell lines in vitro.

And, Honey is also effective when administered intralesionally or orally in the MBT-2 bladder cancer implantation models.

Dr, Swellam T, the lead author after taking into account co and confounders wrote, " Our results are promising,,,,,, the mechanisms of the antitumor activity of honey".

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of bladder cancer.

* The extract also shows the highest viability in other cell lines, including the HL60 at 60%, EOL at 48%, and ML1 at 42%. The normal cell line H9 and WICL showed 35% and 25% of viable cells, respectively.

Taken together, fennel alone or its extracts and bioactive compound anethole may be considered adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers

Daily Intake of Carrot Normalizes the Levels of Cholesterol and Reduces the Risk of Heart Diseases, Researchers Say

Carrots may have found a therapeutic and positive effect in inhibiting the abnormally high blood cholesterol some scientists suggested.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high blood cholesterol in the blood.

The exact causes of the condition are unknown. However, most researchers suggested that genetic mutation inherited from the parents, unhealthy diet and lifestyle, and some medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, and hypothyroidism, are the most common risk factors that cause the early onset of the syndrome.

Truly, mutation of the LDLRAP1 gene is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern which contributes to the risk of hyperlipidemia. However, parents of the patient who carry only one copy of the altered gene, are not at risk of high blood cholesterol levels.


Dr. GS Mannu,, the lead author in the study "Evidence of Lifestyle Modification in the Management of Hypercholesterolemia" said, "Target cholesterol levels set out in various guidelines could be achieved by lifestyle changes, including diet, weight reduction, and increased physical activity with the goal of reducing total cholesterol to <200 mg/dL and LDL-C <100mg/dL. Various dietary constituents such as green tea, plant sterols, and soy protein have important influences on total cholesterol. Medical intervention should be reserved for those patients who have not reached this goal after 3 months of non-pharmacological approach".

This statement indicates people who follow the Western diet with high amounts of saturated fat and trans fat, red meat, processed food, and less nuts, fruits, and vegetables are at higher risk of abnormally high blood cholesterol.

* Carrot included in the diet mice group shows a decrease of cholesterol by 41% and triglycerides by 49 % in plasma and in the liver, by 41% and -39%, respectively in animals fed cholesterol-supplemented diets.

* Carrot-fed mice group also induced an increase of total neutral sterols fecal excretion, which inhibits digestive cholesterol absorption.

* Carrot diet increased antioxidant status in cholesterol-fed mice as related by the 16% higher FRAP values.

* Although vitamin E was not affected by the carrot diet, the vitamin E/TG ratio was significantly higher in animals fed carrot diets. By comparison to the healthy mice, the dyslipidaemic mice had higher serum vitamin E (p<0.001), but the serum vitamin E / total cholesterol ratio did not differ between the dyslipidaemic mice and healthy controls (p>0.05)

Further differentiation also suggested that The carrot diet protects the heart tissue through the expression of an increase of vitamin E in the heart in both cholesterol-free and cholesterol-supplemented mice.

Dr. Nicolle C the lead author in the summary once again said, " Carrot consumption modifies cholesterol absorption and bile acids excretion and increases antioxidant status and these effects could be interesting for cardiovascular protection".

Taken together, there is no doubt that carrots with abundant antioxidants may be considered a functional food and an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of patients with hyperlipidemia.

Furthermore, according to the study of cases from the Hawaii Tumor Registry and controls randomly selected from a list of Oahu residents, intake of onion was associated with decreased risk of lung cancer with the OR = 0.5 in the highest quartile of intake compared to the lowest.

In prostate cancer, the Italian study suggested that both onions and garlic did not have significantly decreased OR of prostate cancer compared to those with the lowest intake, However, increasing intake showed a trend of decreasing the ORs.


In esophageal cancer, the intake of raw garlic/onion at least one time per week has the adjusted OR of esophageal cancer of 0.2.
In colorectal cancer, the Italian and Swiss case-control studies found that both onions show a protective effect against colon cancer regardless of the amount of intake onion intake compared to non-consumers of onion.

In stomach cancer, according to the meta-analysis, consumption of large amounts of total Allium vegetables, such as garlic and onion reduced the risk of gastric cancer by comparing the highest and lowest consumption groups.

Taken together, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Microbial infection is an infection caused by the multiplication of microbes after entering the body successfully.

Two highly alkylated gingerols, such as [10]-gingerol and [12]-gingerol effectively inhibited the growth of these oral pathogens at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) range of 6-30 microg/mL.

Furthermore, these 2 compounds also killed the oral pathogens at a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) range of 4-20 microg/mL compared to other failed compounds such as 5-acetoxy-[6]-gingerol, 3,5-diacetoxy-[6]-gingerdiol and galanolactone.

In order to reveal more information about ginger's antimicrobial activity, researchers examine the newly isolated compounds including 6-paradol (1) and 6-shogaol (2) as the major antimycobacterial agents.

Injection of these isolates was found to be active against Mycobacterium chelonei, M. intracellulare, M. smegmatis, and M. xenopi (MIC 10-15 µg/ml).

The desmethyl derivative of compound (1) retained the antimycobacterial activity. However, derivatives are more active against Candida albicans, compared to (1) and (2).

Interestingly, the new compound Gingerone (9)was found to be inactive against microbial activity.

Taken together, ginger processed with abundantly bioactive ingredients may be considered a natural alternative for the prevention and treatment of microbial infection, and diseases associated with microbacterial infectious disease, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human infection.

Honey may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of influenza, some scientists suggested.
Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to changes in the immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.


Some researchers also suggested that obese people are also at a higher risk of the onset of influenza.

Dr. Green WD, the lead author at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggested that obese individuals associated with the impairment of the adaptive immune response are at substantial risk of influenza.

The doctor team in the study " Obesity Impairs the Adaptive Immune Response to Influenza Virus" wrote, "Given the dramatic rise in obesity over the past few decades, this increased risk for influenza infection poses a serious public health threat because nearly 500 million adults and children worldwide are classified as obese".

"Obesity impairs the immune response to influenza and influenza vaccination through alterations of the cellular immune system. Compared with vaccinated healthy-weight adults, vaccinated obese adults have twice the risk of influenza or influenza-like illness despite equal serological response to vaccination".

The most common symptoms of influenza are high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, sneezing, and persistent fatigue.

Manuka honey at the dose of 3.13 mg/mL also improved the function of zanamivir or oseltamivir by reducing the maximum concentration of effectiveness to nearly 1/1000th for their single use.

Dr.Watanabe K, the lead scientist said, "Honey, in general, and particularly Manuka honey, has potent inhibitory activity against the influenza virus, demonstrating a potential medicinal value.


Moreover, by re-examining the anti-influenza effect of Luatang honey, researchers suspected that the efficacy may be associated with the presence of the methylglyoxal (MGO), a key component of Manuka honey.

By evaluating the anti-influenza viral activity of MGO and its potential in combination treatments with neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors, researchers found that
* Injection of MGO inhibited influenza virus A/WSN/33 replication 50% inhibitory concentration = 240 ± 190 μM; 50% cytotoxic concentration = 1.4 ± 0.4 mM; selective index (SI) = 5.8, which is related to its virucidal effects.

* MGO exerted a promising activity against various influenza strains.

* MGO increases the effect of NA inhibitors by decreasing the to  ∼1/100(th) of their single usage.

* MGO also demonstrates a synergistic effect with NA inhibitor against the oseltamivir-resistant virus.

Taken together, Luatang honey processed bioactive compound methylglyoxal (MGO) may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of influenza with no side effects, pending a larger and multi-center human study.
