Cholesterol produced by the liver is needed for the cell to build strong membranes, produce steroid hormones, bile acids, and vitamin D, and aid digestive functioning.
Most people with high blood cholesterol at the early do not experience any symptoms, however, as the levels of blood cholesterol continue to grow, at some points, patients may experience heart-related symptoms, including chest pain or angina, pain while walking caused by reduced blood flow to the legs.
In serious cases, elevated blood cholesterol can also induce symptoms of stroke and heart attack.
Epidemiological studies suggest that a high level of blood cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Besides a high-fat diet, certain risk factors such as a family history of high cholesterol, being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking and some health conditions including diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease have been found to increase the risk of high blood cholesterol.
There are 2 types of blood cholesterol
* Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) also is known as “bad cholesterol”. Bad cholesterol is a major cause of plaque build-up in the arteries if it presents at a high level.
*High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as “good cholesterol”. HDL helps remove LDL cholesterol from your arteries back to the liver.
The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 LDL)/ 1HLD
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Searching the list of combined nutraceuticals for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the effects of a combination of nutraceuticals based on artichoke, red yeast rice, banana, and coenzyme Q10.
The double bind, cross-over designed trial versus placebo included 30 adults with LDL cholesterol suboptimal in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
After a period of 3 weeks of dietary habits correction, patients began a period of 6 weeks of treatment with nutraceutical or placebo, followed by 2 weeks of washout and finally 6 weeks in cross-over.
The combination showed a significant improvement in total cholesterol (-13.6 %), LDL-C (-18.2 %), and non-HDL-C (-15 %).
Dr. Cicero AF said, "The tested combination of nutraceuticals has shown clinical efficacy in the reduction of total cholesterol, non-HDL, LDL, and triglycerides while improving the level of liver transaminases and high sensitivity C-reactive protein".
In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-high blood cholesterol activity, researchers review selected studies according to the standard guidelines and criteria by searching the databases of medical literature.
The review of the meta-analysis of data from 9 trials including 702 subjects suggested that artichoke has a strong effect in decreasing plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides.
The application of artichoke has no effect on high-density lipoprotein concentration.
In other words, artichoke extract only had a significant reduction in both total and LDL-C, and triglycerides.
Taken together, artichoke may be considered a functional and herbal remedy for the treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a larger sample-sized and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Isothiocyanates Inhibit Diseases and Syndromes Associated with Oxidativestress Disorder, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.
Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions with unpaired electrons through chemical bonds with other atoms or molecules during a chemical reaction. They may have positive, negative, or zero charges. The unpaired electrons cause radicals to be highly chemically reactive in the human body, leading to aging and cancers.
In Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD), an oxidative stress disorder, treatment with Sulforaphane, a molecule within the isothiocyanate group, decreased CEC apoptosis by 55% in unstressed group and by 43% in tBHP-treated specimens, through inhibition of oxidative stress(1).
The Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto study also indicated a similar result of sulforaphane in the improvement of antioxidant status in the testing of a number of cancer cell lines(2). Another study suggested that isothiocyanates(ITCs), found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, may be effective as a cancer chemopreventive agent through modulation of phase II detoxifying/antioxidant enzyme activities(3).

#Phytochemical #Carotenoids Inversely Are Associated with a Reduced Risk of #StomachCancer, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.
The stomach plays a critical role in assisting the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.
Gastric/Stomach cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gastric/stomach cancer.
According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man's lifetime is about 1 in 95.
The exact causes of gastric/stomach cancer are unidentified. However, researchers do not know that certain risk factors are associated with an increased risk of the disease, including
* Age
Most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in adults in their 50s.
*Diet
Exposure to certain chemical carcinogens in the foods of the first 20 years of life or over a prolonged period of time may increase the risk of gastric/stomach cancer.
* Bacteria
Researchers found that people with gastric/stomach cancer also contain the bacteria Helicobacter pylori in their stomach.
* Hydrochloric acid production
People with a low amount or no of hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach are at risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer
* Long-term inflammation of the stomach
People who have conditions associated with long-term stomach inflammation are at slightly increased risk of gastric/stomach cancer.
* Family history
The risk of gastric/stomach increases if one of the members of your direct family has it.
* Smoking is associated with gastric/stomach due to cigarette carcinogens.
* Obesity
Researchers found that overweight and obesity are associated with an increased risk of gastric/ stomach cancer. The strength of the association also increases with increasing BMI.
However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed gastric. stomach cancer.
Carotenoids are a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.
In finding a natural pigment for the prevention and treatment of gastric/stomach cancer, researchers examined the effects of carotenoids, the fat-soluble pigments found abundantly in fruits and vegetables including total dietary carotenoids, dietary carotenoid subclasses (α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and lycopene), and foods contributing to the dietary intake of each carotenoid on the risk of GC.
According to the results of the case-control study of 415 cases and 830 controls recruited from the National Cancer Center Hospital in Korea between March 2011 and December 2014,
* Intake of carotenoids exerted a significant inverse association with GC risk among women, with a relative odds ratio (OR) of 0.56.
* A higher intake of dietary lycopene was inversely associated with GC risk overall in the subjects with OR 0.60. In men, the OR was 0.60 compared to women with an OR of 0.54.
* In the subgroups of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-positive subjects, dietary lycopene intake demonstrated a strong impact on GC risk was also observed in the subgroups of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-positive subjects and ever smokers.
Compared to foods containing a high amount of carotenoids and lycopene, consumption of tomatoes and tomato ketchup was inversely associated with GC risk in the overall subjects, men, and women.
Based on the findings. researchers wrote, "Based on our findings, a higher intake of dietary lycopene and contributing foods of lycopene (tomatoes and tomato ketchup) may be inversely associated with the risk of GC".
Taken altogether, carotenoids containing a high amount of compound lycopene may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Combination of Free Form of DOX@BET Induces #Cancer Cells Death, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.
However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.
Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.
According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.
Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancers in the US.
The causes of cancer are unknown. age, excessive alcohol drinking, exposure to cancer causing-substances, diseases associated with chronic inflammation, unhealthy diet, hormone therapy, and use of immunosuppression are some of the prevalent factors involved in the onset of cancer.
However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed cancer.
Some researchers suggested that the rise of cancers in obese individuals may correlate to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr.Timothy J Key, the lead scientist wrote, "Diet-related factors are thought to account for about 30% of cancers in developed countries. Obesity increases the risk of cancers in the esophagus, colorectum, breast, endometrium, and kidney. Alcohol causes cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, and liver, and causes a small increase in the risk of breast cancer".
And, "Adequate intakes of fruit and vegetables probably lower the risk for several types of cancer, especially cancers of the gastrointestinal tract".
Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient that reduces the side effects of potent anticancer drugs e.g. doxorubicin (DOX) on the normal tissues, researchers examined the betanin (BET) effect in the co-administration with them.
In the study to overcome the restrictions of BET, researchers designed a new pH-responsive nanocarrier via decoration of gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) by (methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly ((2-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-itaconic acid) (PGNPs) for the DOX and BET loading capacity of 20.5% and 16.25%, respectively).
Injection of DOX@BET loaded PGNPs decreased the significant cell viability amount of breast cancer cells (MCF-7) compared to the treatment of the free form of DOX or BET.
In other words, the newly designed combination kills induce a higher percentage of cell death compared to the use of DOX or BET individually.
Sadly, the study did not confirm the combination reduced the side effects caused by DOX during the experiment.
Dr. Javadi B in the examination of herbal plants for the treatment of breast cancer showed that beetroot (Beta vulgris) induced cancer death by cytotoxicity without affecting the nearby healthy cells.
He continued, "Additional pharmacological studies and clinical trials are needed to elucidate their molecular and cellular mechanisms of actions, frequency, and amount of consumption, possible adverse effects, and optimum preparation methods.".
Taken together, betanin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The bowel forms the lower part of the digestive system consisting of the small bowel (or small intestine) and the large bowel(colon and rectum).
The large bowel plays an essential role in absorbing water, and restoring and removing waste.
Cancer is a class of medical condition caused alternation of cell DNA that starts on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of a specific organ. Compared to a benign tumor, invasive tumor cells at the advanced stage can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue through blood and fluid circulation.
Colorectal Cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth in the tissues of the colon or rectum.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society in 2019, approximately
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.
Furthermore, the overall, lifetime risk of colorectal cancer of developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
Colorectal cancer is a relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer. It is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the U.S. and Canada.
Most patients with colorectal cancer at the early stage are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage patients might experience symptoms of changes in bowel habits, narrow stools, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, intermittent, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, peptic ulcer disease, abdominal pain, accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
Conventionally, treatment of colorectal cancer totally depends on the stage of cancer, including localized(0), regional (1) and distance spread cancer (2 - nearby tissue, 3 - spread to the lymph node, 4, spread to organs and tissues)
The most common type of colorectal cancer is Adenocarcinomas which originate in the surface of the inner layer that lines the cavities and organs of the body.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, which a closely related of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
Indicaxanthin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
In finding a potent compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer, researchers examined the effect of the aqueous extract and of its betalain pigment indicaxanthin (Ind), on the proliferation of human colorectal cancer Caco-2 cells.
According to the tested assays, administration of whole extract and Ind exerted a strong activity to induce apoptosis and anti-proliferation at nutritionally relevant amounts, with IC50 400±25 mg fresh pulp equivalents/mL, and 115±15 μM (n=9), respectively at a dose-dependent manner.
More importantly, the inhibition of colorectal cancer cells by whole extract and Ind without causing toxicity for post-confluent differentiated cells.
In chemical analysis, Ind was found to account for ∼80% of the effect of the whole extract. Ind did cause oxidative stress in proliferating Caco-2 cells.
Furthermore, Ind was found to act as a de-methylation of the tumor suppressor p16(INK4a) gene promoter, in the activation of cell cycle arrest in the G2/M-phase in the tested cell line.
More precisely, Ind kills cancer cells by decreasing hyper-phosphorylated associated with cell cycle division and promoting hypo-phosphorylated associated with cell cycle arrest without alternating the cell division enzyme cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CD4).
Taken together, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Alliin Detoxes the Liver Against the Risk of #LiverCancer, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest internal organ and plays a critical role in filtering blood coming from the intestine before passing to the heart and other parts of the body.
The liver also produces bile that aids the digestive function in digesting lipids and absorbing the nutrients from food and cholesterol that are essential to build a strong cell membrane, production of steroid hormones, and vitamin D.
However, overexpression of cholesterol in the blood has been found to induce plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Primary liver cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissue as a result of the alternation of cell DNA.
According to the statistics, in 2019, approximately, 42,030 adults (29,480 men and 12,550 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer.
Believe it or not, since 1980, the incidence of liver cancer has tripled. Between 2006 and 2015, the number of people diagnosed with primary liver cancer increased by approximately 3% annually.
Most cases of primary liver cancer begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the liver tissue, before penetrating into the deeper layers and spreading to other nearby tissues and organs.
Epidemiologically, primary liver cancer has been found metastasizing to the lung (median 44%), portal vein (35%), and portal lymph node(s) (27%). Furthermore, the most common causes of liver cancer death are liver failure (34%), bleeding (30%), and advanced cancer (24%).
Interestingly, the pattern of metastasis of primary liver cancer caused by the cirrhotic liver is somewhat different from that of the noncirrhotic.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of primary liver cancer, some researchers suggested accessive alcohol consumption may be the main culprit that causes the rise of liver cancer incidence in the Western world.
Dr. F. Turati, the lead scientist wrote, "Compared with non-drinking, the pooled RRs were 0.91 (95% confidence interval, CI, 0.81–1.02) for moderate drinking (<3 drinks per day) and 1.16 (95% CI, 1.01–1.34) for heavy drinking (≥3 drinks per day), with significant heterogeneity among studies".
And, "The dose–risk curve suggested a linear relationship with increasing alcohol intake in drinkers, with an estimated excess risk of 46% for 5g of ethanol per day and 66% for 10g per day. This systematic review suggests a moderate detrimental role of consumption of 3 or more alcoholic drinks per day on liver cancer and a lack of association with moderate drinking".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
With the aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the
protective effects of three garlic powders, obtained from bulbs grown in soils with different levels of sulfur fertilization, against DNA damage in the animal liver.
Believe it or not, increasing fertilization of soil that grows garlic has shown to increase the alliin content of the powders.
According to the tested assays, garlic powders administered to rats for 2 weeks (5% of the diet) demonstrated a 35-60% reduction in DNA damage induced by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in rat liver.
Furthermore, by increasing the alliin content in the powders, tested garlic powders strongly exerted a proportional decrease in NDMA-induced DNA alteration.
In other words, by increasing alliin content, garlic powders protect the integrity and viability of the liver cells against DNA alternation in facilitating the onset of liver cancer.
Moreover, DNA damage induced by aflatoxin B1 in the liver was also decreased strongly by the three garlic powders regardless of the content of alliin.
The results suggested that alliin protects the liver cells against DNA alternation and works synergistically with other compounds in the garlic to inhibit the damage of liver cells.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "(There is evidence) that fertilization can have an impact on the protective capacity of garlic bulbs".
In order to reveal more information about alliin anti-liver cancer activity, researchers compared the chemopreventive efficacies of several garlic powders with various levels of alliin, a precursor of active sulfur compounds.
In hepatocarcinogenesis initiated by the administration of 10 i.p. injections of 0.025 mg/kg body weight aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), rats fed diets containing three garlic powders (5% of the diet) with various alliin contents for 3 weeks showed a decreased the appearance and size of hepatic GST-P foci, an early marker of liver cancer.
An increased alliin content showed a strong reduction appearance and size of hepatic GST-P foci compared to lower content in tested rats.
Additionally, increased alliin content of the garlic powder was also associated with a proportional decrease in the number and area of preneoplastic foci in the liver.
Garlic powder ingestion in the inhibition was also partly attributed to the stimulation of the increased levels of hepatic ethoxy resorufin demethylase, glutathione S-transferase and UDP glucuronosyltransferase, and AFB1 associated with liver detoxification with no effect on the levels of nifedipine oxidase involved in C-oxidative metabolism.
Based on the findings, Dr. Bergès R, the lead scientist said, "garlic partly exerts its anticarcinogenic effects through increasing enzymes involved in AFB1 detoxification".
Taken together, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer with no side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Tomato's #Lycopene Inhibits Hepatic Markers Associated with a Reduced Risk of Liver Damage and Injury, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
A hepatic marker is a blood test that measures the function of the liver. In other words, according to the blood test results, your doctor may know the severity of the liver damage.
The liver is the largest internal organ in the body which plays a critical role in filtering out blood from the digestive system before passing it to other parts of the body.
Furthermore, the liver also produces bile which has a strong impact on the building of cell membranes, production of steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive system in the absorption of nutrients.
Liver transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) are some of the liver markers used by researchers to measure liver injury in a patient with some degree of intact liver function.
Aspartate transaminase (AST) is an enzyme found primarily in the liver and kidney. High levels of ALT is associated with liver damage. ALT screening is used often in patients with
liver disease.
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is a liver enzyme. increased levels of ALT have been found in patients with liver damage.
Other liver enzymes such as Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) also have a similar effect as seen in ALT and AST.
More precisely, elevated liver enzymes is an indication of liver inflammation or cell damage.
Dr. Edoardo G. Giannin, the lead scientist in the explanation of liver enzyme alternation, wrote, "Abnormal liver enzyme levels may signal liver damage or alteration in bile flow. Liver enzyme alteration may be either the accompanying biochemical picture in a patient with symptoms or signs suggestive of liver disease or an isolated, unexpected finding in a patient who has undergone a wide range of laboratory tests for a nonhepatic disease or for minor, vague complaints".
And, "The pattern of enzyme abnormality, interpreted in the context of the patient's characteristics, can aid in directing the subsequent diagnostic work-up. Awareness of the prevalence of the determining liver disease in specific populations and of possible hepatic involvement during systemic illnesses or drug therapies may help the clinician identify the cause of alterations efficiently".
The results strongly suggested that testing hepatic markers of patients with liver disease may be helpful in identifying the causes.
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In the urgency to discover healthy foods that process liver-protective effects, researchers examined the effect of dry tomato peel (DTP) on hepatic markers in a high-saturated-fat (HSF) diet animal model for 12 weeks.
The study included 40 8 weeks, weighing 22.2±1.0 g) BALB/c male mice (n=40) divided into four treatment groups (10 mice/group): (a) high-fat control diet (HF Ctrl), which contains sunflower oil as a sole source of fat; (b) HSF/high-cholesterol (HC) diet; (c) HSF/HC diet supplemented with 9% DTP and (d) HSF/HC diet supplemented with 17% DTP.
According to the tested assays, without supplements with DTP, HSF/HC diet-treated mice showed significantly increased body weight gain, adipose tissue weight, insulin resistance, and lipid peroxidation in the liver as well as the onset of liver steatosis and inflammation.
Upon the injection of DTP, HSF/HC diet mice demonstrated a significant increase in plasma lycopene concentration and reduced markers associated with metabolic syndrome developing.
In other words, DTP inhibits the liver damage and injury marker through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity and lipid metabolism
Taken together, tomatoes processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplement for liver protection, pending a large sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
