Acute coronary syndrome is a medical emergency associated with a range of conditions caused by sudden, reduced blood flow to the heart, leading to heart muscle damage and brain apoptosis depending on the affected location.
Acute coronary syndrome is associated with the severity of the buildup of plaque deposits in and on the walls of the coronary arteries.
Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.
Arteries form a part of blood vessels and the circulatory system with the function of delivering oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles.
Depending on the severity of the blockage, a complete blockage is life-threatening. Symptoms of acute coronary syndrome, chest pain or discomfort, pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck, back or stomach, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea.
If the chest pain is persistent with no sign of stopping, please call 911 immediately.
The most common treatment of acute coronary syndrome is medicine to reopen the artery. However, in severe cases, angioplasty (inflating a small balloon) may be necessary.
Traditionally, over many decades, patients with acute coronary syndrome are likely to be treated by oxygen therapy.
Dr. Pankaj Garg in examining the effects of oxygen therapy on patients with acute coronary syndrome wrote, " However, more recently, there have been many reports of harmful effects of high-flow oxygen in ACS patients where the patient might not be hypoxic".
Anf "High flow oxygen has been shown previously to reduce cardiac output,2 attributes to arterial vasoconstriction3–5 and also to increase systemic vascular resistance.6 More recently, two systematic reviews suggest that the routine use of high-flow oxygen in uncomplicated myocardial infarction may result in greater infarct size and possibly increase the risk of mortality".
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China. The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
In finding a potential compound that inhibits acute coronary syndrome, researchers examined the neuroprotective effects of Chinese herbal medicines on the cardiovascular outcome among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and renal insufficiency after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
The study included a population consisting of 215 subjects in the control group who were treated with Western medicine standard therapy, and 211 subjects in the treatment group who were treated with Chinese herbal medicines (Fufang Chuanxiong Capsule and Xinyue Capsule) for 6 months.
Participants are from the 5C trial with post-PCI patients suffering from ACS with mild-to-moderate renal insufficiency (30 mL•min-1•1.73 m-2 < estimated glomerular filtration rate≤89 mL•min-1•1.73 m-2).
According to the endpoints including the composite of cardiac death, nonfatal recurrent myocardial infarction, and ischemia-driven revascularization assays, after one year of following up of 2 groups
*There were 16 cases of the primary endpoint in the control group and 6 cases of the primary endpoint in the treatment group with an absolute risk reduction ARR=0.046. elative risk RR= 0.38.
* There were 15 cases of secondary endpoint in the control group and 5 cases of secondary endpoint in the treatment with ARR= 0.041 and RR=0.34
In other words, the treatment of Chinese and Western medicines showed a strong effect in reducing the risk of acute coronary syndrome in patients with renal deficiency.
However, The eGFR levels associated with renal functioning in the treatment group were significantly higher, compared to the higher levels in the control group.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Chinese herbal medicines plus Western medicine standard therapy improved clinical outcomes in patients with ACS and mild-to-moderate renal insufficiency. Additionally, this study also demonstrated Chinese herbal medicines were useful in deferring the decline of renal function".
Taken altogether, herbal Angelica in combination with other herbal medicines that may be considered a remedy for the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#CascaraSagrada's #Emodin Enhances Gemcitabine Treatment and Inhibits Angiogenesis of Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a functional herb bioactive compound that processes anti-pancreatic cancer activity with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Pancreatic cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the pancreas.
In the early stage, pancreatic cancer starts on the cells of the surface of the inner lining of pancreatic tissue. At the advanced stage, cancerous cells of the pancreas can travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.
The exact causes of the alternation of DNA of pancreatic cells are unknown. However, epidemiological studies suggested that genetic preposition and acquired gene mutations are associated with the increased incidence of cancer.
Some researchers suggested long-term use of tobacco, being overweight and obese, exposure to workplace chemicals, age, gender, and family history are some prevalent risk factors for pancreatic cancer.
According to the statistics, pancreatic cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in men and women. cancer accounts for 7% of all cancer deaths.
The 5 years survival rate at stages 1 and 2 is 61% and 52% respectively.
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.
The herbal's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing effect.
Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, the herb also contains anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.
In the study to reaffirm the Emodin anti-pancreatic cancer effect through inducing apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cells and inhibiting tumor growth, researchers at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine, launched an investigation to find out whether emodin could inhibit the angiogenesis of pancreatic cancer tissues and its mechanism.
In vitro and in vivo Emodin inhibited pancreatic cancer cell growth, induced apoptosis, and enhanced the anti-tumor effect of gemcitabine on pancreatic cancer cells by inhibiting the activity of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), the protein in response to cellular survival
Emodin inhibited tumor angiogenesis in vitro and in implanted pancreatic cancer tissues, decreased the expression of angiogenesis-associated factors, and reduced eNOS phosphorylation in cell proliferation.
However, Emodin had no effect on VEGFR expression in vivo.
Dr. Lin SZ, the lead author said, "emodin has a potential anti-tumor effect on pancreatic cancer via its dual role in the promotion of apoptosis and suppression of angiogenesis".
Additionally, in the examination of the effects of an X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) and NF-κB in chemotherapy resistance in pancreatic cancer, researchers conducted an investigation of SW1990 cells treated by sodium chloride, gemcitabine, emodin or their combination (gemcitabine plus emodin).
The combination therapy of gemcitabine plus emodin) is more effective in inducing a significantly inhibited SW1990 cell growth and a higher percentage of apoptosis than monotherapy.
Gemcitabine upregulated the expression of XIAP and NF-κB, while emodin or emodin plus gemcitabine downregulated them compared to the control group in vitro.
In SW1990 cells established orthotopic pancreatic tumor models in nude mice. The combination of emodin and gemcitabine showed a significant reduction in the tumor-to-tumor (T/NT) ratio, Standardized uptake value (SUV), and tumor weight compared to monotherapy.
Dr. Wang ZH, the lead author after taking into account of co and confounders wrote:" Emodin enhances the antitumor effect of gemcitabine in SW1990 pancreatic cancer in vitro and in vivo, which may be via the downregulation of NF-κB expression, thus inhibiting the expression of XIAP.".
Taken altogether, the herbal Cascara sagrada processes a high amount of bioactive ingredient Emodon may be considered a function in the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with chemo intervention of treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending the results of large example size and multi-center studies.

#Cranberry and GrapeSeed Extracts Inhibit Pathways Associated with the Proliferation of Oral Cancer, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
The mouth-formed part of the digestive system is an oval-shaped cavity inside the skull that processes 2 main functions eating and speaking.
Cancer is a group of chronic diseases characterized by cell growth that starts on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the mouth.
Oral cancer is any malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva), and the roof of the mouth (palate).
According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, 4,700 Canadians were diagnosed with oral cancer, including 3,250 men and 1,450 women. In the same year, the disease also caused the death of 1,250 Canadians.
The exact causes of oral cancer are unknown. Epidemiologically, aging, smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, chewing tobacco and betel nut, long-term use of mouthwash, and male ganders are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with the disease.
Some researchers suggested that poor hygiene that leads to advanced gingivitis may be a major culprit that causes the onset of oral cancer.
Dr. Roshni Ramesh, the lead scientist wrote, "Gingival enlargements are frequently encountered in dental practice. There are different types of gingival enlargements and they vary according to the etiologic factors and pathologic processes that produce them".
And, "Oral cancers especially squamous cell carcinomas present with variations in clinical presentation and the sites affected".
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of proanthocyanidins, compounds highly concentrated in dietary cranberries and grapes on oral cancer.
The oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines, CAL27 and SCC25 were used to compare the effects of cranberry and grape seed extract on phenotypic behaviors of these oral cancers.
According to the tested analysis, administration of cranberry and grape seed extracts, in a dose-dependent manner showed significant inhibition of the proliferation of both oral cancer cell lines.
Proteins associated with the promotion of cancer cell apoptosis were significantly stimulated by the injection of cranberry and grape seed extracts.
The pathways associated with cancer cell adhesion, cell morphology, and cell cycle division were also inhibited by both extracts.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study represents one of the first comparative investigations of cranberry and grape seed extracts and their anti-proliferative effects on oral cancers".
And, "cranberry and grape seed extract not only inhibit oral cancer proliferation but also that the mechanism of this inhibition may function by triggering key apoptotic regulators in these cell lines".
Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Dandelion Exerts Antioxidant Activity and Cytotoxicity Against Cancer, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Cell proliferation is the radical growth of cells to replace the damage or injury through the cell cycle division.
Cell proliferation is a process and a necessary step for wound healing.
All normal cells undergo cell cycle division to replace the old cells with new cells through limited cell division.
On the other hand, cancer cells can multiply definitely.
In cancer, antiproliferation is a process in which the cancer cells are killed or limited to grow through many mechanisms, including the use of chemodrugs.
In the immune perspective, anti-proliferation can be carried out by activating the genes associated with cancer suppression, programming cell death,.... and cell cycle arrest.
A suppressive gene, such as pro-apoptotic p53 induces cancer cell death through cell cycle arrest. In other words, the gene inhibits tumor growth by interrupting the cancer cell cycle division.
In the programmed cell death gene, such as BCL-2 induce cell death by either inducing or inhibiting apoptosis. In other words, If cells are no longer needed or damaged, activating an intracellular death program will cause cell death.
In the phytochemicals perspective, anti-proliferation can also be carried out by antioxidants which stimulate the free radicals overexpression to induce toxicity to tumor cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.
Some cancers can stimulate the production of a new blood vessel for cancer cells to grow and others can make enzymes that break down normal cells and tissues as they grow.
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists compare five different common South European species of Taraxacum (T. obovatum (Willd.) DC., T. marginellum H. Lindb., T. hispanicum H. Lindb., T. lambinonii Soest and T. lacistrum Sahlin) antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity.
According to the dissimilarities between species in LC/MS patterns, T. marginellum demonstrated strong intracellular antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity by reducing the expression of ROS.
Compared to the other 3 species, T. marginellum showed the most efficient against the induction of free radicals overexpression in vitro.
Furthermore, in free radical theory, compared to T. marginellum, T. obovatum was the best free radical scavenger, and a relevant cytotoxic effect was found in T. lacistrum extract over HeLa and HepG2 cell lines.
Taken together, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy that processes antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity, in a type-dependent manner, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Resveratrol and Citroflavan-3-ol Found in #Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Process Free Radicals Scavenging Activity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases, some studies suggested.
Oxidative stress is a production of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
The imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body can be caused either by the overproduction of free radicals or antioxidant enzymes suppressed by outside sources.
However, most outside sources that suppress the levels of antioxidant enzymes also play an important role in stimulating the overexpression of free radicals, such as chemical toxins
Free radicals are unstable atoms with unpaired electrons in the outer ring. Therefore, in order for them to become stable, free radical either donates or steals an electron from stable molecules, leading to a chain of reaction that facilitates the onset of oxidative stress.
The chain once starts, it can not stop until the electron on the outer ring is paired or inhibited by an antioxidant.
Free radical has been known to cause oxidative damage to enzymes, other protein, unsaturated fatty acid, phospholipids, DNA, and RNA.
Antioxidants are stable molecules found abundantly in fruits, vegetables, and herbal medicine.
If oxidative stress-related diseases are associated with the overproduction of free radicals, then long-term intake of a healthy diet high in fruits, and vegetables and less in red meat and saturated and trans fat and processed foods can reduce the risk of the diseases in healthy individuals.
Dr. Halliwell B, in the study to reaffirm the effect of healthy dietary patterns against the onset of oxidative stress, said, " diet-derived antioxidants may be particularly important in protecting against these diseases" and
"The physiological relevance of these effects is uncertain, as is the optimal intake of most diet-derived antioxidants. In principle, these questions could be addressed by examining the effects of dietary composition and/or antioxidant supplementation upon parameters of oxidative damage in vivo".
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.
The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.
Dr. Bol'shakova IV, the lead author at the Emanuel Institute of Biochemical Physics claim, that Arctostaphylos UVA. processes a significant antioxidant property in the inhibition of free radicals generation, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the concentration of compound that inhibited cell growth by 50% (IC(50)) of a range of phytochemicals and plant extracts.
All selected extracts were differentiated according to the antioxidant and genoprotective effects under conditions of oxidative stress in U937 cells.
Two phytochemicals-resveratrol and citroflavan-3-ol isolated from the herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi demonstrated the highest IC50 value of 13.7 microg/mL, compared to the lowest at 9,400 microg/mL. of Echinacea.
Extract of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi displayed a significant attenuation of the oxidative stress induced by the etoposide injection by inhibiting the expression of H2O2- and tBOOH-induced DNA damage.
These results reconfirmed the findings of Dr. Bol'shakova IV team that herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi as a non-nutrient dietary constituent may act as significant bioactive compounds in enhancing the antioxidant activity and stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes if the herb is administrated in an animal model.
Moreover, Dr.Matsuda H the antioxidant team leader at Kinki University, Osaka in the finding the natural compounds or whole food with potential antioxidant effects evaluated the inhibitory effect of 50% ethanol extracts obtained from the leaves of six Arctostaphylos plants (A. patula, A. viscida, A. canescens, A. Columbiana, A. nevadensis and A. uva-ursi) (Ericaceae).
Injection of the extracts of A. patula showed potent inhibition against tyrosinase, the enzyme that causes oxidation of the skin pigment.
Also, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi not only inhibited the production of melanin from dopachrome by autoxidation but reduced the over-exhibited SOD (superoxide dismutase, free radical)-like activity.
Additionally, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi processed a moderate absorbance in the UV-B area.
The results not only reaffirm the claim of Dr. Bol'shakova IV's suggestion but also introduce a new herbal whitening medicine for the skin.
Taken together, Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of oxidative-related diseases.

#Withanolides (WA) Found in Ashwagandha Root #Extract Protect the Liver Against Injury and Damage Induced by #Oxidativestress
Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body, and plays an essential role in filtering blood from the intestine before passing it to other parts of the body.
The organ also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that is needed to aid digestion and build strong cell membranes, production of steroid hormones, and vitamins.
Liver injury may be a result caused by physical impact or penetrating trauma. In some cases, liver injury can also be induced by toxicity, leading to acute liver injury.
Liver injury can be mild or severe. In a mild case, liver injury can recover itself. However, in severe cases, surgery to stop the bleeding and remove the part of injury may be necessary.
Most cases of liver injury can lead to abdominal pain and tenderness caused by bleeding blood in the abdomen that irritates the abdominal tissue.
The severity of a liver injury can be diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) or ultrasonography.
According to the statistics, liver injury has been found to constitute 5% of all traumas, making it the most common abdominal injury.
The most common symptoms associated with liver injury are shocks due to severe bleeding inducing a rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, and cold, clammy, pale or bluish skin.
In some cases, blood accumulated in the abdomen may irritate the abdominal tissue, leading to symptoms of abdominal pain and swelling, and tenderness.
Depending on the degree of injury, patients are either treated with nonoperative management and observation for a full self-recovery or surgery.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effects of withanolides (WA) from Withania somnifera root extract on hepatic toxicity in an animal model
According to the tested analysis, the application of WA profoundly protects wild-type mice but not Nrf2-disrupted mice against APAP hepatotoxicity.
Where Nrf2 is a protein that regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins against oxidative damage.
In vivo and in vitro, WA is a potent inducer of Nrf2-dependent cytoprotective enzyme expression.
In other words, WA protects the liver damage against oxidative stress by enhancing the function by the activation of antioxidant enzyme protein independently to a redox-regulated substrate adaptor protein Keap1 and dependently on the pathway associated with limited proliferation in cells.
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed a high amount of bioactive compound WA may be considered supplements for the prevention of liver toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#GreenBeans Protect the Liver Against the Onset of Stress Markers, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by overexpression of free radicals in the body.
In other words, oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants caused by abundant free radicals and low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.
A free radical is an unstable atom with a single electron on the outermost ring. Given its nature, free radicals readily donate or intercept an electron from another atom, leading to a chain of the free radical cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Antioxidants are stable atoms with a function to inhibit oxidation, come either from dietary sources or produced by the body.
In contrast to general belief, free radical is also needed in a moderated amount for the function of the heart muscle to pump blood such as NO for vasodilation and increasing blood flow.
In a healthy person, oxidative stress is harmful because it not only induces cells' lipid and protein oxidation but also causes the change of cell DNA, leading to diseases associated with oxidative stress including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Ozone, certain pesticides, and cleaners, cigarette smoke, radiation, and pollution are some of the risk factors associated with the increased risk of oxidative stress.
Liver stress markers such as serum MDA refer to oxidative stress in the liver tissues caused by the overexpression of free radicals or reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes in the liver.
Dr. Halina Cichoż-Lach, the lead scientist said, "Redox state constitutes an important background of numerous liver disorders. The redox state participates in the course of inflammatory, metabolic and proliferative liver diseases.".
And, "Hepatocytic proteins, lipids, and DNA are among the cellular structures that are primarily affected by ROS and reactive nitrogen species. The process results in structural and functional abnormalities in the liver".
In other words, liver oxidative stress over the long-term induced damage of proteins, and lipid and alternation of cell DNA can lead to liver diseases, including cancer.
Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belongs to the family Fabaceae, and is native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.
On finding a natural compound for the prevention of liver stress, researchers examined the effect of cabbage, green beans, or seeds from sunflowers grown either on municipal sewage sludge-amended soil or soil alone fed to male and female Coturnix quail, as 50% of a complete diet, for 5 weeks.
Green beans fed male and female Coturnix quail exhibited liver GST activities significantly lower compared to those fed with sludge-grown cabbage.
Compared to the levels of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST) soil-grown cabbage demonstrated a two-fold activity increase in birds fed the other plants.
More precisely, the levels of glucosinolates present in the cabbage, are 3040 and 9253 ppm (dry basis) in the sludge-grown and soil-grown cabbage, respectively.
In other words, green beans showed a significant reduction of liver stress markers lesser than those of cabbage, regardless of soil cultivation.
Taken together, green beans may be considered a liver-protective veggie, pending to the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
