#Herbal Angelica Inhibits Oxidativestress Associated with a Reduced Risk of #ColorectalCancer, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

The colorectum including the large intestine and the rectum is the second part of the digestive system involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them be reabsorbed and reused by the body.
The colon also is known as the large bowel or large intestine, forms parts of the digestive system in our body.

The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon.

The main functions of the colon are to reabsorb fluids process waste products from the body and prepare for their elimination.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon or rectum.

Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon and rectum, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferation.

Colorectal cancer is a relatively very slow-growing cancer that progresses in a predictable way.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.

In 2019, approximately 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.

The 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%. Sadly, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

The most common types of colorectal cancer classified depending on the primary originated cells are
* Adenocarcinomas
Most bowel cancers are adenocarcinomas, originating in epithelium tissues, including the surface layer of skin, glands, and tissues that line the cavities and organs of the body.

* Squamous cell cancers
Squamous cells are the skin-like cells that make up the bowel lining together with the gland cells. Squamous cell cancers are rare with a risk of 25 per 100000 population.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancers, scientists examined the chemopreventive effect of the supercritical extracts from Angelica sinensis (SFE-AS) on induced colorectal carcinoma in mice.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of selected male colorectal carcinoma mice that were subcutaneously injected with a single dose of azoxymethane (AOM, 10 mg x kg(-1) body weight) then one week later, given 2% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) in drinking water for 7 days to induce colorectal carcinoma, following by oral administration of supercritical extracts from Angelica sinensis at 15, 30, 60 mg x kg(-1) until the 17th week,* The Tumor-bearing quantity and tumor-bearing volume of the SFE-AS group were lower than that of the AOM/DSS model control group.

* The SFE-AS group also showed a significant reduction of oxidative stress in the AOM/DSS-induced mouse colorectal carcinoma model associated with inflammation.

In other words, the application of Angelica sinensis at 15, 30, and 60 mg x kg(-1) and strong inhibitory activity against 2% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) induced colorectal carcinoma,

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "SFE-AS showed an intervention effect in the incidence and development of AOM/DSS-induced mouse colorectal carcinoma associated with inflammation, and could be further used in chemo-preventive studies on human colorectal carcinoma".

Taken together, Herbal Angelica may be considered an anti-colorectal cancer herbal remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot Inhibits Microglial Activation Associated with the Treatment of #NeurodegenerativeDiseases, Reserachers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Neurodegenerative disease is the class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons that occurs mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slow loss of neuron in the brain that affects memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into an advanced stage.

According to the statistics, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, and approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.

Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing to improve dementia symptoms and slowing down the progression of the disease.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the neuroprotective effect of Tussilagone (TSL) on LPS-induced neuronal cell death.

According to the tested assays, 4 sesquiterpenoids isolated from the TSL showed a significant effect against the production of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, and tumor necrosis factor-α in LPS-treated BV-2 cells.

In other words, the sesquiterpenoids inhibited the production of free radicals and proinflammatory expression associated with the BV-2 cells' oxidative stress induced by LPS.

More precisely, the inhibition against the initiation of oxidative stress was attributed to the sesquiterpenoids' activity in blocking the activation of the proinflammatory (NF-κB) pathway

Furthermore, the sesquiterpenoids also inhibited LPS-induced neuronal cell death in the co-culture system by inhibiting the expression of NF-κB pathway and scavenging of ROS.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "sesquiterpenoids from Tussilago farfara may have beneficial therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases through inhibition of microglial activation".

Taken together, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neurological disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Onion Reduces The Risk of Esophageal Cancer, According to Clinical Trials

Kyle J. Norton

An esophagus or gullet, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads food from the pharynx to the stomach.
Esophageal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of the esophagus due to the alternation of the cell DNA.

More precisely, esophageal cancer can be a result of DNA alternation of the cells that line the upper part of the esophagus or glandular cells that line the lower part of the esophagus, connecting to the stomach.

Patients with esophageal cancer at a very early stage due to the very small size of the tumor are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, esophageal cancer tends to travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

The most common areas of metastasis of esophageal cancer are lymph nodes around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach, and chest.

According to the statistics, esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cause of cancer death among men. In 2019, about 17,650 new esophageal cancer cases will be diagnosed, including 13,750 men and 3,900 women.

Esophageal cancer will cause the death of 16,080 Americans, including 13,020 men and 3,060 women.

Believe it or not, esophageal cancer is more common among men than among women. The lifetime risk of esophageal cancer in the US is 1 in 132 in men and about 1 in 455 in women.

Esophageal cancer can be classified, depending on the location in which the cancer starts
* Squamous cancer
If the cancer cell starts in the upper part of the esophagus caused by the DNA alternation of the squamous cell.

* Adenocarcinomas
If the cancer cell starts in the lower part of the esophagus caused by the DNA and alternation of the glandular cells.

The most common symptoms of esophageal cancer are difficulty swallowing or pain caused by refluxing or swallowing, pain in the throat or back, behind the breastbone, heartburn, hoarseness or coughing, coughing blood, and accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, closely related of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of esophageal cancer, researchers examined the effect of raw garlic/onion consumed at least one time per week on the development of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in three different sections of the esophagus.

The study included a total of 343 patients with SCC of the esophagus and 755 cancer-free control subjects recruited for this study from 1996 to 2005.

According to the results of tested assays, intake of raw onions/garlic, and fruits is significantly protective against esophageal SSC risk compared to the increased risk of hot foods.

In other words, adding additional certain dietary components may affect carcinogenesis locally and systemically.

Furthermore, according to the study of the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche "Mario Negri",
consumption of onions showed a protective effect on esophageal cancer, compared to garlic and other vegetables.

More precisely, onion and garlic intake improved the relative risk ratio by 0.12 and 0.43, respectively.

The results strongly suggested the inverse association between the frequency of use of allium vegetables such as onion and garlic against the risk of several common cancers, including esophageal cancer

Dr. Galeone C wrote in the final report, "Allium vegetables are a favorable correlate of cancer risk in Europe".

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of adjuvant esophageal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Coffee Exerts a Reduced Risk of Parkinson's Disease, Particularly in Women, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of coffee caffeine regularly is associated with a significantly attenuated risk of neurodegenerative conditions, particularly in the onset of Parkinson's disease, a recent study suggested.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a deficiency of dopamine and. degeneration of the basal ganglia of the brain, affecting muscular normal function.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, in comparison, the population comprised 47,351 men and 88,565 women free of Parkinson's disease, stroke, or cancer at baseline, caffeine intake is associated to reduced risk and progression of PD, in compared the top and bottom one-fifth men participants. No effect is found for decaffeinating coffee intake regardless of the number of cups consumed.

Interestingly, among women, a number of caffeinated coffee intake daily has a strong implication in the attenuated risk of PD linearly, in comparison to the lowest intake of moderated intake groups.

Furthermore, a case-control study was conducted in western Washington State in 1992-2000. Incident PD cases (n = 210) and controls (n = 347) with frequency matched on gender and age identified from enrollees of the Group Health Cooperative health maintenance organization, returned questionnaires by participants indicated, that consumption of 2 cups/day showed a strong expression in reduced risk of PD.

More importantly, in the review of twenty-six studies included: 7 cohorts, 2 nested case-control, 16 case-control, and 1 cross-sectional study, the total relative odd ratio for the association between caffeine intake in low to moderate groups and PD was 0.75.

However, in cohort studies, reduced risk of PD significantly decreased if only women participants were considered.

Researchers, in the above study, revealed that PD risk is associated with a linear relationship between levels of caffeine exposure of a relatively odd ratio of 0.76, per 300 mg caffeine intake.

Taken together, there is no doubt that the risk of PD has an extremely inverse association with caffeine intake, particularly in moderated drinkers.

#Lycopene and Total #Carotenoid Levels in the Body Are Associated with A Reduced Risk of Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases (#COPD), Reserachers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The lungs are a pair of organs located on either side of the chest (thorax) with a function to bring fresh oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide and other waste gases from the body.

According to the statistics provided by the Lung Association over 3 million Canadians are affected by one of five serious respiratory diseases – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and cystic fibrosis.

In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians in the same year.

The exact causes of lung disease are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested
being overweight, smoking, family history, and smoking are some of the most prevalent factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Most common lung diseases in North America include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis.

Symptoms of lung disease are totally depending on the type of disease.

The most common diseases associated with allergic airway inflammation are
* Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages and mostly starts during childhood.

*Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death in the US can be classified into
** Emphysema caused by damage to tissues of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)associated with a long-term and progressive condition caused by shortness of breath but depending on the stage of lung function.

** Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammation of the lung’s bronchi that causes the increased production of mucus in the lung-induced symptoms of difficulty breathing.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of asthma researchers examined the effects of ascorbic acid (AA), carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, α-carotene, β-carotene, and lycopene), retinol and α-tocopherol levels in Japanese patients with chronic obstructive lung diseases (COPD).

Based on the tested analysis, compared to other phytochemicals, plasma AA level was significantly lower in COPD subjects than that of healthy elderly people.

Levels of plasma lycopene and total carotenoid levels associated with levels of antioxidant enzymes such as GSH content produced by the host were significantly lower in COPD subjects comapred to those of healthy elderly people without affecting the redox markers such as GSSG, GSH/GSSG ratio associated with the oxidative stress in the lung tissues.

Lycopene and total carotenoid levels did not lower the marker of the levels of urinary 8-OHdG detected in COPD subjects compared to healthy elderly people.

In other words, increased levels of lycopene and total carotenoid levels in the body may have a strong impact on reducing the risk of COPD

Based on the findings, researchers said, "COPD of Japanese patients may develop partly because of oxidative stress derived from a shortage of antioxidant nutrients, especially of AA and lycopene".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a remedy for the prevention of COPD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Indicaxanthin inhibits Lipid-Oxidation, Promotes Free Radical Scavenging and Interaction with other Antioxidants, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that function to protect the body against oxidative stress by inhibiting free radical oxidation before they can facilitate a chain reaction or by stopping the chain reaction before they can cause damage to the body.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules. Internally, they are produced by our body cell metabolism. Externally, free radicals can enter our bodies from environmental sources, such as the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink.

More precisely, any chemical compounds or molecules that process oxygen atoms can be free radicals after chemical interaction.

Believe it or not, free radicals in moderate amounts benefit the body's functioning, such as NO for vascular-relaxation.

However, without interfering with the antioxidant, overexpression of free radicals has been found epidemiologically to damage the lipid and protein and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, including arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Out of all damages caused by overexpression of free radicals, some researchers suggested that lipid peroxidation induced by free radicals has a strong implication in the pathogenesis of various disorders and diseases.

Dr. Kota V. Ramana, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the University of Texas Medical Branch, wrote, "Lipid peroxidation is a complex chain reaction process due to the oxygen-free radicals mediated attack of cell membrane lipids such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) resulting in cell damage and dysfunction".

And, "Indeed, a number of preclinical and clinical studies suggest the involvement of lipid peroxidation products in numerous pathological conditions such as inflammation, atherosclerosis, diabetes, aging, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer".

In other words, an antioxidant with free radical scavenging activity may protect the body against the damage of various cellular components, including proteins, lipids, and DNA in the initiation of diseases.

Indicaxanthin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of diseases involved in oxidative stress, researchers examined the free radical-scavenging activity of indicaxanthin.

According to the tested analysis on the reaction of the phytochemical indicaxanthin with lipoperoxyl radicals generated in methyl linoleate methanol solution by 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile), and in aqueous soybean phosphatidylcholine unilamellar liposomes by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride,

* Indicaxanthin incorporated in liposomes prevented lipid oxidation.

* The free radical scavenging property was found to be concentration-dependent, but not linearly related to the phytochemical concentration.

* In liposome, indicaxanthin showed a significant delay against oxidation, particularly in that of the lower concentration.

* However, in the corporation with alpha-tocopherol, Indicaxanthin exhibited cooperative antioxidant effects and reciprocal protective interactions.

* The increase of the ratio (indicaxanthin)/(alpha-tocopherol) showed a significant decrease in the extent of synergistic effects.

Taken together, indicaxanthin processes strong free radical scavenging activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric's #Curcumins Show a Reduction of Radiation Dermatitis Severity, Pain, Symptoms, and Improve Quality of Life in Radiation Therapy (RT) in Cancer Patients, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Radiodermatitis is a skin condition caused by exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly in patients with radiotherapy during cancer treatment.
The most common symptoms of RD are red patches accompanied by blistering.

Radiodermatitis can be classified
* Acute radiodermatitis develops in a few hours or weeks after the first exposure to radiation. The condition is healed itself in a short period of time

* Chronic RD is a condition of radiodermatitis that develops months, years, or even decades after radiation.

The persistent reaction of RD can lead to complications of telangiectasia, a condition of widened venules (tiny blood vessels) that cause threadlike red lines or patterns on the skin, leading to
reduced quality of life and cosmetic outcomes.

Dr. Sophie Seité, the lead scientist in the differentiation of the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic radiodermatitis wrote, "Today, treatment of radiodermatitis reactions is in its infancy. Although there is insufficient evidence available to form recommendations that would prevent or reduce radiodermatitis, some advances have been made using low-level light therapy (LLLT) or vascular lasers to control the symptoms".

And, "Some recent preclinical and clinical research suggests that LLLT has bio-stimulating properties which allow the tissues to regenerate and heal faster, reduce inflammation, and prevent fibrosis. Also, in late-onset radiodermatitis pulsed dye laser treatment has been shown to be beneficial in clearing radiation-induced telangiectasia. In the absence of evidence-based recommendations, the objective of this paper is to review how to prevent or manage the symptoms of radiodermatitis reactions".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antioxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to discover a natural compound for the treatment of radiodermatitis, a condition found to occur in 95% of patients receiving radiation therapy (RT) for cancer, researchers examined the efficacy of oral curcumin, one of the biologically active components in turmeric, at reducing radiation dermatitis severity (RDS) at the end of RT, using the RDS scale, compared to placebo.

The multisite, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial involved in 686 breast cancer patients who received either four 500-mg capsules of placebo or curcumin three times daily throughout their prescribed course of RT until 1-week post-RT.

More than 3% of the curcumin-treated group showed a reduction of radiation dermatitis severity compared to placebo.

The treatment group also report a change in pain, symptoms, and quality of life however, they were not statistically significant between arms.

In other words, oral curcumin reduced radiation dermatitis severity compared to placebo but not significantly.

In order to clarify the effect of curcumin on reducing radiation dermatitis severity (RDS) researchers assessed the ability of curcumin in 30 breast cancer patients.

The study involved 30 adult females with noninflammatory breast cancer or carcinoma in situ prescribed RT (receiving radiotherapy) without concurrent chemotherapy, received 2.0 grams of curcumin or placebo orally three times per day (i.e., 6.0 grams daily) throughout their course of RT.

According to the weekly assessments and the Standard pooled variances t-test, curcumin reduced RDS compared to placebo at end of treatment.

Furthermore, 28.6% of curcumin-treated patients had moist desquamation, compared to placebo of 87.5%, according to Fisher's exact test.

Demographics, compliance, radiation skin dose, redness, pain, or symptoms are not significant differences in both groups.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "oral curcumin, 6.0 g daily during radiotherapy, reduced the severity of radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of radiodermatitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
