#Coffee Inhibits Clusters Associated with an Increased Risk of #MetabolicSyndrome, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

In comparison to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending on the stages of the treatment that directly address the cause of the disease.
Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, abnormally high blood cholesterol, and triglyceride levels,.....

A joint study by respectable institutes suggested that intake of coffee and coffee caffeine daily and regularly may be associated with an attenuated risk of metabolic syndrome.

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularlybeans in the West, made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the searching of the database from f PubMed and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for relevant articles published between 1 January 1999 and 31 May 2015, including 11 published reports and 13 studies with a total of 159,805 participants were eligible for our meta-analysis, the relative odd risk ratio of metabolic syndrome between the highest vs lowest category of coffee consumption was 0.872

The review also observed a non-linear relationship between coffee and coffee caffeine consumption in ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome, by dose-response analysis.

Additionally, in a cross-sectional population-based survey of 8,821 adults (51.4% female) conducted in Krakow, Poland. to evaluate the coffee and tea consumption and risk of metabolic syndrome, using food frequency questionnaires, observation of the questionnaire returned from participants expressed an interesting association between high coffee consumption of 3 cups and the clusters of lower BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, and higher HDL cholesterol than those drinking less than 1 cup/day.

The study apparently indicated that people drinking 3 cups of coffee daily and regularly have a favorably ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome even after adjusting for potential confounding factors.

More importantly, the study also pointed out that high coffee consumption was negatively associated with waist circumference, hypertension, and triglycerides in women but not in men.

Furthermore, in the animal evaluation of the effect of coffee drinking on clinical markers of diabetes and metabolic syndrome in Zucker rats including Diabetic Zucker rats with metabolic syndrome and control Zucker rats, researchers at the Fluminense Federal Institute postulated that after animals received daily doses of coffee drink by gavage for 30 days, coffee consumption expressed a decreased risk of metabolic syndrome in reduced serum glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides in compared to non treatment group.

Dr. Abrahão SA, the lead researcher said, "The results demonstrate that treatment with roasted coffee drink, because of its hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect, is efficient in the protection of animals with metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus type 2".

The findings from the above studies suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine drinking daily and regularly have a favorably profound effect in decreasing the risk of metabolic syndrome, particularly in women.

#Greentea inhibits the Genes and Pathways Associated with an Increased Symptoms Severity of #Osteoarthritis, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a condition characterized by aging progression of wear and tear on a joint, affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.

In a randomized open-label active-controlled clinical trial of 50 adults with osteoarthritis of the knee allocated to receive the green tea extract (in dosage form of the tablet) plus diclofenac tablet as "intervention group"; or: diclofenac tablet alone as "control group" for a period of four weeks, combination-treated group exerted a significant improvement of physical function in compared to control.

The treatment group also expressed similar progress in pain reduction during knee joint physical function in adults with osteoarthritis as in the control group.

Additionally, in comparing the effect of curcuminoid extract, hydrolyzed collagen, and green tea extract, in chondrocytes culture cells, researchers found that a combination of all components score an enormous expression of reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines through various mechanisms, including ameliorated free radical elucidation.

Furthermore, in support of the above differentiation, the study in the investigation of posttraumatic osteoarthritis (OA) mouse model tested with EGCG against the progression of OA and relieve OA-associated pain, suggested that EGCG-treated mice promoted cartilage production against Safranin O, staining of the knee joint cartilage loss and cartilage erosion in compared to control group with no treatment.

Importantly, the cartilage of treated mice also displays a significant reduction of the gene in regulated degeneration of connective tissue as well as pathways involved promotional of tissue inflammation.

Additionally, the pain score of treated mice also exhibited a significant enhancement, compared to a control group.

Taken together, there is no doubt that the green tea process a therapeutic and integrated form for the prevention and treatment of symptoms of pain as well as improved physical activity of OA patients through protection against cartilage degeneration.

#Ginger Exerts Gastroprotective Effects through Its Antioxidant Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may have a significant effect on the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, some scientists suggested.
Gastrointestinal disorders are medical conditions, involving the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.

Most common gastrointestinal disorders are very mildly associated with digestive discomforts that can be resolved in a few days.

The gastroprotective effect is an action that protects the gastrointestinal tract against the onset of any disease, including infection and inflammation.

The causes of digestive disorders can be multiple. Most gastrointestinal disorders are caused directly by the disorders of the digestive system such as poor diet patterns. However, long-term use of certain medications can also induce gastrointestinal disorders, including Manticholinergic medication, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antibiotics.

In the search for a diet therapy that can reverse and protect the digestive system against gastrointestinal disorders, researchers at the University of Florida, wrote, "Diet therapy through the elimination of offending foods such as wheat gluten or lactose, or inclusion of specialized products such as medium-chain triglycerides or elemental formulas, can sustain nutritional status".

And "Dietary components such as insoluble fiber appear to have physiologic effects, while soluble fibers may have metabolic effects important to diabetes and cardiovascular disease".

Additionally, in the differentiation of types of diet may have a direct contribution to reducing the risk of gastrointestinal disorders, the authors continued, "Avoiding offending foods by Crohn's patients is an acceptable practice as long as entire categories of foods are not deleted. Avoiding all foods containing gluten from wheat, rye, barley, and oats, however, is a crucial prerequisite to recovery from celiac disease. Gluten is commonly used as a stabilizer, emulsifier, and extender in the food industry and is not always shown on food labels. Careful consultation with a registered dietitian can identify hidden sources of gluten in the diet.".

These results clearly indicated, that depending on the types of gastrointestinal disorders, diet therapy with modification could have a strong impact on the prevention of the onset of the disease.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food that processes gastrointestinal protective effects, researchers looked into rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (Zingiberaceae), commonly known as ginger, an important kitchen spice, possessing myriad health benefits.

In laboratory animals., ginger was shown to be effective in preventing gastric ulcers induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs like indomethacin, aspirin], reserpine, ethanol, and acetic acid and Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric ulcerations.

The gastroprotective efficacy of ginger was attributed to its free radical scavenging, antioxidant; inhibition of lipid peroxidation activities.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the gastroprotective effect to examine the turmeric (Curcuma longa) and ginger (Zingiber officianale), researchers conducted a study in the ethanol-induced ulcers animal model.

Selected rats were given 100, 500, and 1000 mg/kg body weight orally.

Application of TEO and GEO inhibited ulcers caused by the injection of ethanol by 84.7% and 85.1%, respectively, as seen from the ulcer index.

The reduced antioxidant enzymes such as GPx, SOD, catalase, and GSH produced by alcohol administration were significantly (p<0.001) increased by the simultaneous administration of TEO and GEO.

Ethanol-induced lesions such as necrosis, erosion, and hemorrhage of the stomach wall were significantly reduced after the oral administration of essential oils.

These results strongly suggested turmeric and ginger exerted a significant gastroprotective effect against gastrointestinal lesions with no side effects.

Taken together, ginger may be considered functional for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders,

#GreenTea #EGCG, EGC, GTE, and BTE Reduce Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis RA throguh theirs Anti-Inflammatory Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J.Norton

Green tea exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in reduced symptoms and progression of
Rheumatoid Arthritis, a renowned institute study suggested

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints tissues, and organs in the body after the age of 40 and causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.

Green tea, a precious drink processes an umber of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including dizziness, low energy, weakened immunity, and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

According to the joint study led by Washington State University College of Pharmacy, green tea (EGCG, EGC, and EC) was shown to ameliorate the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators including (IL-6 and IL-8) and Cox-2 in primary human rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RASFs), through the effects of its phytochemical compounds of EGCG and EGC antioxidant activities.

Dr. Fechtner S, the lead researcher said," EGCG is the most effective catechin at inhibiting downstream inflammatory signaling, its effectiveness could be hindered by the presence of (epicatechin) EC".

In the investigation of the anti-inflammatory activity of green versus black tea aqueous extract in a rat model with orally/daily distilled water as the placebo, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight; a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug), or tea aqueous extracts (for 28 or 14 consecutive days administrated from day 0 or 14 of arthritis induction, respectively), group treated with a high dose of GTE (from day 0) significantly alleviated (P < 0.05-0.001) the progression and all complications induced by rheumatoid arthritis in compared placebo.

More importantly, Researchers also found that the expression of the anti-arthritic activity of the high dose of GTE (from day 0) mediated by significantly decreasing the systemic production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the expression of chemokine receptor-5, a protein in activated immune activities in the in synovial tissues, was comparable (P > 0.05) with that of indomethacin (12.9-53.8 vs. 9.5-48.4%, respectively).

Furthermore, the anti-arthritic potency of tea aqueous extracts was dosed dependent on the order of a high dose of GTE > low dose of GTE ≥ high dose of BTE > low dose of BTE.

Another study suggested that green tea extract reduced symptoms and risk of complications probably are the result in regulating chemokine(a family of cytokines secreted by cells) production in an immune reaction and chemokine receptor expression in interaction with proinflammatory cytokines of human RA synovial fibroblasts in rat adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA).

Taking together, green tea may be served as a functional food to reduce symptoms and risk of complications for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

#Phytochemical #Allicin Activates Proteins Associated with Cancer Cell Death through Degradation, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Gastric cancer is a condition caused by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.
At the later stage, liver cancer cells may travel a distance away from the liver to infect other healthy tissue, leading to secondary metastasis through blood and fluids circulation.

According to the American Cancer Society, every year, approximately 26,000 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (16,000 in men and 9,000 in women). Cancer causes the death of over10,000 people, including 6,000 men and 4,000 women).

The cause of gastric cancer is a result of the alternation of cell DNA in the stomach. Researchers do not know what causes the cell DNA alternation, but they do know certain risk factors such as smoking, family history, genetic preposition, certain diseases associated with the stomach and previous stomach surgery are involved in the onset of the disease.

However, some researchers suggested that infection caused by Helicobacter pylori is the most important risk factor for gastric cancer.

Dr. Lydia E. Wroblewski, the lead author examined the effects of Helicobacter pylori in the risk of gastric cancer and wrote, "Helicobacter pylori is a gastric pathogen that colonizes approximately 50% of the world's population. Infection with H. pylori causes chronic inflammation and significantly increases the risk of developing duodenal and gastric ulcer disease and gastric cancer".

And, "Infection with H. pylori is the strongest known risk factor for gastric cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide".

Allicin is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

With an aim to find the natural compound for the treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the allicin, an active compound derived from garlic anti-cancer effects.

Allicin injection reduced cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, partly through induction of apoptosis in gastric cancer cells.

At the molecular level, allicin induced cancer death through the degradation of cancer cells through activation of the proteins associated with the stimulation of cell apoptosis, including the caspase-3, -8, and -9 and Bax and fas expression.

Allicin treatment also inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in SGC-7901 cancer cells.

Dr. the lead researcher said, "Data from the current study demonstrated that allicin should be further investigated as a novel cancer preventive or therapeutic agent in control of gastric cancer, with potential uses in other tumor types".

In a total of patients with progressive gastric adenocarcinoma, whose diagnosis was by gastroscopy and pathological examination assigned to 2 groups, 40 in each group, researchers examined the effects of local application of allicin via gastroscopy on progressive gastric carcinoma.

Allicin group showed the cell apoptosis rate of 9.60 +/- 1.52%, the percentage of cell in G0/G1 phase of 72.12 +/- 8.35%, in G2/M phase 9.54 +/- 3.20%, and PI 27.80 +/- 8.35, compared to the rate of 2.20 +/- 0.58%, 69.56 +/- 5.15%, 13.20 +/- 3.05%, and 30.40 +/- 5.15 in control.

The efficacy of allicin was attributed to the inhibition of the function of a protein (gene Bcl-2) associated with cancer cell anti-apoptosis and exhibition of the function of proteins (gene Bax and Fas) associated with the pro-apoptosis.

These results suggested that local application of allicin via gastroscopy can inhibit the cell growth and proliferation of progressive gastric carcinoma, and can also promote gastric carcinoma cell apoptosis, according to the final report by Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Hebei Medical University.

Taken altogether, phytochemical allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer

The Effects #Cinnamon on #Diabetes, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Cinnamon, a kitchen spicy in many cultures, may have gained many believers, including medical professionals because of its anti-diabetic effect, through regulating the blood glucose levels in healthy and diabetic subjects. According to herbalists, intake of 1/4 tsp. in the morning and evening may reduce blood sugar significantly with little or no adverse effects.

The herb has been used in herbal and traditional medicine as an anti-fungal and bacteria levels to improve the reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.(1).

According to the 2011 statistic from National Diabetes InformationClearinghouse (NDIC), among U.S. residents ages 65 years and older, 10.9 million, or 26.9 percent, had diabetes in 2010, about 215,000 people younger than 20 years had diabetes—type 1 or type 2—in the United States in 2010 and approximately, 1.9 million people ages 20 years or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2010 in the United States.

In a total of 66 patients with type 2 diabetes study conducted by Xuhui District Central Hospital, showed a significant reduction of blood triglyceride levels in the low-dose group, after 3 months of oral administration(2)

Some researchers suggested that cinnamon extract may improve fasting blood glucose levels and glucose tolerance without altering insulin secretion, through lower triglyceride increased liver glycogen content, and improved insulin action in liver tissues(3).

Dr. Kim SH and Dr. Choung SY. told PubMed "The effect of cinnamon significantly increases insulin sensitivity, reduces serum, and hepatic lipids, and improves hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia possibly by regulating the PPAR(in the regulation of metabolism (carbohydrate, lipid, protein))-medicated glucose and lipid metabolism"(4)

In support of the above, chromium(Cr) and polyphenols found in cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) indicated an improvement of glucose, insulin, cholesterol, and HbA1c(A glucose lab test) in patients with type 2 diabetes following Cr supplementation, in a double-blind placebo-controlled study(7).

Unfortunately, according to the Western University of Health Sciences, consumption of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in levels of fasting plasma glucose but insisted that a high degree of heterogeneity may limit the ability to apply these results to patient care, due to the unclear preferred dose and duration of therapy(5)

A randomized clinical trial in which 70 patients with type II diabetes were assigned randomly to two groups (35 in cinnamon and 35 in the placebo group the test the effect of cinnamon on the glucose level in the blood, indicated an insignificant effect of using cinnamon on glucose level of diabetic patients and the herb should not be recommended to patients with type II diabetes depending on further studies(6).

Taken together, cinnamon in a low dose may be effective in controlling the levels of blood glucose in patients with diabetes without altering the insulin level. According to DR. Georgakopoulou EA., oral intake of Cinnamon may cause Stomatitis(7), and a burning sensation in the mouth with a large amount. Traditional Chinese medicine also insists that an Overdose of cinnamon can be toxic and damage the liver(1).

75% of #Cranberry Combined with 25% of #Rhodiola Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Rsik of #Diabetes and #Hypertension, According to Researchers

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by not insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream.
In other words, diabetes is a condition associated with the inability of the body to use insulin properly.

Most cases of insulin insufficiency in the bloodstream in diabetes are either caused by the gradual died-off of the pancreas beta cells or insulin receptors clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Hallmarks of diabetes are hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.

According to the statistics, in 2017, 7.3% of Canadians aged 12 and older (roughly 2.3 million people) reported being diagnosed with diabetes.

The most common causes of diabetes are metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose, gestational diabetes, prediabetes, and damage to the pancreas that causes the gradual and irreversible loss of beta cells that reduce the production of insulin, and influenza a viruses

Hypertension, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and changes constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States are living with high blood pressure, or 1 in 3 Americans are hypertensive.

Hypertension is a leading risk factor of heart disease and stroke that cause most death in the US

The most common prevalent factors associated with the condition onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and medical condition such as chronic kidney disease.

Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the management of blood pressure, researchers examined the effect of a water-soluble cranberry-based phytochemical combination with oregano, rosemary, and Rhodiola Rosea against hypertension.

According to the tested analysis, the 75% cranberry with 25% oregano combinations showed the highest antioxidant phenolics (38.9 mg/g DW) comapred to other combinations by inhibition of free radical DPPH inhibition by 73.6 %.

Furthermore, the 75% cranberry and 25% Rhodiola Rosea combination had the highest alpha-glucosidase activity among the combinations.

Alpha-amyloid-associated diabetes also was associated with 75% cranberry with 25% Rhodiola Rosea combination comapred to other combinations.

Additionally, anti-ACE-I inhibitory activity against the risk of hypertension was also inhibited by the 75% cranberry with 25% rosemary comapred to other combinations.

In other words, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine protects patients with diabetes and hypertension against complications by inhibiting the levels of alpha-glucosidase, alpha-amyloid, and ACE-I

Based on the results, researchers said, "The analysis of alpha-glucosidase,alpha-amylase, and ACE-I inhibitory activities suggested that inhibition depends on the phenolic profile of each unique extract and by bringing together synergistic combinations to cranberry, health beneficial functionality was enhanced".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the management of diabetes and hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
