#Cranberry Ameliorates HFD-Induced Metabolic Disturbances, and Prevents the Early onset of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated in the liver over time, in the absence of excessive alcohol use. The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFl) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)(1).

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

According to world statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is normally known as a disease of the Western world(2). However, due to the economic prosperity of Southeast Asia (3), the disease also was found in a large population in the cities, causing concerns of many scientists in the region(4)(6).

According to the joint assessment of the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk factors for advanced fibrosis and mortality in the US, led by the Stanford University School of Medicine, "The prevalence of NAFLD in the United States (U.S.) has risen from 18% in 1988–1991 to 31% in 2011–2012. Estimates of NAFLD prevalence for adults in Western countries are 20–30%, with much higher prevalence in adults with obesity (80–90%), diabetes (30–50%), and hyperlipidemia (90%)"(5).

The exact causes of NAFLD aren't well understood. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as long-term use of certain medications(8), genetic preposition(8), insulin resistance(8), high cholesterol(8) and triglycerides(8) in the blood, polycystic ovary syndrome(8), metabolic syndrome(8), obesity(8), and type 2 diabetes(8) are associated with the onset of the disease.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers investigated cranberry effects on metabolic profiles, including that during the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in a high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6 mice.

According to the results of the experiment, the application of cranberry reduced the levels of oxidative stress in mice that were fed HFD diets with supplementation of 1 and 5% cranberry powder, compared to HFD-fed control mice.

1 week after beginning the diets to the end of the study, the body weight of mice in the cranberry-treatment groups was significantly lower, compared to mice in the HFD-fed control group.

Furthermore, during the early treatment phase, the injection of cranberry suppressed the elevation of serum triglycerides, leading to the smaller of adipocytes in the adipose tissues in HFD-fed mice compared to the cells in HFD-fed control mice.

More importantly, the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) characteristics of the levels of lipid-droplet formation and hepatocyte ballooning in the liver were drastically decreased in cranberry-supplemented-HFD-fed mice relative to the levels in HFD-fed control mice.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Cranberry ameliorates HFD-induced metabolic disturbances, particularly during the early treatment stage, and exhibits considerable potential for preventing the progression of NAFLD.".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a functional food for the treatment of NAFLD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel and Vitamin E Inhibit Abdominal Muscle Constriction Associated with Painful Primary #Dysmenorrhea, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Adding a portion of fennel to your daily diet may have a potential and positive effect in reduced pain caused by sensory neuron stimulus in women with primary dysmenorrhea, some scientists suggested.

Antinociceptive activity is an action or process of blocking the painful or injurious stimulus by sensory neurons.

The results of the investigation were carried out by a number of respectable institutes, including the Babol University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, and details of the experiment were published in the online medical library.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In order to compare the effect of the combination of fennel extract/vitamin E with ibuprofen on the intensity of pain in primary dysmenorrhea among the students of Tabriz city in 2007-2009, researchers of the joint study led by the Kosar Department of Shahid Motahhary Hospital carried out an investigation of 68 students from Medical and Tabriz universities, who were living in the dormitory, suffering from primary dysmenorrhea.

All participants were randomly divided into two groups of 34 students each (the two groups used a combination of fennel extract/vitamin E and ibuprofen cross-over form in the 2 months).

Application of the combination displayed a mean of peak pain intensity in the first, second, third, sixth, and forty-eight hours in the group was significantly lower than the group that had used ibuprofen.

Also, a combination of fennel extract/vitamin E was more effective than ibuprofen in the first hour (P < 0.03) and second hour (P < 0.04), according to the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) tool for ranking the intensity of the pain.

These results suggested that the fennel and vitamin E combination was more efficacy in blocking the neuron in transmitting pain caused by overexpression prostaglandin hormone in the induction of abdominal muscle constriction in comparison to conventional medicine ibuprofen.

Dr. Nasehi M, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "Combination of fennel extract/vitamin E is effective on decreasing the intensity of pain of primary dysmenorrhea, and it is advised to those who cannot use chemical drugs".

In a separate study to investigate the effect of fennel used alone on primary dysmenorrhea symptoms and menorrhea duration, 80 female students satisfied the criteria, and guidelines were randomly divided into two groups of intervention (n = 40) and control (n = 40).

The intervention group was given one soft capsule of Fennel (30 mg) every 4 hours, 3 days before menstruation till the 5th day, and continued for 3 months. The control group received no medication.

According to the result of the experiments, the fennel-treated group exerted a significant decrease of the mean of nausea intensity and weakness from 1.93, and 2.88 after 3 months, in comparison to the control group from 2.37, and 6.65 in the control group.

Also in compared to the control group, the fennel group reduced the duration of the menstrual period after two and three months of use.

Moreover, Fennel treated group demonstrated a strong improvement in quality and feelings of well-being after 1 and 3 months.

Taken together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the treatment of Primary Dysmenorrhea without inducing adverse effects.

#Bromelain in the Improvement in Postprocedure #Ecchymosis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Ecchymosis is a discoloration of the skin caused by the bleeding underneath the skin, typically in bruising.
Most cases of ecchymosis are results in which the blood vessels near the surface of the skin burst, particularly in the impact of an injury.

In other words, ecchymosis is associated with blood vessel leaks, and the blood accumulates under the skin.

The discoloring of the skin is also involved in the clotting factors, that stop the bleeding so that the tissue starts healing.

The progression of ecchymosis is through a certain stage from red or purple to black or blue
to brown and to yellow.

Certain medications have been found to induce ecchymosis including:
* Blood thinners, such as aspirin or warfarin

*Antibiotics such as cephalexin, cefaclor, and cefuroxime-axetil can cause ecchymosis by inducing low platelet count

* Corticosteroids

According to the study from the University College Hospital, easy bruising tended to be older (61 vs 52 yrs), on higher daily dosages (1,388 vs 1,067 micrograms), particularly in the long-term inhaled corticosteroids users.

Most cases of ecchymosis usually heal on their own within two to three weeks. The most common medications used for the treatment of ecchymosis are pain relievers.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of ecchymosis, researchers examined the effects of bromelain on ecchymosis postprocedure unwanted effects.

The reconfirm the effect of bromelain used internationally by physicians on limited ecchymosis secondary to cosmetic, laser, and surgical skin procedures, researchers reviewed the published literature and provided evidence-based recommendations on bromelain for prevention and treatment of postprocedure ecchymosis.

The search on the computerized bibliographic databases Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, and CINAHL on March 23, 2015, identified 7 clinical trials that study the effect of oral bromelain in the prevention and/or treatment of postprocedure ecchymosis compared to no studies that use topical bromelain for the treatment of ecchymosis.

Based on the results, 5 out of 7 randomized controlled trials reported improvement in postprocedure ecchymosis in the bromelain-treated group.

Taken together, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the treatment of postprocedure ecchymosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberryextract Inhibits the Growth and Biofilm Formation of Periodontal Pathogens in Induced #Periodontitis, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Periodontitis is a serious case of gingivitis associated with gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth as a result of long-term poor oral hygiene
Periodontitis is preventable if the progression of gingivitis stages is stopped

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of periodontal disease caused by inflammation of the gingiva, leading to symptoms of irritation, redness, and swelling of the gum that lines the base of the teeth.

Gingivitis dental plaques formed around the base of the teeth are sticky biofilms of bacteria associated with the interaction of the food intake and bacteria in the mouth. Over time, if untreated, the condition can lead to periodontitis and advanced periodontitis.

At this early stage, the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected. The problems can be reversed by more frequent and proper brushing and flossing.

Epidemiologically, risk factors that induce the onset of gingivitis are smoking or chewing tobacco. diabetes and long-term use of certain medications including oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants, and calcium channel blockers.

Some people under the treatment of chemotherapy may also experience symptoms of gingivitis.

The Colgate Professional examined the symptoms and advised that if you have experienced some of the symptoms that do not heal themselves in a short time, such as puffy or swollen, or tender, bleeding during brushing or flossing,... and constant bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, you may have gingivitis.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. In finding a potential compound for the treatment of periodontitis, researchers examined the effect of cranberry and rice extracts as a potent gingipain inhibitor.

Based on the tested analysis, cranberry and rice extracts interfere with gingipain activity that causes the slowing down the progression of adult periodontitis.

Furthermore, the extracts prevented the growth and biofilm formation of periodontal pathogens and induced the onset of periodontitis.

Moreover, the extracts also inhibited a broad spectrum of host proteases in the induction of undesirable side effects

As of today, the ideal gingipain inhibitor has yet to be discovered, however, cranberry and rice extracts may be a promising gingipain inhibitor comapred to gingipain N-terminal pro domains, synthetic compounds, antibiotics, antiseptics, antibodies, and bacteria which may induce undesirable side effects

The results strongly suggested that cranberry promotes oral health by inhibiting the onset and progression of periodontitis through its anti-bacterial activity

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of periodontitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Broccoli and #Broccolisprout's #Sulforaphane (SFN) Inhibit Activities Associated with #DiabeticCardiomyopathy, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.
In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form of diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell
Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication found in patients with diabetes associated with reducing the heart function in circulating blood through the body, leading to heart failure and increased accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is classified into different types, depending on the damage that has been affected, including
* Microangiopathy is a disorder that affects small blood vessels, leading to impaired myocardial blood flow reserve.

* Autonomic neuropathy is a disorder that affects the nerves that manage everyday body functions, leading to abnormal blood pressure, heart rate.

* Endothelial dysfunction is a disorder associated with the damage of vascular endothelium. The condition is considered an early event of cardiovascular disease.

The most common causes of diabetic cardiomyopathy are myocardial dysfunction in the absence of overt clinical coronary artery disease, valvular disease, and other conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane, an active compound and an Nrf2 activator found in broccoli on diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), male db/db and age-matched wild-type (WT) mice.

According to the experimental results from the analysis of broccoli sprout extract (BSE) by gavage every other day for 3 months, with four groups: vehicle (0.1 ml/10 g), BSE-low dose (estimated SFN availability at 0.5 mg/kg), BSE-high dose (estimated SFN availability at 1.0 mg/kg), and SFN (0.5 mg/kg),

* BSE, like SFN, showed a significant up-regulation of the Nrf2 transcriptional activity involved in the enhancing antioxidant enzymes observed by the increased Nrf2 nuclear accumulation and gene expression.

* The increased levels of antioxidant enzymes exerted a strong effect on the prevention of cardiac oxidative damage and inflammation.

* Additionally, the BSE at high dose provided a similar effect as did SFN.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " BSE at high dose prevents DCM in a manner congruent with SFN treatment. Therefore, it suggests that BSE could potentially be used as a natural and safe treatment against DCM via Nrf2 activation".

Taken together, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#ManukaHoney in the Treatment of Severe Atopic Contact #Dermatitis Eczematous Reaction, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found an herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis, according to studies.
Atopic dermatitis or eczema is an inflammatory condition associated with red and itchy skin.

Most cases of atopic dermatitis are found in children. However, adults may also get it too. Skin irritation is found more often in children compared to adults.

The causes of atopic dermatitis are unknown. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as genetic preposition and abnormal function of the immune system and environment conditions may be involved in the development of the disease.

Epidemiological studies suggested that most patients with chronic atopic dermatitis also have asthma and hay fever, particularly in allergies.

Some researchers suggested that atopic dermatitis is more common in people who live in the air pollution city.

Dr. Ahn K in the study of the role of air pollutants in atopic dermatitis, wrote, " Both indoor and outdoor air pollution, which are of increasing concern with urbanization, are well-known environmental risk factors for asthma, whereas there is relatively little evidence in AD".

And, " epidemiologic and experimental data on the role of air pollution in patients with AD. Recent evidence suggests that a variety of air pollutants, such as environmental tobacco smoke, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, toluene, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, act as risk factors for the development or aggravation of AD. These air pollutants probably induce oxidative stress in the skin, leading to skin barrier dysfunction or immune dysregulation".

The results clearly suggested the risk of atopic dermatitis increases with air pollutants.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers in the course to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of dermatitis examined the Manuka honey anti-skin conditions and dermal injuries.

Injection of Manuka honey showed a significant potency in the treatment of a severe atopic contact dermatitis eczematous reaction with no side effects.

Furthermore, adult volunteers with bilateral atopic dermatitis (AD) were asked to apply MH on one site overnight for seven consecutive days and leave the contralateral site untreated as possible.

There are no significant changes in the skin staphylococci observed after day 7, irrespective of honey treatment.

However, MH treatment showed significant inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines in a dose-dependent manner.

The application of MK also inhibited mast cell degranulation against the onset of atopic dermatitis (AD).

Dr. Alangari AA, the lead scientist said in the final report, "MH is potentially effective in the treatment of AD lesions based on both clinical and cellular studies through different mechanisms".

Taken together, Manuka honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) with no side effects, pending the confirmation of  larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Polysaccharides Found in #Broccoli Exert Anti-Metastatic Activities by stimulatiing of NK and other Immune Cells, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ.
Most cases of invasive cancer can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Institute, between n 2011–2015, the number of new cases of cancer was 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases).

The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year.

In cancer cells, due to the alternation of DNA, can grow indefinitely.

Cancer cell metastasis is the process which cancer cells break away from the primary site and travel through the blood or fluid circulation and form new tumors (metastatic tumors) in other parts of the body, similar to those of primary cancer.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

Through the expression of the lines of defense, depending on the stage of pathogenic invasion, the innate immune response protects the body via a different set of interactions.

In the acute phase of infection, the macrophages in the immune system stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines at the site of the damage. The inflammatory cytokines not only play a critical role in stopping the stimuli from entering the body but also speed up wound healing through growth factors.

The innate immune system also can destroy damaged cells such as cancer cells through the T cell activation of B cells which in turn stimulates the production of a protein associated with the production of antibody p53.

Some researchers suggested immune system also can kill cancer cells by reacting to activating cytokines (IFN-α/β, IL-12, IL-15, IL-18, IL-21) produced by tumor cells or by other immune cells stimulated by tumor cells.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

In finding natural food for the prevention and treatment of cancer proliferation, researchers examined the anti-metastatic activities of polysaccharides in broccoli, including BCE-I mainly consisted of galactose and arabinose, whereas BCE-II mainly consisted of galacturonic acid and rhamnose, and BCE-III mainly consisted of rhamnose and galactose.

According to the results of the analysis,
* BCE-I showed the greatest enhancement of the pro-inflammatory proteins such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-12, and IL-6 secretion by stimulating murine peritoneal macrophages in the immune response.

* Furthermore, intravenous (i.v.) administration of BCE-I enhanced the lethal activity on YAC-1 tumor cells significantly and dose-dependently in ex vivo by exhibiting the natural killer (NK) cells.

* On lung metastasis of Colon26-M3.1 carcinoma cells, prophylactic i.v. and oral administration of BCE-I significantly and dose-dependently inhibited lung metastatic activity.

In other words, the inhibitory activity of BCE-1 on lung metastasis depends on the NK cell function in GM1 activity.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " BCE-I has potent antitumor metastatic activity, and that its anti-metastatic activity has relevance to the stimulation of NK and other immune cells".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for inhibiting cancer cell metastasis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
