#Phytochemical #Lycopene Suppresses the Function of Remodeling Actin Associated with Cancer Cell Mobility and Membrane Formation, Researchers Say.

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ.
Most cases of invasive cancer can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Institue, between n 2011–2015, the number of new cases of cancer was 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases).

The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year.

Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process without even notice, every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.

Sometimes, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cuts, injuries, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal rate again due to our body growth inhibitors. Unfortunately, skin cells sometimes overgrow while healing, leading to scars on the skin.

In cancer cells, due to the alternation of DNA, can grow indefinitely.

Cancer cell metastasis is the process by that cancer cells break away from the primary site and travel through the blood or fluid circulation and form new tumors (metastatic tumors) in other parts of the body, similar to those of primary cancer.

Dr. RUI-AN WANG, the lead scientist in the explanation of the reasons for cancer metastasis, wrote, "Over several years, scientists investigating cancer have focused their efforts on elucidating the mechanisms underlying cancer metastasis, with the aim of finding a way to inhibit this process".

And, "Cancer metastasizes due to several factors, namely attack by the immune system, lack of oxygen and necessary nutrients, large amounts of lactic acid produced by glycolysis and increased cell death. Therefore, the majority of the presently available treatments for cancer also bear the potential to induce metastasis".

In other words, for the tumor to survive that must metastasize.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the inhibition of cancer cell metastasis, researchers examined the apo-10'-lycopenoic acid (ALA), a derivative of lycopene through cleavage by carotene-9',10'-oxygenase, on tumor progression and metastasis in both liver and lung cancer animal models.

According to the tested assays, ALA showed significant activity in a dose-dependent manner in inhibiting migration and invasion of liver and lung cancer cells (HuH7 and A549).

In other words, ALA constrained lung cancer cells from the induction of mechanisms associated with cancer cell spreading.

Furthermore, in HuH7 and immortalized lung BEAS-2B cells, ALA suppresses the function of remodeling actin in stimulating cancer cell mobility and membrane formation.

More importantly, ALA also inhibited both HuH7 and A549 cells. proliferation and migration by suppressing the genes associated with angiogenesis.

Moreover, according to the tested assays, ALA also decreased the expression of enzyme which plays a pivotal role in cell migration during physiological and pathological processes.

In human THE-2 liver cells, ALA in a dose-dependently increased the mRNA expression and protein levels of peroxisome proliferator‑activated receptor‑γ (PPARγ) involved in controlling angiogenesis, tumor progression, and metastasis.

Based on the findings, Dr. Cheng J., the lead scientist wrote, "ALA inhibits cancer cell motility and angiogenesis and induces PPARγ expression, which could be one of the potential mechanisms for ALA protecting against tumor progression".

Taken together, phytochemical lycopene may be considered a supplement for the prevention of cancer cell metastasis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Turmeric Modulates the Immune Activity Against the Onset of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (#AIDS), Study Suggest

KyLe J. Norton

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection at the most advanced stage.
In other words, if an HIV-infected person has a CD4, the glycoprotein found on the surface of immune cells counts less than 200 cells/mm3, he/she is considered to have developed AIDS.

AIDS is caused by the infection of HIV. However, most HIV-infected patients are HIV carriers.

The most common risk factors associated with HIV infection are contact with body fluids such as infected blood, milk coming from a mother who carries the HIV, vaginal or anal sex, sharing drugs needles, and oral sex.

Believe it or not, HIV cannot live outside the human body for long because the virus needs body fluid to survive.

According to the statistics, approximately, 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV, including 15% of those who don't know they are infected. Only half of the patients half are virally suppressed.

In 2016, 39,782 cases of new HIV were diagnosed.

Some researcher's sexual behavior of a person may have a strong impact on increasing the risk of HIV injection. More precisely,

Dr. Molly S. Rosenberg, the lead scientist wrote, "HIV prevalence was very high among HAALSI participants (23%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 21 to 24), with no sex differences. Recent sexual activity was common (56%, 95% CI: 55 to 58) across all HIV status categories. Condom use was low among HIV-negative adults (15%, 95% CI: 14 to 17), higher among HIV-positive adults who were unaware of their HIV status (27%, 95% CI: 22 to 33), and dramatically higher among HIV-positive adults who were aware of their status (75%, 95% CI: 70 to 80). Casual sex and multiple partnerships were reported at moderate levels, with slightly higher estimates among HIV-positive compared to HIV-negative adults".

And, "Older HIV-positive adults in an HIV hyperendemic community of rural South Africa report sexual behaviors consistent with high HIV transmission risk. Older HIV-negative adults report sexual behaviors consistent with high HIV acquisition risk".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, researchers examined the immunomodulatory effects of Curcuma longa L., purple sweet potato, and mixtures of the two (CPM) in an animal model.

The study included selected C57BL/6 mice infected with LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus (MuLV), randomly divided into seven groups as follows:
* Normal control,

* Infected control (LP-BM5 MuLV infection),

* Positive control (LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of red ginseng 300 mg/kg body weight),

* The original powder of C. longa L. (C; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of C 189 mg/kg body weight),

* The original powder of purple sweet potato (P; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of P 1811 mg/kg body weight), CPM Low (CPL; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+CPM 2 g/kg body weight), and

* CPM High (CPH; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+CPM 5 g/kg body weight). Dietary supplementation lasted for 12 weeks.

According to the tested assays, dietary supplementation of CPM inhibited LP-BM5 MuLV-induced lymphadenopathy, an inflammatory disease of the lymph nodes, and splenomegaly, a condition of abnormal enlargement of the spleen.

Furthermore, CPM also enhances the immune function in recognizing invasive and foreign viruses, which may weaken the immune system to initiate the onset of infection.

In other words, CPM enhanced the immune function against the progression of MuLV.

More precisely, CPM reduced the decrease in T- and B cell proliferation reduced the population of CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cells, and inhibited the unbalanced production of T helper-1 (Th1)/T helper-2 (Th2) cytokines in LP-BM5 MuLV-infected mice.

Moreover, the immune function also was exhibited by the injection of CPM observed by the supplement immune-modulatory activity, including the inhibition of the reduction of phagocytosis in peritoneal macrophages and decreased serum levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin E (IgE), and immunoglobulin G (IgG).

Based on the results, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "CPM had a positive effect on immunomodulation in C57BL/6 mice induced by LP-BM5 leukemia retrovirus infection".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Ginger Protects Our Eyes Against Diabetic #Cataracts by Inhibiting Advanced Dlycation End Products (AGE), Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

A cataract is a condition with a decrease in vision, caused by the clouding of the lens in the eye found mostly in older adults. Eye injuries, inflammation, and some other eye diseases are also found to initiate the condition.

According to the statistics provided by the World Health Organization, 51% of world blindness, which represents about 20 million people (2010) worldwide are the result of a cataract. The condition can be reversed by surgery.

Aging cataracts can be classified into 3 primary types, including
* Nuclear sclerotic cataracts

It is the most common type of cataract in the elderly caused by the gradual clouding of the central portion of the lens.

* Cortical cataracts
It is a type of cloudiness that develops in the lens cortex outside the edge of the lens.

* Posterior subcapsular cataracts
It is a type of cataract that begins with a cloudy area on the back surface of the lens.

Epidemiological studies suggested that people who are smokers, have occupations associated with ultraviolet light exposure, diabetes mellitus, and are overweight are susceptible to a higher risk of the disease.

However, some researchers suggested that the widespread cataract in the aging population over the past few decades may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat diet.

Dr. Chung-Jung Chiu, the lead scientist said, "Two major dietary patterns were identified by principal component analysis and named Oriental and Western patterns. The Oriental pattern was characterized by a higher intake of vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains, tomatoes, and seafood. The Western pattern was characterized by higher intake of red meat, processed meat, high-fat dairy products, French fries, refined grains, and eggs".

And, "Our data indicate that consuming a Western dietary pattern is significantly associated with increased odds of early nuclear opacity".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of diabetic cataracts caused by advanced glycation end products (AGE) examined ginger anti-AGE activity.

The study included diabetes Wistar-NIN rats induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg body weight) and the control rats received vehicle alone.

In diabetic rats, a set of diabetic animals was given the AIN-93 diet, and another set was given either 0.5 or 3% ginger in their diet for a period of two months.

According to the tested assays, ginger not only delayed the onset but also the progression of cataracts in rats.

Ginger significantly inhibited the formation of various AGE products including carboxymethyl lysine in the eye lens.

Furthermore, the injection of ginger also inhibited the hyperglycemia-induced osmotic stress in the lens.

The results suggested ginger protects the eye against cataracts in rats through a number of mechanisms involved in the development of several pathophysiologies, including diabetic cataracts.

Dr. Saraswat M, the lead scientist wrote at the end of the study, "The results indicated that ginger was effective against the development of diabetic cataract in rats mainly through its antiglycation potential and to a lesser extent by inhibition of the polyol pathway".

Moreover, in the study of oxidative stress and aldose reductase-induced diabetic complications, researchers analyzed the protective effect against diabetic eye complications of purple waxy corn and ginger.

The study included streptozotocin-induced diabetics with blood glucose levels >250 mg·dL(-1) orally given the extract at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg·BW(-1) for 10 weeks.
All doses of PWCG showed significant inhibition of decreased lens opacity, the levels of oxidative stress Malondialdehyde (MDA), and anti-reflective coating (AR) in the lens of diabetic rats.

PWCG also improved the antioxidant profile in the treated rats.

Most importantly, the anti-retinopathy property of the combined extract was also confirmed by the increased number of neurons in the ganglion cell layer and the thickness of the total retina and retinal nuclear layer in diabetic rats.

Dr. Thiraphatthanavong P, the lead researcher said, "PWCG is the potential functional food to protect against diabetic cataracts and retinopathy. However, further studies concerning toxicity and clinical trials are still essential".

Taken together, ginger processed with a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention and treatment of cataracts, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Piperine inhibits Proteins Associated with the Apoptosis of #BreastCancer Cells, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Piperine may be the new source of phytochemicals used for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, some studies suggested.
Breast cancer is a medical condition caused by the alternation of DNA of cells in the breast tissue.

According to the statistic, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Most cases of breast cancer start with cell growth on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue. However, at the later stage, malignant cells can infect other healthy cells and tissue far away from the breast through fluids and blood circulation.

The exact causes of breast cancer are unknown. However, the genetic prepositions that link to breast cancer onset have been under intensive study over the last few decades.

Women who inherited the mutated gene BRCA 1 and 2 are associated with over 60% of breast cancer risk compared to women who do not.
Another risk factor associated with breast cancer risk has been mentioned in the scientific community
are a diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables.

Dr. Stoll BA in the Oncology Department, St. Thomas' Hospital, in the study "Breast cancer and the western diet, the role of fatty acids and antioxidant vitamins" said, "An increased ratio of n-3 to n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the diet inhibits the growth of the rat mammary cancer model" and " There is also evidence that members of then-3 PUFA series can inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells both in vitro and in explants".

" Clinical trials of supplementary n-3 PUFAs in conjunction with a reduced fat intake have been proposed for breast cancer prevention".

These results suggested women who reduce the intake of saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food and replace them with foods that contain a high amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables are at a reduced risk of breast cancer.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

Dr. Do MT and colleagues in the cancer programs at the Chungnam National University, in the finding a natural compound for the treatment of genetic mutation that causes breast cancer, launched an investigation to examine the effect of Piperine, a bioactive component of black pepper, Piper nigrum Linn, molecular mechanisms by which piperine exerts antitumor effects in HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells.

In HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells, piperine strongly inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis through caspase-3 activation and PARP cleavage, the proteins with the function to program cell death.
Piperine also inhibited HER2 gene expression in the promotion of cancer cell proliferation by blockading ERK1/2 signaling. Piperine significantly reduced levels of SREBP-1 and FAS expression which is associated with promoting cancer growth and survival.

Further analysis suggested that piperine suppressed the growth of tumors by stimulating the protein in the induction of cell apoptosis and inhibiting the protein in the promotion of cell proliferation and survival.

Dr.Do MT in the final report of the study said, "Piperine may be a potential agent for the prevention and treatment of human breast cancer with HER2 overexpression".

Moreover, in the study of piperine on the tumor growth and metastasis of mouse 4T1 mammary carcinoma in vitro and in vivo, researchers showed that the application of Piperine (35-280 μmol/L) inhibits the growth of 4T1 cells in time- and dose-dependent manners (the IC(50) values were 105 ± 1.08 and 78.52 ± 1.06 μmol/L, respectively, at 48 and 72 h).

Piperine (70-280 μmol/L) dose-dependently induced apoptosis of 4T1 cells through the proteins that program cell death.

Piperine (140 and 280 μmol/L) significantly increased the percentage of cells in the G(2)/M phase before inducing apoptosis with a reduction in the expression of cyclin B1 in facilitating cell proliferation.

Additionally, Piperine (140 and 280 μmol/L) significantly decreased the expression of MMP-9 and MMP-13 in promoting the cancer cell division and survival and inhibited 4T1 cell migration in vitro.

At the final phase of the experiment, researchers also discovered that injection of piperine (2.5 and 5 mg/kg) dose-dependently suppressed the primary 4T1 tumor growth and injection of piperine (5 mg/kg) significantly inhibited the lung metastasis.

Taken together, piperine, a major pungent alkaloid present in the pepper family may be considered a functional phytochemical for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer, depending on large sample size and multicenter human study

#Herbal #ChasteTreeBerry Induces Oxidation and Apoptosis in Cancer Cells, Reserachers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Chaste tree berry is found to exhibit significant anti-cancer activity, a recent study by a renowned study advised.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cells growing and multiplying in disordered and uncontrollable ways in our bodies. In the late stage, the cancer cell may travel away from the originated site
to infect other tissues and organs.

According to the Tianjin Institute for Biomedicinal Research, in the evaluated the apoptosis-inducing effect of chaste tree berry, using observation under a light microscope, flow cytometric analysis, and agarose gel electrophoresis, vitexicarpin, a flavonoid found in chaste tree berry significantly inhibited proliferation of human cancer cells lines A2780(human ovarian carcinoma), HCT-15(human, colon, colorectal adenocarcinoma), HT-1080(fibrosarcoma cell line) and K562(Human chronic myeloid leukemia cells), depending to the concentration.

Dr. Wang HY the lead researcher in the study said, "Vitexicarpin induces apoptosis.... via mitochondria(in regulated cell metabolism)-controlled apoptotic pathway".

In support of the above analysis, the crude extract prepared with ethanol from dried ripened Vitex agnus-castus fruits exerted strong cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines of human uterine cervical canal fibroblast (HCF), human embryo fibroblast (HE-21), ovarian cancer (MCF-7), cervical carcinoma (SKG-3a), breast carcinoma (SKOV-3), gastric signet ring carcinoma (KATO-III), colon carcinoma (COLO 201), and small cell lung carcinoma (Lu-134-A-H) cells.

The inhibition of the extract is attributed to the effect on cell death through apoptosis and increased intracellular oxidation in the tumor cells.

Other researchers suggested that the cytotoxic effects. of Chaste tree, berry may be involved in various aspects, including the JNK (apoptosis) pathway. as indicated in the new native lignan VB6 study.

Taking together, there is no doubt, that chaste tree berries may be considered a valuable chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of various types of cancer, depending on further evaluation.

#Greentea and GABA #Greentea (GGT) Reduce Symptoms and Risk of Depression, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea is found to have a psychological effect on patients with depression, a renowned institute study suggested.

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a loved one, or an illness, affecting the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself. Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate.

Green tea, a precious drink processes the number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

In a cross-sectional study of the consumption of green tea and coffee ascertained with a validated dietary questionnaire and the amount of caffeine intake estimated from these beverages, green tea consumption is associated with reduced symptoms of depression, depending on the amount of intake.

In comparison to the amount intake of participants, the study also found that participants who consumed ≥4 cups of green tea/d had a 51% significantly lower prevalence odds of having depressive symptoms than those who consumed less than 1 cup/d.

Dr. Pham NM, the lead author in the study said, "Higher consumption of green tea, coffee, and caffeine may confer protection against depression".

In vivo, green tea(GT) and GABA green tea (GGT) also expressed a protective activity against post-stroke depression (PSD), a common consequence of stroke, according to a joint study led by Pavia University.

In a mouse model of post-stroke depression, GGT and GT enhance the activity in the modulation of depressive symptoms through decreased oxidative stress, and increased antioxidant endogenous defenses, including polyphenol, theanine, glutamine, etc......

Furthermore, in the review of Embase, PubMed, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases from their inception through August 2014, tea consumption of more than 3 cups a day showed a significant decrease in the risk of depression of 37% (RR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.55-0.71), in compared to individuals with lower tea consumption and those with higher tea consumption.

Taken together, there is no doubt, that green tea may be used as a functional food in reduced symptoms and risk of depression if consumed daily. However, oral administration of large amounts daily should be taken with care, particularly for people with yin constituents.

#Coffee Lowers the Risk of #Gout, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Good News for coffee lovers, coffee consumed daily is associated with reduced risk and treatment of chronic and recurrent gout. a renowned institute proposed.

Gout mostly affects one joint, is an acute and recurrent condition of arthritis as a result of uric acid building up in the blood, inducing joint inflammation.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the joint study led by Central South University, in the review literature of PubMed and EMBASE databases, up to April 2015, out of a total of 11 observational studies (6 cross-sectional, 3 cohort, and 2 case-control studies), coffee consumption showed a significant inverse association with incidence of gout.

The study also found that the efficacy of coffee consumption in reducing the risk of gout showed no significant difference between the highest and the lowest coffee intake in terms of serum uric acid (SUA) level.

Additionally, in the total of 45,869 men with no history of gout at baseline with an intake of coffee, decaffeinated coffee, tea, and total caffeine evaluated in every 4 years, participants in returned questionnaires indicated that increasing coffee intake was (1-3, 4-5, and > or = 6 cups per day) inversely associated with the risk of gout depending to numbers of cups consumed daily.

The related risk of gout incidence in coffee drinkers is as low as .41 in comparison to noncoffee-consumed participants.

Most importantly, the total caffeine levels from all sources, including coffee and tea intake showed no associated risk of gout.

Other researchers, in the finding of gout developed, suggested that coffee intake of 4 to 5 and >/=6 cups daily lower risk of gout compared to no intake (0.26 mg/dl and 0.43 mg/dl respectively) and total caffeine from coffee and other beverages and tea intake were not associated with serum uric acid levels.

Also, according to the data from 14,758 participants ages >/=20 years in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994), coffee consumption is associated with ameliorated serum uric acid level and hyperuricemia frequency.

Taken together, coffee consumption is associated with attenuated risk and treatment of gout caused by elevated serum uric acid levels, depending on the number of cups taken daily.
