#Cinnamon Supplementation Is Associated with Glycemic Control in Diabetes and its Complications, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of cinnamon is found to improve fasting glucose, glucose tolerance, and insulin sensitivity in women with insulin resistance associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, used in herbal and traditional medicine as an anti-fungal and bacterial level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Cinnamaldehyde, in the animal study found in the husk of Cicer arietinum L. Monosaccharide, exhibited antioxidant effects in reduced 29% of free radical expression and glucolipid levels through its action on multiple signaling pathways including cell cycle arrest and anti-pro-inflammatory properties.

In vivo and in vitro, administered orally cinnamic acid and cinnamaldehyde lower acute blood glucose and improve glucose tolerance, through stimulating insulin secretion in isolated islets, according to the joint study led by the University of Karachi.

In a 16-week double-blind randomized control trial of 116 individuals with metabolic syndrome, dietary intervention groups with the administration of cinnamon [6 capsules (3 g) daily], significantly improved all components of metabolic syndrome in a sample of Asian Indians in north India.

Dr. Gupta Jain S lead author of the researchers said,"Significantly greater decrease [difference between means, (95% CI)] in fasting blood glucose (mmol/L) [0.3 (0.2, 0.5) p = 0.001], glycosylated hemoglobin (mmol/mol) [2.6 (0.4, 4.9) p = 0.023], waist circumference (cm) [4.8 (1.9, 7.7) p = 0.002] and body mass index (kg/m2 ) [1.3 (0.9, 1.5) p = 0.001] was observed in the cinnamon group compared to placebo group".

Other researchers in the study of cinnamon's (Cinnamomum cassia) anti-diabetic properties on obese patients also suggested, that its effectiveness in increasing the lipid storage capacity of white adipocytes and increasing the fatty acid oxidation capacity may be due to activities of some other components of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) in the prevention of obesity-induced type II diabetes

Although cinnamon (Cinnamomum sp) has been shown to express good glycemic control to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the intake of cinnamon supplements and whole herb should only be given by the qualified herbal doctor to achieve a greater health effect without side effects.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, cinnamon is a very hot herb, and overdoses may induce toxicity.

#Lyophilized Bilberries or Blueberries Enhance Locomotion In Patients with Neurodegenerative Disease, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Locomotion is the ability to move from one place to the other. In humans, locomotion controlled by the cerebellum is a complex process that requires the integration of central and peripheral nervous signaling coordinated by the muscles.
In other words, every time you move any part of the body, the cerebellum fires into action.

Damage to the cerebellum of the brain has been found to induce difficulty with balance, coordination, and fine motor skills in patients.

Besides neurodegenerative diseases, alcohol abuse, certain medications, stroke, tumors, cerebral palsy, brain degeneration, and multiple sclerosis are the most common risk factors that can affect brain locomotion control.

In conventional medicine, depending on the causes that affect the locomotion, adaptive devices may be introduced to maintain independence. Other therapies such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy with moderate exercise have been found to be helpful.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the improvement of locomotion in patients with neurodegenerative disease, researchers examined the possible effects of prolonged administration of lyophilized Vaccinium berries (blueberry, bilberry) on cognitive performance against the incidence of degenerative disorders.

Mice selected for the study were observed by step-down inhibitory avoidance, open field, elevated plus-maze, and radial maze tasks. The lyophilized berries were administered for 30 days before the first training.

According to the tested assays, lyophilized berries significantly enhanced locomotion by increasing the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.

Additionally, short-term treatment with lyophilized berries also improves rat performance on the elevated plus-maze task.

In other words, lyophilized berries inhibited the neuro deficits associated with inactivity behavior such as anxiety.

Taken together, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the improvement of locomotion in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Inhibits Brain Cell Stress Associated with the Risk of β-Amyloid Aggregation, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Amyloid beta (Aβ or Abeta) is the main component of the amyloid plaques that cause the gradual death of neurons, leading to the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia or neurodegenerative disease found in the elderly.

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

According to the statistics, the disease is most prevalent in the elderly. Approximately 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's. 15.9 million family caregivers provide an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion to people with dementia worldwide.

Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the neurons of the brain over time. However, less than 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic predisposition. Patients with such mutated genes on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1 are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.

More precisely, Alzheimer's disease is caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia.

Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of mental disorders, researchers examined the effect of cranberry supplementation on β-amyloid aggregation.

According to tested analysis, the cranberry protected the neurons by mediating Aβ toxicity alleviation required heat shock transcription factor (HSF)-1 rather than DAF-16, and was associated with cellular stress.

In other words, cranberry supplementation reduced Aβ toxicity-induced brain cell stress by reducing the transactivity of HSF-1 in an IIS-dependent manner.

More precisely, HSF-1 plays a pivotal role in maintaining proteostasis, a process that regulates proteins within the cell in order to maintain the neuron cellular health involved in oxidative stress.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "(cranberry) elucidated the mechanism whereby cranberry attenuated Aβ toxicity in C elegans and stressed the significance of proteostasis in the prevention of age-related diseases from a practical point of view.".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of AD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Enzyme #Supplement Inhibits Symptoms and Improves Quality of Life in Children with Cystic Fibrosis, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic preposition that leads to diseases mostly in the lungs in children and young adults.
Most cases of CF have been found to cause persistent infection in the lungs, leading to the destruction of lung tissues and reduced lung function, depending on the severity of the condition.

The most common complication of CF is difficulty digesting fats, proteins, and nutrient absorption, progressive lung damage caused by ongoing infections chronic low-grade inflammation, and CF-related diabetes.

According to statistics provided by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, approximately 1 in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF.

In age perspective,
* 60% of patients are diagnosed in the first year of life, and 90% by 10 years of age.

* More than 47% of all Canadians with CF are over the age of 18 years.

* As of 2002, the median age of survival of Canadians with CF is 37 years of age.

The most common symptoms of CF are persistent cough with productive thick mucous, wheezing and shortness of breath, frequent chest infections, weight loss or failure to gain weight, infertility in men, and decreased fertility in women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for CF. Medications are focusing on reducing symptoms and improving quality of life, including
* Antibiotics for the treatment of lung infections.

* Anti-inflammatory medications to protect the lung airways.

* Medication to reduce cough up the mucus

* Inhaled medications to keep your airways open by relaxing the muscles around your bronchial tubes

* Medication to help the digestive tract in absorbing nutrients

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, researchers compared identical capsules half-filled with mini-tablets of a new high lipase preparation in a randomized double-blind crossover study in children with cystic fibrosis.

All children who participated in the study received his/her usual number of capsules and the same dose of lipase during each period of the study.

According to the results from the 18 children who completed the study, the pancreatic enzyme applied in the high lipase preparation showed fewer gastrointestinal symptoms compared to the low lipase group.

Compared to the baseline, the pancreatic enzyme group showed a significant improvement in fat absorption and a reduction in fecal fat output.

Fecal energy loss was also improved in the treatment group.

Based on the findings, researchers at the St James's Hospital wrote, " (The) half-filled capsules of the new high lipase preparation are more effective than the standard preparation and it is likely that filled capsules would allow patients to use fewer than half the number of pancreatic enzyme capsules".

Taken together, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of symptoms of cystic fibrosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Capsicum Frutescens (#Cayenne)Inhibit Symptoms and Improve Quality of Life of Unspecific #LowBackPain, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Low back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) of degenerative disc disease, with pain persisting for longer than 3 months, affecting over 80% of the population in the US alone at some point in their life.
Chronic LBP prevalence in older adults was significantly higher than the 21-to-44-year age group and inflicted more disabled, longer symptom duration, etc.(2). The unique impact of CLBP is unknown(3).

Acute lower back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) caused by injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints, or discs that last less than a few months.

Chronic lower back pain that lasts longer than 6 months, is normally caused by damage to nerves in the lower back which supplies sensation and power to the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.

According to the statistics, up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives. The condition affects people of all ages, particularly in occupations requiring the use of muscles of the lower back.

Worldwide, years lived with a disability caused by low back pain have increased by 54% between 1990 and 2015.

Depending on the severity of the condition, chronic lower back pain can induce symptoms of numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and intense, constant pain that gets worse at night.

Some people with chronic lower back pain may also experience symptoms of loss of bowel or bladder control and unexplained weight loss.

According to the statistics, the lifetime prevalence of non-specific (common) low back pain is estimated at 60% to 70% in industrialized countries with a one-year prevalent rate ranging from 15% to 45%. The adult incidence of lower back pain is 5% per year.

Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relieve pain and swelling, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with neuro and muscle pain, researchers examined the effectiveness of herbal medicine, including comfrey for nonspecific low back pain (LBP).

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involved in the searching of studies published on numerous electronic databases up to September 2014 found 14 RCTs with 2050 participants/

Capsicum frutescens (cayenne) reduces pain more than placebo.

Although Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw), Salix alba (white willow bark), Symphytum officinale L. (comfrey), Solidago chilensis (Brazilian arnica), and Lavender essential oil also seem to reduce pain more than placebo, evidence for these substances was of moderate quality at best.

All tested herbal medicines showed no significant adverse events within the included trials.
Taken altogether, Comfrey and other herbal medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of unspecific low back pain, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthy Food #Broccoli's #Sulforaphane (SFN) Inhibits #DiabeticCardiomyopathy by Decreasing Cardiac Lipid Accumulation in Diabetes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.
In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Diabetic complications are any diseases associated with hyperglycemia if the blood glucose is not managed properly. Patients with diabetes may experience a number of complications including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and foot ulcers.

Cardiomyopathy is a disease associated with heart muscle, leading to reduced functions of the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication found in patients with diabetes associated with reducing the heart function in circulating blood through the body, leading to heart failure and increased accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is classified into different types, depending on the damage that has been affected, including
* Microangiopathy is a disorder that affects small blood vessels, leading to impaired myocardial blood flow reserve.

* Autonomic neuropathy is a disorder that affects the nerves that manage everyday body functions, leading to abnormal blood pressure, heart rate.

* Endothelial dysfunction is a disorder associated with the damage of vascular endothelium. The condition is considered an early event of cardiovascular disease.

The most common causes of diabetic cardiomyopathy are myocardial dysfunction in the absence of overt clinical coronary artery disease, valvular disease, and other conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane (SFN) on T2DM-induced cardiac lipid accumulation and subsequent cardiomyopathy.

The study included male C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet for 3months to induce insulin resistance, followed by treatment with 100mg/kg body-weight streptozotocin to induce hyperglycemia as the T2DM mouse model compared to age-matched mice fed a normal diet as control.

According to the tested analysis,
* SFN treatment significantly attenuated cardiac remodeling and dysfunction induced by T2DM.

* SFN treatment also significantly inhibited cardiac lipid accumulation, measured by Oil Red O staining, and improved cardiac inflammation oxidative stress and fibrosis, shown by down-regulating diabetes-induced PAI-1, TNF-α, CTGF, TGF-β, 3-NT, and 4-HNE expression involved in oxidation.

* SFN upregulated the expression of the gene associated with the promotion of antioxidant enzyme and decreased the expression in enhancing the initiation of oxidative stress.

* SFN also reversed diabetes-induced inhibition of LKB1/AMPK and its downstream targets associated with the regulation of lipid, cholesterol and glucose metabolism.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " SFN treatment to T2DM mice may attenuate the cardiac oxidative stress-induced inhibition of LKB1/AMPK signaling pathway, thereby preventing T2DM-induced lipotoxicity and cardiomyopathy".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#CruciferousVegetables Reduce the Risk of #ColonCancer by Decreasing Aberrant Crypt Foci (ACF), Cialomucin-Producing Foci, or Mucin-Depleted Foci (MDF) Numbers

Kyle J. Norton

The colon forms part of the digestive system including a large intestine that connects to the small intestines and the rectum plays a critical role in reabsorbing fluids processing waste products from the body and preparing for their elimination through the rectum.

Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progresses cancer in a predictable way. The disease is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Most cases of primary colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At the early stage. most patients with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, the tumor not only can spread to other healthy tissue and organs a distance away through blood and fluid circulation but also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells.

The progression of colon cancer at this stage not only induces symptoms of the change in bowel habits, the change in the consistency of your stool, that lasts longer than four weeks but also causes rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal severe pain.

According to the statistics by the American Cancer Society, in the US, there are
97,220 new cases of colon cancer were diagnosed in 2018. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. About 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of the disease. However, they do know a history of polyps, ethnicity, a high-fat diet, and low fiber, an increase in age, and the long-term infection of colon diseases are some of the prevalent factors associated with the onset and progression of colon cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the effects of diets containing cruciferous vegetables on colon cancer risk.

According to the experiments of* Expt. 1, with rats that were fed a vegetable-free (basal) diet or diets containing different lyophilized cruciferous vegetables in concentrations between 4 and 10%.

* Expt. 2, rats that were fed the basal diet or diets containing 10-22.6% fresh cruciferous vegetables. Diets were fed for 2 wk (Expt. 1) or 3 wk (Expt. 2) before and 7 wk (Expt. 1) or 12 wk (Expt. 2) after administration of the colon carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine.

Moreover, rats fed fresh vegetables were also injected with a low dose of carcinogen 18-24 h prior to termination.

According to the dietary information,
* Groups fed lyophilized vegetables did not differ in aberrant crypt foci (ACF), sialomucin-producing foci, or mucin-depleted foci (MDF) numbers.

Furthermore, all fresh vegetable diets significantly decreased ACF (approximately 40%) and MDF numbers, and the activities of the hepatic phase I enzyme CYP2E1 involved in drugs and alcohol metabolism did not differ among groups in either experiment.

Additionally, the levels of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST) and quinone reductase activities associated with detoxification did not differ among groups fed fresh vegetables, whereas the lyophilized cabbage diets decreased GST activity, compared with the basal diet.

Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for reducing the risk of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
