Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, that affects the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think, and act.
Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief, or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome.
The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, and loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.
Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering, and thoughts of harming themselves.
Readers may find other symptoms not included in the article including behavior and physical symptoms.
Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.
According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression of Association of Americans, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.
The mild case of depression can be defeated by a variety of self-care techniques. Others require the treatment of medication, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy that help to reduce and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, scientists examined the effects of Xiaoyaosan (XYS), a famous and classic traditional Chinese prescription for depressive disorders.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
In a total of 17 depressed patients and the 17 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects as the primary cohort, depressed patients were screened according to the Chinese Classification of Mental Disorder (CCMD-3) and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD).
According to the results of experience,* There were significant differences between the depression cohort and healthy volunteers, and between patients before and after the treatment of XYS.
* Furthermore, XYS enhanced the levels of oxalic and stearic acids that significantly increased in depressed patients' plasma while valine and urea significantly decreased, as compared with healthy controls.
* XYS reversed these metabolite changes in terms of regulating dysfunctions in glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, and arginine and proline metabolism.
Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered a remedy to treat depression, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Coffee Intake Regualrly Is Associated with A Reduced Risk of Stroke, Particularly in Women
Kyle J. Norton
Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
A stroke is a medical condition characterized by interrupted blood supply, thus reducing oxygen and nutrients delivery to the brain, resulting in the death of brain cells.
Intake of coffee and coffee caffeine may have a profound effect in reducing the risk of stroke incidence, a renowned institute study suggested.
In a third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994; NHANES III) data to examine coffee consumption and stroke with participants aged ≥17 years old, researchers found that
coffee intake of this population showed a significant inverse association with stroke risk incidence, regardless of smoking status.
Interestingly, the study also discovered that frequent coffee drinkers displayed a lower occurrence of heart failure, diabetes, and hypertension but the risk of high cholesterol for those consuming ≥3 cups per day.
Dr. Liebeskind DS, the lead author said, "Heavier daily coffee consumption is associated with decreased stroke prevalence" and ". Multivariate analyses revealed an independent effect of heavier coffee consumption (≥3 cups/day) on reduced stroke".
Furthermore, in an analyzed data from a prospective cohort of 83,076 women in the Nurses' Health Study without a history of stroke, coronary heart disease, diabetes, or cancer at baseline, with coffee consumption assessed first in 1980, then repeatedly every 2 to 4 years, and follow-up through 2004, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health filed the following results
1. The relative risk ratio of stroke in participants coffee consumption (<1 cup per month, 1 per month to 4 per week, 5 to 7 per week, 2 to 3 per day, and >or=4 per day) were 1, 0.98, 0.88, 0.81, and 0.80 repetitively.
2. Intake of coffee and coffee caffeine daily and regularly showed a significantly positive effect in reduced stroke risk after taking into account other favors, including high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, and type 2 diabetes.
3. Risk of stroke is also associated stronger correlation among never and past smokers (RR for >or=4 cups a day versus <1 cup a month, 0.57) than among current smokers (RR for >or=4 cups a day versus <1 cup a month, 0.97).
4. Decaffeinated coffee intake also was associated with a trend in a lower risk of stroke after adjustment for caffeinated coffee consumption.
5. Caffeine consumption of other beverages is not associated with risk or reduced risk of stroke.
The findings suggested that long-term coffee consumption was not associated with the risk of stroke but modestly reduced the risk of stroke.
Promisingly, an Asian study of data obtained from the Health Examinees (HEXA) study, involving 146,830 individuals aged 40-69 years demonstrated that high coffee consumption was associated with a 38% lower odds ratio for stroke in women compared to (none drinkers vs. ≥ 3 cups/day drinkers in women but not in men.
The expression of coffee intake in reduced risk of stroke was also found greater in women who are healthy, younger, non-obese, non-hypertensive, non-diabetic, non-smokers, and non-alcohol drinkers.
Taken together, there is no doubt that the intake of coffee daily and regularly has a remarkable effect on the reduced risk of stroke, particularly in women.

#GreenTea EGCG Promotes #WeightLoss and Attenuates Symptoms of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Green tea may be considered as a functional food in lower risk and treatment for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a respectable institute opinionated.
Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is a condition caused by over accumulated of fat in the liver.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will solve the aversion.
According to the University of Connecticut, Storrs, the efficacy of green tea for the treatment of obese patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with polyphenolic catechins in the induction of hypolipidemic, thermogenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.
These chemical compounds have also been found to mitigate the occurrence and progression of NAFLD.
Dr. Masterjohn C, the lead author said, "(The phytochemical compounds) demonstrating the hepatoprotective properties of green tea and its catechins and the proposed mechanisms by which these targeted dietary agents protect against NAFLD"
Furthermore, in mice fed on a high-fat diet for 24 weeks., then injected with EGCG (10, 20 and 40 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1), ip), for 4 weeks, researchers found that treated mice showed a significant improvement of a high-fat diet in induced the body weight, grade 2 or 3 liver fatty degeneration (steatosis, lobular inflammation, and ballooning), severe hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance.
The phytochemical EGCG, in dose-dependent, also enhanced insulin clearance and upregulated IDE protein expression and enzyme activity in regulated levels of glucose in the liver of treated mice.
In fact, EGCG not only promoted weight loss but also attenuated symptoms of mice with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Promisingly, in the study of green tea polyphenols (GTP) on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Zucker fatty (ZF) rats, researchers also indicated that GTP intervention not only decreased weight gain and significantly lowered visceral fat but also reduced fasting serum insulin, glucose and lipids levels, through ameliorated expression of hepatic TG accumulation and cytoplasmic lipid droplet as well as diminished hepatic lipogenesis and triglycerides outflux from liver.
Taken together, green tea has expressed a significant enhancement in reduced risk and treatment of
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, through many aspects. However large amounts of intake regularly should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

Intake of Vegetables, Fruits, Fish, and Tea Regularly Is Associated with a Reduced Risk of Anxiety Symptoms in Pregnancy, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
The central nervous system is a part of the nervous system of the brain and spinal cord with the function of integrating information it receives from the entire nervous system and controlling all the workings of your body.
Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorders. Anything that involves structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves, including brain damage is considered as neuro disease.
Mental illnesses or mental health disorders refer to a group of mental health conditions that affect your mood, thinking, quality of life, and behavior.
Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, overuse of alcohol, lack of physical activity inadequate relief of chronic stress, and poor diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods, and less in fruits and vegetables and whole-grain are some of the key contributors in the development and progression of chronic diseases, including neurological diseases.
Anxiety is a mental disorder characterized by worry about future events and fear of current events.
People experience anxiety differently. Some people feel a sudden moment of anxiety just a bad feeling, it comes and goes, only lasting a short time. Depending on how people cope with the moments of anxiety, the events can be brief or last a few days.
However, in some persons, if anxiety does not go away, they may require treatment from the related field specialists.
If you frequently experience symptoms of nervousness, restlessness, or being tense feelings of danger, panic, or dread rapid heart rate rapid breathing, or hyperventilation,..... you may have developed an anxiety disorder.
Conventionally, Treatment of anxiety is totally depending on the nature of the anxiety disorder and individual preferences. Often, treatment combines different types of therapy and medication.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders, scientists examined prepregnancy dietary patterns and prospective variations on anxiety symptoms from mid-pregnancy to early postpartum in Brazilian Women.
A prospective cohort study included 207 healthy pregnant women who were followed at 5 to 13, 20 to 26, and 30 to 36 gestational weeks, and once at 30 to 45 days postpartum.
According to the analysis of The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory returned from the participants
* The mean anxiety symptom scores were 40.4, 40.5, and 37.2 for the second trimester, third trimester, and postpartum, respectively.
* The rate of variation of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory score was 0.535 (95% CI -0.035 to 1.107; P=0.066) and -0.010 (95% CI -0.018 to -0.002; P=0.019) when accounting for gestational age and quadratic gestational age, respectively.
* The dietary pattern associated with the anxiety symptoms found in the common-Brazilian pattern, comprised mainly of rice and beans (β=-1.200, 95% CI -2.220 to -0.181; P=0.021)
* The healthy pattern comprised mostly of vegetables, fruits, fish, and tea was found to be associated with negative prospective changes in anxiety symptoms.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "High adherence to the common-Brazilian or healthy patterns was negatively associated with higher anxiety symptom scores from mid-pregnancy to early postpartum in this group of Brazilian women".
In other words, regular intake of vegetables, fruits, fish, and tea in women during pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of anxiety.

#Healthy Veggie #Broccoli Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of #Hyperlipidemia, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.
In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalence ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.
Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.
The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Cholesterol can either be produced by the liver or consumed from food sources. There are 2 types of cholesterol
*The high-density lipoprotein also known as "good" cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.
* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in a moderate amount.
In a healthy individual, the bad cholesterol is returned to the liver.
People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances forms plaque, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the body.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
On finding a potential plant that processes anti-anti-hyperlipidemia, researchers examined the serum LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering effects of two types of canned beverages containing mixed green vegetables and fruits, with or without broccoli and cabbage (B&C).
The randomized double-blind study design included 77 adult subjects with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia (Forty-nine out of 77 subjects, whose LDL-C levels were greater than or equal to 140 mg/dl and less than 180 mg/dl) were randomly divided into groups either by a placebo sample made from the same materials but without B&C. The subjects were administered 2 cans of 160 g contents/can) per day for 12 weeks.
According to the results of the experiment,
* Serum LDL-C levels in the test group were significantly reduced at 3, 6, and 9 weeks after administration in comparison to the baseline levels (155.7 mg/dl on average).
* The average LDL-C value at 9 weeks was 142.5 mg/dl and the reduction rate was 8.5% compared to serum LDL-C levels in the control group that was not significantly reduced.
* Significant differences(p < 0.05) between the groups were observed in the LDL-C levels at 6 and 9 weeks and also in the total cholesterol levels at 9 weeks.
Collectively, researchers said, "Intake of the beverage tested containing B&C is useful for lowering serum LDL-C levels in hypercholesterolemic subjects".
Taken altogether, broccoli used combination with cabbage may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#TualangHoney Inhibits #CervicalCancer Through Its Cytotoxic and Apoptotic Activity, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have located a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer with no side effects, some studies found.
Cervical cancer is a chronic condition caused by cell growth in the tissue of the cervix.
Most cases of cervical cancer start on the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the cervix.
Most patients at this stage of cervical cancer do not experience any symptoms.
As cancer progresses, most patients may experience the symptoms of blood spots or light bleeding between or following periods, longer than usual and heavy menstrual bleeding, increased vaginal discharge, particularly, bleeding after intercourse, and douching.
At this stage, cervical cancer can travel a distance away to cause metastasis to other healthy tissues and organs through fluids and blood circulation.
If you have experienced some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the cervical cancer possibility.
Although certain risk factors such as having many sexual partners, long-term use of birth control pills (oral contraceptives), and early engagement in sexual contact are associated with the onset of the disease, Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of major cause that has been under intensive investigation.
Believe it or not, there are over 100 different HPV types have been identified and classified as high-risk in almost all cervical cancers (>99.7%).
Out of this 100 different HPV, HPV16 is the most prevalent type in both low-grade disease and cervical neoplasia.
Dr. Doorbar J at the National Institute for Medical Research, said, "Most cervical cancers arise within the cervical transformation zone at the squamous/columnar junction, and it has been suggested that this is a site where productive infection may be inefficiently supported"
"Cancers usually arise in individuals who fail to resolve their infection and who retain oncogene expression for years or decades. In most individuals, immune regression eventually leads to clearance of the virus, or to its maintenance in a latent or asymptomatic state in the basal cells".
These results clearly state, that most of the initiation of HPV infection is stopped by the immune system's first line of defense before the virus penetrates through the cervical cell membrane on the surface of the inner lining.
In other words, women who have a weakened immune system are at substantial risk of the disease.
Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.
In finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, researchers examined the Tualang honey (Agromas) anti-cancer effect.
Tualang honey (Agromas) (TH) were applied with increasing doses of TH (1-10%) for up to 72 h to the human breast (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and cervical (HeLa) cancer cell lines; as well as in the normal breast epithelial cell line, MCF-10A.
At concentrations (EC(50)) of 2.4-2.8%., Tualang honey increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage from the cancer cell membranes, an indication of cytotoxicity to all three cancer cells.
Furthermore, the application of TH also reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψ(m)) in response to energy storage in the cancer cell lines after 24h of treatment.
TH also stimulated the proteins associated with cancer cells apoptosis.
The evidence suggested that TH has significant anticancer activity against human cervical cancer cell lines.
Additionally, in the evaluation of bee bread (BB), a fermented mixture of plant pollen, honey, and bee saliva against the HeLa (cervical carcinoma) cancer cells line, researchers found that the application of BB displays moderate activity in the inhibition of the cancer cell line through cytotoxicity with doses ranging from >400 to 68 µg/mL).
The inhibition of the human cervical cancer cell line was attributed to the main phenolic compounds also found abundantly in the Tualang honey.
The in-depth analysis suggested that BB induces HeLa cell death by stimulating the function of free radicals in the induction of oxidative stress to cause cytotoxicity.
Taken together, honey or Tualang honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of cervical cancer.

Intake of #Coffee and #Coffee Caffeine Regularly Reduces the Risk of Gallstone and Gallstone Diseases, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Epidemiological studies, linking coffee consumption to reduced risk of gallstone, but not gallstone disease have been contradictory.
Gallstone is a stone formed within the gallbladder out of bile components as a result of the building up of undissolved cholesterol over a prolonged period of time.
Coffee is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In the review of 174 cases of gallstones determined by ultrasonography, 104 cases of postcholecystectomy, and 6889 controls of the normal gallbladder a total of 7637 men received a health examination at four hospitals of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) with 174 cases of prevalent gallstones, 50 had been aware of having gallstones, researchers found that coffee and coffee caffeine drinkers express a high risk of gallstone incidence in compared to non-drinkers.
In this group of middle-aged Japanese men, the relative odds ratio of gallstone disease is 1.7 for coffee consumption of five cups or more per day vs. no consumption and 2.2 for caffeine intake of 300 mg/day or more vs. less than 100 mg/day.
Obviously, these findings contradicted other studies in support of the risk of gallstones reduced by coffee and caffeine intake, including the study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health.
In the review literature of database from PubMed and EMBASE of all published studies before June 2015 researchers at The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University filed the following results
1. Coffee intake regularly and daily had a significantly reduced risk of gallstone disease, in related females, but not in males. based on prospective studies.
2. For patients drinking one cup of coffee per day, the risk of gallstone disease was 0.95
3. For patients drinking 2, 4, and 6 cups of coffee per day, the estimated RRs of gallstone disease reduced to 0.89 (95% CI, 0.79 to 0.99), 0.81, and .75 respectively.
4, Coffee intake showed a linear association with the ameliorated risk of gallstone diseases.
Interestingly, in a cohort of 80,898 women aged 34-59 years in 1980 who had no history of gallstone disease, during 20 years of follow-up, researchers filed the below results
1. Compared to non-caffeine coffee drinkers women, the multivariate relative risks of gallstone disease with cholecystectomy in comparison to a consistent intake of caffeinated coffee (0, 1, 2-3, and > or =4 cups/day) were 1.0, 0.91, 0.78, and 0.72 respectively.
2. Coffee caffeine intake was inversely associated with the risk of cholecystectomy.
3. Caffeine intake (< or =25, 26-100, 101-200, 201-400, 401-800, and >800 mg/day) is linearly associated with a reduced risk of gallstone disease with the multivariate relative ratio of 1.0, 1.03, 1.01, 0.94, 0.85, and 0.85 4. Decaffeinated coffee was not associated with risk.
There is no doubt that the study addresses a significantly inverse association in reduced risk of gallstone disease among coffee drinkers linearly.
Taken together, the contradictory result may warrant further study before one can make a decision on the effect of coffee and coffee caffeine in concern of risk of gallstone, but not in the attenuated risk of symptomatic gallstone disease.
