#GreenTea EGCG Enhances #Antioxidant Status-Induced Neuroprotective Effect Against the Onset of #Dementia, Reserachers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Dementia is the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people. About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.
Green tea may be used as a functional food for the prevention of early-onset and treatment of dementia due to aging progression, a renowned institute study suggested

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome", according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the neutralization trick.

In the 5.7-year prospective cohort study, using a questionnaire, information on daily green tea consumption, and other lifestyle factors collected from elderly Japanese individuals aged 65 years or more, green tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of dementia with an incidence of the occurrent rate of 8.7%.

Furthermore, in the intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of streptozotocin (STZ) animal model explicted chronic brain dysfunction involved long-term and progressive deficits in learning, memory, and cognitive behavior, along with a permanent and ongoing cerebral energy deficit, mice treated with green tea EGCG at a dose of 10mg/kg/day for 4 weeks, showed a significant improvement in reduced oxidative stress parameter against the production of inflammatory and free radical expression.

These inhibitions can be seen in the diminished AChE activity, glutathione peroxidase activity as well as NO metabolites, and reactive oxygen species contents

More importantly, the enhanced antioxidant status-induced neuroprotective effect is a result of EGCG injection in ameliorated inflammatory and free radical causes of cell death in the brain of treated mice.

Dr. Tomata Y, the lead author of the study said, "The lower risk of incident dementia was consistent even after selecting participants who did not have subjective memory complaints at the baseline."

More explicitly, in the finding of natural food for reverse or delay risk factors of dementia and AD, vascular, metabolic, and lifestyle-related factors involved in the development of dementia and late-life cognitive disorders, green tea with a high amount of caffeine stimulates the psychoactive effects in attenuated cognitive impairment/decline and dementia through heightened alertness and arousal and improvement of cognitive performance.

Promisingly, such results have been proposed by several cross-sectional and longitudinal population-based studies, particularly in patients with mild cognitive impairment and progression to dementia.

There is no doubt that green tea may be considered as a function of foods for reduced risk of early-onset and delayed progression of dementia, but longer follow-up periods are necessary before the use of green tea can open new ways for diet-related prevention and treatment of dementia.

#ManukaHoney Protectes the Mucosa from Lesions and Preserved Gastric Mucosal Glycoprotein Against the Risk of Ulccers through Its Antioxidant Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataract, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues", and

"Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping with this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

These results suggested that regardless of the causes of the overexpression of free radicals, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants from a supplement, herbs, fruits, and vegetables can be beneficial in restoring the healthy ratio of free radicals and antioxidants and preventing the onset of oxidative stress.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In order to understand the honey antioxidant activity which has been under intensified study by the science community, a joint study led by the researchers conducted was conducted in an animal model.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats were randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

Honey-treated rats displayed a clinically significant decrease in the ulcer index by completely protecting the mucosa from lesions and preserved gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Application of manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the marker of oxidative stress and plasma TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 concentrations, the set of proinflammatory cytokines produced by the ethanol injection.

These results were attributed to the manuka honey in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol in the tested rats.

The finding suggested that manuka honey exerted a strong antioxidant activity by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the treatment group.

In other words, manuka honey inhibited the oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the onset of the ulcer.

Further differentiation to reaffirm the effects of manuka honey in the inhibition of gastric ulcers in the rat model, researchers examined three different concentrations of honey applied to the tested rats.

During the experiment, researchers found that all 3 different concentrations display a strong effect in It reducing the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) compared to the untreated control group.

In other words, manuka honey protects the rat stomach by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals and pro-inflammatory cytokines inducing oxidative stress.

Application manuka honey also showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and non-enzymatic (GSH) antioxidants which were reduced due to ulcer and levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

The Flow cytometry assay also indicated that treatment of rats with manuka honey has normalized cell cycle distribution and significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The information collected strongly supports the use of manuka honey for the treatment of chronic ulcers and the preservation of mucosal glycoproteins.

Dr. Almasaudi SB wrote in the final report, "Its (manuka honey) effects are due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that resulted in a significant reduction of the gastric mucosal MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and caused an elevation in IL-10 levels.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that manuka honey high in antioxidants can be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Coffee and #Coffee #Caffeine Inhibit Gene and Protein Expression Associated with a Reduced Risk of #Obesity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

In comparison to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending on the stages of the treatment that directly address the cause of the disease.

Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated over time. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Good news for coffee lovers, bioactive components found in coffee may have a potential effect in reduced risk and management of obesity, a renowned institute study opinionated.

According to the joint study led by the National Taiwan University, the efficacy of coffee in reduced risk and management of obesity over the last 10 years of research, may be attributed to
1. decrease lipid accumulation in cells via the regulation of the cell cycle in fat tissue
2. improved fat metabolic formation in both protein and transcription factor expression

According to animal studies.
In humans, it is the result of decreased body weight and visceral fat stored within the abdominal cavity.

Furthermore, the study also expressed the importance of coffee intake in influencing the gut microbiota in obese animals and humans.

Additionally, in the evaluation of possible lipid catabolism and body fat regulation effects of 3-caffeoylquinic acid in Green coffee bean extract (GCBE) in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice fed with only HFD or HFD with GCBE at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, respectively, researchers filed the following results
1. The treated group showed a significantly decreased body weight gain, and liver and white adipose tissue weights, but importantly intake of coffee also regulated adipose tissue lipolysis hormones in breaking down fat accumulation.

2. The efficacy of the treatment group in reduced obesity risk may also benefit the decreased mRNA expression levels of adipogenesis and adipocyte metabolism in both gene and protein expression.

3. Compared to other treated groups, GCBE-treated mice displayed a lower fat mass and relative body weight and decreased fat mass.

More importantly, in the review of papers from in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro experimental studies in animals and human tissues as well as wide population-based epidemiological studies in the last 10 years, researchers at the joint study led by the South University School of Pharmacy said, " there is mounting evidence of the reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes by regular coffee drinkers of 3-4 cups a day. The effects are likely due to the presence of chlorogenic acids and caffeine, the two constituents of coffee in higher concentration after the roasting process".

Taken together, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine have a significant and potential effect in reducing risk and management of obesity, through various active biochemicals in dose deepening manner.

#Herbal #Angelica Inhibits #IntrinsicPathway Associated with #Apoptosis of Neuroblastoma Cells, Reseachers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The brain formed part of the central nervous system is the most complex organ made up of more than billions of nerve cells or neurons.

The functions of the brain are associated with the communication of trillions of connections called synapses and many specialized regions.
A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites, and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that play an essential role in processing and transmitting information.
Neuroblastoma is cancer developed by the immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body, mostly in and around the adrenal glands.

Cancer most commonly affects children age 5 or younger compared to less often in older children.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Net, approximately 800 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the United States.

And 90% of children affected by neuroblastoma are younger than 5.

Sadly, the five-year survival rate of cancer is less than 50%.

Most common symptoms totally depend on the area that has been affected
* Neuroblastoma in the abdomen can induce symptoms of pains, a mass under the skin that isn't tender when touched, and changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation.

* Neuroblastoma in the chest may cause symptoms including wheezing, chest pain, and changes to the eyes, including drooping eyelids and unequal pupil size

Some patients with neuroblastoma may also experience symptoms of back pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, and bone pain.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of brain cancer, scientists examined the effects of Angelica polymorpha Maxim root extract (APRE) cytotoxicity on neuroblastoma cells (NB).

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the final results of the experiment,
* APRE reduced cell viability in NB to a greater extent than in fibroblast cells.
* APRE could inhibit proteins and down-regulated pathways associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

* Furthermore, APRE promoted pro-apoptotic protein and inhibited the expression of proteins associated with anti-apoptosis.
* Moreover, APRE depolarized the mitochondria membrane potential and activation of caspase-3 associated with cell death in the SH-SY5Y cells.

Additional differentiation, researchers said, "APRE, the intrinsic pathway was solely responsible for inducing apoptosis as we also showed that the non-caspase autophagy pathway or ER stress-ROS mediated pathways were not involved".

Taken together, herbal angelica may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neuroblastoma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Chaste Tree Berry 's #Extract Inhibits Parameters Associated with Liver Damage and Injury, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Chaste tree berry is found to associate with reduced risk of liver damage and diseases through various mechanisms, the recent study suggested
Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in mice study, oral administration of chaste tree berry increased significantly the expression of levels of antioxidants in inhibition of free radicals domino' effect and levels of ferric ion in induced hepatotoxicity caused by acetaminophen.

According to Al-Hikmah University, the Hepatoprotective effects of chaste tree berries may also mediate the alternative effects of acetaminophen in serum alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, and total bilirubin levels which can also contribute to hepatoxicity.

Dr. Ajiboye TO said, " Vitex doniana fruits possess antioxidant properties and halted acetaminophen-mediated oxidative rout on cellular proteins, lipids and DNA, made possible by β-sitosterol, platycodin D, apigenin, saikosaponin, chrysin and ellagitanin, (the antioxidants) in the extract".

Furthermore, ethanol extract Vitex glabrata (EEVG) on carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in rats, .displayed also antioxidant activity in inhibited superoxide dismutase, GSH, lipid peroxidation (LPO), catalase, and peroxidase levels in liver homogenate.

Pre-treatment of the extract illustrated a strong inhibited effect against levels of LPO in CCl(4)-intoxicated livers and reduced the elevated serum levels of chemical compounds which can cause liver damage

In fact, the extract displays an enormous hepaprotective effect similar to those of silymarin through enhancing the antioxidant mechanisms of its components, predominantly artemetin.

According to the Vinayaka Mission’s College of Pharmacy study, in the CCl4-induced hepatic injury in albino rats, vitex extracts not only comparable to the standard drug, silymarin (100 mg/kg, p.o.), but also altered serum biomarker enzyme levels which were damaged through injection of CCI4, to near normal in treated rats.

Taking together, there is no doubt that Chaste tree berries may process a protective effect in reducing the risk of harmful chemicals and drug-induced liver damage, but the injection of a large amount should be taken with care.

#EthanolExtract (EE) #Dandelion Porcess a Strong Gastric Emptying and Smooth Muscle Motility Activity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder processes the function to digest foods and transfer the nutrients and fluids to the body's needs.
There is no single cause of the gastrointestinal disorder. Researchers suggested that the cause of the disorder can be attributed directly to the digestive system, or other systemic problems that facilitate the onset of disease.

However, according to the epidemiological studies, bacterial infection, viral infection, inflammation, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, and intake of certain anti-inflammatory drugs are associated with the onset of the acute and chronic digestive disorders.

Dietary factors also play an important in the reduction and promotion of digestive dysfunction. People who are overeating, eating too much fatty food, not consuming enough fiber, and consuming too much alcohol and smoking are at a higher risk of digestive diseases, including ulcers and gastric acid reflux.

Gastric emptying is a test that measures the time that takes for food to empty from the stomach and enter the small intestine. The test is used to find out why your child is vomiting, having stomach pain, or not gaining weight.

Gastrointestinal motility is the contraction of the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.

The gastroprotective effect is a process involved enhancing the function of the digestive system against the harmful organisms in induced chronic digestive disorder.

People with digestive problems may experience certain stomach discomfort, including bloating. constipation. diarrhea. heartburn, nausea and vomiting,......., and belly pain.

Untreated digestive problems over the long term can induce serious ailments of chronic illnesses, as the digestive system no longer performs its functions in provided nutrients and fluids to the needs of the body's cells and tissue.

The results of malnutriments over a long period of time can lead to weakened immune defense and reduced levels of antioxidants produced by tissues of the body in fighting against pathogens,

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of digestive functioning, scientists examined the effects of Taraxacum officinale (TO) is a traditional herbal medicine on gastric emptying (GE) and smooth muscle motility.

According to the administration of ethyl acetate fraction (EA), n-butanol fraction (BF), and aqueous fraction (AF) prepared in succession from 70% ethanol extract (EE) of TO in phenol red meal adopt mice,
* The percentage of GE was 48.8 ± 6.1% (vehicle control), 75.3 ± 6.5% (cisapride positive control), 68.0±6.7% (EE), 53.3±6.0% (EA), 54.1±6.3% (AF), and 86.0±6.5% (BF).

* Furthermore, BF was most effective in accelerating GE, compared to others.

* Moreover, the stimulatory effect of BF on GE was also supported by the observation that BF increased spontaneous contraction of the gastric fundus and antrum and decreased the spontaneous motility of pyloric sphincter in vitro.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "BF seems to be a promising prokinetic agent. BF-induced increase in the contraction of fundus and antrum contributes to an increase in the intra-gastric pressure. BF-induced decrease in the motility of pyloric sphincter contributes to a decrease in the resistance of food from the stomach to the small intestine"

And "The acceleration of GE by BF is likely to be exerted through cholinergic stimulation".

Taken together, Dandelion that processed the aforementioned chemical compounds may be considered a gastric emptying and smooth muscle motility remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry #Anthocyanidins in the Promotion of Gut Microbiota in the Flavor of the Good Bacteria, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system including the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder plays a critical role in maintaining the body's normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and removing waste through the secretary system.

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking down food for nutrients through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Gut Microbiota is a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.

Under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health, including improving the absorption of dietary nutrients in the digestive system, and protecting the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity by facilitating the excretion.

Futhermore, the gut microbiota is also involved in the maintenance of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, gut microbiota enhances the epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of the intestine in nutrient adsorption.

In immunomodulation, gut microbiota interacts with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

However, an imbalance in the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative on human health and diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells. Gut bacteria play an important role in human health, such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function".

, "However, they can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of digestive health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function.

According to the tested differentiation, cranberry anthocyanidins only interfered with the colonization of the gut by Escherichia coli in vitro but also attenuated gut barrier dysfunction caused by dietary insults in vivo.

The efficacy of cranberry anthocyanidins in the promotion of gut microbiota in the flavor of the good bacterias was attributed by the synergic activity between these proanthocyanidins, other cranberry components such as isoprenoids and xyloglucans.

Furthermore, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also have a strong effect on bacterial adhesion, coaggregation, and biofilm formation that may contribute clinical benefits on gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections,

Additionally, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also processed strong anti-inflammatory actions by mediating the gut microbiome.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of digestive health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
