Dithiolthiones, a bioactive ingredient found in cruciferous vegetables may have an effect on reducing the risk of obesity in chronic consumption, some scientists suggested.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated over time.

And, overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Some researchers suggested that the prevalent and widespread obesity in the Western world not only increased the burden of health care and economic costs but also induced a reduced quality of life for adults due to chronic ailments.

The efficacy of SFN in the anti-fat deposit was attributed to the decreased expression of a protein that plays a critical in reducing triglyceride levels and regulating energy homeostasis and increased adiponectin expression in the modulation of glucose and fatty acid oxidation.
Taking foods containing sulforaphane may be effective in managing weight loss for obese patients accompanied by a change of lifestyle with more vegetables and fruits into a diet.

In a highly palatable (HP) diet of male Wistar rats, injection of sulforaphane (SFN, 1 mg kg⁻¹, 4 months treatment)exerted some beneficial effects on obesity and insulin resistance.

Moreover, glucose tolerance was lower in the HP diet groups, especially in the HP group treated with SFN. Except for the liver triacylglycerols.

Moreover, SFN at the specific dose was found to accentuate glucose intolerance and affect the GLUT3 protein in facilitating the transport of glucose across the plasma membranes of mammalian cells in the cerebral cortex and hypothalamus in the HP diet group treated with SFN.

Taken together, plant base sulforaphane may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of obesity with no side effects

#Cranberry in the Promotion of Balancing Ratio of Gut Microbiota, Researchers Find

Gut microbiota is a complex community with over a trillion microorganisms that lives in our digestive tracts.
According to the ESMN, the microbiota can weigh up to 2 kg, including 1/3 of gut microbiota found in most people, comapred to 2/3 that are specific to individuals depending on geography, environment, and lifestyle.


In healthy individuals, the ratio of good and bad microorganisms is balanced. In other words, healthy gut microbiota levels maintain the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract.

A balanced ratio of gut microbiota plays a critical role in the digestion of certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, in the production of vitamins, improvement of digestive functioning, and modulation of the immune function.


The use of antibiotics has been found to damage the gut ecosystem, leading to certain chronic illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.


Unhealthy gut microbiota has been found to
* Decrease the interaction with the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.

* Increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* Reduce nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obesity complications.

In finding a potential compound for the promotion of digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of cranberries' impact on gut microbiota.

The randomized, double-blind, cross-over, controlled design trial included a total of 11 healthy adults consumed for 5 days each a control diet (animal-based diet (meats, dairy products, and simple sugars) plus 30 g/day placebo powder) and a cranberry diet (animal-based diet plus 30 g/day freeze-dried whole cranberry powder).

According to the tested analysis of the stool, urine, and blood samples, compared to the pre-control diet, the control diet modified 46 taxonomic clades in the gut, including an increase in the abundance of Firmicutes and decrease in Bacteroidetes and increased bacteria-derived deoxycholic acid and decreased acetate and butyrate in stool

In other words, the control diet induces a significant change in gut microbiotas by favoring the "bad" organisms.

Comapred to the post-control diet, the cranberry diet modified 9 taxonomic clades, including a decrease in the abundance of Firmicutes and an increase in Bacteroidetes in the flavor of the good organisms in the gut.

Furthermore, cranberry promoted the balancing ratio of gut microbiotas by attenuating control diet-induced increase in secondary bile acids decreasing the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), and increasing urinary anthocyanins and bacterially-derived phenolic acids.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "an animal-based diet altered the microbiota composition to a less favorable profile, increased carcinogenic bile acids, and decreased beneficial SCFA. Cranberries attenuated the impact of the animal-based diet on microbiota composition, bile acids, and SCFA, evidencing their capacity to modulate the gut microbiota".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the promotion of gut health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with the growth of cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

According to the experimental results,
* Danggui users were found to have an increased survival rate when compared with Danggui nonusers (log-rank test p = 0.002).

* The use of Danggui is highly associated with decreased mortality (the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of Danggui users was 0.72 [95 % CI, 0.57-0.92] (p = 0.009).

* The in vitro results showed that BP inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation, and triggered cellular apoptosis depending on the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.
* According to the RNA-seq analysis, BP induced an increase of REDD1 expression that inhibits mTOR signaling, thus inhibiting gastric cancer growth.

* BP suppressed the growth of AGS xenograft tumor in vivo.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Danggui can prolong the survival rate of gastric cancer patients in Taiwan. BP caused gastric cancer cell death through the activation of mitochondria-intrinsic pathway and induced the REDD1 expression leading to mTOR signal pathway inhibition in gastric cancer cells".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered anti-cancer activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fennel may process a strong anti-inflammatory activity in reducing the risk of tissue injury and cell apoptosis, some scientists suggested.

Acute inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response to protect our body against the invasion of foreign bacteria and viruses by the initiated production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection.

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines initiated by the immune system for a prolonged period of time may lead to cell damage and sometimes death of the healthy cells in the infectious site and nearby cells.

Compared to the nontreatment group, the injection anethole group demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect through decreased activities of proinflammatory factors without affecting the immune activity in protecting against infection.

Additional analysis also found that the treatment group reduced acute lung injury caused by injection of LPS through its antioxidants and induced production of host natural antioxidants in the body tissue.

The inhibited LPS results were attributed to anethole effect in suppressed the activation of NF-κB in signaling the production of inflammatory cytokines by blocking the initiation of IκB-α degradation by inhibited TRAF2 in the induction of inflammation through TNF receptor superfamily members and NIK, a key signaling molecule of the noncanonical NF-κB.

Interestingly, further investigation of anethole as an inhibitor of TNF-induced NF-kB activation (an early response) as monitored by electrophoretic mobility shift assay, by suppression of IkBa phosphorylation and NF-kB reporter gene, researchers also indicated that

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of liver diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the effect of a polyphenol-rich cranberry extract (CBE) and high-fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice on hepatic inflammation.

0.8% CBE treatment for 10 weeks showed no change in body weight or visceral fat mass compared to high fat-fed control mice.

However, CBE exerted a significant decrease in plasma alanine aminotransferase (31%) associated with liver stress and histological severity of NAFLD by a 33% decrease in the area and a 29% decrease in lipid droplet size, compared to high fat-fed mice.

Hepatic protein levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and C-C chemokine ligand 2, hepatic mRNA levels of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4,) and nuclear factorκ B (NFκB), associated with the inflammation were also reduced by 28%, 19%, 63%, and 24% and respectively, following CBE supplementation.

Furthermore, the genes related to the inflammasome of the nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, and pyrin domain-containing-3 also were decreased by injection of CBE supplementation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "CBE reduced... hepatic inflammation in high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice"

And "These effects appear to be related to mitigation of TLR4-NFκB related signaling"

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment and management of liver inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
