Risk of Melanoma is Reduced by 3% for Every Cup of Coffee Intake Per Day, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of coffee regularly may have a positive effect in reducing the risk of Melanoma, particularly in healthy people with alternated genes GSTM1 and GSTT1 expression, a renowned institute study suggested.
Melanoma is a type of malignant skin cancer caused by DNA damage, most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds inducing irregular growth of skin cells.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the Istituto Dermopatico dell Immacolata, in comparison to low coffee intake, high frequency of coffee drinking (>once daily) with ≤7 times weekly, showed a significantly lower risk of melanoma.

Interestingly, in the group of people with GSTM1 and GSTT1 null polymorphisms(altered gene expression) subjects, coffees showed an extremely high protective effect against the forming of Melanoma.

Also in the searching of PubMed and EMBASE databases from the earliest available online indexing year to March 2017 for a dose-response meta-analysis on prospective cohort studies, researchers at the Jagiellonian University Medical College, insisted that linear dose-dependent are associated with the development of melanoma risk and total coffee consumption.

The risk of melanoma is reduced by 3% for every cup of coffee intake per day.

Dr. Micek A, the lead author in the joint study said, "(According to) a total of seven studies eligible for meta-analysis were identified that comprised 1,418,779 participants and 9211 melanoma cases,......coffee intake may be inversely associated with the incidence of melanoma".

Further in the demonstration of 2 case-control studies (846 MM patients and 843 controls) and five cohort studies (including 844,246 participants and 5,737 MM cases), compared to the lower and higher caffeine intake daily, caffeinated coffee showed a pooled relative risk (RR) of 0.81.

Risk of an additional cup of coffee caffeine consumption, the relative odds ratio of the risk of melanoma decreased by 0.955
Importantly, the study found no correlated and linear dose-dependent of decaffeinating coffee and risk of melanoma regardless of the volume of daily intake in teasing subjects.

Taken together, there is no doubt that caffeine coffee has a significant effect in reducing the risk of melanoma in healthy and altered GSTM1 and GSTT1 expression subjects in linearly dose-dependent
manner.

#BroccoliSprout #Extract Sulforaphane Inhibits #Oxidativestress Associated with A Decreased Risk of Cognitive Deficits, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cognition is the process of the brain functioning associated with the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Cognitive deficit is a medical condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding, or memory. The cognitive deficit can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive deficit is a short-term health problem caused by drug toxicity and withdrawal, electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensor input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction, or myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary. An acute cognitive deficit may be recovered if the cause is found.

Chronic cognitive deficit is a permanent medical condition caused by the gradual or permanent loss of neurons, leading to problems with language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

There is no single cause of the chronic cognitive deficit. An increase in age, genetic preposition, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, obesity and lack of exercise are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic cognitive deficits.

Some researchers suggested that depending on the locations of the brain that were affected, patients may be at risk of Alzheimer's disease such as brain change caused by the abnormal clumps of beta-amyloid protein (plaques).

Small strokes or reduced blood flow through the brain can also cause a chronic cognitive deficit.

According to the observation of the patient's MRI, the patient's brain with cognitive impairment also showed shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory, enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces (ventricles), and reduced use of glucose, the sugar that's the primary source of energy for cells.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the condition, obesity is also one of the major risk factors for cognitive impairment in the Western world.

Dr. Jason C. D. Nguyen, the lead author on the neurological team wrote in the final report, "The incidence of obesity in middle age is increasing markedly, and in parallel, the prevalence of metabolic disorders including cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes is also rising. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with poorer cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and dementia".

Brussels sprout is a species of wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea), belong to the family of Brassicaceae and has been cultivated since ancient Rome.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cognitive impairment, researchers examined the effects of dietary intake of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extracts against parameters associated with the risk of cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia.

According to the results of the experiment, sulforaphane (SFN) derived from broccoli showed a strong effect in the activation of the transcription factor Nrf2 regulated by Keap1, a cytoplasmic protein that plays a central role against the stimulation of oxidative stress.

Moreover, pretreatment with SFN attenuated cognitive deficit, the increase in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells, and the decrease in PV-positive cells in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus found in patients with a neurodegenerative disease caused by oxidative stress induced by administration of phencyclidine (PCP).

In other words, PCP-induced cognitive deficits were inhibited by the subsequent subchronic administration of SFN.

Believe it or not, chronic dietary intake of glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of SFN) during juvenile and adolescence not only prevented the onset of PCP-induced cognitive deficit but also increased in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells and the decrease in PV-positive cells in the brain at adulthood.

The results strongly suggested the NRF2 gene and the KEAP1 gene had an epistatic effect in gene reaction on cognitive impairment (e.g., working memory and processing speed) in patients with schizophrenia.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "SFN may have prophylactic and therapeutic effects on cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Therefore, the dietary intake of SFN-rich broccoli sprouts during juvenile and adolescence may prevent the onset of psychosis in adulthood".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered a functional food for the promotion of cognitive deficit, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Asparagus Root #Extract Processes #Antidepression Activity by Inhibiting Free Radical Over-Expression Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a dietary vegetable that processes a strong and profound impact in ameliorating psychological depression, a recent study suggested.
Depression is a common psychological disease that affects your normal feelings, thinking, and reactions to events that occur daily in your life.

People with depression may feel ashamed or afraid to ask for help. others suffer in silence.

According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, 300 million people around the world have depression. The number of Americans who suffer from depression is increasing at an alarming rate. As of today, 16.2 million adults in the United States, or 6.7% of all adults have depression in the country.

Women are more susceptible to developing depression than men and fewer than half of those affected by depression in the world are seeking professional treatment.

The disease is the leading cause of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the overall global burden of diseases.

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a loved one, and illness. Over 30 million

Contrary to some misconceptions, depression can be treated and avoidable.

What causes depression? is debatable, however, genetic predisposition, personality, stress and brain chemistry are found to be associated with the onset of the disease.

Chronic medical conditions also can trigger the development of depression. According to the study by the Shanghai University of Sport in the review of 60 articles with a total of 4311 patients, chronic diseases are highly correlated to the expression of depression and reduced quality of life(5).

The study also suggested that increasing the SF-36 physical function subscale in such patients in the short and long term may have a profound and positive effect in ameliorated depression and improved quality of life.

The use of antidepressants by conventional medicine may be effective. However, they can induce side effects of an upset stomach, insomnia, sexual problems, anxiety, dizziness,....., and fatigue.

In severe cases, the intake of depressants may cause serotonin syndrome, seizures, irregular heartbeat, and unconsciousness and some people in the group under the age of 25 may experience suicidal thoughts, according to the BBC report By Lesley Ashmall(6).

Asparagus is a flowering plant, belonging to the species genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, northwest Germany, northern Africa, and Western Asia.

The vegetable has been used from early times as a food and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In an oral administration of methanolic extract of roots of AR (MAR) of the doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg daily for 7 days and then subjected to a forced swim test(FST) in mice, researchers found that application of the extract decreases immobility in FST and increases avoidance response in learned helplessness test (LH), an indication of antidepressant activity.

Dr. Singh GK, the lead author said, " MAR had an insignificant effect on l-DOPA-induced aggressive behavior indicating the absence of activity on the dopaminergic system" and "MAR has significant antidepressant activity and this effect is probably mediated through the serotonergic and the noradrenergic systems and augmentation of antioxidant defenses".

Furthermore, the injection of extracts of Asparagus cochinchinensis (AC) also expressed antidepressive effects, through inhibited oxidative stress that causes neuron cell damage and improved cell signal response and signal transmission.

Total saponin isolated from AC significantly is found to inhibit the free radical of H2O2 in the induction of cell death in cultured cortical neurons.

Additional analysis suggested that AC antidepressant-like and neuroprotective (reducing infarct size) effects are associated with the activation of Shp-2 pathways which are associated with the inhibition of depression in an animal model.

Some researchers suggested that the antidepression activity of Asparagus racemosus (AR) may also be mediated by the neurotransmitter system, and cognitive activities possibly through the cholinergic system involved neuromuscular junctions, preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system...

Moreover, the study also showed that AR may be used as food and have potential drug-drug, drug-food, and food-food interactions with drugs and foods, sharing the cholinergic and monoaminergic pathways in sending a message between neurons, induced protective activities against the development of depression.

These results suggested that asparagus ameliorated depression with its neuroprotective effect by inhibited free radicals that cause neuro-cell damage and improved cell signal response.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti-depression possibilities.

#Herbal #Turmeric's #Curcumin Inhibits Kidney Inflammation and the Onset of #LupusNephritis, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Lupus nephritis is a condition of kidneys an inflammation caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease.
It is a type of glomerulonephritis in which the glomeruli become inflamed.

Kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs, located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood toxins through urinary secretion.

Believe it or not, every day, the blood passes the kidneys many times. Some people with only 10% of kidney function showed no symptoms of toxin accumulation.

However, if the kidney fails to cleanse the blood due to kidney failure, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention in their legs, ankles, or feet.

Depending on the severity of toxins accumulation, some patients may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath and confusion.

Lupus nephritis reduced kidney function may cause symptoms of sudden and unexplained swelling of feet, ankles, legs, fingers, arms or eyes, foamy appearance in urine, and frequent urination.

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of blood in urine and elevated blood pressure.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of lupus nephritis, some researchers suggested genetic preposition may have a strong impact that leads to the early onset of the disease.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote, " Although many SLE susceptibility genes have been identified, the genetic basis of LN is not as well understood".

And, "some of the established general SLE susceptibility genes are associated with LN, recent discoveries highlight a number of genes with renal functions that are specifically associated with LN. Some of these genes associated with LN help to explain the disparity in the prevalence of nephritis between individuals with SLE, and also partially explain differences in LN between ancestral backgrounds".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of lupus nephritis, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on lupus nephritis (LN) induced animal model.

LN established New Zealand Black/White (NZB/W) F1 female mice, at 18 weeks of age were fed a standard diet or a diet containing 1 % curcumin until the end of the study.

During the study, infection of curcumin decreased the proteinuria level and serum levels of IgG1, IgG2a which were elevated in LN mice.

Where proteinuria is the ratio of a protein/creatinine greater than 45 mg/mmol and high levels of IgG1, IgG2a is an indication of immune defect.

Additionally, curcumin also protected the kidneys against inflammation by reducing the anti-dsDNA IgG antibodies which were also elevated in NZB/W F1 female mice.

Where elevated levels of anti-dsDNA IgG antibodies are associated with ongoing inflammation and damage to the kidneys.

Furthermore, IgG immune complex deposition in the glomeruli was also reduced in curcumin-treated mice.

In other words, curcumin suppressed the pro-inflammatory expression in the kidney glomeruli.

Moreover, according to the kidney-tested assays, kidney inflammation was also decreased after curcumin treatment.

More importantly, researchers discovered that treatment with anti-CD25 antibody injection that causes Treg depletion also affects the therapeutic effects of curcumin.

The anti-CD25 antibody is a conventional medicine used for enhancing the immune response.

More precisely, curcumin cannot be used in combination with anti-CD25 antibody daclizumab that
targets the T cells for the treatment of lupus nephritis.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Curcumin exerted a protective effect against LN in NZB/W F1 mice. We speculate that the protective effects of curcumin in LN may involve, at least in part, its interaction with Treg cells".

Taken together, turmeric-processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lupus nephritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#GreenTea Inhbits Paraneters Associated with an Increased Risk of #MetabolicSyndrome, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be served as a functional food for reduced risk and treatment of metabolic syndrome, a renowned institute study suggested
Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors used to calculate the incidence of early onset of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

In a total of 35 obese participants with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to receive one of the following for 8 weeks: green tea (4 cups per day), control (4 cups water per day), or green tea extract (2 capsules and 4 cups water per day), blood samples collected from green tea and green tea extract-treated groups showed a significantly increased plasma antioxidant capacity (1.5 to 2.3 μmol/L and 1.2 to 2.5 μmol/L, respectively in compared to control group.

The study also found that the efficacy of green tea in ameliorated early progression of metabolic syndrome is attributed to the improved expression of serum antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, catalase) and plasma antioxidant capacity in inhibited free radicals in exhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, in the total of 55 obese men and women recruited, injection of 280 and 360 g GTRB provided daily totals of 123.2 and 158.4 mg caffeine, and 188.3 and 242.1 mg of epigallocatechin gallate significantly reduced expression of metabolic syndrome in attenuated weight gain, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose concentrations.

More importantly, the study also found that administration of green tea also reduced levels of blood pressure in obese subjects but could not maintain the weight loss after the study.

Other researchers in the investigation of decaffeinated green tea extract (GTE) and voluntary running exercise (Ex) alone or in combination against obesity and metabolic syndrome in high fat (HF) fed C57BL/6J mice, insisted that the combination of green tea injection and exercise treatment reduced final body mass (27.1% decrease) and total visceral fat mass (36.6% decrease), levels of fasting blood glucose (17% decrease), plasma insulin (65% decrease), and insulin resistance (65% decrease) compared to HF-fed mice.

Taken together, green tea may be one of the best candidates used for the prevention of the onset and treatment of metabolic syndrome in the adult population, but the long-term injection of large amounts may induce liver and kidney toxicity as shown in previous articles.

Topical Crude-#Honey Shows a Strong Effect on Management of Seborrheic Dermatitis and Dandruff, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of dandruff, a common skin problem of many adults, some scientists suggested
Dandruff is a condition of the scalp most commonly caused by dry skin resulting from dry air.

However, in many instances, the condition also is associated with seborrheic dermatitis. leading to rough, scaly skin on the scalp.

In other words, patients with oily skin accompanied by seborrheic dermatitis can lead to overexpression of yeast that causes the development of large white flakes or yellow scales due to uneven shedding and clumping of dead skin cells.

Belief or not dandruff affects over 50% of the general population.

There are many causes of dandruff. Researchers suggested that dry skin, use of wrong kinds of hair products and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema are associated with the onset of dandruff.

In some people, an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus can also cause dandruff.

The increase in age hormone imbalance and prolonged periods of stress are the most common prevalent risk factors associated with the condition.

Most cases of dandruff can be treated with daily shampoo to reduce the oil on the scalp. In severe cases, due to overexpression of fungi, pyrithione zinc shampoos may be recommended.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Dandruff, if left untreated can cause itchy and inflamed scalp that leads to temporary hair loss.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of dandruff with no side effects, researchers examine the anti-dandruff effects from honey, a bee-derived, supersaturated solution composed mainly of fructose and glucose, and contains proteins and amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and other minor components.

The application of honey exerted a significant effect in reducing dandruff, through its moisturizing and antimicrobial properties.

The effective doses range between 1 and 10%, but concentrations up to 70% can be reached by mixing with oils, gel, and emulsifiers, or polymer entrapment.

With an aim to reaffirm the honey anti-dandruff activity, a researcher at the Dubai Specialised Medical Centre and Medical Research Labs, investigated the potential use of topical application of crude honey in the management of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

The study included 30 patients (20 patients were males and 10 were females, their ages ranged between 15 and 60 years) with chronic seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, face, and front of the chest.

Before applying honey to treat the condition, participants showed conditions of scaling, itching, and hair loss. The lesions were scaling macules, papules, and dry white plaques with crust and fissures.

All patients were asked to apply diluted crude honey (90% honey diluted in warm water) every other day on the lesions with gentle rubbing for 2-3 mins. And, honey was left for 3 hr before gentle rinsing with warm water.

After 4 weeks of treatment, honey showed a significant effect on the prophylactic phase, which lasted for six months.

Furthermore, half of the patients were treated with topical honey once weekly, and the other half served as control.

The treatment group demonstrated a reduction of Itching and disappeared scaling within one week. Skin lesions were healed and disappeared completely within 2 weeks.

Moreover, honey administration also improved in hair loss.

None of the patients treated with the honey application once weekly experienced a relapse for six months

Dr. Al-Waili NS, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Crude honey could markedly improve seborrheic dermatitis and associated hair loss and prevent relapse when applied weekly".

The findings clearly suggested that honey may be considered a replacement of chemical ingredients for the prevention and treatment of dandruff associated with seborrheic dermatitis, with no side effects.

#Fennel #Extract Decreases Anxiolytic-Related Behavior Similar to Those of #Diazepam, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a therapeutic effect in reducing the risk and treatment of anxiety, some scientists suggested.
Anxiety is a psychological problem caused by significant feelings of anxiety and fear of present and future events.

In conventional medicine, an anxiolytic also known as an antianxiety agent including buspirone (BuSpar), trazodone, venlafaxine, and several benzodiazepines, is a medication used to reduce physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety disorder.

Anxiety is caused by a combination of several factors. However, stress directly from all sources is considered a major cause of the disease.

Other causes of anxiety include the long-term use of illicit drugs, medication intake, and medical conditions and diseases associated with reduced lung functioning

Although medication may be effective, however, short and long-term use can cause symptoms of nausea. nervousness, dizziness, reduced sexual desire, insomnia.

In severe cases, the medicine can also cause blurred vision. confusion, nightmares, and difficulty thinking or remembering.

If you are taking the above medicine, please make sure that you understand all the side effects.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the investigation of the anxiolytic activity of ethanolic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare fruit by elevated plus maze, rotarod, open field test, and hole board models, researchers found that application of fennel extracts in the does of100-200mg/kg exerts a significant anti-anxiolytic activity, similar to those of standard anxiolytic drugs diazepam (1mg/kg) without inducing intolerable adverse effects.

This result was observed by the increased number of entries and time spent in the open arm in the elevated plus-maze apparatus.

The application of the same doses also promoted a number of rearings, assisted rearing, and the number of square crosses viewed by an open field test.

Further analysis also discovered that fennel extracts also process a potent skeletal muscle relaxant effect assessed by rotarod.

Additionally, in the experiment of the elevated plus maze, rotarod, open field, and hole board used in the evaluation of the psychomotor performance and emotional aspects of rodents removed from their acclimatized cage and placed in an environment expressed anxiety and fear, the application of fennel extract, researchers indicated that
* The Fennel injection group decreases anxiety-related behavior in an open area.

* Treated rodents exhibit a significant increase in the number of open arm entries and rearings, time spent in the center and line crossing, and head dipping.

* The fennel extract-treated group also reduces the number of times of falling through increased muscle relaxant and improved locomotor function.

These results not only support to the holistic use of fennel in the treatment of anxiety but also reconfirmed the efficacy of fennel extract in reducing levels of anxiety in tested rodents who were placed in the environment with an expression of anxiety and fear in the first study.

Truly, the viability of the above is also reaffirmed by the study conducted by the Geethanjali College of Pharmacy in adult Swiss albino male mice randomly divided into six groups (n = 6).

According to the results of the analysis of groups I and II received Tween 80 (5%, v/v) and diazepam (0.5 mg/kg, ip), groups III to VI received orally 50, 100, and 200 and 400 mg/kg doses of the essential oil of F. vulgare, mice groups treated with 50, 100, and 200 and 400 mg/kg displayed a significant reduction of anxiety score through an expression of all tests, including elevated plus maze (EPM), staircase test (SCT) and open field test (OFT) and other various parameters in doses dependent manner.

Compared to a higher dose of 400 mg/kg and a lower dose treatment group, the application of 100 and 200 mg/kg doses of fennel essential oil mice demonstrated a strong decrease in anxiety through an increased percent number of entries and time spent in open arms.

Compared to other doses of the treatment group, the administration of 200 mg/kg dose significantly increased the number of squares crossed at the center in the OFT test.

Furthermore, although the injection of 100 and 200 mg/kg doses of the essential oil-treated mice showed a significant reduction of rearing compared to another group, only the 200 mg/kg dose of the oil expressed a statistically significant reduction in rearing compared with diazepam, the conventional medicine used for the treatment of anxiety.

The discovery in the study postulated that fennel essential oil may have a potential effect in reducing anxiety nonlinearly and doses dependently.

"Fennel extract may possess anxiolytic activity supporting its traditional claim about anxiolytic activity", reported in the 19th edition of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics by Sathodkar, Bhandarkar, and Rege.

Taken together, there is no doubt that fennel extracts and essential oil may be considered a secondary therapeutic treatment compared to standard medicine in the treatment of anxiety.

However, the intake of fennel supplements should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of toxicity.
