#Angelica Sinensis Inhibites #GastricCancer Cell Proliferation, and Triggers Cellular Apoptosis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with the growth of cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

The American Cancer Society wrote, "Cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" and " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer".

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancers in the US.

The prevalent factors associated with the risk of cancer are age, excessive alcohol drinking, exposure to cancer-causing substances, diseases associated with chronic inflammation, unhealthy diet, hormone therapy, and use of immunosuppression.

Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases. Believe it or not, 1/4 of cancer deaths are due to lung cancer.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists examined Radix Angelica Sinensis (Danggui in Chinese) is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). N-butylidenephthalide (BP), a bioactive compound in Dangui, is a potential antitumor agent for various cancer types.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the experimental results,
* Danggui users were found to have an increased survival rate when compared with Danggui nonusers (log-rank test p = 0.002).

* The use of Danggui is highly associated with decreased mortality (the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of Danggui users was 0.72 [95 % CI, 0.57-0.92] (p = 0.009).

* The in vitro results showed that BP inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation, and triggered cellular apoptosis depending on the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.
* According to the RNA-seq analysis, BP induced an increase of REDD1 expression that inhibits mTOR signaling, thus inhibiting gastric cancer growth.

* BP suppressed the growth of AGS xenograft tumor in vivo.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Danggui can prolong the survival rate of gastric cancer patients in Taiwan. BP caused gastric cancer cell death through the activation of mitochondria-intrinsic pathway and induced the REDD1 expression leading to mTOR signal pathway inhibition in gastric cancer cells".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered anti-cancer activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel's #Anethole Modulates the Immune Reponse Against The Onset of Acute Inflammation and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may process a strong anti-inflammatory activity in reducing the risk of tissue injury and cell apoptosis, some scientists suggested.

Acute inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response to protect our body against the invasion of foreign bacteria and viruses by the initiated production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection.

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines initiated by the immune system for a prolonged period of time may lead to cell damage and sometimes death of the healthy cells in the infectious site and nearby cells.

These complications can also cause improper healing for the forming of scars and damage to the tissue of the organ, affecting and limiting the organs functioning, such as liver scars caused by hepatitis virus infection.

Badly enough, some proteins process the duo functions of pro and anti-inflammation. Under abnormal conditions, they can switch from their original action of anti-inflammatory cytokines to pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, chronic inflammation occurs that lasts for months or years when the immune system response to the site of infection failure to eliminate agents that cause acute inflammation.

An autoimmune disorder attacks normal healthy tissue, mistaking them for pathogens that can also cause chronic inflammatory disease.
Most cases of inflammation, are treated with NSAID's, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, in some people intake of these medications can cause common and serious side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, such as pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, stomach ulcers, kidney problems, anemia,.... and swelling in the leg.

If you are presently taking anti-inflammatory medicine, please make sure that you discuss the adverse effects with your doctor.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

Herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

According to a study of BALB/C mice were intraperitoneally administered anethole (62.5, 125, 250, or 500 mg/kg) 1 h before intratracheal treatment with LPS (1.5 mg/kg) and sacrificed after 4 h, researchers found that in the anethole treatment group exerts a significant increase of numbers of mobile white blood cells macrophages and neutrophils, the first immune response to the infectious site.

Furthermore, the application of LPS also induced the production of inflammatory mediators such as matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) all systematic inflammatory cytokines in response to cellular damage and tissue injury.

Moreover, LPS also exhibited the overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) observed in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in facilitated cellular cytotoxicity.

Compared to the nontreatment group, the injection anethole group demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect through decreased activities of proinflammatory factors without affecting the immune activity in protecting against infection.

Additional analysis also found that the treatment group reduced acute lung injury caused by injection of LPS through its antioxidants and induced production of host natural antioxidants in the body tissue.

The inhibited LPS results were attributed to anethole effect in suppressed the activation of NF-κB in signaling the production of inflammatory cytokines by blocking the initiation of IκB-α degradation by inhibited TRAF2 in the induction of inflammation through TNF receptor superfamily members and NIK, a key signaling molecule of the noncanonical NF-κB.

Interestingly, further investigation of anethole as an inhibitor of TNF-induced NF-kB activation (an early response) as monitored by electrophoretic mobility shift assay, by suppression of IkBa phosphorylation and NF-kB reporter gene, researchers also indicated that

* Anethole also suppressed TNF-induced activation of the transcription factor AP-1 in regulated gene expression in response to a variety of stimuli, including LPS application.

*c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) with function in response to stress stimuli, such as cytokines,
And

* MAPKkinase in signal inflammatory response through transmitting information from a receptor on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell.

* Application of anethole also suppressed TNF-induced both lipid peroxidation and ROS generation, through the stimulated production of natural antioxidants in the host and itself, resulting in balancing the ratio of antioxidant and ROS expression.

The illustration and differentiation were elite by the experiment in the application of TNF (100 pM) with the cells pretreated for 240 and 120 min with anethole, NF-kB activation was almost completely inhibited.

However, the inhibition decreased gradually with decreased pre-incubation time.

Taken together, fennel and its bioactive anethole may be considered as a functional food in reduced risk and treatment in acute and chronic inflammatory related-diseases through the properties like a pro-antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

#Polyphenol-rich #CranberryExtract (CBE) Inhibits Stress Markers Associated with Liver Inflammation, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm, and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role in filtering the blood coming from the intestine before passing it to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxins by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body.

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat to the affected area. depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.

In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

Liver inflammation is a medical condition d with autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis and medications, drugs, toxins, and alcohol.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of liver diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the effect of a polyphenol-rich cranberry extract (CBE) and high-fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice on hepatic inflammation.

0.8% CBE treatment for 10 weeks showed no change in body weight or visceral fat mass compared to high fat-fed control mice.

However, CBE exerted a significant decrease in plasma alanine aminotransferase (31%) associated with liver stress and histological severity of NAFLD by a 33% decrease in the area and a 29% decrease in lipid droplet size, compared to high fat-fed mice.

Hepatic protein levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and C-C chemokine ligand 2, hepatic mRNA levels of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4,) and nuclear factorκ B (NFκB), associated with the inflammation were also reduced by 28%, 19%, 63%, and 24% and respectively, following CBE supplementation.

Furthermore, the genes related to the inflammasome of the nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, and pyrin domain-containing-3 also were decreased by injection of CBE supplementation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "CBE reduced... hepatic inflammation in high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice"

And "These effects appear to be related to mitigation of TLR4-NFκB related signaling"

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment and management of liver inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #D-#TartaricAcid enhances Intestinal Absorption of P-Glycoprotein (P-gp), According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color. Phytochemicals may be the next potential source of new medicine for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.

Tartaric acid is a phytochemical of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, apricots, apples, sunflower, avocado, grapes, etc.

The study of the effects of D-tartaric acid (TA) on intestinal drug absorption in the rat model, showed a significant increase in the intestinal absorption of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a class of conjugated proteins. rhodamine 123 and daunorubicin.

Another study of starch preparations analyzed their resistance to enzymatic digestion in vitro with the presence of inorganic (hydrochloric) and organic (citric and tartaric) acids under controlled conditions. Tannic acid showed a significantly stronger influence on starch hydrolysis than citric acid.

The Risk of #CVD is Reduced by 10% for Every Additional Cup of #Greentea Intake, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

A recent study conducted by a respectable institute suggested that green tea may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery disease is a condition of narrowing coronary arteries, caused by a hardening arterial wall, and cholesterol building up in the arteries, leading to blockage of the blood flow in the arteries.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick of neutralization.

According to the review of literature of a study of 22 healthy volunteers, injection of green tea 7 cups/day exhibited anti-cholesterol effects through modifying the low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL) concentrations and decreasing plasma C-reactive protein and interleukin (IL)-6 concentrations involving inflammatory expression.

Green tea consumption of less than 1 cup a day in 725 patients undergoing coronary angiography, is found to be associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction (MI) compared to CVD patients without MI and patients without CAD.

Dr. Ohmori R, the lead author said," Green tea consumption was found to be inversely associated with MI in Japanese patients" and " The protective effect of green tea against atherosclerosis is more likely to be because of the inhibitory effect of LDL oxidation than because of anti-inflammatory effect.".

Additionally, the Japanese population with a green tea drinking habit, showed a significantly reduced risk of a decreased incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), due to the presence of abundant polyphenolic antioxidants.
In a group of 203 patients who underwent coronary angiography (109 patients with significant coronary stenosis and 94 patients without), coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated inversely with the regular green tea drinking group.

The study showed that green tea intake per day was an independent predictor for CVD based on a multivariate logistic regression analysis. but not a predictor of cardiovascular diseases based on the Cox proportional hazard model.

Continuously, in researching the data of PUBMED and EMBASE for studies conducted from 1966 through November 2009 filed the following results:
1. 5 studies on green tea. indicated the lower relative risk depends significantly between the highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of CVD.
2. The risk of CVD is reduced by 10% for every additional cup of green tea intake.

Taken together, green tea may be used as a functional food for healthy adults with a higher risk of CVD.
However, long-term and large amounts of green tea consumption should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Triterpenoid-Rich Fraction (TF) From Ilex Hainanensis Merr. Inhibits Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease through Its Antioxidant Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease with no side effects, according to studies.

Nonalcoholic Fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition of fatty liver disease as a result of accumulated fat in the liver over time, not caused by abusive alcohol consumption.

Most patients in the early stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease do not experience any symptoms until the disease has advanced to the critical stage.

According to the statistics, NAFLD is the most common cause of liver disease in the Western world.

Most diseases associated with NAFLD are obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

People with insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood fat levels, and/or metabolic syndrome, are associated with an increased risk of NAFLD.

Other risk factors for the incidence of NAFLD are the increase in age, ethnicity, and family history.

Believe or not, people who carry certain mutated genes are also at a higher risk of the disease. Dr. Silvia Sookoian in the concern of the global epidemic risk of Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common chronic liver disease wrote, "Although the disease is relatively benign in the early stages, when severe clinical forms, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis and even hepatocellular carcinoma, occur, they result in worsening the long-term prognosis.".

And, " A growing body of evidence indicates that NAFLD develops from a complex process in which many factors, including genetic susceptibility and environmental insults, are involved".

Triterpenoid is various unsaturated hydrocarbons, found in essential oils and oleoresins of plants, including Ilex hainanensis Merr.

In finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with no side effects, researchers at the China Pharmaceutical University evaluated the effect of the triterpenoid-rich fraction (TF) from Ilex hainanensis Merr. on NAFLD in an animal model.

The study included male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats fed a normal diet (control) or high-fat diet (NAFLD model) 4 four weeks, followed by the orally administrated TF (250 mg/kg) for another two weeks.

Before the application of the TF compound, rats fed a high-fat diet displayed abnormally high blood cholesterol levels and a decline in liver function compared to control.

The application of TF on these rats not only restores the health issues caused by a high-fat diet but also decreases the expression of plasma levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Levels of alanine transaminase (p < 0.05), aspartate aminotransferase (p < 0.01), liver index (p < 0.05), the indication of liver oxidative stress and insulin resistance index (p < 0.05) were also decreased by TF administration.

Furthermore, TF improved the liver lesions induced by the high-fat diet.

Moreover, TF injection also alleviated oxidative stress and inflammation status indicated by the declined levels of oxidative markers, free radicals, and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Cui WX, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "TF has the potential ability to protect the liver against NAFLD by regulating lipids metabolism and alleviating insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress".

Additionally, the study reconfirms the traditional use of herbal Ilex hainanensis Merr. for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, researchers examine the compound Chlorogenic acid, kaempferol-7-O-β-d-glucoside, and ilexgenin, a novel triterpenoid, the three major bioactive components in I. hainanensis extract.

Compared to normal rats, the application of I. hainanensis extract exerted a significant change in NAFLD rats.

The efficacy of the herbal extract was attributed to the anti-NAFLD activity of chlorogenic acid, kaempferol-7-O-β-d-glucoside, and ilexgenin A.

Taken together, phytochemical Triterpenoid may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty disease pending the large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Standardized #Cranberry Capsules Reduce Incidence and Symptoms of #Cystitis in Prostate Cancer Patients

Kyle J. Norton

Cystitis is a medical condition associated with inflammation of the bladder, leading to the symptoms of bladder irritation and swelling. Women are prone to the condition compared to men.

The most common cause of bladder cystitis is a bacterial infection involved in a urinary tract infection (UTI). However, radiotherapy, long-term use of certain medicines and hygiene products have also been found to induce bladder inflammation.

The most common symptoms of cystitis are frequent urge to urinate, urge to urinate after you’ve emptied your bladder, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pain during sexual intercourse, and sensations of pressure or bladder fullness.

In serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms of fever, blood in your urine, and cramping in your abdomen or back.

The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder that makes some of the semen carry sperm.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by abnormal cell growth in the tissue of the prostate. The low-growing prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

Conventionally, antibiotics are effective for the treatment of cystitis if the bacteria that cause the infection has been identified.

Most cases of acute cystitis are treated by nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) accompanied by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce pain and inflammation.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of prostate diseases, researchers examined the effect of highly standardized cranberry capsules (containing 72 mg proanthocyanidins [PACS]) compared with of placebo capsules on the incidence and severity of radiation cystitis.

The double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled study included 41 men with prostate cancer who took one capsule a day at breakfast during treatment for 2 weeks.

According to the tested analysis,
* Cranberry capsules (65%) group showed a reduced incidence of cystitis compared with those that took placebo capsules.

* The severe cystitis was reduced to 30% of men in the cranberry group compared to 45% in the placebo.

* Furthermore, the cranberry capsules group also significantly reduced symptoms of pain/burning.

* Additionally, the cranberry capsules group also showed a stronger urine stream and a decrease in the use of significantly fewer pads/liners, compared to placebo.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Men receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer may benefit from using cranberry capsules, particularly those on low hydration regimens or with baseline urinary symptoms".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cystitis.in prostate cancer patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
