Scientists may have found a dietary vegetable that processes a strong and profound impact in ameliorating psychological depression, a recent study suggested.

Asparagus is a flowering plant, belonging to the species genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, northwest Germany, northern Africa, and Western Asia.

The vegetable has been used from early times as a food and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In an oral administration of methanolic extract of roots of AR (MAR) of the doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg daily for 7 days and then subjected to a forced swim test(FST) in mice, researchers found that application of the extract decreases immobility in FST and increases avoidance response in learned helplessness test (LH), an indication of antidepressant activity.

Dr. Singh GK, the lead author said, " MAR had an insignificant effect on l-DOPA-induced aggressive behavior indicating the absence of activity on the dopaminergic system" and "MAR has significant antidepressant activity and this effect is probably mediated through the serotonergic and the noradrenergic systems and augmentation of antioxidant defenses".

Furthermore, the injection of extracts of Asparagus cochinchinensis (AC) also expressed antidepressive effects, through inhibited oxidative stress that causes neuron cell damage and improved cell signal response and signal transmission.

Total saponin isolated from AC significantly is found to inhibit the free radical of H2O2 in the induction of cell death in cultured cortical neurons.

Additional analysis suggested that AC antidepressant-like and neuroprotective (reducing infarct size) effects are associated with the activation of Shp-2 pathways which are associated with the inhibition of depression in an animal model.

Some researchers suggested that the antidepression activity of Asparagus racemosus (AR) may also be mediated by the neurotransmitter system, and cognitive activities possibly through the cholinergic system involved neuromuscular junctions, preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system...

Moreover, the study also showed that AR may be used as food and have potential drug-drug, drug-food, and food-food interactions with drugs and foods, sharing the cholinergic and monoaminergic pathways in sending a message between neurons, induced protective activities against the development of depression.

These results suggested that asparagus ameliorated depression with its neuroprotective effect by inhibited free radicals that cause neuro-cell damage and improved cell signal response.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti-depression possibilities.

Lupus nephritis is a condition of kidneys an inflammation caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease.
It is a type of glomerulonephritis in which the glomeruli become inflamed.

Kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs, located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood toxins through urinary secretion.

Believe it or not, every day, the blood passes the kidneys many times. Some people with only 10% of kidney function showed no symptoms of toxin accumulation.


However, if the kidney fails to cleanse the blood due to kidney failure, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention in their legs, ankles, or feet.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of lupus nephritis, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on lupus nephritis (LN) induced animal model.

LN established New Zealand Black/White (NZB/W) F1 female mice, at 18 weeks of age were fed a standard diet or a diet containing 1 % curcumin until the end of the study.

During the study, infection of curcumin decreased the proteinuria level and serum levels of IgG1, IgG2a which were elevated in LN mice.


Where proteinuria is the ratio of a protein/creatinine greater than 45 mg/mmol and high levels of IgG1, IgG2a is an indication of immune defect.

Additionally, curcumin also protected the kidneys against inflammation by reducing the anti-dsDNA IgG antibodies which were also elevated in NZB/W F1 female mice.


Where elevated levels of anti-dsDNA IgG antibodies are associated with ongoing inflammation and damage to the kidneys.

Furthermore, IgG immune complex deposition in the glomeruli was also reduced in curcumin-treated mice.

In other words, curcumin suppressed the pro-inflammatory expression in the kidney glomeruli.

Moreover, according to the kidney-tested assays, kidney inflammation was also decreased after curcumin treatment.

More importantly, researchers discovered that treatment with anti-CD25 antibody injection that causes Treg depletion also affects the therapeutic effects of curcumin.

The anti-CD25 antibody is a conventional medicine used for enhancing the immune response.

More precisely, curcumin cannot be used in combination with anti-CD25 antibody daclizumab that
targets the T cells for the treatment of lupus nephritis.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Curcumin exerted a protective effect against LN in NZB/W F1 mice. We speculate that the protective effects of curcumin in LN may involve, at least in part, its interaction with Treg cells".

Taken together, turmeric-processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lupus nephritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.


Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The study also found that the efficacy of green tea in ameliorated early progression of metabolic syndrome is attributed to the improved expression of serum antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, catalase) and plasma antioxidant capacity in inhibited free radicals in exhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, in the total of 55 obese men and women recruited, injection of 280 and 360 g GTRB provided daily totals of 123.2 and 158.4 mg caffeine, and 188.3 and 242.1 mg of epigallocatechin gallate significantly reduced expression of metabolic syndrome in attenuated weight gain, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose concentrations.

More importantly, the study also found that administration of green tea also reduced levels of blood pressure in obese subjects but could not maintain the weight loss after the study.


Other researchers in the investigation of decaffeinated green tea extract (GTE) and voluntary running exercise (Ex) alone or in combination against obesity and metabolic syndrome in high fat (HF) fed C57BL/6J mice, insisted that the combination of green tea injection and exercise treatment reduced final body mass (27.1% decrease) and total visceral fat mass (36.6% decrease), levels of fasting blood glucose (17% decrease), plasma insulin (65% decrease), and insulin resistance (65% decrease) compared to HF-fed mice.

Taken together, green tea may be one of the best candidates used for the prevention of the onset and treatment of metabolic syndrome in the adult population, but the long-term injection of large amounts may induce liver and kidney toxicity as shown in previous articles.

Honey may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of dandruff, a common skin problem of many adults, some scientists suggested
Dandruff is a condition of the scalp most commonly caused by dry skin resulting from dry air.

However, in many instances, the condition also is associated with seborrheic dermatitis. leading to rough, scaly skin on the scalp.

In other words, patients with oily skin accompanied by seborrheic dermatitis can lead to overexpression of yeast that causes the development of large white flakes or yellow scales due to uneven shedding and clumping of dead skin cells.

Belief or not dandruff affects over 50% of the general population.

There are many causes of dandruff. Researchers suggested that dry skin, use of wrong kinds of hair products and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema are associated with the onset of dandruff.

In some people, an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus can also cause dandruff.

The increase in age hormone imbalance and prolonged periods of stress are the most common prevalent risk factors associated with the condition.


Most cases of dandruff can be treated with daily shampoo to reduce the oil on the scalp. In severe cases, due to overexpression of fungi, pyrithione zinc shampoos may be recommended.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of dandruff with no side effects, researchers examine the anti-dandruff effects from honey, a bee-derived, supersaturated solution composed mainly of fructose and glucose, and contains proteins and amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and other minor components.

The application of honey exerted a significant effect in reducing dandruff, through its moisturizing and antimicrobial properties.

The effective doses range between 1 and 10%, but concentrations up to 70% can be reached by mixing with oils, gel, and emulsifiers, or polymer entrapment.

With an aim to reaffirm the honey anti-dandruff activity, a researcher at the Dubai Specialised Medical Centre and Medical Research Labs, investigated the potential use of topical application of crude honey in the management of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

The study included 30 patients (20 patients were males and 10 were females, their ages ranged between 15 and 60 years) with chronic seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, face, and front of the chest.

Before applying honey to treat the condition, participants showed conditions of scaling, itching, and hair loss. The lesions were scaling macules, papules, and dry white plaques with crust and fissures.


All patients were asked to apply diluted crude honey (90% honey diluted in warm water) every other day on the lesions with gentle rubbing for 2-3 mins. And, honey was left for 3 hr before gentle rinsing with warm water.


After 4 weeks of treatment, honey showed a significant effect on the prophylactic phase, which lasted for six months.

Furthermore, half of the patients were treated with topical honey once weekly, and the other half served as control.

The treatment group demonstrated a reduction of Itching and disappeared scaling within one week. Skin lesions were healed and disappeared completely within 2 weeks.

Moreover, honey administration also improved in hair loss.

None of the patients treated with the honey application once weekly experienced a relapse for six months

Dr. Al-Waili NS, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Crude honey could markedly improve seborrheic dermatitis and associated hair loss and prevent relapse when applied weekly".


The findings clearly suggested that honey may be considered a replacement of chemical ingredients for the prevention and treatment of dandruff associated with seborrheic dermatitis, with no side effects.

According to the results of the analysis of groups I and II received Tween 80 (5%, v/v) and diazepam (0.5 mg/kg, ip), groups III to VI received orally 50, 100, and 200 and 400 mg/kg doses of the essential oil of F. vulgare, mice groups treated with 50, 100, and 200 and 400 mg/kg displayed a significant reduction of anxiety score through an expression of all tests, including elevated plus maze (EPM), staircase test (SCT) and open field test (OFT) and other various parameters in doses dependent manner.

Compared to a higher dose of 400 mg/kg and a lower dose treatment group, the application of 100 and 200 mg/kg doses of fennel essential oil mice demonstrated a strong decrease in anxiety through an increased percent number of entries and time spent in open arms.

Compared to other doses of the treatment group, the administration of 200 mg/kg dose significantly increased the number of squares crossed at the center in the OFT test.

Furthermore, although the injection of 100 and 200 mg/kg doses of the essential oil-treated mice showed a significant reduction of rearing compared to another group, only the 200 mg/kg dose of the oil expressed a statistically significant reduction in rearing compared with diazepam, the conventional medicine used for the treatment of anxiety.

The discovery in the study postulated that fennel essential oil may have a potential effect in reducing anxiety nonlinearly and doses dependently.

"Fennel extract may possess anxiolytic activity supporting its traditional claim about anxiolytic activity", reported in the 19th edition of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics by Sathodkar, Bhandarkar, and Rege.

#Cranberry Powders Inhibit the Risk of #Hyperglycemia Management Linked to Diabetics Complications, Scientists Suggest

Diabetes is a medical and chronic disease characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in the pancreas that died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, such as type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of type 1 diabetes are associated with a gene mutation that causes the immune to attack the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

Acquired diabetes in most cases is caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, including a high-fat diet and physical inactivity.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 23.1 million people in the United States are living with diagnosed diabetes, costing the healthcare system more than $245 billion per year.

Sadly, there is an estimation that another 7.2 million people have diabetes but remain undiagnosed, accompanied by another 84.1 million adults 18 years and older with prediabetes.

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose in the blood.

Most cases of hyperglycemia are a result of poor management of blood glucose including uncontrolled diet, physical inactivity, miss-medication, and improper use of insulin injection.

Uncontrolled diabetes or hyperglycemia over the long term can lead to diabetic complications, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, pain, polypharmacy, and functional disability.

Long-term elevated glucose values above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) have been found to induce symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, fatigue, and headache.

In severe cases, some patients may also experience life-threatening complications such as fruity-smelling breath, shortness of breath, weakness, confusion, and coma.

Dr in the study of hyperglycemia in the aging population wrote, "Higher levels of Sirt1 and PGC-1α and increased expression of gluconeogenesis pathway genes are found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice. Increased Sirt6 abundance is found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice, which might increase DNA damage repair".

And, "With aging, lower Sirt1 abundance and activity increased acetylated histone modifications and Sirt7 levels, and NOR methylation is found. Thus, whereas in normal aging cell metabolism is reduced, in the diabetic mice a compensatory mechanism may elevate Sirt1 and Sirt6 levels, increasing gluconeogenesis and DNA repair from the oxidative damage caused by hyperglycemia".

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes complications, researchers examined the effect of aqueous solutions of two different cranberry powders (CP and CP-SAB) on hyperglycemia.

In vitro, in vitro CP and CP-SAB administration showed a significant inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) associated with the management of hyperglycemia linked to type 2 diabetes.

Low levels of α-amylase have been found in patients with diabetes.

α-glucosidase is associated with the digestion of carbohydrates is elevated in patients with disbetes

According to the chemical analysis, the efficacy of CP and CP-SAB that inhibits hyperglycemia was probably attributed to the chemical constituents p-Coumaric acid and quercetin derivatives, the main phenolic compounds identified in the cranberry powders.

Furthermore, increased with increased doses (1-5 mg/mL) of CP-SAB exerted the increased α-glucosidase inhibitory activity from 60% to 100%.

At 5 mg/mL, CP-SAB exerted a maximum of 40% inhibition against α-amylase.

Levels of ACE were also significantly inhibited by CP-SAB at the concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL sample concentrations.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These in vitro results indicate the potential of cranberry powders as a dietary supplement and food-based strategies for potential hyperglycemia management".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the management of hyperglycemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green tea may be the next potential functional food used in reducing the risk of early-onset and treatment of high blood cholesterol, a renowned institute study suggested.
Hypercholesterolemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. According to the University of Agriculture, ethanolic extracts of green tea-fed mice in 8 8-week in vivo model expressed significant effects in normalized levels of cholesterol in hypercholesterolemic rats up to 15.45% in comparison control.

The study also revealed that the administration of green tea does not adversely affect the red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet count of the tested rats.

Additionally, comparing the efficacy of black tea (BT) and green tea (GT) in serum and hepatic oxidative abnormalities in hypercholesterolemic rats, after 8 weeks, green and black tea-fed groups displayed significantly lower levels of serum and hepatic cholesterol, triglycerides, serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.

More importantly, in comparison to the control group, the fed group with hypercholesterolemic also expressed lower levels in the serum and hepatic lipid peroxidation, body weight gain, and food efficiency.

Furthermore, in support of green tea in lower levels of high blood cholesterol, Dr. Nomura S, the lead author at the NARO Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science postulated, that the efficacy of green tea with significantly decreased the plasma oxidized low-density lipoprotein levels in mice fed a high-cholesterol diet is depending to the flavonol-rich tea cultivars.

Taken together, green tea with tons of phytochemicals may serve as a functional found with the purpose of reducing the risk of early onset and treatment of high blood cholesterol in the adult population.
