#Cranberry Powders Inhibit the Risk of #Hyperglycemia Management Linked to Diabetics Complications, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a medical and chronic disease characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in the pancreas that died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, such as type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of type 1 diabetes are associated with a gene mutation that causes the immune to attack the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

Acquired diabetes in most cases is caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, including a high-fat diet and physical inactivity.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 23.1 million people in the United States are living with diagnosed diabetes, costing the healthcare system more than $245 billion per year.

Sadly, there is an estimation that another 7.2 million people have diabetes but remain undiagnosed, accompanied by another 84.1 million adults 18 years and older with prediabetes.

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose in the blood.

Most cases of hyperglycemia are a result of poor management of blood glucose including uncontrolled diet, physical inactivity, miss-medication, and improper use of insulin injection.

Uncontrolled diabetes or hyperglycemia over the long term can lead to diabetic complications, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, pain, polypharmacy, and functional disability.

Long-term elevated glucose values above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) have been found to induce symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, fatigue, and headache.

In severe cases, some patients may also experience life-threatening complications such as fruity-smelling breath, shortness of breath, weakness, confusion, and coma.

Dr in the study of hyperglycemia in the aging population wrote, "Higher levels of Sirt1 and PGC-1α and increased expression of gluconeogenesis pathway genes are found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice. Increased Sirt6 abundance is found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice, which might increase DNA damage repair".

And, "With aging, lower Sirt1 abundance and activity increased acetylated histone modifications and Sirt7 levels, and NOR methylation is found. Thus, whereas in normal aging cell metabolism is reduced, in the diabetic mice a compensatory mechanism may elevate Sirt1 and Sirt6 levels, increasing gluconeogenesis and DNA repair from the oxidative damage caused by hyperglycemia".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a closely related to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes complications, researchers examined the effect of aqueous solutions of two different cranberry powders (CP and CP-SAB) on hyperglycemia.

In vitro, in vitro CP and CP-SAB administration showed a significant inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) associated with the management of hyperglycemia linked to type 2 diabetes.

Low levels of α-amylase have been found in patients with diabetes.

α-glucosidase is associated with the digestion of carbohydrates is elevated in patients with disbetes

According to the chemical analysis, the efficacy of CP and CP-SAB that inhibits hyperglycemia was probably attributed to the chemical constituents p-Coumaric acid and quercetin derivatives, the main phenolic compounds identified in the cranberry powders.

Furthermore, increased with increased doses (1-5 mg/mL) of CP-SAB exerted the increased α-glucosidase inhibitory activity from 60% to 100%.

At 5 mg/mL, CP-SAB exerted a maximum of 40% inhibition against α-amylase.

Levels of ACE were also significantly inhibited by CP-SAB at the concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL sample concentrations.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These in vitro results indicate the potential of cranberry powders as a dietary supplement and food-based strategies for potential hyperglycemia management".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the management of hyperglycemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea Decreased the Plasma Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Levels Associated with the Risk of Hypercholesterolemia, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be the next potential functional food used in reducing the risk of early-onset and treatment of high blood cholesterol, a renowned institute study suggested.
Hypercholesterolemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

According to the University of Agriculture, ethanolic extracts of green tea-fed mice in 8 8-week in vivo model expressed significant effects in normalized levels of cholesterol in hypercholesterolemic rats up to 15.45% in comparison control.

The study also revealed that the administration of green tea does not adversely affect the red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet count of the tested rats.

Additionally, comparing the efficacy of black tea (BT) and green tea (GT) in serum and hepatic oxidative abnormalities in hypercholesterolemic rats, after 8 weeks, green and black tea-fed groups displayed significantly lower levels of serum and hepatic cholesterol, triglycerides, serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.

More importantly, in comparison to the control group, the fed group with hypercholesterolemic also expressed lower levels in the serum and hepatic lipid peroxidation, body weight gain, and food efficiency.

Furthermore, in support of green tea in lower levels of high blood cholesterol, Dr. Nomura S, the lead author at the NARO Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science postulated, that the efficacy of green tea with significantly decreased the plasma oxidized low-density lipoprotein levels in mice fed a high-cholesterol diet is depending to the flavonol-rich tea cultivars.

Taken together, green tea with tons of phytochemicals may serve as a functional found with the purpose of reducing the risk of early onset and treatment of high blood cholesterol in the adult population.

#Revactin (Ginger+Herbal Medicines) Show a Positive Effect on #ErectileDysfunction, Overall Satisfaction (OS) and Intercourse Satisfaction (IS)

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of erectile dysfunction with no side effects, according to studies.
Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which a man can not get or keep an erection to have sexual intercourse, affecting self-confidence and contributing to relationship problems.

According to the statistics provided by the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, erectile dysfunction increased with age, affecting 40% and 70% of men in the age group of 40 and 70, respectively.

In other words, the prevalence of complete ED increased from 5% at age 40 to 15% at age 70. 150 million men worldwide have ED.

Age, hypertension, use of antihypertensive drugs, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and daily stress at home, and work have been found to be associated with the prevalent risk of ED.

Some researchers suggested the prevalence of ED may be correlated to widespread obesity in the Western world.

Dr. Skrypnik D, the lead scientist said, "In The United States it (obesity) causes more than 300 000 deaths per year. It leads to many complications, such as ischemic heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and abnormal carbohydrate metabolism".

And, " obesity is also an independent risk factor for erectile dysfunction in men. 79% of men presenting erectile disorders have a BMI of 25 kg/m2 or greater. BMI in the range 25-30 kg/m2 is associated with 1,5 times, and in the range of over 30 kg/m2 with a 3 times greater risk of sexual dysfunction".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural treatment for patients with erectile dysfunction with no side effects, researchers examined the effects of oral administration of Revactin twice daily (total daily dose of 500 mg of ginger root, Muira puama, and Paullinia cupana and 1,600 mg of L-citrulline in 54 middle-aged men with erectile dysfunction.

Based on the results from the complete IIEF-15 questionnaire [domains: erectile function (EF), orgasmic function (OF), sexual desire (SD), intercourse satisfaction (IS), overall satisfaction (OS)] at baseline (B), 1 month (M1), 2 months (M2) and 3 months (M3) and report any side effects, Revactin exerted a strong effect on the increase in median domain scores of OF, SD, IS, OS over 3 months compared to baseline median scores.

However, after taking other factors into account, statistical significance was found only in the EF, IS, and OS median domain scores.

5 patients in the study showed the reported treatment side effects (e.g., dyspepsia, heartburn, migraine) and none considered severe.
Overall, approximately 50% of the patients reported a significant improvement in EF (P<0.05), compared to baseline.

Dr. Nguyen S, the lead scientist said, "Revactin®, a combination of 3 nutraceuticals packaged with L-citrulline, appears to have the same excellent safety profile known for each of its individual four components".

Taken together, ginger combined with other herbal medicines may be considered functional alternatives for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cabbage Processes Immunomodulatory Activity Against the Onset of #AllergicDiseases, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of foreign microorganisms and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

In other words, the immunomodulatory activity involved in antimicrobial agents is to modulate the genes involved in immune reactions, or of the neurohormonal system which regulates immune functions and any toxic or immunotoxic effects such as allergic reactions or destruction of immune effectors, that may cause harm to the body or interfere with the body normal function.

The overactive immune system is a class of autoimmune diseases or chronic inflammatory diseases caused by the immune system attacking the body's tissue, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus,.... and multiple sclerosis.

The widespread chronic inflammatory diseases in modern society are a burden to humans because of life-long debilitating illnesses, increased mortality, and high costs for therapy and care.

The underactive or weakened immune system is caused by a primary immune deficiency or acquired immune deficiency. may not protect the body against foreign organisms in initiated infection.

Sometimes, temporarily weakening the immune system may also be caused by the intake of certain conventional medicines, such as chemotherapy or drugs that treat cancer.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belonging to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

In finding a natural whole for the improvement of immune functioning, researchers examined the immunomodulatory effect and mechanism of Lactococcus lactis A17 (A17), isolated from Taiwan fermented cabbage, on ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice.

In live (A17-A) and heat-killed A17 (A17-H) orally administered to OVA-sensitized BALB/c mice effects, researchers found that live (A17-A) and heat-killed A17 (A17-H) induced allergic effects by increasing the

* B-cell response that was modulated by diminishing IgE production and raising OVA-specific IgG2a production and the T-cell response that was modulated by increasing IFN-γ production and decreasing IL-4 production.

* Furthermore, the mRNA expression of NOD-1, NOD-2, and TLR-4 associated with the expression of inflammation and infection was down-regulated by A17.

In other words, a naïve Lactococcus lactis A17 strain exerted a significant immunomodulatory activity against allergic diseases via oral administration

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "the ameliorative effects of A17 may be caused by modulating NOD-1 NOD-2, and TLR-4 expression".

Taken together, cabbage processes immunomodulatory activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Light Intake of #Coffee and Coffee #Caffeine Improve the Lacunar Infarcts and Better Executive Function, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Epidemiological studies do not agree that regular coffee consumption may be associated with improved cognitive function, a joint study led by the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais suggested.

Cognitive function is a cerebral activity in acquired knowledge, including all means and mechanisms of acquiring information.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the coffee plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a cohort of 14,563 public service workers (35-74 years old) to examine coffee consumption habits and cognitive function using a standardized neuropsychological test, researchers at the above institutes filed the following results
1. Elderly drinking 2-3 cups/day, showed a significant improvement in the mean words remembered on learning, recall, and word recognition in comparison to never/almost never groups.

2. And those drinking more than 3 cups a day exhibited increased mean words pronounced, according to the semantic verbal fluency test in comparison to the same groups.

Dr. Araújo LF, the lead author said, "Coffee consumption might be slightly beneficial to memory in the elderly but lacks a dose-response relationship".

Furthermore, in 2,914 participants from the population-based Rotterdam Study (mean age: 59.3±7.2 years, 55% females) to assess coffee consumption, performed brain MRI, and cognition at baseline, researchers found that
1. Higher coffee consumption showed a lower prevalence of lacunar infarcts [odds ratio per cup increase: 0.88 (95% CI:0.79;0.98)]involved development of stroke, and smaller hippocampal volume in the expression of memory ability.
2. Coffee consumption promoted better performance on the Letter Digit Substitution Task
3. But do not improve on the 15-Word Learning test delayed recall.

Dr. Araújo LF, again said, "...(there is a) complex associations between coffee consumption, brain structure, and cognition. Higher coffee consumption was cross-sectionally associated with a lower occurrence of lacunar infarcts and better executive function.

Interestingly, according to the study of coffee consumption and other baseline variables of 2606 middle-aged Finnish twins assessed in 1975 and 1981 by postal questionnaires, after the median follow-up of 28 y, coffee consumption was not an independent predictor of cognitive performance in old age, according to the linear regression analysis.

The study also insisted that coffee drinking did not affect the risk of mild cognitive impairment or dementia, but expressed an inconsistent cognitive score.

Taken together, coffee and coffee caffeine can only improve the performance of some cognitive functions but not as a whole, particularly in the older population.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Inhibits Carcinogenic Expression Associated with a Reduced Risk of #SkinCancer, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Skin, a large organ in the human not only acts as a barrier to protect the internal organs against the invasion of foreign pathogens, but also protects the body against mechanical impacts and pressure, variations in temperature, radiation, and chemicals.

Skin cancer is a medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the skin tissues.

Most cases of skin cancer start in the cells on the surface of the outermost inner lining tissue before penetrating into deeper layers.

After growing in size at the advanced stage, by penetrating into deeper layers of the infected tissue, the cells of the tumor may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through blood and fluids circulation, leading to secondary metastasis of secondary breast, lung, and colon tumor.

Believe it or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. As of today, there are 58 million Americans are living with skin cancer.

Approximately, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. The 5-year survival of among all people with melanoma of the skin is 92% compared to 100% of those with localized skin cancer.

If you have experienced some of the symptoms such as a sore that doesn't heal or comes back after healing, pale white or yellow flat areas that look like scars, raised and scaly red patches, small, smooth and shiny lumps that are pearly white, pink or red, a pink growth with raised edges and indents in the center and a growth that has small blood vessels on the surface of the skin, you may be on the early stage of skin cancer, please check with your doctor immediately.

Dr. Epstein JH. wrote, "Nonmelanoma skin cancers, like most malignancies, increase in incidence with increasing age. However, in general, they are not due to the aging process but are primarily due to solar radiation".

And, "genetic disease xeroderma pigmentosum supports the concept that such damage, if not repaired, will lead to cancer formation. It also has been suggested that unrepaired damage to deoxyribonucleic (DNA) and other macromolecules is at least in part responsible for the aging process in general".

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) chemopreventive potential in a chemically-induced skin carcinogenesis mouse model.
According to the tested analysis, WA significantly suppressed skin tumor formation by suppressing cell proliferation.

Furthermore, carcinogen-induced the increase of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1) associated with cancer metastasis was also blocked by the application of WA.

Additionally, in melanoma cells, WA also suppressed the expression levels of ACC1.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "withaferin A may have potential in chemoprevention and ACC1 may serve as a critical target of WA".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of skin cancer in breast cancer patients, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

#Turmeric's #Curcumin Protects the Heart Against #Cardiotoxicity and Cardiac Injury, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiac toxicity is a condition in which the heart has been damaged to some extent caused by harmful chemicals, including toxins induced by the treatment of chemotherapy.
Cardiac toxicity reduces heart muscle function to pump blood and is a leading cause of heart failure.

Long-term intake of certain medications and people who are under treatment of chemotherapy have been found in most cases of cardiotoxicity.

Dr. Danúbia Silva dos Santo and colleagues in the examination of doxorubicin (DOX) in the risk of cardiotoxicity wrote, "Doxorubicin (DOX) is among the most effective anticancer agents ever developed. DOX has been used mainly for the treatment of breast cancer, solid tumors in children, soft tissue sarcomas, and aggressive lymphomas".

However, researchers continued, "the use of DOX may have dose-dependent cardiotoxic effects that generate changes in myocardial structure, which can develop into severe and irreversible cardiomyopathy".

Additionally, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, genetic preposition, a malignant disease associated with the amyloid deposited on the heart or other organs, high blood pressure, untreated hyperthyroidism, and vitamin b2 deficiency are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with cardiotoxicity.

Depending on the cells of the areas of the heart that have been damaged, cardiac toxicity includes cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, pericarditis, acute coronary syndromes, and congestive heart failure.

The most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity are associated with not enough blood circulation in the body such as tiredness and fatigue, a long-term (chronic) cough, shortness of breath, floating due to the enlarged heart muscle, abnormal heart or lung sounds and swelling in your hands, feet, or unusual weight gain.

Conventionally, treatment of cardiotoxicity totally depends on the types of the disease including
Beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors induce (widen) the arterial dilation and improvement of the blood flow and diuretics.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of heart disease associated with chemical toxicity, researchers examined the effect of nano micelle curcumin on BPA-induced subchronic cardiotoxicity in rats.
The selected rat was randomly divided into 6 groups including control, nanomicelle curcumin (50 mg/kg, gavage), BPA (50 mg/kg, gavage), nanomicelle curcumin (10, 25, and 50 mg/kg) plus BPA for 4 weeks.

Based on the results of assays, BPA significantly induced cardiac injuries including focal lymphatic inflammation, nuclear degenerative changes, and cytoplasmic vacuolation associated with inflammation.

Compared to the control, BPA caused increased body weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and cardiac stress observed by the increased levels of malondialdehyde and myocardial cell wall injury observed by the creatine phosphokinase-MB level.

Furthermore, levels of antioxidant enzymes in the rat such as glutathione content were also decreased by the BPA injection.

The cardiac injury in BPA was also observed by the electrocardiographic graph, RR, QT, and PQ intervals.

BPA was also found to induce increased expression of genes associated with cardiac cell apoptosis and inhibited gene expression of cardiac cell survival.

However, nano micelle curcumin (50 mg/kg) administration significantly reduced the BPA toxic effects induced by the aforementioned parameters in rat heart tissue.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results provide evidence that nano micelle curcumin showed preventive effects on subchronic exposure to BPA-induced toxicity in the heart tissue in rats".

Taken together, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
