#Healthyfood #Tomato Inhibits Liver Stress Markers Against the Onset of #HepaticSteatosis, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Hepatic steatosis is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver.
In other words, if the intrahepatic fat of your liver is more than 5% of your liver weight, you are considered to have hepatic steatosis. Over time, untreated hepatic steatosis can lead to liver metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, and advanced forms of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Epidemiologically, hepatic steatosis has been found to induce complications in patients with obesity, alcohol intoxication, and/or hepatic disorders.

There are several mechanisms involved in the accumulation of intrahepatic fat, including increased flux of fatty acids to the liver, increased de novo lipogenesis, and/or reduced clearance through β-oxidation or very-low-density lipoprotein secretion.

People who are obese, having the condition of insulin resistance or diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, rapid weight loss, and use hepatotoxic medications total parenteral nutrition (TPN) are at an increased risk of hepatic steatosis.

Out of many prevalent factors involved in the onset of hepatic steatosis, some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades in the Western world may have a strong and negative impact that accelerates the incidence onset.

Dr. Michael D. Roberts, the lead scientist wrote, "Six weeks of WD feeding caused hepatic steatosis development as evidenced by the 2.25-fold increase in liver triacylglycerol content, but did not induce advanced liver disease (i.e., no overt inflammation or fibrosis)".

And, "sub-chronic WD feeding appears to increase hepatic steatosis development over a 6-week period but only induces select inflammation-related liver transcripts, mostly acute phase response genes. These findings continue to outline the early stages of NAFLD development prior to overt liver inflammation and advanced liver disease".

The results strongly suggested the risk of the Western diet on hepatic steatosis developing.

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of hepatic steatosis, researchers examined the effect of tomato consumption on biomarkers and gene expression related to lipid metabolism in rats with induced steatosis.

The study included 24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (8 weeks old) randomly assigned to (n = 6 rats/group) four experimental groups, including NA (normal diet and water), NL (normal diet and tomato juice), HA (high-fat diet and water) and HL (high-fat diet and tomato juice).

According to the tested assays, before treatment of tomato, the HA group fed a high-fat diet-induced hepatic steatosis confirmed by the levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, an indication of liver stress and injury.

Tomato treated group showed a significant increase in levels of lycopene and its secondary metabolites in the livers of these animals, particularly in HL than in the NL group, apparently due to higher absorption (63.07 vs. 44.45%).

Furthermore, tomato treated group protected the liver by alleviating oxidative stress through the reduction of isoprostanes in the urine observed by increased levels of antioxidant enzymes.

Moreover, levels of high-density lipoprotein were also increased in the HL group compared to the HA group.

Interestingly, overexpression of several genes related to lipid metabolism was also found in the HL group compared to nontreatment groups.

In other words, tomatoes inhibited the onset and progression of hepatic steatosis in high-fat diet mice by inhibiting liver oxidative stress and enhancing lipid metabolism.

Dr. Martín-Pozuelo G, the lead scientist wrote, "The consumption of tomato juice and tomato products reduced hallmarks of steatosis, plasmatic triglycerides, and very-low-density lipoproteins, and increased lipid metabolism by inducing an overexpression of genes involved in more efficient fatty acid oxidation".

Taken altogether, tomato may be considered a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of hepatic steatosis, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Angelica Protects the Cell DNA integrity, Enhances Cytototicity Against the Omset of #Glioblastoma, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of chronic and medical conditions characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably that start on the inner lining of the tissue of an organ due to the alternation of cell DNA.
At the advanced stage, most cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs through blood and fluid circulation.

Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain, caused mostly by abnormal astrocytic cells and dead cells (necrosis). The disease is considered one of the most aggressive cancers induced by the alternation of cells originating from the brain, including the cerebral hemispheres.

According to statistics, most patients diagnosed with cancer die within 12 to 15 months. Less than 5% of patients have survived longer than five years.

If you are male you are at 1.5 higher risk of glioblastoma, compared to your female counterpart.

The causes of glioblastoma are unknown, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and environmental factors, previous radiotherapy, and a weakened immune system may be some risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

However, most cases of GBM are diagnosed at an older age with a median age of 64. Some researchers suggested that aging with the change in body function may be one of the major risk factors that cause the incidence.

Most patients with GBM experience symptoms of brain swelling caused by the overexpression of the fluid surrounding the tumor.

Conventionally, due to the nature of rapid growth, surgery is necessary to relieve the brain pressure and remove the tumor as much as possible, followed by radiation and chemotherapy.

Furthermore, the condition also shares the common symptoms of other types of cancer such as gastrointestinal discomforts accompanied by personality changes, and symptoms similar to those of a stroke.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, scientists examined the effects of Angelica Sinensis on glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).

Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to tested analysis, Angelica sinensis accelerates apoptosis by their key substances influencing factors of apoptosis pathways, including
* Biochemical stress associated with cell death such as oxidative stress in the induction of cytotoxicity.

* Induced DNA damage to the cancer cells by enhancing the tumor suppressor protein such as p53.

* Lack of growth factors involved in cell proliferative and differentiation.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "our review puts emphasis on the potential of natural products in GBM treatment by regulating multiple malignant cancer-related pathways solving pending problems such as reducing toxicity and side effects".

Taken together, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Combined with Cytotoxic Drugs Enhance the Efficacy of Chemo Drug and Reduce Adverse Effects, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Bromelain may have a strong effect in enhancing the chemodrug effect for the treatment of cancer, according to studies.
Chemo drugs are a group of medications used for the treatment of cancers that have been spread to other healthy tissues and organs or reduce the size of the tumor before removing it by surgery.

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by irregular cell growth in the organ tissues. The originated site where the cancer starts is considered primary cancer.

Most cancers at the advanced stage can induce secondary metastasis, by traveling a distance away from the primary site to infect other healthy tissues and organs.

Conventionally, the use of chemo drugs may be effective in controlling cancer, however, the medicines also have been found to cause significant side effects, including hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea and vomiting and constipation, leading to reduce the quality of life of patients at the time of treatment.

According to the American Cancer Society, in the US, nearly 14.5 million children and adults with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2014.

Believe it or not, prostate (43%), colon and rectum (9%), and melanoma (8%) are the three most common cancers among male cancer survivors, and breast (41%), uterine corpus (8%), and colon and rectum (8%) are the most common among female survivors.

Most cases of cancer can be treated successfully if diagnosed in the early stage. Some cancers such as breast cancer have a 5-year survival rate closed to 100% if diagnosed at the local stage.

As of today, due to unbearable side effects in some cancer patients, the scientific community is urgency to discover plant compounds that can improve the chemo drugs' efficacy accompanied by reducing the adverse effect through dose reduction.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural compound that enhances the chemo drug penetration for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the antitumor properties of bromelain on hydrolyzing glycosidic linkages in faulty glycoprotein associated with cancer.

Injection of bromelain has been found to inhibit the MUC1, a glycoprotein involved in tumor cell invasion, metastasis, and chemo-resistant properties.

Additionally, bromelain enhanced the efficacy of cisplatin and 5-FU in cancer treatment by affecting the barrier function of MUC1.

Furthermore, bromelain protected the integrity and the viability of skin cells against the onset of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) induced by the expression of MUC1.

Based on the results, researchers said, "current evidence indicates that bromelain may have the potential of being developed into an effective anticancer agent for MPM".

Moreover, in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM), treatment with various concentrations of bromelain after 4 and 72 h showed an adverse effect on the tested cancer cell through its antitumor activity in inducing cell death by apoptosis and autophagy.

Interestingly, the combinations of bromelain and cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin or 5-FU) assessed at 72 h showed a significant effect in inducing cytotoxicity compared to the bromelain treatment group.

These results suggested that bromelain may be combined with conventional chemo drugs to enhance the anti-cancer effect and reduce the adverse effect of chemotherapy in cancer patients.

Taken together, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the enhancement of chemotherapy, and reduction of side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Dandelion Extract Processes Antioxidant and Antiproliferative Activity Against #Cancer, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cell proliferation is the radical growth of cells to replace the damage or injury through the cell cycle division.
Cell proliferation is a process and a necessary step for wound healing.

All normal cells undergo cell cycle division to replace the old cells with new cells through limited cell division.

On the other hand, cancer cells can multiply definitely.

In cancer, antiproliferation is a process in which the cancer cells are killed or limited from growing through many mechanisms, including the use of chemodrugs.

From the immune perspective, anti-proliferation can be carried out by activating the genes associated with cancer suppression, programming cell death,.... and cell cycle arrest.

A suppressive gene, such as pro-apoptotic p53 induces cancer cell death through cell cycle arrest. In other words, the gene inhibits tumor growth by interrupting the cancer cell cycle division.

The programmed cell death gene, such as BCL-2 induces cell death by either inducing or inhibiting apoptosis. In other words, If cells are no longer needed or damaged, activating an intracellular death program will cause cell death.

From the phytochemicals perspective, anti-proliferation can also be carried out by antioxidants in which stimulate the free radicals overexpression to induce toxicity to tumor cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Some cancers can stimulate the production of a new blood vessel for cancer cells to grow and others can make enzymes that break down normal cells and tissues as they grow.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists compare five different common South European species of Taraxacum (T. obovatum (Willd.) DC., T. marginellum H. Lindb., T. hispanicum H. Lindb., T. lambinonii Soest and T. lacistrum Sahlin) antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity.

According to the dissimilarities between species in LC/MS patterns, T. marginellum demonstrated strong intracellular antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity by reducing the expression of ROS.

Compared to the other 3 species, T. marginellum showed the most efficiency against the induction of free radicals overexpression in vitro.

Furthermore, in free radical theory, compared to T. marginellum, T. obovatum was the best free radical scavenger, and a relevant cytotoxic effect was found in T. lacistrum extract over HeLa and HepG2 cell lines.

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy that processes antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity, in a type-dependent manner, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea #Expresses Protective Activity Against Antigen-Induced Airway Inflammation Associated with a Reduced Risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be considered as a potential pharmacotherapy for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a renowned institute study suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will resolve the problem.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition of lung disease caused by obstruction of airflow in normal breathing.

In a total of 13,651 adults from three Dutch cities examined from 1994 to 1997. observation of dietary intake estimated using a food frequency questionnaire, and flavonoid intake calculated using specific food composition tables, showed a significant effect of flavonoid intake regularly in reduced risk COPD.

According to the returned questionnaire, total catechin, flavonol, and flavone intake was positively associated with FEV1 in airflow of a deep breath and inversely associated with chronic cough and breathlessness, common symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

More specifically, Dr. Tabak C, the lead author said, "Flavonol and flavone intake was independently associated with a chronic cough only"

Furthermore, Chafuroside A (CFA), a water-soluble flavone C-glycoside, isolated from oolong tea, in oral administration exhibited at 0.5mg/kg or higher exhibited a profound effect in attenuated inflammatory symptoms in a dose-dependent manner, in experimental asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-like a model.

In fact, Biomarker profiling revealed that the CFA/SAM at 0.1mg CFA/kg equipotent to CFA at 1.0mg/kg testing result also expressed protective activity against antigen-induced airway inflammation.

Taking together, there is no doubt that green tea may be used as a portion of therapeutic and functional food for reduced risk and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) through the expression of plant phytochemicals, but large amount intake regularly should be taken with care in prevented toxicity.

#TualangHoney Supplementation Shows a Strong Effect in Boosting Memory by Inhibiting #Oxidativestress Markers, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a profound and positive effect on boosting human memory, some scientists suggested
Memory is a process of the mind in learning and storing information.

Memory impairment is a condition of not remembering new and current events which may be recalled in a short period of time, affecting mostly the older population.

Memory impairment is an early symptom associated with late-life neurodegenerative diseases.

In contrast to general belief, memory impairment not only is associated with the progression of neurodegenerative diseases but also can be caused by other factors such as medical conditions including stroke and brain injury.

Long-term use of certain medications such as antidepressants, antihistamines, anti-anxiety medications, excessive alcohol drinking, substance abuse, and tobacco are some major risk factors associated with the onset of memory loss.

Some researchers suggested that people who are living under long-term stress and anxiety or follow a nutritionally deficient diet are most vulnerable to the condition.

According to the article "Stress might lead to memory loss and brain shrinkage, study says" By Sandee LaMotte, CNN wrote, "If you live a high-stress life, you could have memory loss and brain shrinkage before you turn 50, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology".

"Higher levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, seem to predict brain function, brain size, and performance on cognitive tests," said study author Dr. Sudha Seshadri, professor of neurology at UT Health San Antonio.

"We found memory loss and brain shrinkage in relatively young people long before any symptoms could be seen," Seshadri said. "It's never too early to be mindful of reducing stress."

In other words, long-term stress can induce the production of certain hormones such as cortisol which have strong implications on the brain in the induction of memory loss.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In finding the correlation and association between aging and stress exposure and memory impairment, researchers examined the potential protective effects of Tualang honey supplementation on memory performance in aged rats exposed to noise stress.

Tested rats were given orally, 200 mg/kg body weight of Tualang honey supplementation for 28 days, before exposing to loud noise, 100 dB(A), 4 hours daily for 14 days.

Rats subjected to noise stress exhibited significantly lower memory performance and higher oxidative stress, through the increased expression of oxidative stress markers, elevated malondialdehyde, and protein carbonyl levels.

The stress rats also exhibited a reduction in the levels of antioxidant enzymes compared to the nonstressed rats.

Tualang honey supplementation applied to the stress rats showed a significant improvement in memory performance, by decreasing oxidative stress levels and increasing the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentration, which was reduced due to stress.

Furthermore, Tualang honey also normalized the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the stress rat's body and enhanced neuronal proliferation in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus associated with memory, particularly, in long-term memory.

Dr. Azman KF, the lead scientist in the final report wrote, "Tualang honey protects against memory decline due to stress exposure and/or aging via enhancement of mPFC and hippocampal morphology possibly secondary to a reduction in brain oxidative stress and/or upregulation of BDNF concentration and cholinergic system".

The results underlined the effects of Tualang honey effect in boosting short and long-term memory which was significantly reduced by stress exposure and/or aging.

Moreover, in the study of a total of forty-eight adult male rats randomly divided into the following four groups: i) nonstressed with a vehicle, ii) nonstressed with Tualang honey, iii) stressed with a vehicle, and iv) stressed with honey with supplement was given once daily via oral gavage at 0.2 g/kg body weight, researchers found that
* The rats subjected to noise stress were found to process higher levels of depressive-like behavior and lower memory functions compared to the unexposed control rats.

* Tuatang honey supplementation regimen successfully counteracted the effects of noise stress.

* Tualng honey also increased the climbing swimming and mobility times significantly.

These results suggested that Tualang honey normalizes the cognitive function of the rats exposed to noise stress, similar to those of the first study.

Taken together, Tualang honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of cognitive impairment, pending the larger and multicenter human study.

#SauredyOil (3.5 g of LCMUFA and 3.4 g of Omega-3 FAs) Supplementation Processes a Positive Effect on Plasma Cholesterols in Healthy Individuals

Kyle J. Norton

Lipid refers to cholesterol and triglycerides.
Hypertriglyceridemia is a health issue associated with abnormally high blood levels of triglycerides,
Triglycerides are body fats found in humans derived from glycerol and saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells for energy in the future when the body needs them.
if the levels of triglycerides are above 500 mg/dL (above 5.7 mmol/L), you have high blood triglyceride.

Abnormal high levels of triglycerides have been found to induce symptoms of gastrointestinal pain. difficulty breathing, memory loss, dementia, and yellowish deposits of fat on or around the eyelids.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalence ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefit from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol is produced by the liver and absorbed through diet to build cell walls, produce steroid hormone and vitamin D, and aid digestive, The primary of triglycerides function is to store unused calories and provide your body with energy.

The healthy ratio of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a number that is less than 4.

Fish oil is derived from the tissues of fish, containing a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids.
The three main components of omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic disease, researchers launched a first-in-human trial of LCMUFA-rich saury fish oil supplementation effect on plasma lipids.

The double-blind, randomized, crossover clinical trial included 30 healthy normolipidemic adults (BMI <25 kg/m2; mean TG, 84 mg/dL) who were treated with either 12 g of Sauredy oil (3.5 g of LCMUFA and 3.4 g of omega-3 FAs) or identical capsules with control oil (a mixture of sardine and olive oil; 4.9 g of shorter-chain MUFA oleate and 3 g of omega-3 FAs).

According to the results, saury oil supplementation was safe and resulted in LDL particle counts 12% lower than control oil.

In a linear mixed effect model, saury oil also showed a minor effect on increasing HDL particle size (9.8 nm vs 9.7 nm; P < .05), compared to the control oil which increased LDL-C by only 7.5% compared with baseline.

Most importantly, saury oil exerted similar effects compared to control oil on lowering plasma TG levels, VLDL, and TG-rich lipoprotein particle counts (by ∼16%, 25%, and 35%, respectively; P < .05), and increasing HDL-C and cholesterol efflux capacity (by ∼6% and 8%, respectively; P < .05) compared with baseline.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Saury oil supplementation is well tolerated and has beneficial effects on several cardiovascular parameters, such as LDL particle counts, HDL particle size, and plasma TG levels".

Taken altogether, fish oil may be considered a functional food for the protection of cardiovascular parameters, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
