Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of hypertension, according to studies.
Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure. It is a member of the cluster conditions associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately, 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or 1 in 2 adults in the US have the syndrome.
Bad eating habits, unhealthy lifestyle and certain medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea are some of the risk factors of high blood pressure.
However, some researchers suggested that the prevalence of obesity over the past few decades may have a strong impact on the increased high blood pressure risk in the US.
Dr. Shu-Zhong Jiang and colleagues in examining obesity and the high blood pressure risk wrote, "Obesity is a major risk for essential hypertension, diabetes and another morbidity that contribute to the development of kidney disease because it mainly increases tubular reabsorption to impair pressure natriuresis and cause volume expansion,...".
, "Additionally, obesity causes cardiovascular and renal diseases through several mechanisms including hypertension, hyperglycemia, inflammation, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerosis, which are disorders that can coexist, particularly in the presence of excess visceral fat to cause metabolic syndrome (65) and are characterized by alteration in fat metabolism through lipid accumulation".
The results strongly suggested that obesity not only is associated with hypertension but also is a major contributor to the risk of other chronic diseases.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.
Researchers on finding a herbal remedy for the treatment of hypertension with no side effects examined the honey effect on blood pressure and heart rate.
The study included 50 healthy male subjects, who were given 20 ml of honey to consume, and their systolic SBP, DBP, and HR were measured at different intervals; 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 60 minutes after the intake of honey.
Honey treatment significantly (p = 0.05) decreased SBP from 117.80±0.88 to 110.20±2.14 after 15 minutes of honey intake.
The blood pressure of the honey treatment was maintained as the reading after 30 minutes of honey consumption was 111.33±2.14, and 60 minutes of honey intake was 110.4±2.08.
The findings clearly suggested that honey has a short-term effect in reducing blood pressure in healthy individuals.
In order to reveal more information about honey anti-high blood pressure activity, researchers investigated the honey effect on blood pressure and heart rate in healthy males and females.
The study included 100 healthy male and female participants who were given 20ml honey orally administered. The basal systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR) before injection of honey were taken as the control values.
Diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were measured at 15, 30, and 60 minutes with a digital sphygmomanometer and analog sphygmomanometer as a check.
The results showed that mean SBP decreased significantly in female compared to male at control, after 15, 30 and 60 minutes of oral administration of 20ml of honey.
DBP decreased significantly in female compared to male at control, after 15 minutes and 60 minutes of oral administration of 20ml of honey and HR decreased (p=.05) significantly.
The results indicated that honey has a strong effect in reducing blood pressure in females compared to the male counterpart, probably due to hormone expression.
Taken together, honey may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure, particularly in females, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Onion's #Quercetin Polyuronide Contents Process Anti-Atherogenic Property Associated with A Reduced Risk of CardiovascularDisease, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Atherosclerosis is a condition characterized by the accumulated plaque on the arterial wall. Over time the condition can cause stiffening and hardening of the arteries, leading to cardiovascular disease.
Anti-atherogenic activity is the process of preventing or inhibiting atherogenesis associated with the reduced formation of fatty plaques in the arteries.
In other words, anything, including the use of substances such as herbal remedy that prevents the blockage or narrowing of the arteries is considered atheroprotective effects.
Plaque in the arteries is formed by substances including fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood in the bloodstream. However, most cases of atherosclerosis are also involved in the amount of cholesterol that normally returns to the liver in healthy individuals remaining in the blood due to low levels of good cholesterol (HDL) or overexpression of bad cholesterol (LDL).
In other words, an unhealthy ratio of low and high-density lipoprotein is also one of the major risk factors for atherosclerosis.
The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is any number that is less than 4 (LDL)/ 1 (HDL).
Some researchers suggested by increasing the levels of good cholesterol in the blood, the risk of atherosclerosis can be reduced.
Dr. Feig JE and colleagues wrote, "Pharmacologic agents, such as fibrates and niacin that increase HDL cholesterol levels have been associated with decreased cardiovascular events and beneficial effects on the coronary and carotid arteries".
And, "...potential mechanisms by which HDL may exert these anti-atherogenic effects, namely through its role in reverse cholesterol transport, its effects on endothelial cells, and its anti-inflammatory/antioxidant activities".
The results strongly suggested a healthy diet including nuts, coffee, cocoa, grapes, and berries with high levels of HLD may have a profound effect on the prevention of atherosclerosis.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a closely related to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
In finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the quercetin and polyuronide contents of rapidly dried onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Momiji No. 3) powder (OP) prepared from the outer layers (from second to the fourth scale leaves from the surface) of onion bulbs anti-atherogenic effect.
The study included rats fed a high-fat diet treated by quercetin 4'-glucoside (50%), free quercetin (30%), and quercetin 3,4'-glucoside (20%) as quercetin derivatives in boiling-water extraction.
According to the tested differentiation, in a high-fat diet, Wistar rats, additional OP did not show a significant difference in total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations compared to rats fed a high-fat diet without OP.
However, the atherogenic index (AI) associated with cardiovascular disease risk of Wistar rats fed an OP-added high-fat diet was lower compared to those fed a diet without OP.
Moreover, the incremental elastic modulus (IEM), a measurement of the stiffness of the larger arteries from rats fed the OP-added diet was also significantly lower compared to rats fed by diet without OP.
Additionally, both rat groups were found to exert similar AI and IEM values if the rats fed the diet without OP were allowed spontaneous exercise.
In other words, OP protected the cardio-tissue by exerting an anti-atherogenic effect through other unknown mechanisms associated with regular exercise, without affecting the parameters of cholesterol.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that OP intake is effective for decreasing the risk of arteriosclerosis".
Taken altogether, onion processed with a higher amount of Onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of arteriosclerosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.
In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.
Neurodegenerative disease is the class of condition associated with the progressive loss of neurons occurred mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).
Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slowly lost of neuron in the brain that affects the memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into advanced stage.
According to the statistics, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, and approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.
Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019, and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.
Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia focuses focusing improving dementia symptoms and slowing down the progression of the disease.
Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of the onset of Alzheimer's disease over the past few decades may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet in the US.
Dr. Rollins CPE, the lead scientist wrote, "HFD-induced obesity during adolescence exacerbated brain volume alterations by adult life in the 3xTg mouse model in comparison to control-fed mice and mediated volumetric alterations of select brain regions, such as the hippocampus".
And, "Further, HFD-induced obesity aggravated memory in all mice, lowering certain memory measures of B6129s control mice to the level of 3xTg mice maintained on a CD. Moreover, a decline in the volumetric trajectories of hippocampal regions for all mice was associated with the degree of spatial memory impairments on the MWM.".

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cognitive impairment, researchers examined the neuroprotective potential of Allium cepa (A. cepa, Onion) in aluminum chloride-induced animal model neurotoxicity.
The study included mice-induced neurotoxicity by aluminum chloride (50 mg/kg/day) orally was treated supplemented with different doses of A. cepa hydroethanolic extract for a period of 60 days.
Before the treatment of onion, aluminum chloride-treated mice resulted in significant motor incoordination and memory deficits, observed by the increased oxidative stress and elevated levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and aluminum levels in the brain.
Onion supplement injection in aluminum exposed animals not only significantly improved muscle coordination and memory deficits but also decreased the levels of oxidative stress, AChE, and decreased abnormal aluminum deposition induced by the aluminum chloride.
Decreased vacuolated cytoplasm associated with the death of neurons and pyramidal cells in the hippocampal area of the mice brain caused by toxicity was also reversed by the injection of A. cepa supplementation.
The results strongly suggested that onion processes anti-neuro-toxicity induced cognitive impairment in an animal model.
Dr. Singh T, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote, "significant neuroprotective potential of A. cepa in aluminum-induced neurotoxicity".
Taken together, onion may be considered a neuroprotective remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea Powder Inhibits #Dementia and #CognitiveImpairment, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Green tea injection is associated with reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline, a recent study postulated.
Cognitive impairment is a condition of the decline of memory and thinking skills due to aging considered as an early sign of neurodegenerative diseases.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a piece of ginger will solve the problem.
In a total of 12 elderly nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction, participants who drink green tea powder 2 g/day for 3 months showed a significantly improved cognitive performance and reduced the progression of cognitive dysfunction indicated by the Mini-Mental State Examination Japanese version (MMSE-J) score.
In another study (of Japanese residents aged >60 years from Nakajima, Japan (the Nakajima Project) of 723 participants with normal cognitive function at a baseline survey (2007-2008), 490 completed the follow-up survey in 2011-2013, suggested that the incidence of dementia and cognitive impairment are lower among individuals who consumed green tea 1-6 days per week compared with individuals who did not consume green tea at all.
Additionally, according to the double-blind, randomized controlled study of 39 nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction (four men, 29 women) divided into two groups either with
consumption of 2 g/day of green tea powder (containing 220.2 mg of catechins) or placebo powder (containing 0.0 mg of catechins), green tea treated group showed a significantly reduced cognitive dysfunction in 3 months follow up in compared to placebo.
The efficacy of green tea in decreased progression of cognitive impairment in the short term may be attributed to ameliorated oxidative stress and levels of low-density lipoprotein.
Taking together, Green tea may have the potential to reduce the risk of early-onset and progression of cognitive decline in the aging population, but long term and large amount injection should be taken with care.

#Bromelain Increases the Cytotoxicity of #Cisplatin Significantly in Cancer Treatment, Particularly Peritoneal Mesothelioma, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Peritoneal mesothelioma is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the abdomen (the peritoneum).
Most cases of peritoneal mesothelioma begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the peritoneum, before penetrating into the deeper layers.
At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, patients with peritoneal mesothelioma are asymptomatic.
However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of abdominal pain or swelling due to the larger size tumor pressed on the nearby nerve tissues and blood vessels, changes in bowel habits, feeling of fullness, and night sweat accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, such as unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal discomforts, and loss of appetite.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, compared to other types of cancer mesothelioma is rare, with approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma in the US each year. The asbestos-related mesothelioma only accounts for less than 0.3 percent of all cancer diagnosed in the country.
Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for less than 20 percent of all mesothelioma cases.
Dr. Rodolfo Fonte, the lead scientist in the examination of the risk of asbestos-induced peritoneal mesothelioma in a construction worker, wrote, "Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive asbestos-related malignancy. We present the case of a 65-year-old man who developed recurrent ascites after having been exposed to asbestos in the building industry for > 40 years".
And, "Occupational history and immunohistochemistry are helpful for the correct diagnosis, which, in turn, is important in relation to prognosis and treatment (adoption of new integrated procedures that seem to promise prolonged survival and increased quality of life), and in relation to medico-legal issues and occupation-related compensation claims following asbestos exposure".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, researchers examined the effects of Bromelain (cysteine proteinase) effects on Mucin 1 (MUC1), a glycosylation-dependent protein that confers tumors with invasiveness, metastasis, and chemoresistance.
In the study in which researchers compared the efficacy with the application of various concentrations of bromelain and after 4 and 72 h and combinations of bromelain and cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin or 5-FU) at 72 h, MUC1-expressing MPM cell lines found that bromelain increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin significantly in cell lines.
Compared to the aforementioned inhibition, combining fluorouracil with bromelain did not show a significant increase in cytotoxicity.
In other words, bromelain improves the chemotherapy depending totally on the types of drugs used for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma.
Furthermore, bromelain used alone also showed a significant effect in inducing cell death by apoptosis and autophagy.
In pancreatic and breast cancer cells, injection of bromelain also adversely affected the viability of MUC1 expressing on both cell lines.
Based on the findings, Bromelain used alone or combined with other chemo drugs might have a strong effect on the barrier function of MUC1.
Collectively, bromelain inhibited the progression and proliferation of peritoneal mesothelioma by blocking the activity of the gene MUC1.
Dr. Pillai K, the lead scientist said, "Current evidence indicates that bromelain may have the potential of being developed into an effective anticancer agent for MPM".
Taken together, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry Does Prevent UTI Occurence in #MultipleSclerosis (MS) Patients with #UrinaryDisorders, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion on body tissues
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, and overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.
The most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, and pain at the site of infection.
Urinary tract infection (UTIs) mostly occur in women is an infection that affects the bladder and urethra caused mostly by bacterial strains Escherichia coli (E. coli), commonly found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
UTIs have been found to limit the function of the bladder and induce kidney infection.
The most common symptoms of urinary infection are the persistent urge to urinate, urinary burning sensation, cloudy urine, and smelly urine.
In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine and bladder and pelvic pain.
The most common risk factors for urinary tract infection are gender, females are more like to have UTI comapred to males, sexual activity, use of birth control, and menopausal women.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) casued by the immune system attacking the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers.
MS causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.
SHARON BEGLEY in examining the genetic preposition involved in MS wrote, " A newly discovered genetic mutation gives people who carry it a whopping 70 percent chance of developing multiple sclerosis, potentially opening the way toward new therapies for a debilitating neurological disorder whose ultimate cause has stumped researchers for decades".
The author continued, "The 70 percent chance of developing MS compares to a 0.1 percent risk in the general population, and the 100 or so previously known genetic variants increase the chance of MS to only about 0.3 percent at most, with no single gene packing much of a punch".
In other words, people having certain genes inherited from their parents are at a substantial risk of MS developing comapred to people who do not.
According to the statistics, in 2010/2011, approximately 93,500 Canadians were diagnosed with the disease, or 290 cases per 100,000 population. Believe it or not, MS is the most prevalent in Canada comapred to other parts of the world.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the prevention of urinary infections, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extract (CE) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients suffering from urinary disorders.
The prospective, double-blind study included a total of 171 adult MS outpatients with urinary disorders presenting at eight centers that received either cranberry extract ((36 mg proanthocyanidins per day) or matching placebo for a year.
According to the results of the follow-up, the was no difference between cranberry and placebo).
In other words, there was no difference in time to the first symptomatic UTI distribution across 1 year, with an estimated hazard ratio of 0.99, 95% CI [0.61, 1.60] (p = 0.97).
Furthermore, the secondary endpoints and tolerance also did not differ between groups.
Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Taking cranberry extract versus placebo twice a day did not prevent UTI occurrence in MS patients with urinary disorders".
Taken altogether, cranberry can not be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of urinary disorders in MS patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Bilberry #Extract (Bilberon-25) Inhibits #SkinDiseases Involving Pruritic Symptoms, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Contact dermatitis is a skin condition with symptoms of a red, itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an immune overreaction against contact allergens.
Many chemicals and nonchemical substances have been found to induce such abnormal reactions, including cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry, and plants.
Most cases of contact dermatitis are nonlife-threatening, however, the condition can induce certain discomforts, particularly in people with an allergic reaction to other conditions.
Contact dermatitis can be healed within a week or 2. The condition can be preventable if the cause is identified.
Besides the common symptoms of a red, itchy rash on the skin, some people may experience more serious symptoms including crusting swelling, burning, or tender skin.
Dr. Imbesi S, the lead scientist in the explanation of the immune involvement of allergic contact dermatitis wrote, " an inflammatory skin condition due to pro-inflammatory and toxic factors able to activate the skin innate immunity (irritant contact dermatitis) or caused by a T-cell- mediated hypersensitivity reaction (allergic contact dermatitis)".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic allergic contact dermatitis with no side effects, researchers examined the bilberry extract (Bilberon-25) in the alleviation of pruritus in a mouse model of chronic allergic contact dermatitis.
The study involved BALB/c mice with chronic allergic contact dermatitis induced by 3 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) followed by the administration of Bilberon-25 orally for 3 weeks after sensitization with TNCB.
During the experiment, administered Bilberon-25 orally significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increase in scratching behavior, compared to that of dexamethasone.
Both Bilberon-25 and dexamethasone inhibited the ear swelling.
Additional differentiation of the Bilberon-25 efficacy, the action of the herbal remedy inhibited symptoms of chronic allergic contact dermatitis by alleviating T helper cell type 2 (Th2) predominance of the lesional skin.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Anthocyanins from bilberry might be beneficial for the treatment of chronic pruritus which can occur in patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis".
In order to reveal more information about anthocyanin activity against chronic allergic contact dermatitis, researchers at the Chiba Univ compared the anti-pruritic effect of anthocyanin-rich quality-controlled bilberry extract and anthocyanidin-rich degraded extract in a mouse model of allergic contact dermatitis.
Once again, BALB/c mice with allergic contact dermatitis induced by 4 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) following by administration of Bilberon-25 orally for 4 weeks.
Compared with nonheated Bilberon-25, the proportion of anthocyanins in heated Bilberon-25 decreased, and the proportion of anthocyanidins was increased in a heated-time-dependent manner.
Treatment with non-heated Bilberon-25 significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increased scratching behavior, whereas treatment with 2 h-heated Bilberon-25 did not.
Particularly, 300 μg/mL nonheated Bilberon-25 showed significant inhibition of degranulation in RBL-2H3 mast cells.
The results suggested that the anthocyanin-rich but not anthocyanidin-rich bilberry extract inhibited skin diseases involving pruritic symptoms, such as chronic allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and rhinitis.
Taken altogether, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of symptoms in patients with chronic allergic contact dermatitis, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
