#Alcohol (Jiu Danggui, JDG) and #Charred in #Angelica Sinensis Inhibit Blood Stasis Syndrome (BSS), Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Blood is a body fluid that delivers necessary nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from those same cells.

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.

The circulatory or cardiovascular system delivers nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body, consisting of the heart and the blood vessels in the body.

More precisely, there are 2 types of large vessel
* The arteries carry blood away from the heart.

*The veins carry the blood back to the heart.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart and staying high over time, damaging the body in many ways.

Most cases of heart dysfunction are associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle, leading to reduced blood flow that facilitates heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body.

Heart disease is a condition in which the heart's inner lining of blood vessels is served damaged which can impede the function of transportation of oxygen and nutrition of the heart to other cells and organs in the body.

Every day, more than 2,000 Americans die as a result of heart disease. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

Believe it or not, 1 in 4 women in the US dies from heart disease and coronary heart disease.

The most common heart diseases associated with blood circulation are
* Heart diseases are affected by the arteries to the heart, such as coronary heart disease.
which is a condition of blockage of blood flow in the arteries, as a result of hardening arterial wall, cholesterol building up, chemicals, such as cadmium clog up arteries, etc. causes of narrowing coronary arteries.

* Heart diseases are affected by heart valve function in regulating blood flow such as valvular heart disease.

According to the statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, approximately 610,000 people die of heart disease every year.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases, scientists examined the alcohol (Jiu Danggui, JDG) and charred DG are the main processed products of Angelica sinensis (Danggui, DG) on blood stasis syndrome (BSS).

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the analysis of the results of hemorheology, coagulation function parameters and metabolomics,
* In the BSS model, JD demonstrated the best DGPP intervention in significant relief of rats' BSS.

* DGPP intervention showed different degrees of reverse effect on these metabolites associated with the expression of the syndrome in the tested model, and

* JDG was found to be the most effective owing to the extensive regulation effect on differential metabolites.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This study provides a reference for understanding the pathological mechanism of BSS and the mechanism of DGPPs, which lays a theoretical foundation for the rational use of DGPPs in clinical practice".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of blood stasis syndrome (BSS), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel Powder, Extract, and Oil Inhibit Parameters Associated with #Nephrotoxicity through Its Antioxidant Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect of eliminating excess water and toxins from our body, some scientists suggested.

Diuresis is a medicine with the function of stimulating the increased production of urine.

Detoxification is a process of eliminating toxin accumulation from our body. In some cases, the function may only target some specific organs, such as kidneys, liver,..... and lungs.

According to traditional medicine, detoxification is a necessary process to enhance and optimize the functions of our body by cleansing away substances that may reduce or cause harm to our body organs and tissue.

According to the Tao of Wellness in the address of the importance of detoxification in Traditional Chinese Medicine wrote, " Our body is automatically programmed to cleanse itself daily. However, with our fast-paced modern lifestyle and exposure to an increasing number of harmful and toxic substances, our body’s natural cleansing ability has become overworked and compromised" and "Many signs and symptoms attributed to stress are now being linked to exposure from harmful substances such as PCBs, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and mercury in food and liquids as well as dioxins and formaldehyde in the air".

Truly, harmful and toxic substances not removed from our bodies may have substantially negative implications to cause many serious illnesses, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases,..... and reproductive ailments.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb or food has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In an animal model, according to John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. in the evaluation of the re-toxic effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare var dulce (D.C) root, researchers found that application of the extract exerts a significant activity in flushing out of excess water and toxin from the body through increased kidney function in secretion of fluids.

The result of these properties was observed by an increase in urine flow and urinary sodium excretion.

The efficacy in the cleansing body was also found linearly in dose dose-dependent manner.

Continuously, in further examination of the efficacy of fennel powder, extract, and oil on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity through a study of a total of 35 adult female Sprague Dawley rats classified into five groups with the first group kept on the standard diet all over the period of the experiment. and the other groups administered gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day for 7 days i.p), followed by either control (+ve) group or treated groups with fennel powder, extract, and oil for 45 days, at the end of the study, researchers found that

* The injected gentamicin group served as control and exhibited strong nephrotoxicity manifested by increasing levels of kidney function indicator, serum nitric oxide (NO), and kidney malondialde(MDA) however, this group of rats also exerted a significant decrease in weight gain.

Increased expression of serum nitric oxide (NO) and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of severe oxidative stress caused by an imbalanced ratio of ROS and antioxidants in the host.

* Gentamicin groups treated with fennel powder, extract, and oil demonstrated an improved level of urea and uric acid in comparison to control (+ve) and displayed an improvement of antioxidant enzymes, serum superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, and glutathione transferase (GST) and decrease of serum NO in compared to control (+ve) group.

These results addressed the important antioxidant effect of fennel extracts.

Furthermore, the applications not only inhibited the levels of free radicals and their' chain reactive activities but also stimulated the production of antioxidants found in the host tissue.

* Moreover, the group treated with fennel oil restored the normal values of kidney antioxidant enzymes compared with the normal group and other treatment groups.

Dr. Soheir Ahamed Al-Masri, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "Fennel powder, extract, and oil have a potent antioxidant and ameliorate in rats gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats".

Clearly, fennel oil exhibited the greatest effect in stimulating kidney function to detox the body toxins through increased secretion of urine compared to other experimental groups.

The results of this study clearly indicate that fennel powder, extract, and oil are potent antioxidants that ameliorate the levels of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.

Interestingly, in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) treated with either water extract of Marrubium vulgare L. or Foeniculum vulgare L. in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), researchers showed that application of fennel water extract reduces hypertension through Foeniculum increased water, sodium, and potassium excretion in compared to no effect of Marrubium treated group.

Additionally, in comparison to Marrubium extract reduced hypertension through inhibited contractile responses, fennel restored the normal; blood pressure by increased urine secretion and ameliorated the overexpression of ROS and increased antioxidant status in the host.

Surely, one can say that Foeniculum acts mainly as a diuretic and a natriuretic while Marrubium displays vascular relaxant activity.

Taken together, fennel and its extracts may be considered a kidney-detoxed functional food in getting rid of body toxins through its diuretic activities.

#Lyophilized Table #Beet and #Carrot Powder Inhibits Proteins Associated with a Decreased Risk of #FattyLiverDiseases, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is the early stage of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver, other than excessive use of alcohol.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is asymptomatic until the condition develops into cirrhosis, the condition that causes advanced liver scars and reduces the performance of the liver.

In other words, if more than 5% – 10% percent of your liver’s weight is fat, you have a fatty liver (steatosis).

According to the statistics, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of liver disease affecting 100 million people in the US. Out of that number, approximately 20% of people have NASH.

Medical conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes are some of the metabolic risk factors that have been found to induce the development of NASH.

As of today, there is no effective treatment for NASH. Depending on the condition people with overweight or obese are recommended to lose weight. The aim of medical treatment is to reduce the symptoms and delay the progression of the condition and improve the quality of life.

Out of many prevalent factors that cause the onset of NASH, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades induced a high percentage of the overweight and obese population may be the major culprit associated with the rise of NASH.

Dr. Jensen VS, the lead scientist wrote, "Hepatic dysfunction and inflammation were confirmed in HFD-fed rats by elevated levels of hepatic MCP-1 (p < 0.0001), TNF-alpha (p < 0.001) and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate (p < 0.0001), and in NASH-fed rats by elevated levels of hepatic MCP-1 (p < 0.01), increased hepatic macrophage infiltration (p < 0.001), and higher plasma levels of alanine aminotransferase (p < 0.0001) aspartate aminotransferase (p < 0.05), haptoglobin (p < 0.001) and TIMP-1 (p < 0.01) compared to Control".

And, " dietary fat and cholesterol are the primary drivers of NAFLD development and progression in rats, while fructose mostly exerts its effect on the circulating lipid pool".

Betaxanthins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.

In finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of liver disease, researchers examined the protecting effects of bioactive agents of the lyophilized table beet and carrot powder on fatty liver.

The shortened-term study included male Wistar rats fed with chow with or without high fat (2% cholesterol, 0.5% cholic acid, 20% sunflower oil) and treated with 0.1 or 1 g/bwkg/day natural product for ten days parallel with the feedings.

Based on the tested analysis, compared to other feedings, the higher dose of the natural product better decreased the induced free radical reactions, cyclooxygenase-2, and proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in normal and fatty liver tissues.

More precisely, the natural treatment of beet and carrot powder inhibited the liver oxidative stress by inhibiting the inflammatory expression without causing significant changes in all global antioxidant parameters.

However, the antioxidant activity of mobilized methyl group concentrations associated with liver stress also increased in fatty liver tissues.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Beet and carrot proved to be a "functional food" in rats with alimentary fat-induced fatty liver. It cannot be ruled out that this beneficial effect may have clinical relevance".

Taken together, beet and carrot may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of fatty liver disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Sinigrin Inhibits Gene Expression Associated with the Onset of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound against diseases associated with chronic inflammation, according to studies.

Acute inflammation that lasts a day or 2 mostly associated with a proinflammatory response to tissue injury, usually appearing within minutes or hours, depending on the severity of the damage.

In other words, in the acute phase of inflammation, the immune system response of the macrophages stimulates the process of coagulation to cover the wound or injury and the production of inflammatory cytokines to destroy the foreign pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or injury.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation are pain, redness, loss of function, swelling, and heat.

In the acute phase of inflammation, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines that protect our body against foreign invasion may damage the nearby tissues and death of the healthy cells, leading to the abnormal formation of scars.

Chronic inflammation is a medical condition caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all pathogens in the acute phase of inflammation, leading to the compromise of the immune system.

Chronic inflammation is a leading cause of various types of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis.

Unlike the symptoms in acute inflammation, symptoms of chronic inflammation are totally depending on the type of disease and location of the inflammation, including fatigue and unintended weight loss and loss of appetite in cancer, chest pain in chronic lung disease, and joint pain in RA.

In RAW 264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner, sinigrin inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines including nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of COX-2 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

Injection of sinigrin significantly suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 by suppressing the protein in the cellular response to oxidative stress and stimuli.

In additional analysis, sinigrin also processed a significant effect in inhibiting gene expression involved in the mediation of innate immunity and inflammatory responses.

Dr. Lee HW, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report, " Our findings also provide evidence that the pharmacological modulation of sinigrin could have an anti-inflammatory effect".

In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation, AITC protected the microglial cells against neuroinflammation by inhibiting the cellular response against oxidative stress-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

In other words, AITC protects neuroblastoma cells by controlling with JNK/NF-κB/TNF-α cross-linking associated with the expression of the gene in inducing apoptosis.

Dr. Subedi L, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "These findings provide novel insights into the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of AITC on microglial cells, which may have clinical significance in neurodegeneration".

Taken together, sinigrin may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

#Cranberry #Extract Inhibits Parameters Associated with Metabolic Profiles in the Induction of #Obesity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

A metabolic profile is a tool to diagnose metabolic disease.
A metabolic disease is a group of medical conditions that disrupt normal cell metabolism in converting food to energy.

The most common causes of metabolic disease are genetic prepositions. However, people with the mutated gene remain healthy for years.

Interestingly, cellular stress and family history have been found to be a major cause of the initiation of the symptoms of metabolic disease, epidemiologically.

As of today, there is no effective treatment for metabolic disease. Some children with the metabolic disease diagnosed at an early age may respond very well. However, many do not respond well to therapy and cause severe problems, despite the early diagnosis.

Dr. Ingraham RH, the lead scientist at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine wrote, "Except in cases of gross mismanagement, these profiles do not offer a "quick fix." In many of the reported cases in which diagnosis of herd problems was attributed to the metabolic profile, the clinician should have been able to identify the problem before the profile was conducted".

According to statistics, metabolic disease is uncommon in the US. Metabolic disorders affect approximately 1 in 1,000 individuals.

People who are overweight and obesity and physical inactivity and have a condition of insulin resistance are most likely to have metabolic disease.

According to the statistics, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35%. From 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, the condition increased from 25.3% to 34.2%.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome, some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the major culprit in inducing the rise of the metabolic syndrome, globally.

Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the bloodstream. Hypertension a member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately, 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or 1 in 2 adults in the US have the syndrome.

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.
The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,

In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, inclduing over 650 million who were obese worldwide.

Dr. Shu-Zhong Jiang, the lead scientist wrote in the examination of the metabolic profile ofthe obese, "There are currently over 1.9 billion people who are obese or overweight, leading to a rise in related health complications, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, and neurodegeneration".

And, "The finding that obesity and metabolic disorder are accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation has fundamentally changed our view of the underlying causes and progression of obesity and metabolic syndrome".

The results strongly suggested that obese subjects are at an increased risk of metabolic disease.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extract (CE) on the improvement of lipid dysfunction in HFD-induced obesity in an animal model.

The study included postnatal day 120 (PN120), male Wistar rats assigned into two groups: (1) SD (n = 36) fed with a standard diet and (2) HFD (n = 36), fed with a diet containing 44.5% (35.2% from lard) energy from fat.

According to the results from rats 12 animals from SD and HFD groups were killed at PN150 and others subdivided into four groups (n = 12/group): animals that received 200 mg/kg cranberry extract (SD CE, HFD CE) gavage/daily/30 days or water (SD, HFD) killed at PN180, HFD group showed higher body mass and visceral fat, cholesterol,l, and triglyceride contents.

Furthermore, the HFD group demonstrated a significantly higher lipid peroxidation in plasma and tissues and higher protein carbonylation in the liver and adipose tissue compared to the SD group.

The application of CE not only inhibited the aforementioned parameters induced by a high-fat diet but also protected the liver tissues by lowering lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation and accumulation of liver fat without completely reversing the adiposity.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "cranberry extract improved the metabolic profile and reduced oxidative damage and steatosis in HFD-fed rats, which suggests that it can help manage obesity-related disorders".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the metabolic profile of obesity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Quercetin Isolated from #Onion Inhibits Matrix and Proteins Associated with the Onset of #OralCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Oral cancer is a medical condition of malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva), and the roof of the mouth (palate).

The most common types of oral cancer are
* Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of oral cancer accounting for over 90% of all cases and arises from the squamous cell layer in the lining of the oral cavity and oropharynx.

* Verrucous carcinoma
The low-grade and rarely spread verrucous carcinoma accounted for only approximately 5% of all cases. Cancer can spread deeply into the surrounding tissue.

* Minor salivary gland cancers
The cancer is originated from the salivary gland and accounted for less than 1% of all cases.

According to the statistics, approximately, 53,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer in 2019.

The disease also causes the death of over 9,750 patients, roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day.

The grades of oral cancer are depending on the tendency to spread. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.

The 5-year survival rate of the localized stage of oral cancer is 84%. However, If cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes, the overall 5-year survival rate is 65%.

The survival rate is even lower (39%) If cancer has spread to a distant part of the body,

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of oral cancer, researchers investigated the potential effects of quercetin, a principal flavonoid compound in onions' anti-oral cancer activities.

On SAS human oral cancer cells, quercetin significantly reduced wound closure of SAS cells in culture plates after 12- and 24-h treatments.

Quercetin inhibits the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 that promotes cancer cell growth and proliferation and (MMP)-9 is involved in cancer cell angiogenesis and metastasis.

Additionally, quercetin also inhibited the proteins associated with the promotion of forming new blood vessels in SAS human oral cancer cells.

Furthermore, quercetin also blocked the expression of enzymes associated with the pathogenesis of many solid tumors through its inflammatory activation.
Moreover, proteins involved in cellular interactions with the extracellular matrix that cause tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis were also inhibited by the injection of quercetin.

More importantly, quercetin also exhibited the gene expression of tumor suppression such as P53 and apoptosis.

In other words, quercetin protects the oral cells by blocking the proteins involved in the signaling expression of tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis such as Ras homolog gene family, member A (RhoA), and protein kinase C (PKC).

Taken together, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
