#Cranberry In the Promotion of #CardiometabolicHealth, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiometabolic risk is a condition that estimates the possibility of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease and diabetes mellitus.

Cardioprotection is a process including the use of substances associated with the preservation of the function and viability of cardiac muscle tissue by the reintroduction of oxygenic blood flow back to the tissues.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions caused by the underlying damage of blood vessels and the heart.

More precisely, CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack), or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption,

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in the US live with some form of cardiovascular disease. The condition has also been found to cause the death of about 2,200 people a day.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.

Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurs in the brain, it will cause the death of the brain cells, leading to stroke.

However, if the reduced blood flow occurs in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.

The most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium, and other chemical substances in the artery

Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin in the bloodstream. or insulins in the bloodstream are not used properly to convert glucose to energy.

Epidemiologically, diabetes is caused by either the beta cells in the pancreas died-off or insulin receptors with a function that uses insulin to convert glucose to energy clogged up by fat or cholesterol.

In a healthy individual, after eating, the rise of blood glucose triggers the production of insulin by the pancreas into bloodstream After you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises. This rise in glucose triggers your pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream that travels through the blood to your body's cells before converting glucose into energy or storing it for use later.

In other words, insulin is released by the pancreas joints with the Insulin receptors on the outer part of a cell that binds insulin in the blood to convert glucose to energy.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cardiometabolic health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function and cardiometabolic risk factors.

In cardiometabolic health, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites improved the
serum lipid profiles reduced the levels of blood pressure.

Furthermore, the endothelial functions associated with vascular relaxation contraction, and glucoregulation are involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism. and a variety of biomarkers associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in the induction of CVD and diabetes were also inhibited by the cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These results warrant further research, particularly studies dedicated to the elucidation of dose-response relations, pharmacokinetic/metabolomics profiles, and relevant biomarkers of action with the use of fully characterized cranberry products.".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of cardiometabolic health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Serum Levels of #Carotenoid Are Not Associated with the Risk of #SkinCancer, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The skin is a large outer layer organ of the human body that not only protects the internal tissues and organ against the invasion of foreign pathogens but also serve as the third detoxified organ after the liver and kidney.

Furthermore, the skin also plays an essential role in regulating body temperature and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold.

The skin contains 3 layers
* The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin.

* The dermis, beneath the epidermis.

* The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis).

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells and often detected at an early stage.

According to the statistics, every year, approximately 4.3 million cases of basal cell cancer (BCC) are diagnosed in the U.S. compared to over 1 million cases of Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) which is the second most common form of skin cancer.

There are three most common skin cancers, depending on the cancer cells originated
* Basal cell cancer (BCC)
Basal cell cancer is the most common type of skin cancer caused by abnormal growth of the cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis, accounting for more than 90% of all skin cancer in the U.S. Basal cell cancer rarely spreads and kills but can cause significant destruction and disfigurement to the affected skin area.

* Squamous cell cancer
Squamous cell cancer arises from the uncontrolled multiplication of transformed malignant cells in the middle layer of the epidermis.

*Melanoma
Melanoma, a kind of skin cancer but less common than other skin cancers is a result of malignancy of melanocytes, which produce dark pigment for your skin.

Epidemiologically, long-term exposure to sunlight, family history, age, gender, chemical exposure, exposure to radiation, smoking, and history of sunburns are some prevalent factors associated with the risk of the disease.

Carotenoids are a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

In concern to the overexpression of carotenoids enhancing the risk of skin cancer, researchers investigated the associations of several carotenoids and alpha-tocopherol with the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer.

The study included serum carotenoids and alpha-tocopherol collected at baseline from 302 subjects who had at least two BCCs in the 5 years prior to randomization in the Isotretinoin-Basal Cell Carcinoma Prevention Trial.

During 5 years of follow-up, 70 subjects did not develop nonmelanoma skin cancer, 221 developed a BCC, and 85 developed a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

In chemical analysis, researchers found that* Serum levels of any of the carotenoids measured or to alpha-tocopherol are not associated with the risk of developing a subsequent BCC.

* Furthermore, serum levels of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, and alpha-tocopherol found in carotenoids also were not independently related to the risk of a subsequent SCC.

* However, serum lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-cryptoxanthin were positively related to SCC risk with a risk ratio for subjects in the highest versus lowest tertiles of these micronutrients were 1.63.

In other words, overexpression of lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-cryptoxanthin increased the risk SCC compared to no risk of carotenoids.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Additional research is needed on the relationship of carotenoids to SCC risk in the general population and in subsets of the population who are at increased risk".

Taken together, dietary carotenoids do not increase the risk of skin cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Turmeric's #Curcumin Nanoformulations Inhobit Pathways and Receptors Associated with the Risk of #ColorectalCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The colorectum including the large intestine and the rectum is the second part of the digestive system involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and the breaking down of certain materials in the feces into substances some of which are reabsorbed and reused by the body.
Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon or rectum.

Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon and rectum, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferation.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progresses cancer in a predictable way.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.

In 2019, approximately 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.

The 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%. Sadly, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

The exact causes of colorectal cancer are unknown. Epidemiologically, the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the disease are
* Age
The disease is more common in people over the age of 50. Regular colonoscopy after the age of 50 is valuable to detect the disease in the early stage.

* Bowl inflammatory diseases
A prolonged period of inflammatory diseases of the colon, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, can increase your risk of colon cancer due to long term inflammation of the lining of the colon.

* Family History of colorectal cancer
People with parents, siblings, children who have had colorectal cancer are more likely to develop colon cancer.

* Inherited Syndromes
Genetic syndromes passed through generations can increase the risk of developing colon cancer.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned prevalent factors have never developed colorectal cancer.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin nanoformulations anti-cancer activity by overcoming the limitations of the compound.

Application of the nanoformulations not only displayed a greater anticancer activity compared to free curcumin but also extended at the same time non-toxic to the normal cells.

Furthermore, curcumin also demonstrated a strong colorectal cancer effect in the regulation of multiple cell signaling pathways associated with tumor growth and anti-apoptosis.

Moreover, curcumin also promoted the expression of tumor suppressor gene which is crucial in cancer development and progression.

The joint study led by the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in the examination of curcumin, a bioactive substance originating from turmeric root anticancer properties showed that curcumin inhibited the expression of a gene associated with involved in tumor initiation and progression. In other words, through inhibition of this gene, curcumin reduced the risk of tumor metastasis.

Additionally, by inhibiting the insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor curcumin showed a greater decrease in the proliferation and migration of chemoresistant colorectal cancer cells.

Based on the results, Dr. Hosseini SA, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest the possible therapeutic effects of curcumin in adjuvant therapy in metastatic colorectal cancer".

Taken together, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Brassica rapa Inhibits Liver Oxidativestress Markers and Pathways Associated with the Onset of #Liverdieases, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction of partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

The most common types of liver disease in the US are
* Hepatitis C (26%) is a liver disease caused by liver inflammation caused by viral Hepatitis C, leading to irreversible liver scars. Over time, the condition can also induce liver cancer.

* Alcoholic liver disease (21%) is a condition that caused long-term excessive alcohol drinking. It is known that years of alcohol abuse can cause the liver to become inflamed and swollen. Over time, it has been found to induce the formation of liver scars, known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the final stage of liver disease.

* Hepatitis C plus alcoholic liver disease (15%).

* Cryptogenic causes (18%) is a condition with no apparent underlying reason. However, most researchers suggested that many cases of cryptogenic cirrhosis are likely caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition of fat accumulated in the liver.

* Hepatitis B and D (15%) are liver diseases caused by liver inflammation caused by viral Hepatitis C, leading to irreversible liver scars. Over time, the condition can also induce liver cancer.

Human toxicity is a general term that refers to any substance which causes harm to human health if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin.

Liver toxicity is a process that causes liver damage by reducing the function of the liver.

Liver oxidative stress caused by a toxic substance such as an overdose of the supplement has been found to constitute most cases of acute liver damage.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the hepatoprotective effects of B. Rapa polysaccharides (BRPs) on acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) in mice.

According to the results of Mice treated with CCl4 after the oral administration of BRPs (55, 110, and 220 mg/kg) or bifendate (100 mg/kg) for 7 days,

* BRP pre-treatment significantly decreased the enzymatic activities of liver oxidative stress markers ALT, ALP, and AST in the serum, by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD and GSH-Px in the liver and reduced the MDA concentration in the liver.

* BRPs alleviated hepatocyte injury and markedly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6.

* Furthermore, BRPs downregulated the CCl4 -induced hepatic tissue expression of caspase-3 involved in cell apoptosis.

* Moreover, BRPs inhibited the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway associated with the inhibition of cell division and stimulation of inflammation in a dose-dependent manner in the liver.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " BRPs exert hepatoprotective effect against the CCl4 -induced liver injury via modulating the apoptotic and inflammatory responses and downregulating the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway".

Taken together, Brassica rapa may be considered supplementation for the prevention of acute liver damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cocoa Polyphenol Extracts Alone or Combined with Beta-Sitosterol Process Antiproliferative Effects in Cancers, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer cell proliferation is the rapid reproduction of invasive cells in malignant tumors.
In other words, instead of dividing the number of times before replacing it with new cells, the cancer cells can divide indefinitely.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ, caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or specific organ in the body due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Anti-proliferative activity is the process of inhibiting cell growth and antiproliferative effects on tumor cells.

The cocoa bean or simply cocoa is the dried and fully fermented seed of Theobroma cacao, which appeared in different cultures worldwide for hundreds of years, particularly in many ancient South American countries.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the inhibitory effect of different cocoa polyphenol extracts, alone or combined with beta-sitosterol, on two human prostate cancer cell lines (nonmetastatic 22Rv1 cells and metastatic DU145 cells) and a normal human prostate cell line (RWEP-1).

According to the experimental analysis of cells treated independently with five products from 1 to 72 h: (1/) synthetic beta-sitosterol, (2/) a cocoa polyphenols extract supplemented with beta-sitosterol, (3/) three different cocoa polyphenols extracts naturally containing beta-sitosterol, at the highest tested concentration, cocoa polyphenols extracts induced a complete inhibition of growth of metastatic and nonmetastatic cancer cell lines.

Furthermore, cocoa polyphenol extracts alone were more active against local cancer cells than against metastatic cells,.

However, at the highest tested concentration, cocoa polyphenol extract alone is not effective on normal prostate cell lines.

On the other hand, beta-sitosterol induced low growth inhibition of both cancer cell lines, compared to cocoa polyphenols extracts which are significantly more active and showed strong and fast inhibition of cell growth than beta-sitosterol alone.

There is no synergy or addition that was observed when beta-sitosterol was tested together with the cocoa polyphenols extract.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Our results show that cocoa polyphenols extracts have an antiproliferative effect on prostate cancer cell growth but not on normal cells, at the highest tested concentration".

Taken together, beta-sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Sulforaphane (SFN) Found in #CruciferousVegetables Reduce the Risk of #CardiovascularDiseases (CVD) and #Cancer, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of disease.
In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Cardiovascular diseases are chronic diseases that refer to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world. According to statistics, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015.

In other words, anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, which causes damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

Hyperlipidemia and hypertension are the risk factors of the diseases.

According to the statistics cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware that heart disease is such a risk for them, according to Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article Cardiovascular Health.

According to statistics, heart disease is the second leading cause of death, claiming more than 48,000 lives every year.in Canada.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

In finding a potential remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers the effect of sulforaphane against cardiovascular disease via Nrf2 activation.

According to the results of the experiment,
* Sulforaphane (SFN) is an ITC that exerted anticancer activity in both in vivo and epidemiological studies.
* SFN demonstrated strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in CVD.

* SFN-activated NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) that serves as a defense mechanism against oxidative stress and electrophilic toxicants by inducing more than a hundred cytoprotective proteins, including antioxidants and phase II detoxifying enzymes.

Based on the results, researchers said, "the evidence from clinical studies and animal experiments relating to the potential mechanisms by which SFN modulates Nrf2 activation and protects against CVD".

Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of CVD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#PrudentPattern and #VegetarianDietaryPattern Inhibit #Westerndiet in InducingThe Risk of #MetabolicSyndrome, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The Western pattern diet or typical American diet is a modern dietary pattern associated with a high intake of processed foods, red meat, processed meat, fried and refined foods, and high sugar.

The Western pattern diet has also been found to induce chronic diseases. Dr. Hariharan D, the lead scientist wrote, "Characteristics of the Western diet that fueled the obesity epidemic may also impact kidney disease incidence and progression. Enlarging portion sizes over the past half-century have been accompanied by increased intake of protein, sodium, and processed foods while consumption of fruits and vegetables has declined".

And, ", the Western diet, characterized by high intake of red meat, animal fat, sweets, and desserts and low intake of fresh fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy products, increases risk of chronic diseases".

The results clearly suggested, that if you are following a traditional diet with high fruits and vegetables and fewer processed food, saturated and trans fat, and red meat accompanied by moderate exercise daily, you are at a substantially decreased risk of chronic disease, compared to those who follow the Western diet.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

In other words, if you process 3 of the aforementioned conditions, you are at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, most people with metabolic syndrome have never developed
CVD and diabetes.

Other than high blood glucose, most patients with metabolic conditions are asymptomatic.

Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, obesity, medical conditions such as diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome are the most common risk factors found in patients with the syndrome.

Green peas are a species of Pisum Sativum belonging to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalayas Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

In finding a potent ingredient for the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, researchers investigated the association between major dietary patterns and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance.

The cross-sectional study included a total of 425 subjects 35 to 55 years of age. According to the returned food-frequency questionnaire from participants,

* The Western pattern with a high in sweets, butter, soda, mayonnaise, sugar, cookies, the tail of a lamb, hydrogenated fat, and eggs was associated with greater odds of having increased triacylglycerol (odds ratio 1.76, 95% confidence interval 1.01-3.07) and blood pressure (odds ratio 2.62, 95% confidence interval 1.32-5.23).

* The prudent pattern with a high in fish, peas, honey, nuts, juice, dry fruits, vegetable oil, liver and organic meat, and coconuts and low in hydrogenated fat and non-leafy vegetables was associated with a prevalence of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (odds ratio 0.55, 95% confidence interval 0.31-0.96).

* The vegetarian dietary pattern was inversely associated with a risk of an abnormal fasting blood glucose level (odds ratio 2.26, 95% confidence interval 1.25-4.06).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Major dietary patterns were significantly associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome".

Taken together, People who follow the Western diet are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes comapred to other dietary patterns.
