#Phytochemical #Beetroot Extract Normalizes Your High Blood Pressure Induced by Dexamethasone, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension is a medical condition caused by abnormally high pressure that presses against the wall of the arteries, affecting the heart's function in pumping blood to the body.

Hypertension is a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome that facilitates the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes

Epidemiologically, uncontrolled high blood pressure has been found to induce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Most patients with high blood pressure are asymptomatic. However, the long-term elevated force of the blood against your artery walls may result in symptoms of headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, early signs of heart disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 75 million American adults (32%) have high blood pressure. In other words, 1 in every 3 American adults is affected by high blood pressure.

Believe it or not, the actual numbers of high blood pressure are substantially higher if people with the stage of prehypertension are also taken into account.

Sadly, only half of the people with high blood pressure in the US are under control.

There are 2 types of hypertension, including primary hypertension which takes years to develop, and secondary hypertension associated with other medical conditions, such as kidney and thyroid disease.

Out of many prevalent factors, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a direct implication on the onset of hypertension in American adults.

Dr.Dixon W. Wilde, the lead scientist wrote, "Dietary fat contributes to the elevation of blood pressure and increases the risk of stroke and coronary artery disease".

And, "an elevation of plasma FAs may contribute to the development of hypertension via a process involving the elevation of Ca2+ current density and alteration of channel kinetics in the vascular smooth muscle membrane".

The results strongly suggested the high-fat diet-induced elevated FAs associated with the alternation of vascular smooth muscle membrane in the initiation of hypertension.

Betanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of betanin against a hypertensive animal model.

The study included animals divided into six main groups with each group containing 5 animals.

* Group I received the vehicle,

* Group II received dexamethasone injection (20 µg/kg/day, s.c.) for 14 days,

* Group III received an extract of Beta vulgaris (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days,

* Group IV received an extract of Beta vulgaris (300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days,

* Group V received dexamethasone injection (20 ugs/kg/day, s.c.) and extract of Beta vulgaris (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days and

* Group VI received dexamethasone (DEXA) injection (20 µg/kg/day, s.c.) and extract of Beta vulgaris (300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days.

At the end of the experiment after 14 days, the group treated with a combination of dexamethasone and beta vulgaris (100 and 300 mg/kg p.o. for 14 days) showed a significant decrease in heart rate compared to the Dexamethasone group.

According to the tested assays, the dexamethasone-treated group showed a significant elevation (p<0.05) in systolic blood pressure (SBP), and vascular reactivity changes to Catecholamine, compared to the control group.

Injection of beta vulgaris extract (100, 300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 14 days in dexamethasone-administered rats significantly (p<0.05) demonstrated a significant reversal of such change.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "The methanolic-HCl extract of Beta vulgaris has antihypertensive activity in Dexamethasone models".

In other words, betanin detected by phytochemical analysis from beta vulgaris extract protected the heart function and blood vessels through its antihypertensive properties.

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Betanin Inhibits #LungCancer Through Its #Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Mechanisms, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.
There are 2 types of antioxidants found in the human body, including
* Internally, antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver

* Externally, antioxidants are produced by the intake of antioxidants-rich food.

Free radicals, in fact, are everywhere, any atoms with oxygen molecules that have an unpaired electron on the outermost ring are considered free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable atoms. Therefore, in order to maintain stable, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept an electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain of reaction that can not be stopped until all outermost ring electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

An unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants over the long-term can induce oxidative stress, a condition that causes protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA.

In a healthy individual, antioxidants produced by the body are normally good enough to neutralize free radicals produced by the body in support of cellular metabolism and by external sources, such as the air we breathe and the foods we eat.

Diseases associated with oxidative stress including cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and cancer.

However, for people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly, the intake of antioxidants may be necessary.

Dr. wrote, "Oxidant-mediated tissue injury is a particular hazard to the immune system since phagocytic cells produce reactive oxygen species as part of the body's defense against infection".

And, " Although more striking effects have been observed in the elderly, there is also evidence that antioxidant nutrients can modify cell-mediated immune responses in younger individuals".

Betanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound associated with the reduced risk of oxidative stress, researchers examined the antioxidant activity of betanin on a rat paraquat-induced acute lung injury (ALI) model.

The study included paraquat injected intraperitoneally at a single dose of 20 mg/kg body weight, and betanin (25 and 100 mg/kg/d) following the orally administered 3 days before and 2 days after paraquat administration in selected rats.

According to the results of tested assays on rats sacrificed 24 hours after the last betanin dosage, and lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collected, rats treated only with paraquat showed an extensive lung injury characteristic of ALI, including increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels, lung oxidative stress markers, reduced antioxidant activity and increased expression of pro-inflammatory proteins in the lung.

Rat treated with betanin attenuated all such changes, in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, betanin ameliorated the effects of paraquat-induced ALI probably via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

In order to maintain the release of betanin, researchers incorporated red beetroot (RB) powder into starch-based bio-elastomers to obtain flexible biocomposites with tunable antioxidant properties.

According to free radical assays, betanin released by the corporation demonstrated highly efficient antioxidant scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation (ABTS(+)) compared to the application of red beetroot (RB) powder.

More precisely, red beetroot (RB) powder incorporated into starch-based bio-elastomers is more effective in inhibiting oxidation caused by free radicals compared to red beetroot (RB) powder.

Based on the results, Dr. Tran TN, the lead scientist wrote, "Hence, as a simple but intelligent biomaterial consisting of mainly edible starch and RB powder the present bio-elastomers can be used (to provide antioxidation) in the active packaging for a variety of pharmaceutical, medical, and food applications".
Taken altogether, betanin may be considered a supplement to improve the antioxidant profile of patients, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Serums of #BetaCarotene and #Lycopene Levels Are Associated with a Reduced Risk of #LungCancer, Reserachers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The lung is one of the vital organs in humans located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting it to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
Lung cancer is a chronic medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.

The exact cause of lung cancer is not identified. However, epidemiologically, smoking, second smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, family history, people who have lung disease, and excessive drinking are some prevalent factors associated with lung cancer developing.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, Lung cancer accounts for 14% of all new cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2018, there were about 234,030 new cases of lung cancer (121,680 in men and 112,350 in women). Lung cancer also causes the death of 83,550 in men and 70,500 in women in the same year.

Lung cancer can be classified into 2 major types
* Non-small cell lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer that usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably. The most common types of Non-small cell lung cancer lung cancers include
**Squamous-cell carcinoma often is found in an outer area of the lung.

** Large-cell carcinoma is found in the center of the lung by an air tube.

** Adenocarcinoma is found in any part of the lung.

* Small cell lung cancer
Small cell lung cancer is a fast-growing type of lung cancer, that can spread to distant parts of the body in a relatively early stage. The most common types of small cell lung cancer include
* Small cell carcinoma is small, round, and resembles oats.

*Mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma is found in combining components of small cell lung carcinoma with large cell lung carcinoma.

*Combined small cell carcinoma is found in combining a component of small cell lung carcinoma with components of non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers compared the dietary intake and serum levels of some selected carotenoids of lung cancer patients with healthy subjects.

The case-control study included 35 lung cancer patients and 33 healthy people with a daily intake of nutrients estimated by using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire and a 3-day 24-hour food recall questionnaire.

According to the tested analysis,
* The beta-carotene and lycopene intake of the case subjects was 96% and 195% higher in the lung participants compared to those of the control.
* Daily intake of fruits and vegetables in the cancer group was higher compared to the control group.

However, the serum concentrations of beta-carotene and lycopene were 118% and 60% higher in the control group compared to the lung cancer group.

These results suggested that there must be some unknown mechanisms associated with the reduced levels of beta-carotene and lycopene in the blood of lung cancer patients.

In other words, the intake of beta-carotene and lycopene daily reduces the risk of lung cancer in healthy individuals.

Dr. Asbaghi S, the lead scientist after taking other factors such as age, gender, smoking habits, weight, body mass index, mean daily energy intake, and mean daily fat intake into account wrote, "Despite a higher daily dietary intake of beta-carotene and lycopene by lung cancer patients, serum beta-carotene and lycopene concentrations were significantly lower than the group without cancer".

Taken altogether, carotenoids processed abundantly beta-carotene and lycopene may be considered a remedy for the prevention of lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal Turmeric Extract Inhibits Human Papillomavirus-Positive and Negative HPV+, HPV- Cells, Through Its Cell Cycle Arrest, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of chronic diseases associated with cell growth disorderly in the tissue of some specific organ. Depending on the grade and stage, most cases of cancer in the advanced stage have been found to induce a higher mortality rate compared to cancer diagnosed in the localized stage.
Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that starts in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

Squamous cell carcinoma is cancer arising from the squamous cells found in the outer layer of skin and in the mucous membranes, which are the moist tissues that line body cavities.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) develops in the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, and throat.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) epidemiologically has been found to spread to the lymph nodes or lungs. More than 90% of the head and neck cancer diagnosed are squamous carcinomas.

Symptoms of head and neck cancer may include a lump or sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, trouble swallowing, or a change in the voice.

According to the statistics provided by the Western General Hospital, squamous cell cancer of the head and neck is common worldwide accounting for 4% of all cancers in the United States and 5% in the United Kingdom.

The exact causes of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are unknown. However, geographically, smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, and long term poor diet is important to risk factors in the West compared to risk factors of chewing betel or areca nuts, smoking bidis, and taking snuff are important in the Indian subcontinent.

More importantly, the genetic preposition of genome 9p21, which may indicate the loss of a gene that suppresses tumors accounts for a total of 70% of all cases.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of head and neck cancer, researchers examined the effect of curcumin on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) using a panel of cell lines with and without human papillomavirus (HPV+, HPV-).

According to the tested differentiation, curcumin treatment of HNSCC cell lines not only interfered with RNA of Skp2, which causes cancer tumorigenesis and radiation tolerance but also induced concomitant accumulation of p21 and p27 associated with a cell cycle arrest in HPV+, HPV- cells.

Furthermore, curcumin inhibits cell viability and induces apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner in the tested cell line with and without human papillomavirus (HPV+, HPV-).

Moreover, curcumin treatment of HPV+ and HPV- cells resulted in apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis and activation of caspases that play a critical role in programmed cell death.

Additionally, the inhibition of HPV+ and HPV- cells by curcumin was also found to suppress the expression of poor prognostic markers such as XIAP, and cancer survival such as cIAP1, and cIAP2.

More importantly, co-treatment of HNSCC cells with curcumin and cisplatin potentiated inhibition of cell viability and apoptotic effects.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "These data suggest an important function for curcumin, acting as a suppressor of oncoprotein Skp2 in squamous cell carcinoma cells in both HPV+ and HPV- cells".

Taken together, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of HNSCC, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Green Peas Extract and Its Phytochemical Lectin Exert Potential Chemopreventive Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of cell-mutated diseases caused by the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of an organ. At early, most people with cancer are asymptomatic.

At the later stage, due to the size and the tumor, patients may experience general cancer symptoms such as unintended weight loss, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort, and loss of appetite, and localized symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding.

The exact causes of cancer are not identified. However, the most prevalent factors associated with the cancer onset include age, family history, long-term exposure to certain cancer-induced chemicals, use of tobacco and excessive alcohol drinking,..... the list goes on and on, depending on the type of cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factor that causes cancer in the Western world may be associated with widespread obesity.

Dr. Karen Basen-Engquist, in the evaluation of the obesity risk of cancer, said, "In the United States, approximately 85,000 new cancer cases per year are related to obesity. Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".

And, "High priorities for future research involve additional work on the underlying mechanisms, and trials to examine the effect of lifestyle behavior change and weight loss interventions on cancer and intermediate biomarkers".

The findings strongly indicated the risk of cancer is increased substantially in obese.

Green peas are a species of Pisum Sativum belonging to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalayan Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

In finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of cancer, researchers investigated the impact of green pea (GP) extracts anti-DNA alternative activity.

According to the studies,
* The extracts of P. sativum have been found to be pharmacologically active inducing anticancer effects.

* Compared to the effect of Bowman-Birk trypsin-chymotrypsin inhibitor, a potential cancer chemopreventive agent, with the protease inhibitors, rTl1B and rTl2B, P. sativum seed showed similar significant activity.

* In human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT-29, P. sativum extracted lectins from Egypt exhibited antiproliferative properties to liver cancer cell line.

* In MCF-7 (breast), HepG-2 (liver), HEP-2 (larynx), and HCT-116 (colon). An extracted lectin from the leaves and buds of P. sativum demonstrated cytotoxic properties.

* Recently, the seed extracts also showed cytotoxic effects on LS174 (colon), MDA-MB-453 (breast), A594 (lung), and K562 (blood) cell lines.

Taken together, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cervicalparavertebral Nerve Block Combined with Mailuoning and Angelica Sinensis in the Treatment of Nerve-Root type #CervicalSpondylosis

Kyle J. Norton

Degenerative disease is a progression that causes degenerative cell changes due to aging, affecting tissues or organs, which will increasingly deteriorate over time. ...

Normal bodily wear and tear or lifestyle choices (such as exercise or eating habits) may worsen degenerative diseases, but this depends on the disease.

Epidemiologically, the most common degenerative diseases include
* Alzheimer's disease (AD).
*Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease).
* Cancers.
* Cystic fibrosis.

Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear and tear that affects the spinal disks in your neck.

In other words, these age-related wear and tear cause the disks to dehydrate and shrink, leading to osteoarthritis development, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs).

Cervical spondylosis is very common and worsens with age.

The most common symptoms of cervical spondylosis are neck stiffness pain, and headache that may originate in the neck, pain in the shoulder or arms, inability to fully turn the head or bend the neck, sometimes interfering with driving, and grinding noise or sensation when the neck is turned.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of degenerative diseases, scientists examined the clinical effect of cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection in the treatment of nerve root type cervical spondylosis.

A total of 120 patients with nerve-root type cervical spondylosis were randomly divided into a research group (n=60) that was treated by cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection compared to the control group which was applied with glucocorticoid nerve block therapy.

According to the results of the comparison, the total therapeutic response rate of the research group was relatively higher than the control.

By comparing various clinical effect scores between the two groups, the research group also had advantages over the control group.

Furthermore, The treatment satisfaction degree of the research group was also higher than that of the control group.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, " application of cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection can achieve better medical results and achieve higher treatment satisfaction degree".

Taken together, angelica used together with other herbal medicines may be considered an adjunct remedy for the treatment of cervical spondylosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#CranberryJuices (CJ) and #CranberryExtracts (CE) Improve Overall #Neuropsychologic Symptoms, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Neuropsychological assessment provides both general and specific information about current levels of cognitive performance. An average or composite score across multiple ability areas provides an overall index of how well a person functions cognitively at the current time.

Cognition is the process of the brain functioning associated with the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Cognitive deficit is a medical condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding, or memory. The cognitive deficit can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive deficit is a short-term health problem caused by drug toxicity and withdrawal, electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensor input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction, or myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary. An acute cognitive deficit may be recovered if the cause is found.

Chronic cognitive deficit is a permanent medical condition caused by the gradual or permanent loss of neurons, leading to problems with language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

There is no single cause of the chronic cognitive deficit. An increase in age, genetic preposition, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, being obese, and lack of exercise are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic cognitive deficits.

Some researchers suggested that depending on the locations of the brain that were affected, patients may be at risk of Alzheimer's disease such as brain change caused by the abnormal clumps of beta-amyloid protein (plaques).

Small strokes or reduced blood flow through the brain can also cause a chronic cognitive deficit.

According to the observation of the patient MRI, the patient's brain with cognitive impairment also showed shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory, enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces (ventricles), and reduced use of glucose, the sugar that's the primary source of energy for cells.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the condition, obesity is also one of the major risk factors for cognitive impairment in the Western world.

Dr. Jason C. D. Nguyen, the lead author on the neurological team wrote in the final report, "The incidence of obesity in middle age is increasing markedly, and in parallel, the prevalence of metabolic disorders including cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes is also rising. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with poorer cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and dementia".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the cranberry extract (CE) neuropsychologic effect.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-group, clinical trial included 50 community-dwelling, cognitively intact volunteers, > or = 60 years old, who reported no history of dementia or significant neurocognitive impairments.

Participants in the study were randomly assigned to receive either 32 ounces/day of a beverage containing 27% cranberry juice per volume (n = 25) or placebo (n = 25) for 6 weeks.

According to the neuropsychologic tests before and after treatment on participants' self-reported, there was a nonsignificant trend (X2(1) = 2.373, p = 0.123) on overall abilities to remember.

However, more than twice of many participants (37.5%) reported the overall abilities to remember at the end of treatment compared to placebo controls (17.4%).

In other words, cranberry extract (CE) although can not improve overall neuropsychologic symptoms, enhances the short-term memory of dementia or significant neurocognitive impairments.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of memory, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
