Advanced glycation end is a by produces formed by protein or fat combined with sugar caused by cooking meat at high temperatures.
The products have been found to affect metabolic health.
The most common causes of AGEs are from the diet, particularly in people who follow the Western diet with high saturated and trans fats, a lot of red meats, and processed foods.
Low levels of AGEs may not be a problem, however, overexpression of AGEs can induce oxidative stress, leading to inflammation and damage proteins, lipids, and sometimes alternation of cells DNA.
In other words, AGEs initiates the production and free radicals and free radical a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Accelerated formation and accumulation of advanced glycation end-products have been found to increased hyperglycemia or oxidative stress, leading to age-related and chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoarthritis, and also non-diabetic atherosclerosis, and chronic heart failure.
Some researchers suggested that modern life byproducts of AGEs are the results of the promotion of the processed food diet.
Dr. Chetan Sharma, and Amarjeet Kaur, the lead scientist in the assessment of AGEs, wrote, "As modern diets are largely heat-processed, they are more prone to contain high levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs)".
And, "The chemistry of the AGEs formation, absorption and bioavailability and their path-biochemistry particularly in relation to different complications like diabetes and aging,... The emerging evidence about the adverse effects of AGEs makes it necessary to investigate the different therapies to inhibit AGEs".
The results strongly suggested the link of the modern diet with highly processed food is a leading cause of chronic diseases.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of oxidative stress, researchers examined anti-glycation effects of several polyphenol-rich fruits, including blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry extracts, which are rich in anthocyanins.
Berry crude extracts (CE) yielded anthocyanins-enriched (ACE) extracts used in the study, showed a significant effect against oxidative stress by exhibiting the free radical scavenging, reactive carbonyl species trapping, and anti-glycation effects compared to their respective ACFs.
Furthermore, the berry ACEs (at 100 μg/mL) inhibited both thermal- and MGO-induced Aβ fibrillation induced by the overexpression of glycation.
Moreover, the berry ACEs (at 20 μg/mL) also reduced H₂O₂-induced reactive oxygen species production and lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide species in BV-2 microglia by decreasing H₂O₂-induced neuron cytotoxicity and caspase-3/7 activity in BV-2 microglia involved in inflammation.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "The free radical scavenging, reactive carbonyl trapping, anti-glycation, anti-Aβ fibrillation, and microglial neuroprotective effects of these berry extracts warrant further in vivo studies to evaluate their potential neuroprotective effects against AD".
Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of AD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Polysaccharides Found in #Herbal #Coltsfoot Exerts an Effect on #Ppolychemotherapy-induced DNA Damage in Bone Marrow Cells
Kyle J. Norton
Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.
Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including the spine, pelvis, underarm, and leg. etc.
Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the number of extreme immature white blood cells that appear in the bloodstream in the other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, Acute leukemia can also be classified into
* Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the abnormal growth of extremely immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. The condition has a tendency to multiply quickly, leading to the death of normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.
In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common child form of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.
* Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.
According to the statistics proved by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 21,450 new cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) will be diagnosed in adults. The disease also causes the
of 10,920 deaths of American adults.
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of bone marrow cell integrity, researchers examined the protective effect of polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L. on bone marrow cells.
According to the tested analysis, Tussilago farfara L. protected the bone marrow cells against the side effects of polychemotherapy-induced apoptosis.
Furthermore, polychemotherapy-induced DNA damage in bone marrow cells was also reversed by the application of polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L.
In vivo, in the small intestinal epithelium of C57Bl/6 mice, polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L. also induced genoprotective properties against the chemo side effects.
Taken together, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the protection of bone marrow cell integrity against the onset of leukemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry #Extract Can Not Prevent Urinary Infection Occurence in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis, Researchers Reveal
Kyle J. Norton
Urinary incontinence, a medical, psychological, social, economic, and hygienic problem, is a condition of loss of the bladder to control that can lead to a mild or severe form of involuntary leakage of urine.
Involuntary urine leakage or urinary incontinence is frequent among elderly women, adult women, and even among adolescent women.
According to the statistics provided by Phoenix Physical Therapy, approximately 25 million adult Americans are living with some form of urinary incontinence of which 75-80% are women.
Believe it or not, about 17% of women and 16% of men over 18 years old have overactive bladder(OAB), and an estimated 12.2 million adults have urge incontinence.
All types of urinary incontinence have been found to have a negative impact on the quality of life and daily activity.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) caused by the immune system attacking the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers.
MS causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.
SHARON BEGLEY in examining the genetic preposition involved in MS wrote, " A newly discovered genetic mutation gives people who carry it a whopping 70 percent chance of developing multiple sclerosis, potentially opening the way toward new therapies for a debilitating neurological disorder whose ultimate cause has stumped researchers for decades".
The author continued, "The 70 percent chance of developing MS compares to a 0.1 percent risk in the general population, and the 100 or so previously known genetic variants increase the chance of MS to only about 0.3 percent at most, with no single gene packing much of a punch".
In other words, people having certain genes inherited from their parents are at a substantial risk of MS developing comapred to people who do not.
According to the statistics, in 2010/2011, approximately 93,500 Canadians were diagnosed with the disease, or 290 cases per 100,000 population. Believe it or not, MS is the most prevalent in Canada comapred to other parts of the world.

In finding a potential compound for the improvement of the quality of life in cancer patients, researchers examined cranberry extract on multiple sclerosis (MS) patients suffering from urinary disorders.
The cranberry versus placebo, prospective, double-blind study included a total of 171 adult MS outpatients with urinary disorders presenting at eight centers randomized to cranberry extract (36 mg proanthocyanidins per day) or matching placebo received twice daily for 1 year.
According to the results at follow-up, there was no difference between cranberry and placebo.
Furthermore, there was no difference in time to the first symptomatic UTI distribution across 1 year, with an estimated hazard ratio of 0.99, 95% CI [0.61, 1.60] (p = 0.97).
Moreover, secondary endpoints and tolerance did not differ between groups.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Taking cranberry extract versus placebo twice a day did not prevent UTI occurrence in MS patients with urinary disorders".
Taken together, cranberry does not improve urinary disorders in patients with MS, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Sulforaphane Inhibits Proteins and Parameters Associated with the Risk of #ColonCancer, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.
Most cases of primary colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At the early stage. most patients with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms.
However, at the advanced stage, the tumor not only can spread to other healthy tissues and organs a distance away through blood and fluid circulation but also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells.
The progression of colon cancer at this stage not only induces symptoms of the change in bowel habits, the change in the consistency of your stool, that lasts longer than four weeks but also causes rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal severe pain.
According to the statistics by the American Cancer Society, in the US, there are
97,220 new cases of colon cancer were diagnosed in 2018. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
The causes of colon cancer are unknown but certain risk factors, such as genetic preposition and chronic inflammation induced by colonic diseases are associated with the onset of the disease.
Some researchers suggested that the widespread of colon cancer over the past few decades is probably associated with the promotion of the Western diet.
According to an article posted on WebMD By Salynn Boyles, the author said, "While there is no shortage of evidence linking the so-called Western diet to an increased risk for developing colon cancer, the study is among the first to examine the impact of such a diet on survival among patients treated for the disease".
And, "The findings must be confirmed, but Dana-Farber Cancer Center oncologist Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD, a researcher on the team, says they cannot be ignored by colon cancer patients or their physicians".
The statement clearly suggested that by making a change to a healthy diet, the risk of colon cancer can be reduced substantially.
Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.
In finding a natural bioactive compound for the treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, researchers looked into sulforaphane an isothiocyanate that is present naturally in widely consumed vegetables and has a particularly high concentration in broccoli in the risk of colon cancer.
In rats, sulforaphane blocked the formation of tumors initiated by chemicals. The chemical compound inhibits the reinitiation of growth and decreases the cellular viability of quiescent human colon carcinoma cells (HT29).
Furthermore, sulforaphane-induced cell cycle arrest was correlated with an increased expression of a protein-associated cell cycle division and cell death via an apoptotic process through cancer cell degradation.
Moreover, researchers found the anti-colon cancer cell line effect was not attributed to the proteins associated with programming cell death but activation of detoxifying enzymes.
Dr. after taking into account co and confounders, said, " (These) results strongly suggest that in addition to the activation of detoxifying enzymes, induction of apoptosis is also involved in the sulforaphane-associated chemoprevention of cancer.
Additionally, the reaffirm the anticancer effect of the biological effect of GE132+Natural, a novel supplement consisting of 5 compounds: Resveratrol, Ganoderma lucidum, Sulforaphane, Lycopene, and Royal jelly, researchers analyzed the formula activity against 3 different human cancer cell lines: MCF7 (breast cancer cells), PC3 (prostate cancer cells), and SW480 (colon cancer cells), as well as on EA.hy 926 (normal human endothelial cell line).
The formula exerted a significant antiproliferative activity on all tested cancer cell lines (PC3, MCF7, and SW480), as well as on the EA.hy 926 endothelial cell line in a dose-dependent manner.
However, the application of the formula at different concentrations did not affect both the proliferation of primary mesenchymal stem cells and the peripheral blood cell counts.
The result pointed out that adult mesenchymal stem cells might be valuable as a test system for evaluating the toxicity and efficacy of new medicines or chemicals.
In the study to investigate the dietary isothiocyanates (ITCs) activity against HDAC turnover, CtIP acetylation, and dysregulated DNA damage signaling in colon cancer cells, researchers found that sulforaphane (SFN), a member of ITCs protects the colon tissue by inhibiting the HDAC activity and increase HDAC protein turnover.
Injection of sulforaphane (SFN) also induced colon cell growth arrest, autophagy, and apoptosis.
Further analysis of the results researcher also discovered that ITC-induced DNA damage of colon cancer cells without causing harm to the non-cancer cells.
Taken altogether, the findings suggested that phytochemical sulforaphane may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending the confirmation of the large sample size and multi-center human study

The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.
The prostate gland is considered a reproductive organ in men.
Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams.
Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.
At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination, and urinary difficulty.
The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis tumors.
According to the statistics, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages of prostate cancer is nearly 100%.
Believe it or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.
Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history increase in age, and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.
In finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the effects of Brassica vegetables, including mustard greens on prostate cancer risk.
According to the tested results
* Brassica vegetables exerted a strong effect on the metabolic breakdown products associated with the modulation of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes that protect DNA from damage.
According to the 12 published studies that analyze the relationship between Brassica vegetable intake and prostate cancer risk

* Three reported statistically significant reduced risks (P < 0.05) and one reported a borderline significantly reduced risk (P = 0.06) with high Brassica vegetable consumption.
* 6 showed a clear explanation of the prostate cancer risk involved in the consumption of Brassica vegetables.
Collectively, researchers said, " The epidemiological literature provides modest support for the hypothesis that high intakes of Brassica vegetables reduce prostate cancer risk".
Taken together, mustard greens may be considered a functional food for reducing the risk of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

4% CollardGreens, Purslane or Sweet Potato Improves Parameters Associated with a Decreased Risk of Liver Diseases, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
An increase in the biosynthesis of fatty acids is associated with the onset of Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL).
A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is the early stage of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver, other than excessive use of alcohol.
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver.
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is asymptomatic until the condition is developed into cirrhosis, the condition that causes advanced liver scars and reduces the performance of the liver.
In other words, if more than 5% – 10% percent of your liver’s weight is fat, you have a fatty liver (steatosis).
According to the statistics, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of liver disease affecting 100 million people in the US. Out of that number, approximately 20% of people have NASH.
Medical conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes are some of the metabolic risk factors that have been found to induce the development of NASH.
As of today, there is no effective treatment of NASH. Depending on the condition people with overweight or obese are recommended to lose weight. The aim of medical treatment is to reduce the symptoms delay the progression of the condition and improve the quality of life.
Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belonging to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.
In findings a potential compound for the modulation of liver fatty acid, researchers examined the effects of diets containing 4% collard greens, purslane, or sweet potato greens on the liver fatty acid profiles of four-week-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) for 4 weeks.
Based on the tested assays, SHRs received in the control diet had greater percentages of liver saturated fatty acid and less omega-3 fatty acid percentages.
Moreover, the SHRs that consumed the control diet also had significantly greater percentages of oleic; and significantly less γ-linolenic and docosahexaenoic acids.
However, SHRs that received the diets containing vegetables had significantly greater liver concentrations of γ- linolenic, docosahexaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids, as well as lower levels of lauric, palmitic, and arachidonic acids.
In other words, 4% collard greens, purslane or sweet potato greens showed a strong effect in reducing the risk of fatty liver in hypertensive rats (SHRs) after 4 weeks of consumption by improving the liver profile parameters.
Taken together, collard green may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver disease associated with the expression of liver fatty acid, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Pulmonary diseases are a class of diseases associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia tuberculosis, and lung cancer.
In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lungs are pulmonary diseases.
The most common pulmonary diseases are
* Asthma
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages and mostly starts during childhood.
* Pneumothorax
Pneumothorax is a condition of collection of air within the pleural cavity, from either the outside or from the lung.
* Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a condition of an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi, the larger and medium-sized airways that carry airflow from the trachea into the lung parenchyma.
* COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)** Emphysema is a type of COPD with a long-term and progressive condition that causes shortness of breath, depending on the stage of lung function associated with the damage of tissues of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs.
** Chronic bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammation of the lung’s bronchi that causes the increased production of mucus in the lung associated with difficulty of breathing.
*Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells
* PneumoniaPneumonia is a condition of the inflammation of the lung caused by bacteria, such as bacterial infection, Streptococcus pneumonia, or influenza viruses in most cases.
* Pulmonary edema
Pulmonary edema is a condition of fluid accumulation in the air spaces and parenchyma of the lungs that leads to difficulty breathing and respiratory failure.
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of pulmonary disease, researchers examined the dietary supplementation of tomato juice, TJ protection against the developing lung injury caused by breathing hyperoxic gas.
Neonatal mice (C57BL6/J) breathed either 65% O2 (hyperoxia) or room air from birth until postnatal day 7 (P7d)selected for the study underwent necropsy at P7d or raised in room air until adulthood (P56d). In a subset of both groups, drinking water was replaced with TJ (diluted 50:50 in water) from late gestation to necropsy.
In P7d, TJ injection increased pulmonary total antioxidants (TAC) and COL1α1 expression associated with pulmonary fibrosis and attenuated the hyperoxia-induced increase in production ROS without affecting the changes in lung structure.
Furthermore, in P56d, TJ increased TAC, decreased oxidative stress, and reversed the hyperoxia-induced increase in bronchiolar smooth muscle by ameliorating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "TJ supplementation during and after neonatal exposure to hyperoxia protects the lung from some but not all aspects of hyperoxia-induced injury".
In other words, TJ protects the lung against injury by stimulating the expression of circulation of antioxidant concentration.
Taken together, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
