#Fennel Powder, Extract, and Oil Inhibit Nephrotoxicity through Their Antioxidant Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect on excess water and toxins from the body, some scientists suggested.

The result was reported on online medical literature conducted by some respectable institutes, including John Wiley & Sons, Ltd . and UFR Physiologie-Pharmacologie over different aspects via a number of mechanisms.
Diuresis is a medicine for the stimulation of increased production of urine.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In animal models, according to John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. in the evaluation of the toxic effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare var dulce (D.C) root, application of the extract exerted significant activities in flushing out of excess water and toxin from the body through increased kidney function in secretion of the urine.

The result of these properties was observed by an increase in urine flow and urinary sodium excretion.

The efficacy in cleansing the body was also found linearly in dose dose-dependent manner.

Continuously, in further examination of the efficacy of fennel powder, extract, and oil on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity through a study of a total of 35 adult female Sprague Dawley rats classified into five groups with the first group kept on a standard diet all over the period of the experiment. and the other groups were administered gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day for 7 days i.p), followed by either the control (+ve) group or treated groups with fennel powder, extract, and oil for 45 days, At the end of study, Researchers found that
* The injected gentamicin group served as control and exhibited strong nephrotoxicity manifested by increased levels of kidney function indicator, serum nitric oxide (NO), and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) however, this group of rats also exerted a significant decrease in weight gain.

Increased expression of serum nitric oxide (NO) and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of severed oxidative stress caused by an imbalanced ratio of ROS and antioxidants in the host.

* Gentamicin groups treated with fennel powder, extract and oil demonstrated an improved level of urea and uric acid in comparison to control (+ve) and displayed an improvement of antioxidant enzymes as the increase of serum superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, and glutathione transferase (GST) and decrease of serum NO in compared to control (+ve) group.

These results addressed the important antioxidant effect of fennel extracts. Applications not only inhibited the levels of free radicals and their' chain reactive activities but also stimulated the production of antioxidants found in the host tissue.

* Moreover, the group treated with fennel oil restored the normal values of kidney antioxidant enzymes compared with a normal group and other treatment groups.

Dr. Soheir Ahamed Al-Masri, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "fennel powder, extract, and oil have a potent antioxidant and ameliorate in rats gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in rats".

Clearly, fennel oil exhibited the greatest effect in stimulating kidney function in detoxing the body toxins through increased secretion of urine in comparison to another experimental group.

The results of this study clearly indicate that fennel powder, extract, and oil have a potent antioxidant and ameliorate in rats gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. [Soheir Ahamed Al-Masri and Waffa, Sh. Ali. The Ameliorating

Interestingly, in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) treated with either water extract of Marrubium vulgare L. or Foeniculum vulgare L. in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), researchers showed that application of fennel water extract reduced hypertension through Foeniculum increased water, sodium and potassium excretion in compared to non effect of Marrubium treated group.

Additionally, compared to Marrubium extract in reduced hypertension through inhibited contractile responses, fennel restored the normal; blood pressure by increased urine secretion and ameliorated the overexpression of ROS and increased antioxidant status in the host.

Surely, one can say that Foeniculum acts mainly as a diuretic and a natriuretic while Marrubium displays vascular relaxant activity.

Taken together, fennel and its extracts may be considered a detox functional food in getting rid of body toxins through its diuretic activities.

#Healthy Food #Onion Inhibit of Angiogenesis Associated with #CancerCell Migration, Apoptosis and Invasion, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Angiogenesis is the process that promotes the formation of new blood vessels involving many factors including the migration, growth, and differentiation of endothelial cells.

In normal cells, angiogenesis is important for the cells to obtain nutrients and metabolites through the small blood vessels. Angiogenesis has been found to process a therapeutic effect for the treatment of ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, and wound healing.

Dr. Papetti M, the lead scientist at the Tufts University School of Medicine said, "Normal angiogenesis ensures that developing or healing tissues receive an adequate supply of nutrients".
In cancers, angiogenesis stimulated by the tumor cells has been associated with tumor proliferation and metastasis.

More precisely, the angiogenesis process is a function of a double sword, on one hand, the process provides an ideal condition for the treatment of diseases and wound healing. On the other hand, it promotes invasive and overgrowth tumor.

Dr. Papetti M continued, "Tumor cells induce the formation of new blood supply from the preexisting vasculature, and this affords tumor cells the ability to survive and propagate in a hostile environment"

Collectively, " both normal and tumor-induced neovascularization fulfill the essential role of satisfying the metabolic demands of tissue".

Based on the findings some researchers suggested, that by inhibiting the process of blood vessel formation of the tumor, cancer may be curable.

Dr. Dai X, the lead researchers in the study of "Suppression of murine B-cell lymphoma growth by trichosanthin through anti-angiogenesis" showed, "trichosanthin TCS, ( an immunosuppressive and anti-tumor protein) inhibits murine B-cell lymphoma growth by anti-angiogenesis was reported. First, TCS inhibit tumor growth and prolonged survival significantly in vivo, and TCS depressed the formation of new blood vessels around the tumor in a dose-dependent manner".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a closely related of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

In finding a potent ingredient that processes anti-cancer activity researchers studied the antiangiogenic activity of quercetin isolated from onion, using ex vivo, in vivo, and in vitro models.

According to the tested differentiation, quercetin at non-toxic concentrations significantly inhibited the microvessel sprouting associated with cancer cell proliferation.

Furthermore, the activity of cancer cell migration, invasion, and tube formation of endothelial cells involved in the process of angiogenesis.was also significantly decreased by the administration of quercetin.

Quercetin treatment inhibited ex vivo angiogenesis observed by chicken egg chorioallantoic membrane assay (CAM) and matrigel plug assay.

Moreover, quercetin suppressed vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which has been found to induce the formation of a blood vessel for the progression of the tumor.

Additionally, downstream pathways associated with the promotion of survival and growth in response to extracellular signals that induce angiogenesis were also inhibited by quercetin in HUVECs.

Quercetin at the concentration of 20 mg/kg/d significantly reduced the volume and the weight of solid tumors in a prostate xenograft mouse model by targeting angiogenesis.

Quercetin was also found to inhibit the cancer cell viability and induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cells.

In other words, quercetin inhibits tumor growth and angiogenesis by targeting the proteins and signaling pathways that initiate the growth of new blood vessels.

Taken altogether, onion processed with a higher amount of quercetin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical 3,3'-#Diindolylmethane Inhibits Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Against #OxidativeStress-Induced Cardiac Injury

Kyle J. Norton

The heart muscle or myocardium is one of three types of muscles in humans, that build the walls of the heart.
The most common diseases of heart muscle include angina pectoris myocardial infarction, and other heart muscle disease caused by restricting blood supply to the muscle.

The most common symptoms of heart muscle diseases include tightness, pain, or swelling of the legs, ankles, and feet

Some patients may also experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomforts include bloating, abdominal pain and shortness of breath caused by the reduced blood supply.

The most common risk factors associated with heart muscle disease include high blood pressure, heart tissue damage, heart problems, metabolic syndrome, nutritional deficiencies, excessive alcohol drinking.

Some researchers suggested that genetic preposition may have a strong effect on the induction of heart muscle disease.

The Genetics Home Reference wrote, " mutations in more than 30 genes have been found to cause familial dilated cardiomyopathy. These genes provide instructions for making proteins that are found in cardiac muscle cells called cardiomyocytes.

And, "Mutations in one gene, TTN, account for approximately 20 percent of cases of familial dilated cardiomyopathy".

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient that protects the heart muscle against the onset of cardiovascular disease researchers examined the 3, 3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) effects on cardiomyocytes.

Tested cell lines H9C2 used in the study were evaluated by DIM's influence on inflammation and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes induced by LPS. H9C2 cells incubated with DIM (10, 20, and 30 μM) with or without LPS for 24 h.

Treatment with various concentrations of DIM (10, 20, and 30 μM) inhibited the overabundance of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA expression) induced by LPS.

In other words, DIM normalized the levels of impaired TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA expression, in the LPS + DIM30(μM) group.

According to the tested assays, DIM treatment significantly blocked LPS-induced oxidative stress and inhibited LPS-induced apoptosis in H9C2 cardiomyocytes.

Furthermore, DIM significantly inhibited the LPS-induced expression of a protein associated with proapoptosis and enhanced the expression of a protein involved in anti-apoptosis.

Dr. Luo Q, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report, "DIM may have a protective effect for H9C2 cardiomyocytes against LPS-induced inflammatory response and apoptosis. DIM may be a new insight into the treatment of septic cardiomyopathy".

In order to find out more information about DIM anti-cardiovascular disease activity, researchers evaluated the function of DIM on hypoxia‑induced cardiac injury.

The study included H9c2 cells pretreated with DIM (1, 5 and 10 µM) for 12 h and exposed to hypoxia for 12 h.

DIM with different doses extended markedly attenuated the increased transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin (IL)‑1β, IL‑6, and tumor necrosis factor‑α) induced by hypoxia.

DIM also modulated the genes associated with transcription of autophagy, compared with the hypoxia group.

DIM also protected the cells against apoptosis by inhibiting and exhibiting the proteins associated with anti-apoptosis and pro-apoptosis, respectively.

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the protection of heart muscle against the risk of heart disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits Kidney Damage and Injury Associated with Drugs, Heavy Metals and Substances Toxicity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys are a pair of kidney-shaped organs located on either side of your spine with a function to filter out the wastes from the blood before passing the wastes through urinary secretion.

More than a detoxed organ, the kidneys also maintain the body fluid balance and regulate the production of red blood cells and high blood pressure.

Kidney damage can be acute such as an overdose of toxin or chronic. Acute kidney diseases can be cured if the underlying cause is found.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow and progressive disease that can lead to kidney failure over time.

The advance of CKD can cause dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and waste build-up in the body.

According to statistics, approximately 14 percent of the US general population suffers from CKD. Believe it or not, more than 661,000 Americans have kidney failure. Of these, 468,000 individuals are on dialysis, and roughly 193,000 live with a functioning kidney transplant.

Out of many risk factors associated with CKD, some researchers suggest high blood pressure is one most prevalent risk factors found in most patients.

The Natural Kidney Foundation wrote, "More than half the people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the chance that kidney disease will get worse"

And "Following your treatment plan carefully and keeping your blood pressure under control can help to prevent these complications".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential compound with kidney protective properties, researchers investigated curcumin, a major phenolic compound the rhizome of the Curcuma species kidney toxicity.

In glucose, tartrazine-induced toxicity, curcumin protected the kidney against DNA damage in leucocytes.

In a streptozotocin-induced diabetes rat model, curcumin protected the kidney against overexpression of free radicals to cause kidney cell damage through its antioxidant activity.

In the long-term heavy metal model, curcumin inhibited the toxic effect caused by the accumulation of the metal in the induction of kidney cell damage.

In an animal model induced cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury by injection of cisplatin, curcumin enhanced the function of cisplatin-resistant cancer cells and decreased its unwanted side effects.

More interestingly, curcumin inhibited the nicotine receptors on kidney cells that link nicotine to accelerated kidney damage in cigarette smokers

In other words. if the kidneys are less able to excrete nicotine, in the long term, accumulated extracellular fluid and blood volumes increase, which can lead to severe kidney damage.

In other studies, kidney damage caused by maleate, malathion, nicotine, cisplatin, gentamicin, and methotrexate was also reversed by the injection of curcumin, similar to those of the aforementioned substances.

Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of kidney damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal Chaste Tree Berry Improves Hormone Expression in Natural and d-Galactose-Induced Aging, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Chaste tree berries may have a strong effect in reducing the risk of free radical progression in inducing various diseases, the renowned institute suggested.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Antioxidants are chemical compounds with the function of inhibiting oxidation caused by the production of free radicals with an aim to reduce the risk of oxidative damage to our body.

According to the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ege University, in the observation of the chemical activity of different preparations of Chaste tree berry, researchers showed that water and ethanol extract content is far stronger antioxidant activity in compared to n-hexane extracts.

In vitro antioxidant assays, the newly differentiated ingredients isolated from the Chaste tree berry, EtOAc extract displayed a significant antioxidant property in reduced free radicals caused by brain homogenate. at the concentration-dependent effect tested by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrasyl (DPPH) free radical assay (IC(50) = 68 microg/mL) in compared fractions of MeOH-H(2)O and n-hexane fraction.

The study also suggested that the efficacy of the antioxidant effect in the extract may have resulted from the recently discovered phytochemicals, flavonoid constituents EtOAc extract, capsaicin, vitexin, and orientin as viewed in the tested essay.

More importantly, in support of the above differentiation, a study of mice subcutaneously injected with d-galactose (500 mg/kg/d for 45 days) induced aging and natural aging. administrated extract of Vitex (600 mg/kg/bid for 7 days by gavage) to 72 female NMRI mice (48 3-month-old normal mice and 24 18-24-month-old mice), weighing 30-35 g randomly divided into six groups: control, Vitex, d-galactose, Vitex + d-galactose, Aging, and Vitex + Aging, groups treated with chaste tree berry expressed a superior effect in restored estrous cycle and damage of uterus and ovarian tissues, through antioxidant activities in ameliorated oxidative stress and aging diseases.

Truly, mice treated with extract of Chaste tree berry only showed a reduced presence of free radicals but also improved hormone expression in natural and d-galactose-induced aging.

Taking together, there is no doubt that Chaste tree berries display a significant antioxidant potential in ameliorating the risk of free radicals in induced chronic diseases, but a large amount of intake should be taken with care.

#Fennel Inhibits Ulcerogenic Expression through its Antioxidant Activities, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a therapeutic and enhanced effect in improving the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids from food intake, some scientists suggested.

The result of this efficacy was published online by several respectable institutes, including the University of Illinois at Chicago and Afyon Kocatepe University.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

According to the study, researchers set out criteria and guideline to investigate the effect of fennel in the gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori (HP), the microorganisms have been associated with the development of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease to confirm the theory used in traditional medicine fennel to treat a wide range of ailments, including gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as dyspepsia, gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (PUD), application of methanol extracts of botanicals with a MIC of 50 microg/mL included Achillea millefolium, Foeniculum vulgare (seed), exerted a significant inhibitory effect against all susceptibility of 15 HP strains.

These results suggested that injection of fennel displayed potential in balancing the ratio of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract, thus improve the function in absorbed and distributed nutrients to the body and reassured the herbal medicine used in practice for the treatment of numbers symptoms of
digestive disorder.

Furthermore, in an animal model with rat-induced gastric lesions by injection of ethanol, the application of aqueous extracts of Foeniculum vulgare (FVE) showed strong activity in inhibiting ulcerogenic expression through its antioxidant activities.

In observation of the efficacy of 60 minutes pre-administration of the doses of 75, 150, and 300 mg/kg, with famotidine, histamine H₂ receptor antagonist with function to inhibit stomach acid production, used at the dose of 20 mg/kg, before injection of ethanol, researchers found that

* Pre-treatment of all doses exerted a significant gastric protective effect in reduced injury and damage caused by the injection of ethanol.

* Fennel extract demonstrated a therapeutic activity linearly compared to other doses and control at a dose of 300 mg/kg

* These activities were associated with reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a marker in the expression of severe levels of oxidative stress.

Additional analysis, also suggested that fennel stimulated the gastro-protect effect through its antioxidants and facilitated the production of antioxidants found in the body tissues in inhibited the overexpression of free radicals, thus maintaining the ratio of microorganisms in the digestive tract and its functioning.

After, taking into account other co and confounders, researchers also suggested that the result in part may also attributed to antioxidants in ameliorated lipid peroxidation.

The above differentiation was supported by the joint report led by the Joint Keio University in the investigation of fennel properties associated with functional dyspepsia (FD), a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by persistent or recurrent postprandial upper abdominal discomfort and epigastric pain.

Truly, Delayed gastric emptying and impaired gastric accommodation was found to play important roles in the development of FD.

Anethole (1-methoxy-4-((E)-propenyl)-benzene), a major component of fennel essential oil, in rodents, exerted a huge effect in improved clonidine-induced delayed gastric emptying without harming normal gastric emptying in mice, orally.

Also, the application of fennel oil plus Anchu-san (a Japanese herbal medicine containing anethole) also demonstrated an important activity in reducing the risk of functional dyspepsia (FD) by restoring delayed gastric emptying.

In other words, anethole processes a gastroprotective efficacy through stimulating gastric accommodation.
Taken together, whole fennel, fennel essential oil, and its bioactive compound anethole may be used as a secondary application in reduced risk and treatment of digestive disorder. Adding a portion of fennel to your diet may improve the digestive function in the absorption of nutrients and fluids from the food intake.

However, intake of supplements should be taken with extreme care as an overdose may cause acute liver toxicity.

#Chaste Tree Berry Exerts a Significantly #Osteoprotective Activity, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Chaste tree berry is found to be processability in reduced MALE osteopenia turnover, the early sign of osteoporosis, a renowned institution study reported.
Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.

In a total of 60, 3-month-old male rats orchidectomized and divided into five groups with each group either receiving soy-free food (C), estradiol (E), testosterone (T), or Vitex agnus castus in different concentrations (AC high/AC low) for 12 weeks, rats treated with Vitex agnus castus at highest dose displayed a recover of 88.4% of the trabecular bone area, 80.7% of the trabecular number and 66.9% of the number of trabecular nodes compared with other administrations.

The study also found out that Vitex agnus castus is more protective in treating osteoporosis in the male population compared female counterpart.

Dr. Sehmisch S, the lead author said, " Vitex agnus castus demonstrated osteoprotective effects in males. It preserves the cortical as well as the trabecular bone and might be a safe alternative for HRT".

Furthermore, In the study to compare a group of animals (n = 8) treated subcutaneously (s.c.) with 60 mg/kg of Vac essential oil once a day for 3 weeks and control animals (n = 8) received sterile olive oil s.c. by the same schedule, Vitex agnus-castus L. (Vac) essential oil-treated group also exerted a significant bone metabolism in 16-month-old male Wistar rats.

The osteoporosis protection can be observed through the lower Serum osteocalcin (OC) and calcium (Ca2+) in Vitex agnus-castus L. (Vac) essential oil and decreased bone turnover treated group in compared control in middle-aged male rats.

Taking together, Chaste tree berry showed strong support in the reduced early onset of osteoporosis of male gander through improved bone metabolism and calcium status, but further, large size and centers studies are necessary to validate this potency.
