Hyperlipidemia is abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. The syndrome is a member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome, a leading cause of cardiovascular disease.
Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced either by the liver or food intake plays a critical role in the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and the building of the cell walls.
Overexpression cholesterol is a medical condition that causes plaque to accumulate on the arterial wall, leading to the narrowing of the arteries in transport the of oxygenated blood to the parts of the body.
In severe cases, it can cause blood flow blockage, leading to chronic ailments depending on the location of the blood clot.
There are 2 types of blood cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) which carries the aforementioned functions, and high-density cholesterol (HDL) which carries cholesterol from the blood back to the liver for future re-use.
The healthy ratio of total blood cholesterol is less than 4 LDL/ 1 HDL.
Most people are diagnosed with high blood cholesterol substantially higher total cholesterol ratio.
Some researchers suggested that the widespread high blood cholesterol in North America is associated with the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Kamilah Ali, the lead scientist in the assessment of the Western diet risk of high blood cholesterol in an animal model, wrote, "mice on a C57BL/6 background after receiving a high fat-high cholesterol diet for 12 weeks. ApoD−/− mice had higher HDL-cholesterol levels (61±13-apoD−/− vs. 52±10-WT-males; 37±11-apoD−/− vs. 22±2 WT-female) than WT mice with sex-specific changes in total plasma levels of cholesterol and other lipids".
And, "Compared to WT, the HDL of apoD−/− mice showed an increase in large, lipid-rich HDL particles and according to size various quantities and sizes of LDL particles".
The results suggested that long-term users of the Western diet may be associated with the risk of hyperlipidemia.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia investigated the effect of ginger extracts on alcohol-induced hyperlipidemia and associated myocardial damage.
The study included 24 Wistar male albino rats (250 ± 20 g) divided into four groups including, normal control (NC) (0.9% NaCl), ginger treated (Gt) (200 mg/Kg b.w.), alcohol-treated (At) (20% of 6g/kg b.w. alcohol), and alcohol along with Ginger treatment (At+Gt).
Before ginger administration, alcohol-induced myocardial damage rats showed an increased lipid profile except for high-density lipoprotein compared with control.
Ginger treatment significantly inhibited the alcohol-induced lipid profiles caused by the injection of alcohol except for high-density lipoproteins.
Furthermore, the ginger treatment also inhibited the elevated cardiac biomarkers activity with alcohol intoxication. In other words, ginger treatment for 7 weeks significantly minimized the alcohol-induced myocardial damage.
Dr. Subbaiah GV, the lead scientist said, "Ginger could protect alcohol-induced myocardial damage by suppression of hyperlipidemia and cardiac biomarkers".
In order to reveal more information about ginger's anti-hypolipidemic effects, researchers examined the hypolipidemic effects of a hydroethanolic ginger extract (GE) in the liver of rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD).
The study included male Wistar rats divided into the following 3 groups: (i) Rats fed a standard diet (3.5% fat), the control group; (ii) rats fed an HFD (33.5% fat); and (iii) rats fed an HFD treated with GE (250 mg·kg-1·day-1) for 5 weeks (HFD+GE).
GE improved lipid profile and attenuated the increase of plasma levels of glucose, insulin, and leptin in HFD rats.
In the in-depth analysis, researchers found that ginger antihyperlipidemic activity was attributed to the induction of a higher liver expression of proteins associated with a variety of metabolic processes including lipid and enhanced levels of adiponectin which plays a critical role in preventing dyslipidemia.
Taken together, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#CranberryJuice improves Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms and Decreases the Disease Activity, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder characterized by inflammation of the flexible (synovial) joints tissues and organs in the body.
The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the age of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million of adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.
Rheumatoid arthritis was found to induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often associate with valgus deformities of the feet and deformities of gait due to body function due to an effort to support the collapsing longitudinal arch of the foot.
Long-term bone damage and the prolonged onset of the disease can induce deformities of the hand and wrist and small peripheral joints (such as fingers and wrist) due to chronic inflammation.
The effects of muscle strength in patients with RA may contribute to the prevalence of physical functional limitations that can affect daily living and quality of life.
Furthermore, rheumatoid nodules, lumps on the skin, and closed to joint have been found to affect the joints of patients with RA.
Moreover, morning stiffness, a marker of inflammatory activity that reflects functional disability and pain is a very common symptom of patients in the early stage of rheumatoid arthritis.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory disease, researchers examined the effect of cranberry juice consumption on several inflammatory biomarkers and on the disease activity of patients with RA.
The prospective study included 41 women diagnosed with RA.randomly divided into a control group (n = 18) that maintained their usual diet and the cranberry group (n = 23) received 500 mL/d of low-calorie cranberry juice.
Compared to baseline values, the cranberry group showed a decrease in the values of Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28) (P = 0.048) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP), the antibody present in most rheumatoid arthritis patients (P = 0.034) after 90 d of treatment without affecting the inflammatory biomarkers.
The results strongly suggested that cranberry juice improves rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and decreases the disease activity that benefits RA patients.
Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of rheumatoid arthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Honey Improves Nocturnal Cough and Sleep Difficulty in Children, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the improvement of sleep quality with no side effects, according to studies.
Sleep disorders are conditions that can be acute or chronic. Most of us experience sleep disturbance sometimes due to some specific and unspecific events. However, chronic sleep disorders are changes in the way that you sleep.
Most people with chronic sleep disorder experience symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular breathing or increased movement during sleep, and difficulty falling asleep.
Sleep quality can be measured by examining the. the way that you sleep, including the time period that you need to fall to asleep and how many times you have awakened and drifted back to sleep during night sleep.
According to the statistics provided by the National Sleep Foundation’s inaugural Sleep Health Index, 45 % of Americans have poor or insufficient sleep. which affects their daily activities at least once in the past seven days.
The National Sleep Foundation continued, "...despite sleeping within the recommended number of hours a night, 35 percent of Americans report their sleep quality as “poor” or “only fair.” Twenty percent of Americans reported that they did not wake up feeling refreshed on any of the past seven days".
What causes poor quality of sleep in America? Some researchers suggested these may be results of occupation and occupation stress.
Dr, Eui-Joong Kim, the lead scientist, in examing the stressors' effect on sleep quality said, "It is possible that different types of stressors may bring with them different impacts on sleep" and " (a) some aspect of daily stress (such as job stress) and life events (such as divorce, bereavement), (b) experimentally imposed stressors (laboratory-based studies), and (c) traumatic stressors (such as disasters or PTSD)".
Additionally, " The first and last categories typically involve a longer duration of the stress exposure with varying levels of intensity; the experimental stressors, on the other hand, typically involve a short-term exposure to mild stress".
These results partly explain why over 20% of Americans suffer from poor quality of sleep.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners many people.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the improvement of sleep quality, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of 3 honey products (eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, or Labiatae honey) to placebo (silan date extract) in children with upper respiratory tract infections (URIs).
The study included 300 children aged 1 to 5 years with URIs, nocturnal cough, and illness duration of ≤ 7 days from 6 general pediatric community clinics.
Eligible children received a single dose of 10 g of eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, Labiatae honey, or a placebo administered 30 minutes before bedtime. There was a significant improvement in sleep quality from the night before treatment to the night after treatment in all 3 honey products and the placebo group.
However, the improvement was greater in the honey groups.
Honey products were rated higher than the silan date extract for symptomatic relief of their children's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to URI, According to the survey returned from parents.
Dr. Cohen HA the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Honey may be a preferable treatment for a cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood URI".
Furthermore, in order to reveal more information on honey effects in cough and sleep difficulty, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of buckwheat honey or honey-flavored dextromethorphan (DM) with no treatment on nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood upper respiratory tract infections.
The study included 105 children aged 2 to 18 years with upper respiratory tract infections, nocturnal symptoms, and illness duration of 7 days or less who were given a single dose of buckwheat honey, honey-flavored DM, or no treatment administered 30 minutes prior to bedtime.
The honey treatment group demonstrated significant differences in symptom improvement between treatment groups.
In paired comparisons, honey was significantly superior to no treatment for cough frequency and the combined score.
And, according to the survey returned by the parents, honey is most favorable for symptomatic relief of their child's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty in children with upper respiratory tract infections.
Taken together, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the improvement of sleep quality, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Inhibits Parameters Associated with Psychosis and Oxidative Stress, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Psychosis is an abnormal condition that causes the inability of the mind to determine what is real and what is not, leading to abnormal behaviors, and emotions.
The most common symptoms of psychosis are false beliefs or delusions and seeing or hearing things that a healthy person does not see or hear.
According to the statistics provided by the US government, in 2017, approximately 46.6 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States are living with mental illness, representing 18.9% of all U.S. adults.
The Mental Health Illness suggested that 3.5% of the American population is experiencing psychosis.
The most common psychotic disorders are
* Schizophrenia: is a serious mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and acts.
* Schizophreniform disorder is considered an acute case of Schizophrenia with symptoms that occur for a period of at least one month but no more than six months.
* Schizoaffective Disorder: is a condition with symptoms similar to those of schizophrenia, accompanied by additional periodic symptoms of mood (or affective) disorders.
Besides hearing or seeing something that is not real, other common symptoms of psychosis disorder are a constant feeling of being watched, disorganized or bizarre speech or writing, inappropriate or unusual behavior, and strange body movements or positioning.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of a change in personal hygiene, appearance, and personality, irrational, angry, or fearful responses to loved ones, and inability to sleep or concentrate.
Conventionally, early diagnosis of psychosis can increase the rate of od successful treatment.
A combination of antipsychotic medication and family intervention, cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive psychotherapy, case management, skills training, and education have been found to induce treatment outcomes.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia.
Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of mental disorders associated with illusion, researchers examined the effect of aqueous cranberry extract (ACE) on MK-801-induced psychosis in mice.
The study included selected MK-801-treated mice administered ACE (1 and 2 g/kg, p.o.) for 14 days.
According to tested differentiation of various behavioral parameters and neurochemical estimations such as dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate, and glycine and markers of oxidative stress such as nitrate levels, psychosis-induced mice exerted a significant elevation of immobility time in the forced swim test, locomotor activity, and reduction in time of permanency in rota-rod test, escape latency time in Cook's pole test.
However, after treatment of ACE, MK-801-induced psychosis exerted a significant alteration in the above-mentioned behavioral parameters.
Furthermore, ACE also showed a reversal of a significant increase in DA, 5-HT, and NA levels and a decrease in GABA, glutamate, and glycine levels in the brain associated with improved psychotic function against MK-801- mice.
Moreover, ACE-treated mice showed a substantial reduction in acetylcholinesterase, D-amino acid oxidase enzyme activity, and nitrite levels associated with oxidative stress elevated by the administration of MK-801.
Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Treatment with ACE once for 14 days (1 and 2 g/kg) significantly ameliorated the behavioral symptoms in experimentally induced psychos by of neuromodulation and decreased oxidative stress".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of psychosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue and organs caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.
There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where the cancer begins.
As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact causes of cancers. however many researchers believe, that exposure to environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.
Healthy cells become cancerous if they grow uncontrollably and disorderly out of range of a normal healthy cell population which can only divide between 40 and 60 times.
According to the Hayflick limit theory, most cell survival is totally dependent on the telomeres on the ends of each chromosome.
Every time, healthy cells undergo division, the telomeres are shortened. Once the telomeres shorten to a critical length, the cells will die off. However, cancer cells can divide indefinitely.
According to the statistics provided by the UK Cancer Research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.
Sadly, more than 4 in 10 cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of the Human Development Index (HDI).
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistical composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, according to the definition.
In 2018, over 1,7 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the US, and approximately over 600,000 patients will die from the disease.
The four most common types of cancer, occurring worldwide are lung, female breast, bowel, and prostate cancer.
Early diagnosis as always is the best way to improve the survival rate. Depending on type of cancer, most cancers have a 100% 5 years survival rate, if they are diagnosed at the stages of 0 and 1.
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belonging to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
In finding a natural whole for the prevention of malignant tumors, researchers examined the effects of pierisin, a protein purified from pupae of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae on the human gastric cancer TMK-1 cell line and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).
According to the results of differentiation,

According to the results of differentiation,
* Pierisin showed cytotoxic effects in all the human cells tested, with IC50 values ranging from 0.043 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml.
* Compared to other cancer cell lines, the cervical carcinoma cell line, HeLa, was the most sensitive to pierisin, showing a 1000-fold less IC50 value than that of HUVECs.
* Furthermore, pierisin clearly induced apoptotic cell death in most cancer cell lines and HUVECs through multiple different pathways including the proinflammatory, tumor-suppressive, and immunomodulatory pathways.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Pierisin may thus be a promising new candidate for cancer therapy".
Taken together, cabbage may process anti-cancer activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Dandelion Root #Extract (DRE) Suppresses Proliferation and Migration of #GastricCancer< Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.
The stomach plays a critical role in assisting the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.
Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.
Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.
According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man's lifetime is about 1 in 95.
Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic.
However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight, loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.
The causes of gastric cancer are debatable, but some researchers suggested that people with chronic
gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop the disease.
Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking.
According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and viruses, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development.
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists examined the effects of dandelion root extract (DRE) on gastric cancer.
According to the tested assays,
* Dandelion root extract (DRE) specifically and effectively suppresses proliferation and migration in human gastric cells without inducing toxicity in noncancerous cells.
* Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are known to promote tumorigenesis in many cancer types and are downregulated by the injection of DRE, including the lncRNA colon cancer-associated transcript-1 (CCAT1) in the promotion of tumor progression.
* More importantly, the downregulation of CCAT1 was found to inhibit the proliferation and migration of gastric cells.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "DRE exerted its function in GC cells partially through targeting CCAT1. This data will provide a basis on which further research in cancer treatment through DRE can be executed".
Taken together, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by abnormal cell growth that begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of an organ caused by the alternation of cell DNA with an unknown nature.
Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process that happens daily to replace millions of dead cells. In some cases, acceleration of cells growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cut, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells are back to a normal rate again regulated growth inhibitors.
In other words, healthy cell division is limited to a number of cycles. Compared to normal cells, cells with alternation of DNA or cancer cells can grow indefinitely.
Unfortunately, skin cells sometimes overgrow while healing, leading to scars on the skin.
At the early, most people with cancer are asymptomatic, however, at the latter, due to the size and the tumor, patients may experience general cancer symptoms such as unintended weight loss, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort and loss of appetite, and localized symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding.
Cancer can be classified by the types of cells that have become malignant.
* Carcinoma
Carcinoma is a malignant tumor found in anywhere of the epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures, and glands.
* Sarcoma
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that arises from malignantly connective tissue cells originating from embryonic germ cells or bone, cartilage, and fat tissues and cells.
* Lymphoma and leukemia
Hematopoietic cells are multipotent stem cells that give rise to all types of blood cell, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets become cancerous.
* Germ cell tumor
Cancer derived from pluripotent cells. In adults, these are most often found in the testicle and ovary but are more common in babies and young children.
* Blastoma
Blastoma is cancer derived from immature "precursor" or embryonic tissue, mostly in children.
The causes of cancer are not identified. However, the most prevalent factors associated with the cancer onset include age, family history, long-term exposure to certain cancer-induced chemicals, use of tobacco, and excessive alcohol drinking,..... the list goes on and on, depending on the type of cancer.
Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factor that causes cancer in the Western world may be associated with widespread obesity.
Dr. Karen Basen-Engquist, in the evaluation of the obesity risk of cancer, said, "In the United States, approximately 85,000 new cancer cases per year are related to obesity. Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".And, "High priorities for future research involve additional work on the underlying mechanisms, and trials to examine the effect of lifestyle behavior change and weight loss interventions on cancer and intermediate biomarkers".
The findings strong indicated the risk of cancer is increased substantially in obese.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of invasive tumors, researchers examined the potential effects of cranberry on cancer prevention and treatment.
According to the review of the medical literature by searching the database of PubMed, cranberry and/or its components may act as chemopreventive agents, that diminish the parameters associated with the onset of cancer, including the inhibition of cells oxidation and inflammatory-related processes, in vitro.
Cell proliferation angiogenesis and metastasis involved in cancer cell invasion were also attenuated by the administration of cranberry's apoptotic activity.
Dr. Mantzorou M, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote, " Cranberry could be considered as a conglomeration of potential effective anticancer drug-like compounds".
Additionally, in chemical constituents analysis, cranberry showed an inhibitory action of against cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon, bladder, prostate, glioblastoma, and lymphoma.
The efficacy of anti-cancer activity was attributed to the chemical compounds works synergistically to result in cellular death induction via apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy, reduction of cellular proliferation, the elevation of reactive oxygen species, and modification of cytokine and signal transduction pathways, similar to those of aforementioned study.
Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
