Platelet aggregation refers to the platelet-to-platelet adhesion in the blood that forms a clot.

The study compared the effect of extracts prepared from each sample including an aqueous (juice or pressed solubles) and/or methanol-soluble fraction. at a final concentration of 1 mg/ml from samples of 19 fruits and 26 vegetables, including green beans representative of the local diet.

Extracts of green beans showed an inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ADP and arachidonic acid, in a concentration-dependent manner, compared to other extracts.

Compared to methanolic extracts of grapes prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and diluted prothrombin time (dPT) and raspberry prolonged APTT are higher compared to those of green beans.

Taken together, green beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of platelet aggregation, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of esophageal cancer, some scientists suggested.

Esophageal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the esophagus. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.

According to statistics, in 1028 over 17,000 adults in the United States will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

In other words, injection of green tea plus ADM was more effective in inducing cell death in Eca109/ABCG2 multi-drug resistance cancer cells through expression ROS and ADM in enhancing elevation of cytotoxic activity compared to ADM treatment alone.

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, and overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

Out of trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, only a few cause diseases in humans. Believe it or not, our gut contains trillion microorganisms, most of which are bacteria.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection are redness and heat, swelling, fever, and pain at the site of infection.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of bacterial infection, researchers examined the effect of cranberry antibacterial activity against uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (UPEC).

According to the tested analysis, the whole extract showed a powerful antibacterial activity against UPEC compared to the selected fractions that presented a different behavior.

Myricetin and quercitrin demonstrated the highest decrease in E. coli biofilm formation compared with the control and other fractions.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Apart from proanthocyanidins, other compounds, mainly flavonoids, can act against E. coli biofilm formation and also modify UPEC surface hydrophobicity in vitro."

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit the oxidation caused by reactive oxygen species. Antioxidants also play a critical role in the prevention of the oxidative stress induced by a chain of reactions as a result of over-expression of free radicals that can only be stopped with the expression of antioxidants produced by the host or from dietary sources.

More precisely, oxidative stress is caused by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants.

Epidemiologically, over time, oxidative stress induces damage to protein, lipid, and cell DNA that leads to the incidences of chronic disease, including heart disease, RA, and cancers.

In cancer, antioxidants are molecules that process the capability to protect healthy cells against oxidative stress-induced DNA alternation.

In cardiovascular disease, antioxidants reduce the fragility and “permeability” in capillaries and prevent the clotting up of arteries due to oxidation.

In RA, antioxidant inhibits the rheumatoid joint fluid containing significant amounts of hydroxyl radical.

The overexpression of free radicals is bad. However, free radicals generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of the energy of essential molecules and boosting the immune system. According to the free radical theory, over time, the damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species (ROS), can also induce skin aging.

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effects of lycopene on vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in a young healthy subject.

The study included blood collection of 18 men and 9 women with restriction of lycopene-containing foods for 1-wk (LYr), after a fasting state, and 3 hours after an HFm and a low-fat meal (LFm).


Compared to the blood sample collected on pre-and post-meals following 1-wk of 80 mg/day lycopene supplementation (LYs) under continued dietary LYr in the fasting state, researchers found that
* LYs compared with LYr not only evoked a >2-fold increase in plasma lycopene but also increased plasma beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol.

* However, LYs did not affect plasma nitrate/nitrite, a biomarker of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, a biomarker of lipid oxidative stress, vascular- and intercellular-adhesion molecules or C-reactive protein, the biomarkers of inflammation.

In other words, the HFm-induced dyslipidemic state was inhibited by LYr or LYs but did not affect the plasma malondialdehyde, C-reactive protein, or adhesion molecules.

The results suggested that 1-wk of LYs increased plasma lycopene, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol do not have an effect on the plasma lipid-soluble antioxidant pool, biomarkers of vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in the fasted state as well as during dyslipidemia induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects.

In other words, plasma lycopene consumption inhibits dyslipidemia but does not affect the changes of parameters induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects in the short term.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ginger may have a potential and profound effect in regulating the expression of metabolic syndrome, some scientists suggested.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with the onset of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

Researchers suggested that people who have 3 of 5 above conditions are at substantial risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

There is no single cause of the metabolic syndrome. some conditions epidemiologically are associated with overweight or obesity, insulin resistance, inactive lifestyle, and poor diet.

According to the statistics, In the US, approximately, over 23 percent of adults have metabolic syndrome, and many of them do not know they have it.

In fact, metabolic syndrome can be reversed through a healthy lifestyle choice, accompanied by weight loss.

Dr. Christos Pitsavos, the cardio team at the University of Athens and Society for Biomedical Diabetes Research, wrote, "Several epidemiologic studies and some clinical trials, it has been suggested that people with the metabolic syndrome may benefit from intensive lifestyle modifications including dietary changes and adopting a physically more active lifestyle."

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers assess the effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and/or components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) by searching the database of medical literature.

10 studies met the inclusion criteria with a total of 490 individuals included in the review.

Ginger showed a significant beneficial effect on glucose control and insulin sensitivity.

Ginger significantly reduced fasting blood glucose in T2DM patients (-21.24; 95% CI: -33.21, -9.26; P < 0.001) and three-month average plasma glucose concentration.

Furthermore, ginger also displayed significant effects of improvement of lipid profile.

Dr. Zhu J, the lead scientist said, in the final report "Based on the negligible side effects and obvious ameliorative effects on glucose control, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profile, ginger may be a promising adjuvant therapy for T2DM and MetS".

Moreover, in order to gain more evidence of ginger's anti-metabolic syndrome effect, a study to determine the individual and concomitant effect of 6-week water-based exercise and oral ginger supplement on markers that are related to metabolic syndrome and systemic inflammation in obese women with breast neoplasms was conducted the University of Mazandaran.

40 women diagnosed with breast neoplasms were randomly assigned into four groups; placebo, exercise training, ginger supplement, and exercise training+ ginger supplement groups.

Participants in the ginger supplement group and the exercise training+ ginger supplement group have orally received 4 capsules, 7 days a week and for 6 weeks.

During the experiment, the ginger supplementation and the water-based exercise have resulted in a reduction of hs-CRP, IL-10 (inflammation), insulin, glucose, insulin resistance, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglyceride (TG); but an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and ratio HDL/LDL.

These results strongly suggested that ginger supplement plus exercise demonstrates a significant effect in reducing the fasting glucose, insulin resistance, inflammation, and lipid profile and balancing the ratio of high and low-density lipoproteins.


In other words, the water-based exercise and ginger supplement group significantly showed a larger positive effect on all outcomes, compared to the water-based exercise or ginger supplement alone groups.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.


1. Antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic activities

In the examination of the inhibition of inflammation as well as of cancer formation and growth in the lung and colon in animal models., using a-tocopherol mixture that is rich in gamma-T (gamma-TmT, which contains 57%gamma-T), found that when given in the diet at 0.3%, gamma-TmT inhibited chemically induced lung tumorigenesis in the A/J mice as well as the growth of human lung cancer cell H1299 xenograft tumors. gamma-TmT also decreased the levels of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, gamma-H2AX, and nitrotyrosine in tumors. More evident anti-inflammatory and cancer preventive activities of dietary gamma-TmT were demonstrated in mice treated with azoxymethane and dextran sulfate sodium. 2. Cancer prevention

The study of the cancer-preventive activities of tocopherols and tocotrienols, indicated that a gamma-tocopherol-rich mixture of tocopherols inhibits colon, prostate, mammary, and lung tumorigenesis in animal models, suggesting that this mixture may have a high potential for applications in the prevention of human cancer. In this review, we discuss biochemical properties of tocopherols, results of possible cancer-preventive effects in humans and animal models, and possible mechanisms involved in the inhibition of carcinogenesis. 3. Bone formation
In the investigation of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Alpha- and gamma-tocopherol, the two predominant isomers of vitamin E and their effects on bone metabolism, found that gamma-tocopherol may uncouple bone turnover, resulting in more bone formation than resorption. Vitamin E supplements in the form of alpha-tocopherol suppress serum gamma-tocopherol levels and may have negative effects on bone formation. in the study of salmon, a rich source of marine n-3 fatty acids, which may increase oxidative stress and, in turn, and its affect the antioxidant defense system in blood plasma and erythrocytes of pregnant women, found that besides, a concomitant increase in selenium and glutathione concentration, as well as glutathione peroxidase and reductase activities, were detected as the pregnancy progressed. However, tocopherols, retinol, β-carotene, and coenzyme Q(10) decreased in late pregnancy. 10. Cognitive effects
In the examination of the relation of all plasma vitamin E forms and markers of vitamin E damage (α-tocopheryl quinone, 5-nitro-γ-tocopherol) to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Within the AddNeuroMed-Project, plasma tocopherols, tocotrienols, α-tocopheryl quinone, and 5-nitro-γ-tocopherol were assessed in 168 AD cases, 166 MCI, and 187 cognitively normal (CN) people, found that compared with cognitively normal subjects, AD and MCI had lower levels of total tocopherols, total tocotrienols, and total vitamin E. In multivariable-polytomous-logistic regression analysis, both MCI and AD cases had 85% lower odds to be in the highest tertile of total tocopherols and total vitamin E, and they were, respectively, 92% and 94% less likely to be in the highest tertile of total tocotrienols than the lowest tertile. Further, both disorders were associated with increased vitamin E damage. Amyloid beta (Aβ or Abeta) is the main component of the amyloid plaques that cause the gradual death of neurons, leading to the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia or neurodegenerative disease found in the elderly.

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.


According to the statistics, the disease is most prevalent in the elderly. Approximately 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's. 15.9 million family caregivers provide an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion to people with dementia worldwide.

Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the neurons of the brain over time. However, less than 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic predisposition. Patients with such mutated genes on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1 are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.

More precisely, Alzheimer's disease is caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.


Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

Dementia is a group of neurodegenerative diseases caused by a decline in mental ability in the older population that is severe enough to interfere with daily life, such as memory loss.

Compared to dementia, neurological disorders are a class of brain diseases associated with reduced function of the brain, depending on the region of the neurons that were affected.

Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi said, "The inheritance of AD exhibits a dichotomous pattern. On one hand, rare mutations in APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2 virtually guarantee early-onset (<60 years) familial AD, which represents ∼5% of AD. On the other hand, common gene polymorphisms, such as the ε4 and ε2 variants of the APOE gene, can influence susceptibility for ∼50% of the common late-onset AD".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extract (CE) on Alzheimer's disease (AD)associated with the aggregation and toxicity of proteins β-amyloid (Aβ).

The study is to compare the effects of berry crude extracts (CE) that yield anthocyanins-free (ACF) and anthocyanins-enriched (ACE) extracts.

According to the tested analysis, the berry ACEs (at 100 μg/mL) showed superior free radical scavenging, reactive carbonyl species trapping, and anti-glycation effects, compared to ACFs.

Furthermore, the berry ACEs at a dose of 100 μg/mL inhibited both thermal- and reactive carbonyl species (methylglyoxal; MGO)-induced Aβ fibrillation associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

In BV-2 microglia, the berry ACEs at a dose of 20 μg/mL reduced H₂O₂-induced reactive oxygen species production and lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide species.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The free radical scavenging, reactive carbonyl trapping, anti-glycation, anti-Aβ fibrillation, and microglial neuroprotective effects of these berry extracts warrant further in vivo studies to evaluate their potential neuroprotective effects against AD.".

Taken together, berries including cranberry processed abundantly anthocyanins may be considered remedies for the prevention of β-Amyloid Aggregation against the onset of AD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
