Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth that begins at the inner lining of the colon or rectum.
Most cases of colorectal cancers are diagnosed at the later stage due to the tendency of the slow-growing in nature. According to the statistics, only about 39% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage.
Some patients with polyps may not experience colon cancer 20 years later as the gradually enlarging polyps eventually penetrate the bowel wall.
At the advanced stage, primary colon cancer is found to induce secondary metastasis in the liver, lungs, brain, and peritoneum through blood and fluid circulation.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately,
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US. Colorectal cancer also will cause the death of 51,020 Americans.
The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is1 in 22 (4.49%) for men compared to 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
The 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%. However, if cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs or the regional lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 71%.
Out of many factors associated with colorectal cancer risk, some researchers suggested that the prevalence of obesity associated with the promotion of a high-fat diet may be the major culprit that causes the rise of colon cancer in the US.
Dr. O'Neill AM, the lead scientist said, "The increasing worldwide incidence of colon cancer has been linked to the spread of the Western lifestyle and in particular consumption of a high-fat Western diet. In this study, our objectives were to establish mouse models to examine the effects of high-fat Western diet-induced obesity on the growth of human colon cancer tumor xenografts, and to examine potential mechanisms driving obesity-linked human colon cancer tumor growth".
And, "human colon cancer growth is accelerated in animals that are obese and insulin-resistant due to the consumption of an HFWD".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer, researchers examined the anti-cancer activity of s-allyl-l-cysteine-sulfoxide (SACS)/alliin.
According to the tested assays, SACS showed a higher affinity towards the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR).
In other words, SACS inhibited the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). associated with facilitating cancer cell growth and proliferation.
In order to reveal more information about alliin colonic protective effects, researchers compared the protective efficiency of three garlic powders with increased levels of alliin, obtained from bulbs grown in soils with different levels of sulfur fertilization, against DNA damage.
According to the comet assay, garlic powders were administered to rats for 2 weeks (5% of the diet), DNA damage induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in the colon were also decreased strongly by the three garlic powders.
Interestingly, these decreases were not correlated to the allicin content of the garlic powders.
These results suggested that all compounds in the garlic including alliin worked synergistically to promote the efficacy of the whole food.
Sadly, feeding garlic powders protected the colon cells against DNA damage but did not modify the genotoxic activity of the direct-acting carcinogen methyl nitrosourea in the colon.
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplement for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer with no side effects, responding to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry Powders Process Anti-Hyperglycemia Associated withReduced Risk of Diabetics Complications, Researchers Say
Kyle J, Norotn
Diabetes is a medical and chronic disease characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.
The disease is either caused by cells in the pancreas that died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, such as type 2 diabetes.
Most cases of type 1 diabetes are associated with a gene mutation that causes the immune to attack the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
Acquired diabetes in most cases is caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, including high-fat diet and physical inactivity.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 23.1 million people in the United States are living with diagnosed diabetes, costing the healthcare system more than $245 billion per year.
Sadly, there is an estimation that another 7.2 million people have diabetes but remain undiagnosed, accompanied by another 84.1 million adults 18 years and older with prediabetes.
Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose in the blood.
Most cases of hyperglycemia are a result of poor management of blood glucose including uncontrol diet, physical inactivity, miss-medication and improper use of insulin injection.
Uncontrolled diabetes or hyperglycemia over the long term can lead to diabetic complications, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, pain, polypharmacy, and functional disability.
Long-term elevated glucose values above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) has been found to induce symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, fatigue, and headache.
In severe cases, some patients may also experience life-threatening complications such as fruity-smelling breath, shortness of breath, weakness, confusion, and coma.
Dr in the study of hyperglycemia in the aging population wrote, "Higher levels of Sirt1 and PGC-1α and increased expression of gluconeogenesis pathway genes are found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice. Increased Sirt6 abundance is found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice, which might increase DNA damage repair".
And, "With aging, lower Sirt1 abundance and activity, increased acetylated histone modifications and Sirt7 levels, and NOR methylation is found. Thus, whereas in normal aging cell metabolism is reduced, in the diabetic mice a compensatory mechanism may elevate Sirt1 and Sirt6 levels, increasing gluconeogenesis and DNA repair from the oxidative damage caused by hyperglycemia".
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, which is closely related to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes complications, researchers examined the effect of aqueous solutions of two different cranberry powders (CP and CP-SAB) on hyperglycemia.
In vitro, in vitro CP and CP-SAB administration showed a significant inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) associated with the management of hyperglycemia linked to type 2 diabetes.
Low levels of α-amylase have been found in patients with diabetes.
α-glucosidase is associated with the digestion of carbohydrates is elevated in patients with diabetes
According to the chemical analysis, the efficacy of CP and CP-SAB that inhibits hyperglycemia was probably attributed to the chemical constituents p-Coumaric acid and quercetin derivatives, the main phenolic compounds identified in the cranberry powders.
Furthermore, increased with increased dose (1-5 mg/mL) of CP-SAB exerted the increased α-glucosidase inhibitory activity from 60% to 100%.
At 5 mg/mL, CP-SAB exerted a maximum of 40% inhibition against α-amylase.
Levels of ACE were also significantly inhibited by CP-SAB at the concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL sample concentrations.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These in vitro results indicate the potential of cranberry powders as a dietary supplement and food-based strategies for potential hyperglycemia management".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the management of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthy Food #Broccoli' SFN Induces Cell Apoptosis and Cell Cycle Arrests in Lung Cancer, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
The lung-formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.
Additionally, the lung also processes other abilities in protecting our body against disease, including
* By balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.
* By removing small blood clots the lung protects the body against the forming of air embolisms.
* The airflow produced by the lungs also helps us to speak.
* The lung also protects against the infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.
Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.
Lung cancer is a chronic medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung tissue.
The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.
The exact cause of lung cancer is not identified. However, epidemiologically, smoking, second smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, family history, people who have lung disease, and excessive drinking are some prevalent factors associated with lung cancer development.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, lung cancer accounts for 14% of all new cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2018, there were about 234,030 new cases of lung cancer (121,680 in men and 112,350 in women). Lung cancer also caused the death of 83,550 men and 70,500 women in the same year.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive role of SFN through the inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC) associated with the regulation of DNA expression, in two different lung cancer cells by in vitro and in vivo mouse models.
According to the experimental results from A549 and H1299 lung cancer cells were treated with SFN for 48h,
* SFN inhibited HDAC activity and increased the levels of acetylated histones H3 and H4 involved in cell death in all two lung cancer cells.
* Furthermore, SFN induced cancer cell apoptosis, increased the accumulation of cells at G0/G1 and G2/M, and arrested cells at the S phase.
* Moreover, SFN also suppressed lung cancer growth in a xenograft mouse model in vivo.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " the chemopreventive effect of SFN is associated with inhibition of HDAC activity, thereby attenuating lung cancer growth. Therefore, these findings suggest that SFN may be a therapeutic agent for lung cancer through the inhibition of HDAC".
Taken altogether, broccoli processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

#Honey Inhibits the Degradation of Aggrecan and Collagen-II Associated with Osteoarthritis (OA)
Kyle J, Norton
In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have an herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, according to studies.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic inflammatory joint disease characterized by the breaking down of joint cartilage and the underlying bone.
Genetic predisposition, overweight, obesity, injury, and overuse of the joints are the most common risk factor associated with the onset of the disease.
Occupation with the repetitive movements of the joint is most affected by the disease.
Interestingly, osteoarthritis symptoms can come and go throughout the day and vary from person to person. The weather change has been one of the most complaints that trigger the symptoms of OA in the elderly.
Most common symptoms, according to epidemiological studies include joint pain, tenderness, and lack of flexibility and stiffness.
Some osteoporotic patients may also experience symptoms of grating sensation and bone spurs.
If you experience some of the above symptoms, you may have osteoarthritis.
Some researchers suggested that obesity may be one of the major risk factors besides the occupation with the repetitive movement of osteoarthritis in the Western world.
Dr. Lauren K. King, the lead scientist in the investigation of obesity & osteoarthritis, wrote, "The most significant impact of obesity on the musculoskeletal system is associated with osteoarthritis (OA), a disabling degenerative joint disorder characterized by pain, decreased mobility, and negative impact on quality of life".
And, "Obesity is associated with the incidence and progression of OA of both weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing joints, to rate of joint replacements as well as operative complications".
The finding strongly indicated the risk of osteoarthritis is increased by many folds in the obese population, compared to those with a healthy weight.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
In the concerns of widespread osteoarthritis (OA), a chronic degenerative joint disease, researchers investigated chrysin, a natural flavonoid extracted from honey and propolis anti-inflammatory effects.
The study included human OA chondrocytes pretreated with chrysin (1, 5, 10 μM) for 2 h and subsequently stimulated with IL-1β, an inflammatory cytokine for 24 h.
Injection of chrysin exerted a strong inhibition activity against the degradation of aggrecan and collagen-II.
Chrysin significantly inhibited the IL-1β-induced production of inflammatory cytokines such as degradation of c of NO and PGE2; expression of COX-2, iNOS.
Furthermore, chrysin also reduced the expression of matrixes such as MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-13, and enzymes ADAMTS-4, and ADAMTS-5 associated with the progression and destruction of joints in early osteoarthritis.
In the depth analysis researchers also found that chrysin dramatically blocked IL-1β-stimulated IκB-α degradation in the activation of protein NF-κB-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines.
The results suggested that chrysin inhibits the progression of OA through several mechanisms, including enzymes and proteins involving the destruction of joint tissues.
Taken altogether, honey processed with a bioactive compound chrysin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of OA, with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical I3C and 3,3'-#Diindolylmethane Exhibit Liver Protection through Pleiotropic Mechanism, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient that processes liver protective activity with no side effects, according to studies.
Hepatic protection is an action in which substances including medicine and herbal remedy were used to protect the liver against damage.
The liver is the largest internal organ with a function that filters the blood from the intestinal tract before passing it to the heart and other parts of the body.
Additionally, the liver also produces bile to aid digestion and cholesterol to build strong cell membranes, produce of vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a broad term including any problems that cause the reduced function of the liver.
There are many risk factors that liver problems. Most cases of liver disease are diagnosed in the advanced stage, it takes years to develop.
In other words, symptoms of liver disease can be felt only after more than 75% liver is damaged.
The most common risk factors are genetic predisposition, viruses, and long-term excessive alcohol drinking.
Non-alcoholic fatty disease (NAFLD), a leading cause of cirrhosis, is one of the most common liver disease found in the Western world, affecting up to 25% of people in the United States.
3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.
In the urgency of finding a natural compound with liver protective activity, researchers examined the pharmacokinetics of I3C and its derivatives, including 3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM multiple protective roles in the processes of chronic liver diseases.
Administration of I3C and its derivatives relieved liver oxidative stress by regulating transcriptional factors and their respective signaling pathways associated with the synthesis of DNA to influence the activation, proliferation, and apoptosis of target cells.
Furthermore, indoles not only modulated the enzymes that are relevant to hepatitis viral replication, lipogenesis, and the metabolism associated with liver function but also protected the liver against hepatotoxicity (ethanol and some hepatotoxic substances).
In other words, the indoles exerted hepatoprotection by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines against microbial-induced liver injuries.
Based on the findings, Dr. Wang SQ, the lead scientist said, "Indoles, especially I3C and DIM as phytochemicals, exert anti-fibrosis, anti-tumor, anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory, detoxification and anti-inflammation effects on hepatic protection through pleiotropic mechanism".

#Acetone Extract Found in #Herbal #Fennel Inhibits Symptoms of Estrogenic Deficiency Related Diseases, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Fennel may have a potential effect in increased plant base estrogenic levels in reduced risk of estrogen-related diseases, some scientists suggested.
Estrogen is a primary female sex hormone, responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...
In the evaluation of the fennel estrogenic effect in inhibiting the increased ectopic uterine motility in facilitated symptoms including pain in primary dysmenorrhea, researchers found that compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the induction of severe adverse effects used for treatment in long-term therapy, application of fennel essential oil (FEO) of LD(50, 1326 mg/kg) in a rat model, exerted a therapeutic effect in reduced expression of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) in induced muscle contraction.
Further analysis suggested that fennel essential oil reduced the intensity of oxytocin and PGE(2) induced uterine muscle contractions significantly (25 and 50 microg/ml for oxytocin and 10 and 20 microg/ml PGE(2), respectively without inducing mortality in tested subjects.
Abnormal production of prostaglandins E2 was found to be associated with the intensity of symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea, including vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and excessive uterine contraction.
According to the P. G. Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, acetone extract isolated from Foeniculum vulgare Mill., seeds at different dose levels (50/ug, 150/ug and 250/ug/100gm body wt.) exerted a potential and positive estrogenic activity in increased nucleic acids and protein concentration and organ weights, particularly in the medium and high doses.
The above differentiation were supported by the study of "Effect of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. seed extract on the genital organs of male and female rats" conducted by Dr. Malini T and colleagues.
According to the results, fennel estrogenic effect in oral administration of acetone extract of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) seeds for 15 days in male rats, exerted a significant malformation of the male reproductive tract including decreased in testes through inhibited Leydig cell production of testosterone and disrupted fluid reabsorption in the efferent ductules via the ERα and vas deferens in transported sperm from the testicle to the urethra.
Moreover, the application of the extract also demonstrated an increased volume of seminal vesicles and the prostate gland and decreased activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase in all these regions, including bones, intestines, pancreas, and kidneys.
In female rats, ingestion of acetone extract for 10 days showed a strong effect in the expression of estrogenic effect through the observation by vaginal cornification, the test of the appearance of cornified epithelial cells in a vaginal smear for confirmation of the presence of high levels of estrogen.
The application also catalyzed the imbalanced production of sex hormones in the female estrus cycle.
At moderate doses, the seeds caused an increase in the weight of mammary glands by overexpression of estrogen circulation in precipitated a negative effect in regulated systemic mammogenic factors (prolactin, growth hormone), and directed influence of the mammary tissue, such as stromal components and epithelial cells.
At higher doses, fennel seeds increased the weight of the oviduct, endometrium, myometrium, cervix, and vagina.
Taken together, fennel may be considered a functional food for reduced symptoms of estrogen deficiency syndrome and combined with the standard medicine for the treatment of estrogenic-related diseases.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits Oxidativestress Against the Risk of Liver Ischemia/Reperfusion (I/R) Injury, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Liver formed part of the detoxed organs in the human body is the largest internal organ that filters the blood from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.
The liver also plays an essential role in producing cholesterol to build a strong cell wall, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aid the digestive function in food absorption detoxifying toxic chemicals, and metabolizes drugs.
Liver disease is a process of reduced function of the liver acutely or gradually.
Liver cancer is a chronic liver disease associated with irregular cell growth that starts in the cells on the surface of the liver's inner lining tissue, before penetrating into deeper layers to form tumors through cell proliferation.
Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.
According to the Canadian Liver Foundation, approximately one in ten Canadians, or more than 3 million people in Canada has some form of liver disease.
Believe it or not, 95% of deaths from liver disease are due to chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer, including 25% of obese patients.
The most common signs and symptoms of liver disease are jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine color, pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool and tendency to bruise easily.
If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms that do not heal in a short period of time, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antioxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential compound that processes the liver-protective effects, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin on liver ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.
According to the analysis, curcumin protects the liver by reducing the liver's oxidative stress and inflammation that can lead to ischemia-reperfusion injury in hepatic surgery and transplantation
Furthermore, mitochondria dysfunction associated with abnormal cell metabolism e in the liver, and liver Kupffer cells (KCs) activation associated with liver inflammation that causes IR were also inhibited by the injection of curcumin.
Vascular cell adhesion molecule overexpression and polymorphonuclear neutrophil injury-induced inflammation and immune-inflammatory response induced liver injury were also decreased by the curcumin administration.
Moreover, the efficacy of curcumin in the protection of the liver through the aforementioned activity was also found to be associated with the suppression of pathways in the reduction of liver ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Based on the findings researchers said, "This paper gives an overview of the protective effects of curcumin against I/R injury in the liver and discusses the studies that have linked biological functions of curcumin with liver I/R injury improvement".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of ischemia-reperfusion injury, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
