#Turmeric's #Curcumin Protects the Heart Against Cardiac Dysfunction during Hypertrophy, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is a medical condition characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle, leading to reduced function of the heart in pumping blood throughout the body.
The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels of the body to provide oxygen and nutrients and remove metabolic wastes.
The heart muscles make up the bulk of the heart’s mass and control the heartbeat with high contractile strength and endurance.

Cardiac muscle also has a unique function to regulate heart performance by spreading electrochemical signals to all cells in the heart.

Damage to the heart muscle has been found to induce blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; and heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias).

In some cases, heart muscle disease also is found in patients with congenital heart defects.

The most common symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy are breathlessness with exertion or at rest, legs, ankles, and feet swelling. persistent fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting, particularly, in the symptoms of irregular heartbeats.

Conventionally, treatments of cardiac hypertrophy totally depend on the type of heart disease, including lowering blood pressure medication such as ACE inhibitors; lowering the heart rate, such as beta-blockers, normalizing heart beating, and balancing electrolytes in the body.

Making a healthy lifestyle change and moderate exercise may also be recommended by your doctor.

Cardiac hypertrophy has been found in patients with uncontrol high blood pressure accompanied by tobacco smoking. The condition is a common risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Thomas Kahan, the lead scientist wrote, "Myocardial hypertrophy is also part of the remodeling process following an acute myocardial infarction, and is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure caused by systolic and/or diastolic LV dysfunction".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of heart failure, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin an anti-hypertrophic potential.

According to the tested analysis, curcumin encapsulated by carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) nanoparticle conjugated to a myocyte-specific homing peptide was effective in the regression of cardiac hypertrophy in a rat (Rattus norvegicus) model.

Curcumin at a low dose of 5 mg/kg body weight compared to free Curcumin at 35 mg/kg body weight. showed a higher cardiac bioavailability, compared to other concentrations.

Furthermore, cardiac function during hypertrophy was significantly improved by the application of Curcumin/CMC-peptide by inhibiting the hypertrophy marker genes (ANF, β-MHC) and apoptotic mediators (Bax, Cytochrome-c) and activity of apoptotic markers (Caspase 3 and PARP) in the lower doses compared to higher doses.

Targeted Curcumin treatment significantly lowered p53 expression which is associated with pro-apoptotic function in cardiac hypertrophy.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Curcumin and also attributes towards probable mechanistic insight into its therapeutic potential as a cardio-protective agent for regression of cardiac hypertrophy".

Taken together, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiac hypertrophy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Honey Shows A Strong Effect on Serum Levels of Cholesterol and Cognitive Function, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of depression according to studies.
Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think, and act.

Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief, or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry inducing depressive syndrome.

The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, and loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering, and thoughts of harming themselves.

Readers may find other symptoms not be included in the article including behavior and physical symptoms.

According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread depression in the Western world may be associated with life stress at work and home.

Dr. T. Plieger, the lead scientist in examining the effects of psychological stress on depression wrote, "A significantly closer relation between depression and life stress than between burnout and life stress was found in the healthy (z = 3.01, p = .003) as well as in the depressed sample".

"This finding was supported in both samples by means of a path analytic approach where the associations between life stress, burnout, and depression were controlled for the possible mediator and moderator effects, also considering the influence of age".

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

Scientists searching for an alternative remedy for the treatment of depression with no side effects examined the effects of honey on several studies through searching the database of online medical literature.

8 studies that satisfied the standard criteria and guidelines were chosen, including 2 RCTs of human subjects and 6 animal studies.

The randomized studies suggested that depressed elderly treated with a mix of honey and barely exhibited a significant decrease in depression, stress, and mood disturbances scores compared to the control group.

In menopausal women, treatment with honey or a mix of honey and pollens exerted a significant activity in the improvement of the three subscales of the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) by 68.3% and 70.9%, respectively.

The results also suggested that post-treatment demonstrates a better effect compared to pretreatment when the mixture of honey was applied.

Furthermore, the application showed similar effects on the serum levels of cholesterol, such as total, HDL, or LDL cholesterol), triglycerides, or oestradiol in both groups.

According to the survey returned participants reported that they observed improvements 3-4 days after the initiation of treatment. On a 10-point taste scale, (1 = very good and 10 = very bad) honey received an average score of 2.3, whereas a honey and pollen mix received an average score of 6.0.

Interestingly, the side effects of exhaustion and edema of the lower extremities were reported by some participants, and 2 participants were withdrawn from the study due to the taste of the mix of honey with bare powder.

In animal studies, all experiments displayed a positive effect of honey on depression. Some studies also found that honey improves depressive-like behaviors, cognitive function, and symptoms of anhedonia.

Furthermore, honey injection also showed a reduction of anxiety symptoms and an improvement in spatial memory.

Moreover, honey alone or a combination of honey and other bee products inhibited MAO enzyme activity in the liver of treated mice.

Where monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), an enzyme that metabolizes monoamines was elevated in depressed patients.

And, the anti-depressive effects were correlated to the volume of honey intake. In other words, greater improvements were associated with the increased administration of high doses of honey.

In order to reveal more information about honey depression activity, researchers examined
Tualang and Acacia honey in patients with stress-depression disorder.

Both Tualang and Acacia honey showed significant anti-depression activity by increasing the production of levels of antioxidants.

However, Tualang honey consumption was found to be more suitable in regulating weight-related effects of stress-depression disorder compared to that of Acacia honey which exerted more profound effects in alleviating depression effects and managing glucocorticoid imbalance effects of the stress-depression disorder.

Taken together, honey, particularly Tualang, and Acacia honey, used alone or combined with other bee products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of depression, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Honey Inhibits the Expression of Oxidative Stress Against the Risk of Anxiety, Memory Impairment, and Lipid Peroxidation, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, according to studies.

Oxidative stress is a medical condition associated with the overexpression of free radicals compared to low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In fact, free radicals are constantly produced in animal and human cells. The air we breathe, the things we eat, and the environment we contact are some factors that cause the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Epidemiological studies suggested that oxidative stress can induce damage to the cell, lipid, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and particularly, cancer.

How overexpression of free radicals causes damage to the cells. Researchers explained due to free radical unstable nature with unpair of electrons on the out ring of molecules, they constantly seek to donate or intercept the electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

These processes can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host body resulting in oxidative stress, a major cause of cell, lipid, and protein damage.

In spite of free radical's harmful effects, one must understand that cellular oxygen species (ROS), are necessary with a moderate amount to protect our body in the mediation of antimicrobial infection, detoxification of potentially toxic compounds, and elimination of cancerous and other life-threatening cells through cytotoxicity.

On the other hand, antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation. Antioxidants can reduce levels of free radicals and overexpression can limit the free radical function in carrying out their health benefits.

Therefore, in order to maintain good health, the levels of free radicals and antioxidants must be balanced.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the inhibition of oxidative stress examined the honey activity on oxidative stress induced by lead acetate exposure in male Wistar rats.

The study included 24 male Wistar rats randomly divided into four groups: Control group received 1 ml/kg distilled orally for 28 days; while groups II-IV received 0.2% lead in drinking water and 1 ml/kg of distilled water, 1 ml/kg of honey, 1.5 ml/kg of honey respectively for 28 days.

Before pretreatment with honey, infected rats showed a decrease in locomotor and exploratory and decreased antioxidant activity increase in anxiety, memory impairment, and lipid peroxidation.

Co-administration of honey with lead inhibited neurotoxicity observed by the improvement in memory function decreased latency period and increased time spent in the target quadrant compared to the lead-exposed animals.

Injection of honey in the lead-fed group also increased locomotion, exploration, and decreased anxiety observed by the frequency of rearing, freezing duration, and the number of lines crossed by animals.

More importantly, the administration of honey improved the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host observed by increased brain SOD, GST, and GSH activities compared to the lead-treated groups.

However, the honey pretreatment group showed no significant effect on MDA level, the oxidative stress marker.

These results suggested that honey exerted neuroprotective effects against lead-induced cognitive deficit probably by enhancing antioxidant activities without affecting the levels of MDA.

In order to reveal more information about honey antioxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of Tualang honey (TH) protective activity against oxidative stress of exercise.

The study included 20 female athletes (aged 21.3 [2.1] years; body weight [BW] 54.1 [5.7] kg) who were randomly assigned into two groups and consumed either 1.5 g/kg BW TH (high honey; HH; n = 10) or 0.75 g/kg BW TH (low honey; LH; n = 10).

Injection of Tualang honey showed a reduction of MDA in the LH group compared to the HH group. In other words, less oxidative stress was found in the LH group.

The concentrations of total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (ferric reducing antioxidant power [FRAP]) increased from baseline to 2 and 1 h after TH consumption, respectively, then the concentrations returned toward baseline at 3 h in both LH and HH groups.

MDA concentration significantly decreased (p < 0.05) from baseline to 2 h and significantly increased from 2 to 3 h in the HH group. Meanwhile, ROS levels increased significantly from 0.5 to 3 h in the HH group.

Compared to the HH group, the LH group showed similar trends but insignificant increased levels of MDA and ROS.

Taken together, honey particularly Tualang honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases related to the expression of oxidative stress with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study

#GreenTea Protects the Brain Functioning and Improves Cognition Against the Onset of Psychopathological Symptoms, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a potential and positive effect in treating mood disorders, some scientists suggested.
Mood disorder is a psychological condition characterized by an elevated mood, including mania or hypomania. In other words, a syndrome is a group of mental illnesses that can affect how a person feels and thinks of him/herself and people in public life.

A mood disorder can be classified into depression, dysthymic disorder,... and bipolar disorder depending on the symptoms of expression.

The condition not only affects the personal life of the patient but also causes psychological and financial burdens to the immediate family members as the condition can only get worse over time.

According to the statistics in 2017, over 2.6 million Canadians aged 12 and over were diagnosed with mood disorders, affecting over 8% of the general population. Sadly, about one in seven Canadians will experience a mood disorder at some point in their life.

The exact causes of mood disorders are unknown, however, there are some underlying factors that can elevate the risk of the condition, including family history, previous mood disorder, depression, certain medical conditions, and long-term use of some medication.

Symptoms of mood disorders are totally depending on the type of the syndrome. If you are experiencing symptoms of feelings of hopelessness, long-term trouble sleeping or daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, and trouble concentrating or making decisions accompanied by physical symptoms of fatigue or low energy, you may have mood disorders. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the concerns of the widespread mental disorders, researchers at Elsevier Launched an investigation to examine the effects of green tea or green tea extracts, l-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate both components of green tea on general neuropsychology, on the sub-category cognition and on brain functions in humans.

By searching the database of medical literature in PubMed for qualified studies that satisfy the guidelines and criteria set by the PRISMA statement.

Out of 21 selected studies, 4 were randomized controlled trials, 12 were cross-over studies (both assessed with an adapted version of the DELPHI list), 4 were cross-sectional studies and one was a cohort study (both assessed with an adapted version of the Newcastle-Ottawa assessment scale).

After assessing the results of all studies, researchers found that injection of green tea exerts a significant effect on psychopathological symptoms (e.g. reduction of anxiety), cognition (e.g. benefits in memory and attention), and brain function (e.g. activation of working memory seen in functional MRI).

Further analysis also suggested that the effects of green tea may be attributed to the combined influence of both caffeine and l-theanine, as separate administration of either substance is found to have a lesser impact.

Moreover, in the systematic review and meta-analysis conducted on 11 randomized placebo-controlled human studies of acute effects of tea constituents L-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate, administered alone or in combination with caffeine, on cognitive function and mood, researchers discovered that* Combined caffeine and L-theanine demonstrated some moderate effects in the first 2 hours postdose, on ladder alertness, attentional switching accuracy, and, to a lesser extent, some unisensory and multisensory attentional outcomes.

* Caffeine and L-theanine doses revealed trends toward greater change in effect size for caffeine dose than for L-theanine dose, particularly during the first hour postdose.

Additionally, in the study to evaluate whether the tea has any effect on mood and performance benefits, such as relaxation and concentration, researchers at Unilever Research and Development also conducted an extensive search of studies with consistent evidence for improved attention.

In the final report, researchers concluded after taking into account co and confounders
* Tea consumption also consistently improved self-reported alertness and arousal, whereas effects on pleasure or relaxation were less consistent.

* Intake of tea regularly has a strong impact on psychological functions such as work performance and creativity.

The findings suggested that moderate green tea consumption regularly and daily has significant acute benefits in both mood and performance in real-life situations.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that green tea containing a number of highly bioactive compounds such as caffeine, l-theanine, and epigallocatechin gallate may be considered a functional food to protect the brain functioning against the onset of mood disorders.

#Herbal #ChasteTreeBerry #Seeds Relieve the Symptoms of Arthritis by Blocking the Sensory Neuron Mediation, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Arthritis, a common condition of pain and inflammation in the joints, the tissues, affects 54 million people in the US annually alone, according to the 2013-15 statistics.

In Freund's complete adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis (AA) in a rat model. oral administration of treatment of Chaste Tree Berry seed expressed a strongly inhibited paw edema, reversed weight loss, and decreased arthritis score.

According to the Second Military Medical University, the efficacy of herbal medicine for the treatment of arthritis is the result in inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and in the regulation of enzymes responsible for inflammation and pain. expression.

In support of the above, researchers in the examined histopathological studies found that Chaste Tree Berry showed a remarkable inhibition effect in decreased synovial inflammatory infiltration and synovial lining hyperplasia in the joints in animal models.

Some also researchers suggested that Chaste tree berry reduced symptoms of the pain of arthritis patients probably is associated with the blocking the stimulus by sensory neurons ability through mediating anti-inflammatory activity and interacted with the opioid system.

Taking together, Chaste Tree Berry (seed) processed analgesic properties may be used as therapeutic potential in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of inflammatory arthritis. A large amount intake can only be prescribed by herbalists.

The Effects of #Antioxidant Omega 3 Fatty Acids in the Suppression of #CancerCachexia in Patients with #PancreaticCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice into the small intestine, the pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas, as a vital organ that is responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.

More precisely, the functions of the pancreas including
* Production of enzymes digest fat, protein, and
carbohydrates.

* The production of juices combined with juices from the intestines helps to do the job of breaking down protein, carbohydrates, and fat, therefore, it plays an important role in maintaining good health.

* Production of insulin, which is important in regulating the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even if diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate for stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.

Researchers do not know what causes pancreatic cancer. They don't even know why people with the same health conditions in the same family, are susceptible to pancreatic cancer, while others do not.

The most common risk factors of pancreatic cancer are similar to those of common cancers, including age, family history, gender, ethnicity, smoking, being overweight or obese, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

Cancer cachexia is a condition a multifactorial syndrome associated with an ongoing loss of skeletal muscle mass.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with pancreatic and bile duct cancer.

According to the administration of Racol®, an enteral nutrient formulated with omega-3 fatty acids to patients with unresectable pancreatic and bile duct cancer at 4 and 8 weeks after, pre-administration and administration showed a strong activity that increases skeletal muscle mass at both 4 and 8 weeks.

In other words, Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation protects the skeletal muscle mass associated with cancer cachexia in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer and may improve cancer.

Taken together, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the reduction of cancer cachexia in patients with pancreatic cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Tomatoes Modulate Proteins Assciated with the Immune Function Against the Onset of Low Grade Inflammatory Diseases, Studies Find

Kyle J. Norton

The immune system plays a critical role in the body's defense against infectious organisms and other pathogens.
The immune function can be classified into subsystems, including the innate and adaptive responses.

* The innate responses are the general response of the immune system that can act quickly to destroy invaders, regardless of the type of organism.

* The adaptive responses develop slowly on first exposure to a new pathogen. In some cases, it may take a week or so before the responses are effective.

However, due to the quick division of bacteria, (a single bacterium with a doubling time of one hour can produce almost 20 million progeny), therefore, our body is totally dependent on the innate immune system to destroy the invader in the first critical hours and days of exposure.

Believe it or not, if the innate immune subsystem cannot destroy the foreign invader in a set period of time from 3 -8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade inflammation in facilitating the onset of various diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and arthritis.

Immune modulation is the process of increasing and decreasing immune functioning depending on the needs of the body. In people with a weakened immune system, modulation of the immune system is found to enhance immune functioning against infectious agents.

However, in people with overactive immunity, modulation of the immune function will reduce the risk of the immune system attacking the body tissues.

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a potential compound with immune-modulatory activity, researchers examined the influence of tomato aqueous extract (TAE) on the in vitro inflammatory response.

According to the results observed by the Murine macrophages (RAW264.7 cells), PBLs, and HUVECs incubated with TAE, TAE exerted a significant effect in the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as L-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12 and chemokines such as CCL2/MCP-1, CCL3/MIP-1α.

In the endothelial cell, TAE reduced ED-associated expression of adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1) associated with the production of inflammation.

In macrophages, the production of pro-inflammatory proteins associated with low-grade inflammation also inhibited the injection of TAE.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "During acute inflammation, TAE enhances cellular alertness and therefore the sensing of disturbed immune homeostasis in the vascular-endothelial compartment. Conversely, it blunts inflammatory mediators in macrophages during chronic inflammation".

In other words, TAE protects the integrity and viability of immune cells by modulating the immune activity depending on the needs of the body.

Furthermore, in a blinded, randomized, cross-over study, male subjects on a low-carotenoid diet consumed 330 ml/day of either tomato juice (37.0 mg/day lycopene) or carrot juice (27.1 mg/day beta-carotene and 13.1 mg/day alpha-carotene) for 2 weeks with a 2-week depletion period after juice intervention, researchers compared the effects of a low-carotenoid diet supplemented with either tomato (providing high amounts of lycopene) or carrot juice (providing high amounts of alpha- and beta-carotene) on immune functions in healthy man.

According to the results from the tested assays, juice consumption showed relatively fast responses in plasma carotenoid concentrations (p < 0.0002) without being accompanied by concomitant changes in immune functions.

However, increased plasma carotenoid concentrations after vegetable juice consumption were accompanied by a time-delayed modulation of immune functions in healthy men consuming a low-carotenoid diet.

Precisely, tomato juice modulated the immune function in a delay and concentration-dependent manner.

Taken together, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the modulation of immune function based on the body's needs, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
