#Alliin From Garlic Powder Shows a Significant Effect on #Hypertension, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension, found in the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.
Blood pressure change constantly depending on the activity. Persistent hypertension over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

It also is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., approximately a million U.S. adults are living with high blood pressure, accounting to nearly half of all adults in the United States.

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications have caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Epidemiologically, family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and people with chronic kidney disease are some common risk factors involved in the increased risk of hypertension.

Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Dr. Kazim Husain wrote, "Several possible mechanisms have been proposed such as an imbalance of the central nervous system, impairment of the baroreceptors, enhanced sympathetic activity, stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, increased cortisol levels, increased vascular reactivity due to increase in intracellular calcium levels, stimulation of the endothelium to release vasoconstrictors and loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production".

And, "Loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium by angiotensin II leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production is the major contributor of alcohol-induced hypertension".

In fact, by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) in rats fed with a high cholesterol diet.

The study was carried out with rats fed a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without garlic powder and control rats were fed a normal diet for 6 weeks daily.

Rats treated with a high-cholesterol diet had significantly higher blood pressure compared to the animals receiving the control diet.

Compared to the high cholesterol and control diet group, the blood pressure of the animals receiving garlic powder was significantly lower without changing the levels of serum glucose and protein in all of the rats.

The results strongly showed support for the use of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6 % allicin) for the treatment of systolic blood pressure in hypercholesterolemic in an animal model.

Dr. Ali M the lead scientist said, "Our experimental results show that garlic may beneficially affect .....hypertension".

Taken together, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry #Extracts Induce Apoptosis of #BreastCancer Cells, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The women's breasts are made of tissues that produce milk (glandular tissue) and fat. The size of a woman's breast is totally depending on the amount of fat in the breast.
Cancer is a class of medical conditions associated with cell growth in the specific tissue of the gland and organ.

Breast cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly due to the alternation of cell DNA that often begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the advanced stage after colonizing the deeper layer of tissues to form a tumor through proliferation, invasive cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

The most common secondary cancers spread by primary breast cancer are bone, liver, lung, and brain cancer.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

The lifetime risk of getting invasive breast cancer in the North America of a woman is 1/8.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosed in the localized stage is 100%.

The exact causes of breast cancer are not identified. Epidemiologically, aging, genetic proposition, female gender, family history, history of pregnancy, dense breast tissue, and smoking are some of the most prevalent factors that are found in patients with the disease.

However, some researchers who investigated the risk of breast cancer in obese patients suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet that causes the increased incidences of obesity in the US may have a strongly negative impact to induce the onset of breast cancer in women.

Dr. Manuel Picon‐Ruiz, the lead scientist wrote, "Recent decades have seen an unprecedented rise in obesity, and the health impact thereof is increasingly evident. In 2014, worldwide, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight (body mass index [BMI], 25‐29.9 kg/m2), and of these, over 600 million were obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2)".
And, "Obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women, and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of the efficacy of cranberry phytochemical extracts significantly inhibited human breast cancer MCF-7 cells.

According to the tested differentiation, at doses of 5 to 30mg/mL, cranberry phytochemical extracts induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner, after exposure for 4h.

Compared to the control group, cranberry phytochemical extracts at a dose of 50mg/mL exhibited an additional 25% higher ratio of apoptotic cells to total cells.

Furthermore, at doses from 10 to 50mg/mL cranberry phytochemical extracts exerted significantly arrested MCF-7 cells at G0/G1 phase.

Moreover, A constant increasing pattern of the G1/S index was observed in the cranberry extract treatment group compared to the decrease of the G1/S ratio of the control group between 10 and 24h treatment.

Additionally, according to the cell cycle division analysis, cranberry extracts induced cell cycle arrest in the G1/S in MCF-7 cells was approximately 6 times higher than that of the control group.

Based on the findings, researchers after taking other factors into account said," These results suggest that cranberry phytochemical extracts possess the ability to suppress the proliferation of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, and this suppression is at least partly attributed to both the initiation of apoptosis and the G1 phase arrest".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Tomatoes Inhibit Pro-Inflammatory Expression Associated with Obesity-Related Co-Morbidities, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a disease characterized by excess body fat that has accumulated over time. A BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height, a BMI that is between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects in nearly every system of the human body, leading to an increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity continues to climb at an alarming rate, which leads to significant burdens to the country's economy and health care system.

Currently, there is no effective treatment for the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combating the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity, particularly in the economy may be the best approach to reduce the risk of obesity.

Bariatric surgery has been proposed for patients with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) due to weight-induced serious weight-related health problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure accompanied by the commitment to lifestyle changes. However, this type of surgery has posed a serious risk to many patients if the commitment to making lifelong changes in their eating and exercise habits cannot be followed through.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of obesity. Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity in the US may be correlated to the promotion of high-fat diets over the past few decades.

Dr, Golay A, the lead scientist at the Geneva University Hospital, wrote, "Epidemiological evidence suggests that a high-fat diet promotes the development of obesity and that there is a direct relationship between the amount of dietary fat and the degree of obesity".

And, "Dietary fat induces overconsumption and weight gain through its low satiety properties and high caloric density. Obese and post-obese subjects do not appear to adapt to dietary fat, and therefore fat storage is increased".

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In finding a natural and potential compound for the treatment of obesity complications, researchers investigated the effect of the potent tomato-derived antioxidant and oxidative status, and inflammatory markers in obese.

The study included the comparison of 8 obese patients (body mass index 37.5 +/- 2.5 kg/m2) with a control group of eight lean, age and gender-matched subjects (BMI 21.6 +/- 0.6 kg/m2), before and after 4 weeks of lycopene supplementation (tomato-derived Lyc-O-Mato) (30 mg daily).

Before treatment, according to the tested results, compared to control, obese subjects showed significantly reduced levels of plasma carotenoids, increased levels of CRP, and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine and oxidative stress.

Additional analysis of the findings, BMI was correlated with increased expression of CRP, proinflammation (IL-6), and oxidative stress.
The presence of high levels of IL-6 and oxidative stress was also found to correlate inversely with carotenoids (P < 0.05).

In other words, obese-induced increased levels of CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress were attributed probably to the depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

After treatment, lycopene had a significant elevation of plasma carotenoids (1.79 vs. 0.54 microg/ml) and plasma of lycopene (1.15 vs 0.23 microg/ml) in the subjects compared to the placebo group.

The results suggested that injection of lycopene improved the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the obese, thus preventing the occurrence of diseases associated with CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress without affecting the markers of inflammation and oxidation products.

Based on the results, researchers concluded, "Obese patients showed abnormally higher markers of inflammation and oxidation products and lower plasma carotenoids".

And, "The lack of reduction of pro-inflammatory markers could be attributed to the short period of the study and the small number of participants".

Taken together, tomatoes processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention of obesity-related co-morbidities, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Onions Inhibit Cholesterol Parameters Associated with Cholesterol Gallstone Formation, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol gallstones caused by the accumulation of cholesterol in the gallbladder are the most common type of gallstone with yellow in color.
Gallstone is a condition caused by the hardening of deposits of digestive fluid formed in the gallbladder.

The digestive fluid or bile is produced by the gallbladder that released into the small intestine to aid digestion.

If the cholesterol gallstone blocks the gallbladder duct, it can induce symptoms of cudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the upper right portion of your abdomen and intensifying pain in the center of your abdomen, and pain between your shoulder blades and right shoulder.

Some patients may also experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

Conventionally, surgery for cholesterol gallstones is only for patients who have experienced symptoms of pain.

Some researchers suggested there are evidence that the rise of cholesterol gallstone in the US may
be correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Yongsoon Park wrote, "Patients with cholesterol gallstone consumed more lipid, animal lipid, beef, pork, and fried food than those with pigment gallstones and control, while patients with pigment gallstone consumed more carbohydrate and noodles than patients with cholesterol gallstone and control".

And, "consumption of fat from meat and fried foods increased the risk of cholesterol gallstone, and intake of carbohydrate from noodles increased the risk of pigment gallstone".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a closely related of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the prevention of cholesterol gallstone formation, researchers evaluated the anti-lithogenic effect of a combination of dietary fenugreek seeds and onion.

The study included Lithogenesis induced mice fed with a high (0.5%) cholesterol diet (HCD) for 10 weeks with Fenugreek (12%) and onion (2%) included individually and in combination in this HCD.

According to the tested analysis,
* Fenugreek, onion, and their combination reduced the incidence of cholesterol gallstones by 75%, 27%, and 76%, respectively.

*Total cholesterol content in mice fed with Fenugreek, onion, and their combination was also reduced by 38-42%, 50-72%, and 61-80%, respectively.

* These results have a strong effect on the reduction of cholesterol/phospholipid ratio involved in gallstone formation in serum, liver, and bile.

* The cholesterol saturation index of bile was reduced from 4.14 to 1.38 and 2,33 in mice fed with the combination of fenugreek and onion respectively.

* The phospholipid and bile acid contents of the bile were increased in all groups.

* Hepatic lipid peroxidation was reduced by 19-22% and 39-45% with fenugreek, onion and their combination included in the diet along with the HCD.

* Interestingly, the increased accumulation of fat in the liver and inflammation of the gallbladder membrane produced by HCD was totally reduced by fenugreek, onion, and their combination.

Based on the results, researchers suggested that Fenugreek and onion inhibited the parameters involved in the cholesterol formation of gallstones.

After taking into account of co and confounders, Dr. Reddy RR, the lead scientist wrote, "The anti-lithogenic influence was highest with fenugreek alone, and the presence of onion along with it did not further increase this effect".

According to Dr. Vidyashankar S, the lead researcher in the study of cholesterol gallstones by dietary garlic and onion in mice fed with a lithogenic diet for 10 weeks, the efficacy of onion in the inhibition of cholesterol formation of gallstone stones was attributed to the acceleration of the regression of preformed CGS by promoting cholesterol desaturation in bile.

Taken together, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention of cholesterol gallstone formation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Chronic Injection of Dietary Phenylethyl ITCs Isolated From #CruciferousVegetables Inhibit #Cancer Cell Colony-Forming Capability and Induced Apoptosis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is one of the organs with a lack of nerve tissue, therefore liver cancer does not induce pain until the later stage.
Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells' DNA that normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to the overexpression of the overweight and obese population, liver cancer may slowly progress from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

There are a number of risk factors other than those mentioned above associated with the onset of liver cancer such as male, ethnicity, and hepatitis viral carriers.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31%, and 43% of people with liver cancer are diagnosed at stages 0 and 1.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Isothiocyanates (ITCs), the phytochemicals derived from the breakdown of glucosinolates that exist in cruciferous vegetables against liver cancer cells.

In HepG2 cells, all ITCs reduced metabolic activity in each cell line, particularly in the compound phenylethyl-ITC.

Both dietary and synthetic ITCs were found to suppress the migratory and invasive potential of all cell lines.

Furthermore, chronic injection of dietary and synthetic ITCs also inhibited the cancer cell colony-forming capability and induced apoptosis.

Phenylethyl-ITC exposure resulted in a significant generation of reactive oxygen species to stimulate the expression of cytotoxicity in the cancer cell lines.

Collectively, researchers said, "These data highlight the potential advantages of utilizing ITCs to delay the carcinogenic process and the potential for dietary and synthetic ITCs to act as anticancer agents".

Taken together, Cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Sesquiterpenoids Isolated From Herbal #Coltsfoot Exerts Neuro-Protective Activity by Inhibiting Overexpression of Oxidativestress, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Neurodegenerative disease is the class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons that occurs mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slow loss of neuron in the brain that affects the memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into an advanced stage.

According to the statistics, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, and approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.

Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia focuses on improving dementia symptoms and slowing down the progression of the disease.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the neuroprotective effect of Tussilagone (TSL) on LPS-induced neuronal cell death.

According to the tested assays, 4 sesquiterpenoids isolated from the TSL showed a significant effect against the production of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, and tumor necrosis factor-α in LPS-treated BV-2 cells.

In other words, the sesquiterpenoids inhibited the production of free radicals and proinflammatory expression associated with the BV-2 cells oxidative stress induced by LPS.

More precisely, the inhibition against the initiation of oxidative stress was attributed to the sesquiterpenoids activity in blocking the activation of the proinflammatory (NF-κB) pathway

Furthermore, the sesquiterpenoids also inhibited LPS-induced neuronal cell death in the co-culture system by inhibiting the expression of NF-κB pathway and scavenging of ROS.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "sesquiterpenoids from Tussilago farfara may have beneficial therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases through inhibition of microglial activation".

Taken together, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neurological disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Angelica, Processes Anti -Apoptotic, Anti-Proliferative and Cell Cycle Arrest Activities Against the Risk of #Cancer, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of medical and chronic diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of specific organs in the body.

Over time, the alternative cells-induced tumor may become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, depending on the grade of the tumor.

At the later stage, the most invasive tumor can induce secondary metastasis by spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes, according to the data from 2013–2015.

In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer, and 1,790 died of the disease.

In cancer, antiproliferation is a process in which the cancer cells are killed or limited from growing through many mechanisms, including the use of chemo drugs.

In the immune perspective, anti-proliferation can be carried out by activating the genes associated with cancer suppression, programming cell death,.... and cell cycle arrest.

A suppressive gene, such as pro-apoptotic p53 induces cancer cell death through cell cycle arrest. In other words, the gene inhibits tumor growth by interrupting the cancer cell cycle division.

The programmed cell death gene, such as BCL-2 induces cell death by either inducing apoptosis. In other words, If cells are no longer needed or damaged, activating an intracellular death program will cause cell death.

In phytochemicals, anti-proliferation can also be carried out by antioxidants which stimulate the free radicals overexpression to induce toxicity to tumor cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Angelica phytochemical (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone from A. purpuraefolia on cell proliferation and apoptotic cell death.

In 4 breast (MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, HS578T, and T47D), three cervical (HeLa, SiHa, and C33A) cancer cell lines, and NIH 3T3 normal cells used for the experiment, researchers found that
* (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone treatment suppresses the growth and proliferation of cancer cells at a relatively low concentration (<10 μg/ml).

* The phytochemical also induces cancer cell apoptosis at a high concentration (>50 μg/ml).

* At the concentration of 10 μg/ml, the chemical compounds also exerted a strong cell cycle arrest in the S/G2 phase.

Furthermore, according to the Western blot analysis, the concentration higher than 50 μg/ml of (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone increased the large percentage of apoptotic cells in a time-dependent manner.

Interestingly, while the (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone uses both extrinsic and intrinsic pathways to induce apoptosis, the but (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone uses only an intrinsic pathway for the same results.

In other words, the (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone also inhibited the in vitro proliferation of six other human breast and cervical cancer cell lines with different pathways.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Our data strongly suggest that (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone act as an anti-cancer supplement particularly against breast and cervical cancers by inducing cell cycle arrest in the S/G2 phase and caspase-dependent apoptosis at relatively low and high concentrations, respectively".

Taken together, Herbal Angelica processes anti-proliferative activity against cancer, pending a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
