Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes characterized by the inability of the body to use the insulin produced by the pancreas properly.
In other words, signals sent out by the hormone insulin caused by the clog-up of the insulin receptors was ignored by the cell of the muscles, body fat, and liver that process the function to convert glucose into energy.
More precisely, as the clogged-up insulin receptors ignore the signals of the hormone insulin, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the beta cells and over time causing permanent damage to the cells in the pancreas.
Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.
A 2016 joint study led by MSA University, suggested that tomato and broccoli extract affects on glucose homeostasis in high-fat diet-induced obesity in rats by regulating the adipocyte hormone Resistin.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, tomato is grown worldwide for commercial purposes
and often in the greenhouse.
According to the US statistics, approximately, 60 to 70 million individuals are affected by insulin resistance with 40% of individuals older than 50 years may be at risk of insulin resistance.
Believe it or not, the most common risk factors associated with insulin resistance are obesity and hypertension associated with the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist wrote, " Contrary to expectation, IR was induced in mice fed the Western diet,,,. The Western diet group had higher average glucose levels (187+/-16 versus 159+/-12 mg/dL) and 4.5-fold higher plasma insulin levels".
A total of 48 male albino rats included in the study were divided into 8 groups as follows: control, HFD, stop fat diet (SD), Tomato 200 mg/kg (T200), Tomato 400 mg/kg (T400), Broccoli 200 mg/kg (B200), Broccoli 400 mg/kg (B400), and Chromax (CX).
According to the tested differentiation after 1 month of treatment,
* Serum levels of resistin were significantly reduced in all groups treated with tomato, broccoli, and CXIn other words, T 200, T 400, B 200, B 400 and CX groups reduced levels of resistin to: 4.13 ± 0.22 ng/ml, 1.51 ± 0.04 ng/ml, 4.13 ± 0.22 ng/ml, 2.32 ± 0.15 ng/ml and 1.37 ± 0.03 ng/ml, compared to the baseline, respectively.
Where resistin is an adipocyte hormone associated with regulating glucose metabolism. Elevated levels of resistin have been found to cause insulin resistance in diabetics.
Increased levels of serum levels of leptin significantly reduced anti-elevated levels of resistin in the T 400 group compared to the B 400 and CX groups.
Additionally, serum levels of adiponectin associated with insulin resistance were significantly increased in the T 400 group (131 ± 3.84 pg/ml).
The results strongly suggested that broccoli and tomato extract inhibited the elevated levels of hormone resistin that cause insulin resistance in the high-fat-diet-induced diabetes animal model.
Based on the finding, researchers said, " tomato and broccoli extract treatment regulates glucose homeostasis via reduction of serum resistin and may be a useful non-pharmacological therapy for obesity".
Taken together, broccoli and tomato extract may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Lycopene Exerts a Signifcant Effect Against the Risk of #ColorectalCancer, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Colorectal cancer is a chronic condition that causes cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon and rectum. In other words, colorectal cancer includes colon and rectal cancer.
The colon and rectum form parts of the digestive system with the function of reabsorbing fluids and processing and secreting waste products from the body.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the issue of either the colon or rectum. At the very early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, colorectal cancer may not induce any symptoms.
However, at the advanced stage, the cancerous cells travel may travel a distance away from the colon and rectum to infect other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis.
According to statistics provided by WHO, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer occurring in men and the second most commonly occurring cancer in women. Over 1.8 million new cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in 2018 worldwide.
Out of many prevalent factors associated with the risk of colorectal cancer, some researchers suggested that the rise in the incidence of the disease was linked to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades in the US and economic prosperity in Southeast Asia.
More precisely, the increase in colorectal cancer at an alarming rate is a result of replacing the traditional diet with the Western diet due to economic prosperity.
Dr. Alan Moss, the lead scientist wrote, "Dietary Patterns and Risk of Colorectal Cancer: Analysis by Tumor Location and Molecular Subtypes” by Mehta et al2 helps us to move beyond generalizations about Western diet and CRC risk, to a more detailed understanding of the association between diet and colorectal tumor location and also molecular subtypes".
And, "Processed meats result from salting, smoking, fermenting, or curing the meat, and common examples include ham, bacon, and sausage.5 Furthermore, red meat was declared as probably carcinogenic to humans, and red meat was listed as a group 2A substance.4 Red and processed meats are considered significant components of a “Western” diet".
Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
With an aim to find a plant-based compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), researchers examined the effect of lycopene in the risk of colorectal cancer developing.
The study was conducted by searching the studies published in the PubMed and EMBASE medical databases.
According to 15 included in the meta-analysis,
* The comparison of summary relative risk (RR) for the highest versus lowest category, there was no significant association between lycopene consumption and the risk of colorectal cancer.
* However, lycopene consumption showed a significant effect in reducing the risk of colon cancer.
In other words, lycopene not only is associated with the risk of colorectal cancer but also is a phytochemical that processes anti-colon cancer properties.
Additionally, according to the data on lycopene on HT-29 colorectal cancer cells and on animal models studies, injection of lycopene not only inhibited cell proliferation but also the progression of the CRC by interacting with various cellular signaling pathways, including proteins involved in pro-inflammatory production and cell death programming.
More precisely, lycopene suppresses colorectal cancer cells through its antioxidant activity.
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Lycopene Exhibits Cardio Protective Activity by Inhibiting the Stress Markers, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Cardiovascular disease is a class of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels. In other words, CVD can be a result of anything that impedes the function of the heart and blood vessels.
Cardio-protection is a process to preserve the function and integrity of the cardiac muscle cell.
In other words, cardio-protection is an action that protects heart muscle against damage, including the use of herbal medicine.
Cardiotoxicity induced by toxins reduces the heart-pumping blood capability, leading to a decrease in oxygen-rich blood to nourish the body tissues and organs. The most common causes of cardiotoxicity are associated with patients who received chemotherapy and certain medications.
The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body cells, tissues, and organs with oxygen and nutrients, and remove metabolic wastes.
Plaques building up inside the arteries as a result of high blood cholesterol and other substances such as calcium over time can harden and narrow the arteries, leading to a blood clot. A blood clot that causes damage to the heart muscles has been found to induce heart disease.
CVD is also found in many patients with high blood pressure which contributes to the hardening of the arteries.
Moreover, in the case of a blood clot that reduces blood flow to the brain, it causes a stroke.
Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. Each year, approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke, including 600,000 first attacks, and 185,000 recurrent attacks.
According to the CVD statistics, heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day.
Approximately 60 million Americans are living with heart disease.
The most common risk factor associated with the onset of cardiovascular disease is the increase in age. an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, and smoking.
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in red fruits and vegetables in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity such as tomatoes, red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
To find a potent ingredient for protection of cardio damage, researchers examined lycopene's cardioprotective effects against DFS and tulathromycin.
The study included Swiss albino mice that were divided into seven groups (eight per group) and received saline (control), tulathromycin (a single subcutaneous dose of 28 mg/kg/bw on day 14), DFS (a single oral dose of 100 mg/kg/bw on day 14), tulathromycin plus DFS, or lycopene (oral, 10 mg/kg/bw daily for 15 d) combined with tulathromycin, DFS, or both.
According to the tested analysis, tulathromycin or DFS-treated groups (individually or in combination) displayed significantly elevated (p < 0.05) serum levels of Creatine kinase-myocardial B fraction (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase, and cardiac-specific troponin-T, the cardio-markers associated with significant heart tissue damage.
Furthermore, cardiooxidative stress markers were also elevated in the tulathromycin or DFS-treated groups tissue, including levels of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde.
The levels of antioxidant enzymes in the host treated by tulathromycin or DFS were significantly decreased observed in the cardio tissues, observed by the glutathione content and glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase antioxidant.
Moreover, compared to the control group, the mean pathology scores and the percentages of proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines were also increased substantially in the tulathromycin- and/or DFS-treated groups.
Believe it or not, co-administration of lycopene in the tulathromycin- and/or DFS-treated groups showed a significant amelioration of all parameter changes that caused cardiotissue damage.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "DFS could potentiate the cardiotoxic effects of tulathromycin, whereas lycopene can serve as a cardioprotective agent against DFS and tulathromycin."
Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardio damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Multiple myelomas (Myeloma) is a type of cancer that originates from plasma cells in the bone marrow.
The disease is a condition of DNA alternation of white blood cell normally responsible for the production of antibodies to protect our body against infection with some characteristics.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, multiple myeloma is a relatively uncommon cancer. In the United States, the lifetime risk of getting multiple myeloma is 1 in 132 (0.76%).
Every year, approximately, 32,110 new cases are diagnosed, including 18,130 in men and 13,980 in women. The disease also causes the death of 12,960 Americans including 6,990 in men and 5,970 in women.
The Grades of multiple myeloma are depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.
The exact causes of MS are unknown. Epidemiologically, the increase in age (If you are between 50 and 70 years old you are at higher risk to develop Multiple Myeloma), gender (men are more likely to develop multiple myeloma than women), race (Cancer tends to affect blacks more often than whites), previous multiple myeloma, exposed to certain chemicals, family history, and radiation
The most common symptoms of MS are* Bone pain
Abnormal growth of plasma cells can cause a collapse of the bone.
* Infection
Overcrowding of abnormal plasma cells reduces the functions of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow, leading to a weakened immune system. The most common infections found to be pneumonia and pyelonephritis.
* Anemia
As a result, malignant plasma cells have to interfere with the normal production of red blood cells.
* Bleeding
Due to the lower production of the platelet.
* Renal failure
Abnormal plasma cells can also affect the function of the kidney in getting rid of waste, causing urea and creatinine accumulated in the bloodstream.
* Neurological symptoms
Hypercalcemia is a result of the breakdown of the bone caused of the release of calcium into the bloodstream.
However, most people with some of the above symptoms never developed MS.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In finding a potent compound for the treatment of tumor of the bone marrow, researchers examined the growth inhibitory effects of withanolide D (WND), a steroidal lactone isolated from Withania somnifera on drug-resistant subpopulation known as cancer stem cells (CSCs).
According to tested assays, WND exhibited similar cytostatic effects by inhibiting cancer cell growth and division. on drug-resistant and drug-sensitive cell lines in the nM range.
In cancer cell lines MM-CSCs and RPMI 8226, the administration of WND also induced cancer cell death and apoptosis.
However, WND did not increase the accumulation of the fluorescent P-gp substrate rhodamine 123 in MM-CSCs associated with cancer cell drug resistance. More precisely, the result suggested that WND at the tested doses may not inhibit P-gp accumulation involving in the development of resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic drugs.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " the WND-induced cytostatic effect may be independent of P-gp efflux".
Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of myeloma, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

* Infection
Overcrowding of abnormal plasma cells reduces the functions of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow, leading to a weakened immune system. The most common infections found to be pneumonia and pyelonephritis.
* Anemia
As a result, malignant plasma cells have to interfere with the normal production of red blood cells.
* Bleeding
Due to the lower production of the platelet.
* Renal failure
Abnormal plasma cells can also affect the function of the kidney in getting rid of waste, causing urea and creatinine accumulated in the bloodstream.
* Neurological symptoms

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract. The stomach plays a critical role in aiding the digestive system by secreting acid and enzymes that digest food induced by the stomach muscles that contract periodically, to churn the food and enhance digestion.
Atypical hyperplasia is a precancerous condition characterized by the accumulation of abnormal cells.
Intestinal metaplasia is a pre-gastric cancer condition caused by the change of cells in the stomach.
The exact causes of the condition are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that smoking and infection caused by H. pylori infection, genetic preposition, and environmental factors are some risk factors associated with the onset of intestinal metaplasia.
Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach lining in the beginning. At the advanced stage, the malignant cells can travel a distance away through blood and fluid circulation to infect other healthy tissues and organs.
Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.
Both atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer share the common symptoms of stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron deficiency anemia is found in the majority of patients with atrophic gastritis.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).
Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage has a 5 years survival rate of 67%.
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
To find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gastric diseases, scientists examined the efficacy of Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) decoction on intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH).
XWYP is a traditional Chinese Medicine formula containing Smilax glabrate, Hedyotis diffusae, Taraxacum mongolicum, Caesalpinia sappan, Paeonia alba, Cyperus rotundus, Bletilla striata, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, etc.
According to the results of 138 cases of intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the gastric mucosa of chronic gastritis that was treated by Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) orally 5-7g, for a period from 2-4 months, compared to control, the decoction showed a significant effect rate of IM was 91.3% and that of the AH was 92.16% compared to the control group of 21.3% and 14.46% respectively.
More precisely, XWYP not only had marked therapeutic effects for IM and AH but also showed no toxic effects in the animal experiments revealed no toxic effect,
These results strongly suggested that a safety guarantee was provided for its clinical application.
Taken together, Dandelion in combination with other Chinese medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia (AH), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Ginger Combined with #Kombuchatea Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Risk of #BreastCancer, Studies Find
Kyle J. Norton
Ginger may be the next natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, without inducing any side effects, some scientists said.
Breast cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the breast tissue.
Most cases of primary breast cancer start either in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
At the early stage, some women may experience, a lump (mass) in the breast or in the armpit (lymph nodes), nipple abnormal discharge, inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on the nipple, and persistent tenderness of the breast.
In invasive primary breast cancer at the advanced stage, after penetrating deeper into the breast tissue, the malignant cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs.
Metastatic breast cancer (also called stage IV) is mostly found in the liver, brain, bones, or lungs.
According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women both in the developed and less developed world, causing the worldwide death of over 508,000 women in 2011.
In the US, In 2018, over 260,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with over 63,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
The risk of an American woman being diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime is 12.4%.
Early diagnosis of breast cancer can increase the chance of survival. The 5 years survival rate of women diagnosed with stage 0 and I is 100%.
The exact causes of breast cancer are unknown. However, researchers do know that genetic predisposition, obesity, unhealthy diet, and lifestyle such as smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption are some most prevalent risk factors for breast cancer.
Some researchers also suggested that long-term use of oral contraceptives and psychological stress and anxiety are associated with the increased risk of the disease.
Dr, Kathleen E. Malone, in the concerns of oral contraceptive use in risk of breast cancer, said, " In recent years, a large number of studies have focused on breast cancer risk in women under age 45. Meirik and colleagues (1986) published the first report suggesting a dose-response relationship with the duration of oral contraceptive use among young women: for use of 8 to 11 years, an RR of 1.4 was found; for 12 or more years of use, a 2.2-fold excess risk of breast cancer was found. Paul and colleagues (1986) reported an RR of 4.6 for use of 10 or more years among women aged 25–34. McPherson and coworkers (1987) found an increased RR of 1.8 for use exceeding 11 years among a group of British women through age 45".
These results clearly indicated the risk of breast cancer is increased linearly over the years of the use of oral contraceptives.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
To find a nonexpensive natural ingredient and whole food for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, researchers examine the anti-breast cancer effects of kombucha tea with or without ginger.
Selected BALB/c mice were given 2 types of kombucha tea or ginger combined with kombucha tea before and after the tumor challenge.
Administration of kombucha ginger tea demonstrated a significantly decreased catalase activity in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen and GSH and MDA levels in tumor homogenate compared to kombucha without ginger.
Furthermore, the mice group treated with the combined products significant decrease in SOD activity and an increase in MDA quantity in the tumors.
Dr. Salafzoon S, the lead scientist said, " The consumption of kombucha prepared from ginger could exert minor antioxidant impacts by balancing multi-antioxidant factors in different tissues in the breast cancer models".
Moreover, in the investigation of [10]-gingerol anti-breast cancer activity, using human MDA-MB-231TNBC cells, compared to non-tumor MCF-10A breast cells, researchers suggested [10]-gingerol was able to inhibit cell adhesion, migration, invasion, and apoptosis more effectively in TNBC cells, without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.
Additional analysis also found, [10] that gingerol's anti-breast cancer properties are associated with apoptotic and genotoxic activity, through stimulating the free radicals overexpression in the induction of cancer cells cytotoxicity.
After taking into account co and confounders, the team said, " ...results found here are complementary to previous studies of group and others and demonstrate that additional mechanisms, besides apoptotic cell death, is used by [10]-gingerol to accomplish its antitumor and antimetastatic effects".
Taken together, ginger with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with other primary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer with no side effects.

#Fennel Extract, #EssentialOil and Its Bioactive Compound #Anethole Induce Apoptosis of Cancer Cells, Scientists Find
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a whole food or herb with the potential to activate the protein that programs the death of cancer cells, some studies found.
Cell death is a natural process to warrant the normal development of cells and the cell cycle maturation and maintain the normal function body in the optimized state.
However, some microorganisms are found to process the activity in triggering cell death for their own survival.
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a function of the immune system that evolved as a rapid and irreversible process to efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells, including cells that were damaged by the alternation of DNA or infection
Cancer apoptosis is an action that causes cancer cells to die off with or without affecting the nearby cells.
Some herbal medicine such as fennel was shown to induce the function of overexpression of levels of free radical in initiating a cytotoxic effect that targets cancer cells while protecting the healthy cells through its antioxidant activity.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
Herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
In the study to investigate several herbal plants ethanol extracts from fruits of their apoptotic activity from fruits of seven species of Apiaceae family, namely, Eryngium planum, Archangelica officinalis, Pastinaca sativa, Heracleum sibiricum, Carum carvi, Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), and Levisticum officinale against ML-1—human acute myeloblastic leukemia, J-45.01—human acute T cell leukemia, EOL—human eosinophilic leukaemia, HL-60—human Caucasian promyelocytic leukemia, 1301—human T cell leukemia lymphoblast, C-8166—human T cell leukemia, U-266B1—human myeloma, WICL—human Caucasian normal B cell, and H-9—human T cell, researchers found that
* The ethanol extract from fruit F. Vulgare shows the highest mortality in the Trypan blue test for the J45 cell line with 4% of viable cells and a C8166 cell line with 100% mortality.
* The extract also shows the highest viability in other cell lines, including the HL60 with 60% EOL at 48%, and ML1 at 42%. The normal cell line H9 and WICL showed 35% and 25% of viable cells, respectively.
Furthermore, the reaffirm the use of fennel in traditional cancer treatment, researchers at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU), launched a study to demonstrate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic effect of chloroform fraction of fennel (CFF) in MCF-7 cells.
Application of fennel was shown to inhibit the growth against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-237 in time- and concentration-dependent manners.
Fennel-induced apoptosis of around 49% at the doses of 0.5 mg/ml of CFF and PI-stained cells showed the G1 phase cell cycle arrest, according to the Annexin V/PI assay.
More importantly, the application of fennel also was found to reduce the elevated levels of ROS, disrupted mitochondrial membrane and increased levels of caspase-9 & caspase-3, and DNA fragmentation in the promotion of MCF-7 cell death experiment
Dr. Syed FQ, the lead author in the final assessment of the experiment said, "(The results) revealed the proliferation inhibition, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction effect of CFF, which may help in exploring the novel anti-cancer drug for therapeutic implications".
Moreover, in the study to examine whether anethole, a major bioactive compound found in fennel, anise, and camphor processes anti-metastatic and apoptotic effects on highly-metastatic HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma tumor cells, researchers found that
* Despite weak cytotoxicity against HT-1080 cells, anethole inhibits the adhesion to Matrigel and invasion of HT-1080 cells in a dose-dependent manner.
* Anethole is also able to down-regulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 with anti-apoptotic function and up-regulate the gene expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 with apoptotic function.
Finally, anethole significantly decreased mRNA expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), but not uPA receptor (uPAR) in the facilitated cancer cell death.
Taken all together, fennel alone or its extracts and bioactive compound anethole may be considered adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers
