Scientists may have found food and plant processes the antipyretic activity comparable to those of acetaminophen in patients with fever, some studies suggested.
Fever is a natural reaction caused by the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the immune system to protect our body from damage and injury against foreign pathogens during the acute phase of infection.
According to medical literature, a person is not considered to have a significant fever until the temperature is above 100.4 F (38.0 C).
Although fever is a common syndrome, however, if you or your kid are experiencing fever accompanied by symptoms of a severe headache, unusual skin rash, sensitivity to bright light, persistent stiff neck and pain, mental confusion, particularly persistent vomiting, and difficulty breathing or chest pain, you or your kid should go to the hospital right the way.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The plant and food have been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and antidepression agents and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
In the study to evaluate the antipyretic effect of the aqueous extract of an herbal coded formulation containing an equal amount of Salix alba, Emblica Officinalis, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Adhatoda vasica, Viola odorata, in a yeast-induced pyrexia model in rabbits, researchers found that after recording the results immediately before the administration of the extractor paracetamol and again at 1 hour, application of the extract at 240mg/kg dose significant reduces elevated temperature as compared with that of standard drug paracetamol (150mg/kg).
Fennel extract applied alone showed antipyretic activity against hyperpyrexia in mice, induced by S.C. administration of 2 mL/100 g of a 20% aqueous suspension of brewer's yeast.
As an antipyretic agent, ethanolic extract of F. vulgare fruit showed a moderate antipyretic activity that was statistically significant after 30 and 90 min.
These results showed that herbal coded medicine at a dose of 240mg/kg and fennel extract have marked an antipyretic activity in animal models and this was strongly supported by the ethnopharmacological uses of medicinal plants.
Furthermore, in the examine the hepatotoxicity induced by acetaminophen caused by the excessive production of N-acetyl-para-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI) in the induction of symptoms such as fever due to inflammation, researchers showed that the application of trans anethole, an aromatic compounds isolated from fennel exerted a significant effect in the inhibited pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin (PGE2), cytokines (TNF, IL-1) and nitric oxide (NO)thus decreasing the risk of fever caused by an overreaction of the immune system.
Application of AN at doses of 125 and 250mg/kg once a day for seven days prevented the changes caused by the APAP overdose.
Additionally, researchers also discovered, that AN infection prevents the overexpression of proinflammatory mediators such as NO, TNF, IL-1α, MIP-1α, and MCP-1 and induced the up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10), thus reducing the onset of fever.
Taken together, there is no doubt that fennel may be considered a functional food for the treatment of inflammatory induced fever.

#Alliin Found in Garlic Powder Inhibits N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) -Induced DNA Alteration Associated with the Onset of #LiverCancer, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest detoxed internal organ with a function to filter out blood coming from the intestines before passing it to other parts of the body,
cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of liver cell DNA.
Additionally, the liver also produces cholesterol to aid digestion, the production of steroid hormones, vitamin D, and the building of strong cell membranes.
Liver pared to normal liver cell growth which is stopped after a certain stage of division, liver cancer cells can grow indefinitely to form a tumor, leading to reduced function of the liver.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, about 42,030 new cases (29,480 in men and 12,550 in women) will be diagnosed.
Primary liver cancer and intrahepatic bile duct cancer also caused the death of 31,780 people (21,600 men and 10,180 women) in 2019.
In the Western world, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), a spectrum of hepatic disorders induced by obesity and metabolic syndrome, is a recognized risk factor for liver cancer.
Dr. György Baffy at the Harvard Medical School wrote, "Hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is the fifth most prevalent cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a spectrum of hepatic disorders associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, is a recognized risk factor for HCC".
And, "NAFLD that is advanced to cirrhosis carries the highest risk for HCC, but there is an increasing concern that NAFLD-associated HCC may also occur in the non-cirrhotic liver".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the bioactive compound alliin isolated from garlic in an animal model, against liver cell DNA damage.
The study included rats induced with liver cancer by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) treated by administration of garlic powders for 2 weeks (5% of the diet).
According to the liver comet assay, injection of different garlic powders demonstrated a significant liver protective effect by a 35-60% reduction in DNA damage induced by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in rat liver.
Additional injection of alliin content of the garlic powder showed a strongly proportional decrease in NDMA-induced DNA alteration.
Three garlic powders with or without alliin also protected the liver cell against DNA damage induced by aflatoxin B1 in the liver.
However, these decreases were not correlated to the allicin content of the garlic powders.
In other words, additional alliin increased the garlic powder function in the inhibition of liver cancer initiation caused by NDMA while alliin found in the garlic must work with other compounds synergically to induce the same effects.
Taken together, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Diet Rich in High Glucoraphanin (HG) #Broccoli Processes Anti-High Blood Cholesterol Activity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing it to other parts of the body. The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
In other words, the condition is caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amounts source plays a critical to aiding digestive function in absorbing nutrients, building strong cell membranes, and producing steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.
Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hypercholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.
The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.
The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.
Sadly, only 50% of people with hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.
Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity due to aging may have a strong impact on the increased incidence in the US.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
In finding a potential plant that processes anti-high blood cholesterol, researchers examined a diet rich in high glucoraphanin (HG) broccoli that reduces plasma LDL-C.
130 volunteers recruited to two independent double-blind, randomly allocated parallel dietary intervention studies, were assigned to consume either 400 g standard broccoli or 400 g HG broccoli per week for 12 weeks.
According to the plasma lipids before and after the intervention,
* In one study, The HG broccoli diet reduced plasma LDL-C by 7.1% (95% CI: –1.8%, –12.3%, p = 0.011), whereas standard broccoli reduced LDL-C by 1.8% (95% CI +3.9%, –7.5%, ns). In study 2 (93 volunteers)
* In another study, the HG broccoli diet resulted in a reduction of 5.1% (95% CI: –2.1%, –8.1%, p = 0.001), whereas standard broccoli reduced LDL-C by 2.5% (95% CI: +0.8%, –5.7%, ns).
* When data from the two studies were combined the reduction in LDL-C by the HG broccoli was significantly greater than standard broccoli (p = 0.031).
Collectively, researchers said, "Evidence from two independent human studies indicates that consumption of high glucoraphanin broccoli significantly reduces plasma LDL-C".
Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric's #Curcumin Exerts a Protective Effect on Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Function through Its Anti Pathogenic Activity, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Intestinal mucosa processes a single cell layer of epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of the intestine in nutrient adsorption.
Biologically, the intestinal protection of the intestinal mucosal barrier function is associated with
*Bile and gastric acid produced in the liver and stomach that only aid digestion but kills microorganism
* Defensins secretory epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestines against bacteria, fungi, and many enveloped and nonenveloped viruses.
* Lysozyme is an enzyme that protects the intestine by causing the destruction of the cell walls of certain bacteria.
* Regenerating islet-derived protein 3 gammas (Reg3γ), an antibacterial lectin is a type of antimicrobial peptide found in the gut epithelial Paneth cells with a function to prevent microorganisms from coming into contact with the epithelial layer.
In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier plays an essential role in the separation of the inside of the body from the outside environment, particularly in harmful microorganisms.
Dr. Oshima T the lead scientist in the examination of light junctions (TJs), the most important component for the construction of a constitutive barrier of epithelial cells that regulates the permeability of the barrier by tightly sealing the cell-cell junctions, wrote, "Gastrointestinal diseases including reflux esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and cancers may be regulated by these molecules, and disruption of their functions leads to chronic inflammatory conditions and chronic or progressive disease".
And, "regulation of the barrier function of epithelial cells by regulating the expression and localization of TJ proteins is a potential new target for the treatment of these diseases".
More precisely, by improving the intestinal mucosal barrier function, diseases associated with the gastrointestinal tract may be preventable.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the protection of the intestinal mucosal barrier, researchers examined the effects of curcumin's extensive pharmacological effects, on gastrointestinal diseases.
According to the analysis, curcumin exerted protective effects on the intestinal mucosal barrier through multiple pathways.
More precisely, curcumin protects the tissues of the intestinal mucosal barrier by
* By reducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines in orchestrating cell damage.
* By inhibiting the oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals in facilitating the onset of chronic inflammation in the initiation of intestinal mucosal damage.
* By reducing levels of bacteria in the induction of infection that may weaken the function of the intestinal mucosal barrier.
Moreover, curcumin also protects the cells of intestinal mucosa against apoptosis.
In additional differentiation of the tested assays, researchers also found that curcumin also balances the ratio of gut microbiota associated with the regulation of intestinal microecology and intestinal immune response which plays a critical role in enhancing the intestinal mucosal barrier function.
Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the improvement of intestinal mucosal barrier function, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Dietary #Lycopene Reduces The Risk of #CardiovascularDisease Particularly in #CoronaryHeartDisease (CHD), Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases associated with blood vessels and heart muscle. Depending on the location of heart muscle damage or the blood vessel blockage, CVD can be a coronary artery disease caused by the hardening of the arteries that interfere with the blood flow to the heart.
Heart failure, a major health problem associated with the reduced function of the heart, is a leading cause of hospitalization in people older than age 65. Believe it or not, more than 6.5 million Americans are living with the condition of heart failure.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, heart disease causes the death of 610,000 people in the US. More precisely, 1 in every 4 deaths in the US every year are caused by heart disease.
Furthermore, every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack including the first attack of 525,000 patients.
The exact causes of cardiovascular disease are not clear. However, epidemiologically family history, age ethnicity, gender, and medical conditions such as cholesterol high blood pressure, and diabetes have been found in most patients with CVD.
Some researchers who examined the correlation between a high-fat diet and cardiovascular disease in obese patients suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may be one major culprit that causes the onset of CVD.
Dr. Jane E. Freedman wrote, " According to the National Center for Health Statistics (1999), 61% of adults in the U.S. are overweight (body mass index [BMI] 25 to 29.9 kg/m2), and 26% are obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2). Elevated BMI, particularly caused by abdominal or upper-body obesity, has been associated with diseases and metabolic abnormalities including hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and coronary heart disease.".
And, " clearly established diseases associated with high-fat or high-calorie diets can be offset by the use of nutritional supplements. Although these findings beckon us to draw broader implications, even if proven true in larger studies, it is doubtful that this will lead to a recommendation of high-calorie, high-fat diets".
Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
In finding a natural compound for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the effect of lycopene by a meta-analysis.
According to the 14 studies identified by the search in the medical literature of the database of Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to October 2016,* Lycopene exerted a significant inverse association with a pooled risk ratio (RR) of 0.83 in the risk of CVD.
* Furthermore, dietary lycopene intake was statistically significant in the reduction of risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) with an RR of 0.87 and stroke with an RR of 0.83.
* Lycopene biomarker concentrations were also inversely associated with the risk of CVD.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Higher lycopene exposure is inversely associated with a lower risk of CVD".
Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of CVD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Tomato Chemical Compounds Inhibits #LiverCancer Compared to Those of #Doxorubicin and #Camptothecin, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cells growing disorderly and uncontrollably in our bodies.
Liver cancer is a chronic medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the liver tissues.
The liver is the largest internal organ that only filters out blood from the intestine before passing it to other parts of the body, but also produces bile to aid digestion, build strong cell walls, and vitamin D and steroid hormones.
The liver joined with the kidney and skin is considered 3 detoxed organs in the human.
Most common liver cancers are* Hepatocellular carcinoma, which is the most common liver cancer accounting, accounting for 75 percent of all cases caused by the DNA alternation of hepatocytes, predominant liver cells.
Epidemiologically, primarily hepatocellular carcinoma has been found to metastasize to the pancreas, intestines, and stomach.
* Cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer, is caused by abnormal cell growth in the small, tube-like bile ducts in the liver, accounting for 10 to 20% of all liver cancer cases.
Out of many prevalent factors that cause the onset of liver cancer, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong impact on increasing the risk of liver cancer.
Dr. Qiu-Ye Lan, the lead scientist wrote, "Healthy dietary patterns may prevent many chronic diseases and is emphasized by 2015 US dietary guideline, but it remains unclear which dietary patterns may be a benefit to prevention of primary liver cancer (PLC)"
And, "Our findings suggest that the UPDP (an urban prudent dietary pattern (UPDP)) and TCDP (traditional Cantonese dietary pattern (TCDP) )were associated with lower, whereas the MPFP with the higher, risk of PLC".
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In the urgency to discover healthy foods for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the effect of tomato antiproliferative activities against human colon (HT29) and liver (HepG2) cancer cells.
Application of the tetrasaccharide tomato glycoalkaloid alpha-tomatine, the trisaccharide beta(1)-tomatine, the disaccharide gamma-tomatine, the monosaccharide delta-tomatine, and their common aglycon tomatidine showed better inhibition of liver cancer cell compared to the tested colon cell line.
Additionally, alpha-tomatine isolated from tomato at a concentration of 1 microg/mL demonstrated a greater effect against liver carcinoma cells compared to those of anticancer drugs doxorubicin and camptothecin
Furthermore, alpha-tomatine also inhibited normal human liver HeLa (Chang) cells without inducing any side effects.
Also in vitro, according to the tested assays,
* Alpha-tomatine isolated from green tomatoes induced liver cancer cell death compared to little inhibition of the cells by the three low-tomatine red tomato extracts.
* Alpha-tomatine from tomato also was highly effective in inhibiting all of the liver cell lines, compared to little cell inhibition of ehydrotomatine, tomatidenol, and tomatidine.
Collectively, the results not only showed the susceptibility to destruction varies with the nature of the alkaloid and plant extract but also how phytochemicals in plants worked synergistically in cancer inhibition.
Dr. Friedman M, the lead scientist said, "These findings extend related observations on the anticarcinogenic potential of glycoalkaloids and suggest that consumers may benefit by eating not only high-lycopene red tomatoes but also green tomatoes containing glycoalkaloids".
Taken together, tomato processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

#Chinese Kidney Decoction Improves Symptoms of #Asthma and Prevent #Emphysema, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Respiratory disease is a medical condition that affects the breathing organs and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, nerves, and muscle breathing,...
The most common symptom of respiratory disease is shortness of breath.
The lungs formed part of the respiratory symptoms, are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax). The organ plays a critical role in inhaling oxygen to the body and exhaling carbon dioxide from the body.
Asthma is a medical and chronic condition characterized by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs.
The most common symptoms of asthma are episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.
Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.
Asthma not only interferes with daily activities and also can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episodes and severity of the attacks.
According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.
Believe it or not, African Americans in the U.S. die from asthma at a higher rate than people of other races or ethnicities.
Dr. Laurent Guilleminault, in the environmental effect in the risk asthma, said, "The rates of asthma and allergy (Type 1 hypersensitivity disorders) have been increasing worldwide for the last few decades. Various theories have been proposed to account for this alarming trend. One of these is the impact of environmental toxicants".
And, "repletion of glutathione levels (with oral supplementation of N-acetylcysteine), and enhancement of glutathione transferase function (using sulforaphane) might be therapeutic options for countering type 1 hypersensitivity disorders caused by environmental chemicals".
In other words, environmental toxins cause reduced levels of antioxidants in the body and are associated with the risk of asthma onset
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of respiratory disease, researchers examined the effect of invigorating Kidney (Viscum coloratum 15g, Psoralea corylifolia 15g, Eucommia ulmoides 15g, Lycium chinense 9g, Tussilago farfara 15g, Artemisia capillaris 9g, and Pogostemon cablin 9g as daily dosage) on asthma by measuring maximal expiratory flow-volume curve (MEFV) in the convalescent stage.
In a total of 66 cases of asthmatics were examined, researchers found that before treatment by the invigorating Kidney decoction, the results of FEV, PEF, V75, V50, and V25 in 35 cases or 53.03% of the total demonstrated a significantly negative effect compared with healthy persons.
In other words, in the convalescent stage, convalescent stage, over half of the asthmatics showed obstruction of airways and chiefly of small airways.
According to the tested analysis, after-treatment of the decoction only exerted effects on different parameters associated with the improvement of MEFV to some extent but also reversed the airway obstruction of asthmatics in the convalescent stage.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "the authors indicated that the prompt treatment for asthmatics in the convalescent stage was conducive early to prevent emphysema and confirmed that the treatment with Chinese herbs of chiefly invigorating Kidney deserved to be propagated.".
Taken together, coltsfoot used alone and combined with other herbal medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of asthmatics in the convalescent stage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
