#Turmeric #Curcuminoid Fractions Process Anti Hypercholesterolemic Activity, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary plays a critical role to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients and fluids, building strong cell membranes, and producing steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to hypercholesterolemia, a leading cause of heart disease, and stroke.
Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

The condition is a result caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

People with hypercholesterolemia at the early stage are asymptomatic. However, patients with familial hypercholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US.

In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol. and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong impact on the increased incidence of hypercholesterolemia in the US.

Dr. ROBERT B. KELLY, the lead scientist wrote, "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin on hypercholesterolemia, one of the most important risk factors for atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular diseases.

The experimental study included selected 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats that were divided into six groups, namely normal group diet, high-cholesterol diet (HCD) 2%, HCD + 100 mg/kg b.w. curcuminoid fraction, HCD + 300 mg/kg b.w. curcuminoid fraction, HCD + cider 1% v/v, and HCD + curcuminoid cider 2% v/v for 4 weeks.

According to the tested analysis of total cholesterol levels measured on days 1, 14, and 28, curcuminoid cider at 2% v/v significantly lowered total cholesterol levels compared to the positive control.

Furthermore, curcuminoid fractions at 100 and 300 mg/kg) and curcuminoid cider (1 and 2% v/v) inhibited the gene expression of CD44 associated with membrane cholesterol and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 involved in the measurement of lipid metabolic impairment.

Moreover, curcuminoid fractions at 100 and 300 mg/kg) and curcuminoid cider (1 and 2% v/v) also lower the levels of iNOS, which has been found to mediate HCD-induced liver fibrosis.

Additionally, the applications also inhibited LOX-1 associated with high circulating cholesterol levels.

In other words, curcuminoid fractions at 100 and 300 mg/kg) and curcuminoid cider (1 and 2% v/v) displayed their hypocholesterolemic effects via attenuating genes related to oxidative stress in vivo.

Taken altogether, turmeric-processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#HealthyFood #Onion Used Alone or Combined with #Garlic Processes Anti Hypertensive Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. High blood pressure is a condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries.
High blood pressure is also a condition of a cluster of metabolic syndrome involved in the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

If the blood pressure stays high over time, it not can damage the heart muscle but also the body in many ways.

According to the statistic from the CDC, 1 of 3 U.S. adults or about 75 million people is living with high blood pressure. Unfortunately, only about half (54%) of these people have their high blood pressure under control.

There is no single cause of high blood pressure,
* Most unpreventable risk factors are family history, age, gender, ethnicity, and chronic kidney disease.

* Most preventable high blood pressure risk factors are physical inactivity, overweight or obese, unhealthy diet, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking.

However, most people with some of the risk factors have never developed hypertension

Some researchers suggested that the rise of obesity associated with the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades may be the major influence on the onset of high blood pressure.

Dr. Wilde DW, the lead scientist said, "Dietary fat contributes to the elevation of blood pressure and increases the risk of stroke and coronary artery disease".

And, "an elevation of plasma FAs may contribute to the development of hypertension via a process involving the elevation of Ca(2+) current density and alteration of channel kinetics in the vascular smooth muscle membrane".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

In finding a potent ingredient for the prevention of hypertension, researchers evaluated the effect of aqueous extract of garlic, white onion, and purple onion on subjects with blood pressure.

Elevated levels of an angiotensin-converting enzyme associated with the high blood pressure were inhibited by the aqueous extract of garlic, purple onion, and white onion in a concentration-dependent manner (0-4 mg/ml).

Additional differentiation also suggested that purple onion (IC50 = 0.59 mg/ml) had higher inhibitory effect on angiotensin-converting enzyme comapred to those of white onion (IC50 = 0.66 mg/ml) and purple onion (IC50 = 0.96 mg/ml).

Furthermore, all aqueous extracts showed a significant activity to scavenge 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH*) free radical and reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "a possible mechanism by which garlic, white onion, and purple onion exert... antihypertensive properties could be through the inhibitory effect on ACE,.. coupled with their ability to prevent lipid peroxidation in the pancreas and heart, which justify their strong antioxidant properties".

Taken together, onion used alone or combined with garlic may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Betanin Exerts a Cytotoxic Effect Against the DNA Alternated Cells that Causes #Cancers and #InflammatoryDiseases

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a class of chronic conditions associated with the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, including
* Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammation and ulcers found in the innermost lining of the colon and rectum.

* Crohn's disease. is a type of IBD that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, other than the colon and rectum.

The most common symptoms of IBD are severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. Long-term persistent symptoms such as weight loss may be life-threatening.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The causes of IBD are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades that caused the alternation of the ratio of gut microbiota may be the major culprit in facilitating the onset of IBD.

The research of Case Western Reserve University, wrote, "A high-fat diet may lead to specific changes in gut bacteria that could fight harmful inflammation -- a major discovery for patients suffering from Crohn's disease, research indicates. Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel syndrome, causes debilitating intestinal swelling, cramping, and diarrhea".

Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), researchers examined the effect of beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra) products and their major component betanin on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and DNA damage in vitro.

In neutrophils isolated from the blood of patients with inflammatory bowel disease--ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), injection of betanin at 100 μM for 24 h increased DNA damage, according to the comet assay.

However, in Caco-2 cells. injection of betanin at 100 μM for 24 h showed a lesser pronounced stimulation of DNA damage.

Treatment of Caco-2 cells with H2O2 caused a 4-fold increase of DNA strand breaks in comparison to untreated cells, but pre-treatment with betanin reduced DNA damage in these cells.

In other words, betanin exerted a cytotoxic effect against the DNA alternated cells but inhibited the free radical expression in the induction of DNA damage in normal cells.

More precisely, betanin led to the release of ROS and apoptotic cell death.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " betanin may exert anti-inflammatory and potentially cancer-preventive activity".

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Pintobeans Inhibit Markers and Gene Associated with the Levels of #Cholesterol, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol is a waxy substance carried around by lipoproteins, that do not mix with water-based blood in our body.

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help to digest fat, particularly in the building of strong cell membranes. However, too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

There are 2 types of cholesterol. The low-density lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol which performs the aforementioned activity in the right levels and the high-density lipoprotein which returns cholesterol back to the liver for reuse.

However, overexpression of cholesterol can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to arterial narrowing, wall stiffness, and hardening, some major causes of heart disease and stroke.

Although high blood cholesterol does not induce any symptoms, a prolonged period of uncontrolled high blood cholesterol can cause complications of chest pain, the early signs of coronary artery disease, heart attack,.... and stroke.

According to medical guidelines, the normal goal of non-HDL cholesterol levels should be 30 mg/dL higher than the LDL cholesterol level.

For example, if your non-HDL cholesterol level is LDL cholesterol 30 mg/dL = 130 mg/dL and your HDL is 40 mg/dL = Non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio of 3.25, the ideal range of the ratio.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (LDL)/1 (HDL). If you have a number that is lower than 4, you have healthy blood cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia is one member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome, therefore, if you have a number that is higher than 4, your risk of cardiovascular is increased compared to people with healthy levels.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterol, scientists examined the changes in cholesterol metabolism in response to whole pinto beans (wPB) and their hulls (hPB) supplemented into a diet rich in saturated fat in hamsters.

The pinto bean is also known as the common bean, genus Phaseolus, and the family Fabaceae. It has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish-beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.

The study included forty-four 9-wk-old male Golden Syrian hamsters that were randomly assigned to 4 diet groups (n = 11), including a 5% (wt:wt) fat diet [normal-fat diet (NF)], a 15% (wt:wt) fat diet [diet rich in saturated fat (HSF), saturated fatty acids accounted for 70% of total fatty acids], or HSF supplemented with 5% (wt:wt) wPB or 0.5% (wt:wt) hPB for 4 wk.

According to the plasma, liver, intestinal, and fecal samples that were collected to evaluate multiple cholesterol markers and gene targets,
* The plasma non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) concentration was significantly reduced in the wPB- and hPB-supplemented groups by 31.9 ± 3.5% and 53.6 ± 3.2%, respectively, compared to the HSF group (P < 0.01), to concentrations comparable with the NF group

* The wPB-supplemented hamsters had significantly lower liver cholesterol (45.1%, P < 0.001) and higher fecal cholesterol concentrations (94.8%, P = 0.001) than those of the HSF group.

* The expressions of hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (Hmgcr) and small intestinal acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase 2 (Acat2) associated with the elevation of blood cholesterol were significantly decreased in animals administered wPB (by 89.1% and 63.8%, respectively) and hPB (by 72.9% and 47.7%, respectively) compared to the HSF-fed counterparts (P < 0.05).

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Pinto beans remediated high cholesterol induced by HSF in male hamsters by decreasing hepatic cholesterol synthesis and intestinal cholesterol absorption, effects which were partially exerted by the hulls".

Taken altogether, Pinto beans may be considered s functional for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Promotes #DigestiveFunction by Improving the Ratio of Gut Microbiota, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Gut microbiota is a complex community with over a trillion microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts.
According to the ESMN, the microbiota can weigh up to 2 kg, including 1/3 of gut microbiota found in most people, compared to 2/3 that are specific to individuals depending on geography, environment, and lifestyle.

In healthy individuals, the ratio of good and bad microorganisms is balanced. In other words, healthy gut microbiota levels maintain the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract.

A balanced ratio of gut microbiota plays a critical role in the digestion of certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, in the production of vitamins, improvement of digestive functioning, and modulation of the immune function.

The use of antibiotics has been found to damage the gut ecosystem, leading to certain chronic illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.

Unhealthy gut microbiota has been found to
* Decrease the interaction with the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.

* Increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* Reduce nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obesity complications.

* Increase the risk of controlling brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that can lead to bad neurobehaviors.

Further, the unbalanced ratio of gut microbiota functions also alters immune homeostasis, leading to the onset of autoimmune disorders which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases.

Compared to probiotics, prebiotics is compound in food that induces the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.

In other definition, it is a special form of dietary fiber that acts as a fertilizer that promotes the growth of good bacteria in your gut.

In the gastrointestinal tract, prebiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome.

In other words, prebiotics raise the levels of healthy bacteria against bad bacteria.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the promotion of digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of cranberries' impact on gut microbiota.

The randomized, double-blind, cross-over, controlled design trial included a total of 11 healthy adults consumed for 5 days each a control diet (animal-based diet (meats, dairy products, and simple sugars) plus 30 g/day placebo powder) and a cranberry diet (animal-based diet plus 30 g/day freeze-dried whole cranberry powder).

According to the tested analysis of the stool, urine, and blood samples, compared to the pre-control diet, the control diet modified 46 taxonomic clades in the gut, including an increase in the abundance of Firmicutes and a decrease in Bacteroidetes and increased bacteria-derived deoxycholic acid and decreased acetate and butyrate in stool

In other words, the control diet induces a significant change in gut microbiotas by favoring the "bad" organisms.

Compared to the post-control diet, the cranberry diet modified 9 taxonomic clades, including a decrease in the abundance of Firmicutes and an increase in Bacteroidetes in the flavor of the good organisms in the gut.

Furthermore, cranberry promoted the balancing ratio of gut microbiotas by attenuating control diet-induced increase in secondary bile acids decreasing the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and increasing urinary anthocyanins and bacterially derived phenolic acids.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "an animal-based diet altered the microbiota composition to a less favorable profile, increased carcinogenic bile acids, and decreased beneficial SCFA. Cranberries attenuated the impact of the animal-based diet on microbiota composition, bile acids, and SCFA, evidencing their capacity to modulate the gut microbiota".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the promotion of gut health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

δ-#Tocopherol Supplemented Diet Inhibits the Risk and Onset of #ProstateCancer by Reduced Proliferation and Increased Apoptosis

Kyle J. Norton

The prostate gland wrapped around around a tube (the urethra), is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder. The prostate gland is a gland that makes and stores semen. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the tube that carries urine out of your body.

Additionally, the muscles of the prostate gland also play a critical role in propelling seminal fluid into the urethra during ejaculation

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate are associated with a natural impact on the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Unfortunately, aging is not the only cause of an enlarged prostate.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the growth of cells irregularly in the tissue of the prostate.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate gland.
According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among Canadian men and the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in men in Canada.

In 2017, approximately 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, accounting for 21% of all new cancer cases in men.

Furthermore, approximately 1 in 7 Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime and 1 in 29 will die from it.

The 5-year survival rate for most men with local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

In other words, For men diagnosed with prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 100%.

However, the 5 years survival rate of prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, is only 30%.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetables, and seed or nut oils, etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of tocopherols on prostate cancer.

The study included specific Pten-/- (Ptenp-/-) mice induced cancer by activation of AKT cancer promotion signaling, fed by Ptenp-/- mice with AIN93M or 0.2% δ-T supplemented diet, at the age of 6 or 12 weeks. According to the analysis,
* δ-T treatment reduced prostate adenocarcinoma multiplicity at the age of 40 weeks by 53.3 and 42.7%, respectively.

* Furthermore, the phosphorylation of AKT (T308) that promotes cancer growth and survival was reduced in the prostate of the mice administered the δ-T diet.

* δ-T diet also, reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis in the prostate cancer cell line without affecting the oxidative stress.

Interestingly, α-tocopherol (α-T) at 0.2% in the diet exhibited anti-prostate cancer cell activity with no effects on prostate adenocarcinoma multiplicity in the Ptenp-/- mice.

After taking other factors into account, researchers said, " δ-T inhibits the development of prostate adenocarcinoma in Ptenp-/- mice, mainly through inhibition of AKT activation".

Taken together, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Fennel Biochemical Compounds Process A Strong Antioxidant Activity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Imbalancing the ratio of the free radicals and antioxidants in the facilitation of oxidative stress was associated with the increased risk of the early onset of many chronic diseases, scientists found.

Fennel is a species of Foeniculum Vulgare, belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), and native to the shores of the Mediterranean, may process a potential effect in improving the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the human body, therefore, adding a portion of fennel on your daily diet should be helpful in reducing the risk of diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke ...

Dr. Moylan JS, the lead author in the study "Oxidative stress, chronic disease, and muscle wasting", wrote, "If an overproduction of oxidants overwhelms the antioxidant defenses, oxidative damage of cells, tissues, and organs ensue. In some cases, oxidative stress is assigned a causal role in disease pathogenesis, whereas in others the link is less certain".

Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons produced daily in our body, reactive oxygen species, and reactive nitrogen can induce a domino's effect by stealing an electron from other molecules, leading to a continued function that cannot stop until they are paired or inhibited by the presence of antioxidant molecules.

If the generation of free radicals exceeds the protective effects of antioxidants and some co-factors, the process can cause oxidative damage accumulated during the life cycle, leading to the disruption in the function of the cells.

There are many risk factors that can increase the overexpression of free radicals, including fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and air pollutants.

Therefore by changing your diet pattern with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less red meat and processed foods and maintaining an active lifestyle, you can absolutely balance the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in your body, thus decreasing the risk of many related chronic diseases.

In the review of the traditional use of fennel essential oils (EO) possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammable oil and insect repellent, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties, researchers launched a comparison of essential oils and their main constituents in Citrus aurantium, C. limon, Cupressus sempervirens, Eucalyptus globulus, Foeniculum vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris.

EO of fennel showed the best free radicals scavenging capacity compared to others.

Fennel EO also was most effective against lipid peroxidation along with EO of C. limon.

Interestingly, after in-depth analysis, researchers discovered the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the EOs were plant-species-dependent and not always attributable to the EO's main components.

Additionally, in the evaluation of chemical constituents from essential oil from (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum, Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce, and Foeniculum vulgare var. Vulgare, researchers suggested
* trans-Anethole, estragole, fenchone and limonene found highly abundant in all of the examined oils demonstrated strong antioxidant activities in the DPPH radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation, and metal chelating assays
* All 3 tested essentials display significant antimicrobial activities against two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative, and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.

Finally, in the study to assess the efficacy of medicinal plants used traditionally in folk medicine as natural healing remedies with therapeutic effects such as prevention of cardiovascular diseases, inflammation disorders, or reducing the risk of cancer, researchers found that fennel in comparison to other medical exerts a strong antioxidant effect through many of its bioactive compound such as phenolic compounds.

However, Dr. Škrovánková S, the lead scientist in the concerns of some conditions that may affect the herbal quality, said, "The antioxidant properties of medicinal plants depend on the plant, its variety, environmental conditions, climatic and seasonal variations, geographical regions of growth, degree of ripeness, growing practices, and many other factors such as postharvest treatment and processing.

Taken together, adding a portion of fennel into your diet may have a potential effect in increasing the levels of antioxidants in your body and countering the risk of overexpression of free radicals.
