#Healthyfood #Cranberry #Proanthocyanidin (cPAC) Processes Anti Microbial and Antibiotic Resistance Activity, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Antibiotics are a group of conventional medicines used for the treatment of bacterial, fungal parasitic,... infections.
The medications have no effects on viral infection.

Infection is a disease caused by microorganism invasion.

After entering the body, the organisms selectively find a specific tissue or organ to start their multiplication.

Most infectious diseases can be passed from infected person to person or transmitted by bites from insects or animals.

However, acquired infectious diseases can also be caused by ingesting contaminated food or water or being exposed to organisms in the environment.

Most organisms before having a chance to induce infection are killed off by the immune system response in the acute phase of infection, by stimulating the production of a proinflammatory cytokine.

Unfortunately, if the immune system fails to destroy the invasive organism within a set period of time, normally in a few weeks, it will adapt to the change, causing chronic infection.

Antibiotics have been found to cause digestive discomforts such as nausea, and indigestion. vomiting, diarrhea, and bloating. the feeling of fullness, loss of appetite, and stomach cramping or pain, acutely.

Chronic use of antibiotics also induces more serious adverse effects, including skin rash, skin allergic reactions, upset stomach, and fungal (yeast) vaginal infections or oral thrush by weakening the immune system.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers investigated the antibacterial activity of cranberry proanthocyanidin (cPAC) on resistance to tetracycline in Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

According to the tested assays, cPAC exerted a potentiating effect, both in vitro and in vivo, on a broad range of antibiotic classes against pathogenic E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and P. aeruginosa.

cPAC demonstrated the antibacterial effect through two antibiotic resistance mechanisms, namely, selective membrane permeability, and multidrug efflux pumps.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " The use of cPAC to potentiate antibiotics and mitigate the development of resistance could improve treatment outcomes and help combat the growing threat of antibiotic resistance".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered an adjunct therapy as an antibiotic against bacterial pathogens, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#TomatoPowder TP Decreasea the Rate of Aberrant Crypt Foci Associated with Early Onset of #ColorectalCancer, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the colon or rectum.

Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum, before penetrating into the deeper layer to induce localized tumors.

At the very early stage of colorectal cancer, most patients are asymptomatic due to the very size of the tumor which does not affect the function of the colon or rectum. However, at the advanced stage, the oversize tumor can press on the nearby blood vessels and nerves and affect the organ's functioning, leading to severe pain and bleeding and specific symptoms accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

At this stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. Proximately, in 2019, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 rectal cancer will be diagnosed.

The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The 5-year survival rate of people with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. However, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of colorectal cancer, some researchers suggested that the widespread of colorectal cancer in South Korea may be correlated with the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades, particularly in men.

Dr. Kim, Jeehyun, wrote, "In men, total fat intake was not associated with risk of colorectal adenoma. However, the risk of colorectal adenoma increases with higher saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake. The adjusted odds ratio in the highest quintile was 1.71 (95% confidence interval, 1.01–2.91) compared with that in the lowest quintile".

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers investigated the effects of tomato powder (TP) on the development of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colorectal cancer in Wistar rats.

According to the tested assays, TP added to feed at a 5% rate decreased the rate of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) associated with the early stage of colon cancer development and reduced the development of adenocarcinoma and growth of AOM-induced colorectal cancer in rats.

TP supplementation also demonstrated chemopreventive activities against the protein involved in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines in the colon tissues and promoted cancer cell apoptosis.

Based on the findings, Dr. Tuzcu M, the lead scientist wrote, "Our findings identify an intimate connection between dietary supplementation of TP and the decreased risk of colorectal cancer in rats".

And "suggest that consumption of TP would be a natural candidate for the prevention of colorectal cancer in men".

Furthermore, according to the joint study led by the University of Almería, tomatoes showed significant time- and concentration-dependent inhibitory/cytotoxic effects on HT-29 cells.

Moreover, adding tomato carotenoids and olive oil to HT-29 cells in cultures demonstrated a better inhibitory effect compared to the application of individual compounds in CCD-18 normal cells.

In variety comparison, the Racimo tomato displayed the most anti-cancer activity against colorectal cancer cell proliferation compared to others, without affecting the normal CCD-18 cells.

In chemical analysis, olive oil and tomato carotenoids inhibited the HT-29 cancer cell proliferation synergistically compared to no effect of other phenolic compounds.

Taken together, tomatoes alone or combined with olive oil may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Beta-Sitosterol BSS Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of #Hypertension, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the arterial walls. In high blood pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the circulation system. Over time, high blood pressure has been found to cause damage to the heart and arteries.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition characterized by persistently or abnormally high blood pressure that leads to rising pressure in your heart.

It also is a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

High blood pressure is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

If the pressure stays high over time it can cause hardening and stiffening of the arterial wall,, a major risk factor of heart diseases.

The ideal blood pressure is more than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90), according to the consensus.

In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have high blood pressure, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults aged 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

High blood pressure can be acute or chronic. Acute high blood pressure most often occurs in people with sudden stress or intense physical exercise. As the heart must pump harder to provide the needs of nutrients and oxygen.

Most cases of chronic high blood pressure are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and chronic diseases such as kidney disease, leading to the onset of strokes and cardiovascular disease.

If you can control your diet, such as making changes to your lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and dieting with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers compared the effects of β-sitosterol (BSS) and lisinopril, antihypertension in rats.

According to the tested analysis of rat groups induced hypertension by cadmium chloride treated by BSS and lisinopril, * BSS showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the serum creatinine concentration, compared to hypertensive rats.

* Lisinopril treatment showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the activity of oxidative stress markers AST and ALP, compared to normal rats.

* Treatment of with BSS and lisinopril showed slight variations in the concentration of serum electrolytes compared with normal and hypertensive rats.

* BSS significantly reduced calcium levels compared with the hypertensive group in the activation of oxidative stress.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The study shows that BSS is effective in restoring basal liver and kidney functions in hypertensive rats.

Taken altogether, beta-sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the protection of liver and kidney functioning, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Honey For the Treatment of #Eczematous Ear Disease With No Side Effects, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of acute otitis externa, according to studies.

Acute otitis externa is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the ear canal. Most cases of acute otitis externa are associated with the infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus due to improper cleaning.

However, people with seborrhoeic dermatitis caused by inflammation of greasy areas of the skin can also lead to infection of the ears.

The most common symptoms of acute otitis include itching, canal edema, canal erythema, and otorrhea.

Most cases of acute otitis externa are healed within days with proper ear drops. However, there is a rare case that the disease may take weeks or months to recover.

Chronic otitis externa shares the common symptoms of the acute form, accompanied by water retention severe ear pain, and temporary loss of hearing, due to building up thick and dry skin can build up inside the ear canal, leading to narrowing the ear canal.

Untreated chronic otitis externa can cause deafness.

Besides sharing the risk factors with the acute form, otitis externa can also be caused by infection due to the long-term use of hearing aids and earplugs.

Unlike the acute form, most cases of otitis externa are treated with steroid drops in addition to antibiotics accompanied by oral intake of pain medications such as ibuprofen.

Generally, oral antibiotics are not recommended, however, if the infection has spread beyond the ear canal, oral antibiotics may be applied.

According to the statistics, otitis externa affects 1–3% of people in America a year and 95% of people's complaints of the condition are acute.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of eczematous external otitis, scientists investigated the antibacterial potential of medical honey eardrops treatment of eczematous external otitis.

15 patients diagnosed with recurrent eczematous external otitis were selected and treated with medical honey eardrops for 2 weeks.

Honey treatment resulted in less discomfort and itching and decreased signs of eczema with no side effects, according to assays.

Although honey eardrops showed a strong in vitro inhibitory activity against all tested strains, they did not eradicate Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Honey eardrops also reduced the visual analog scale of ear complaints, and a score of eczema, and increased the eradication of bacterial infection. Most patients in the study, are satisfied with the use of honey eardrops for the treatment of their eczematous external otitis.

Dr. Henatsch D, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "The results of this preliminary study indicate a possible role of honey eardrops in eczematous ear disease".

Taken together, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of eczematous external otitis, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Ursolicacid Isolated From #Herbal #Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Processes Anti=#GastricCancer Activity, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Gastric cancer or stomach cancer is a condition characterized by the abnormal growth of cells in the stomach tissue.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the stomach tissue.

At stage 0, due to the gastric cancer cells being restricted or completely contained within the innermost layer of the lining, patients may not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis. If the tumor grows large enough, it may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, causing blood to leak into the stomach and localized severe pain.

Besides common symptoms of cancers, patients with gastric cancer also experience some specific symptoms such as persistent abdominal (belly) pain., vague discomfort in the abdomen, a sense of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating a small meal, and heartburn or indigestion.

If you are having some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out gastric cancer possibility.

Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the disease, such as family history, Helicobacter pylori infection, smoking, genetic preposition, certain stomach conditions, previous stomach surgery and type A blood, some researchers suggested that the most common cause of gastric cancer in the Western world is the Western diet-related disease.

Dr. Bertuccio P, the lead scientist at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, in the concern of diet pattern in the risk of gastric cancer, wrote, " An unfavorable role on GC emerged for the 'Western/unhealthy' dietary pattern, with an OR of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.21-1.89)" and "A favorable role on GC emerged for the 'Prudent/healthy', with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63-0.90], for the highest versus the lowest category".

The results strongly indicated the risk of gastric cancer is substantially higher in the Western diet group compared to the lower risk of a healthy diet.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb plant has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of gastric cancer, researchers at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine examined the effects of ursolic acid isolated from bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) against the pathogenesis of gastric cancer characterized by excessive proliferation, abnormal differentiation, and reduced apoptosis.

Ursolic acid, extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine bearberry, inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation and induced apoptosis.

Further assessment of anti-gastric cancer, researchers discovered that ursolic acid exhibited apoptotic activity through cancer cell degradation observed in the gastric cancer BGC-823 cells.

In other words, efficacy is associated with a translocation of cofilin-1 protein that activates the function of cytochrome c in programmed cell death from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm.

These results suggested that ursolic acid activated the function of proteins (the caspase cascade) associated with the cell death and apoptotic pathway.

Where Mitochondria are the major organelles involved in the biochemical execution of apoptosis

Dr. the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "Mitochondrial translocation of cofilin-1 might play a crucial role in the promotion of apoptosis and might be a key target for future treatment of human gastric cancer".

Taken together, Bearberry (herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) processed a major compound of ursolic acid may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with other primary medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of ursolic acid as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdoses and acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Bilberry Protects the #Vision by Inhibiting Proteins Associated with Cell Death and Autophagy Induced by BlueLight Damage, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic condition characterized by the breakdown and gradual loss of cells in the retina.

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. The function of the retina is to convert the light received into neural signals before sending them to the brain for visual recognition.
Most cases of retinitis pigmentosa are diagnosed during the teenage years and at birth. Some patients who carry the genetic preposition may develop the disease in later years.

The later diagnosed case is usually mild with slow progression compared to those presented in the teen years and at birth.

The most common symptoms of patients with retinitis pigmentosa are difficulty seeing at night and a loss of side (peripheral) vision. However, as the disease progress into the later stage, most patients also experience tunnel vision.

Conventionally, the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa is totally depending on the condition. The aim of treatment is to slow vision loss and improve the patient's quality of life.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa with no side effects examined the effects of Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and lingonberry (Vacciniumvitis-idaea) containing high amounts of polyphenols (anthocyanins, resveratrol, and proanthocyanidins) against blue light a high-energy or short-wavelength visible light-induced retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

According to the results from the cultured murine photoreceptor (661 W) cells exposed to blue LED light following treatment with B-ext, L-ext, or their constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, trans-resveratrol, and procyanidin B2), B-ext, L-ext, NAC, and their active components improved the viability of 661 W cells against the blue light damage.

The efficacy was found to be attributed to the injection of tested compounds in inhibiting the generation of intracellular ROS induced by blue LED light irradiation.

Furthermore, B-ext and L-d also protected the cells' integrity against the activation of proteins by stimuli associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

Moreover, B-ext, L-ext, and NAC inhibited proteins involved in cell death and autophagy against cells damaged by blue light.

Dr. Ogawa K the lead scientist said, "These findings suggest that B-ext and L-ext containing high amounts of polyphenols exert protective effects against blue LED light-induced retinal photoreceptor cell damage mainly through inhibition of ROS production and activation of pro-apoptotic proteins".

In a murine model of the photo-stressed retina, researchers examined the bilberry extract through a stomach tube in Balb/c mice (750 mg/kg body weight) with light-induced visual function impairment.

According to the tested assays, bilberry extract suppressed photo-induced apoptosis in the photoreceptor cell layer and shortening of the outer segments of rod and cone photoreceptors.

Bilberry extracts also reduced the levels of photo-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS), and oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers observed by the analysis.

In other words, bilberry inhibited the ER stress in the retina, and at least in part, in Müller glial cells.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, "bilberry extract attenuates photo-induced apoptosis and visual dysfunction most likely, and at least in part, through ROS reduction, and subsequent ER stress attenuation in the retina".

Taken altogether, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#AqueousExtract from Fruits of Herbal #Ashwagandha Processes a Significant Hypolipidemic Activity, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol produced by the liver plays an essential role in a moderate amount in orchestrating the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D, building strong cell walls, and aiding the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.

Hyperlipidemia or high blood cholesterol is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood.

Blood cholesterol can be classified into
* The high-density lipoprotein also known as good cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in a moderate amount.

In a healthy individual, unused cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can cause bad cholesterol to remain in the bloodstream, leading to hyperlipidemia.

The healthy ratio of total blood cholesterol ("bad"/ "good") is any number that is less than 4.

Patients with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. However, over time hyperlipidemia can cause plaque to accumulate on the arterial wall, leading to atherosclerosis, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL in the US.

Some researchers suggested that the hyperlipidemic prevalence in the Western world may correlate to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Karam I, the lead scientist in examing the said, "Hyperlipidemia, a group of metabolic disorders characterized by the elevated levels of lipids, is a major modifiable risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease [5]. These lipids include cholesterol, cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides. Increased levels of LDL are related to the development of atherosclerosis [15,16].

And, "The result showed that there was a significant increase in hyperlipidemia biomarker which includes TC, TG, LDL, and HDL. There were histological changes in organs which confirm the previous result of blood lipid. That means high-fat diet successfully induces hyperlipidemia in rats, to make disease model of hyperlipidemia.".

The life-long condition of hyperlipidemia is treatable. By a change of diet and daily moderate exercise, you may control the condition without medication.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of heart disease, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha on lowering blood cholesterol.

The study included rats induced by a high-fat diet treated with an aqueous extract of fruits of Withania coagulans for 7 weeks.

According to the tested analysis during the experiment, administration of the extract showed a significantly reduced elevated serum cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein levels.

In triton-induced hypercholesterolemia., the aqueous extract of fruits of Withania coagulans exerted a significant hypolipidemic activity.

Furthermore, according to the tested analysis of the liver tissues of treated hyperlipidemic rats, the extracts also inhibited the degenerative changes, compared to hyperlipidemic controls.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The hypolipidemic effect of W. coagulans fruits was found to be comparable to that of an Ayurvedic product containing Commiphora mukkul".
