Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.
In other words, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of the palette to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.
Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.
However, in severe cases, particularly in people with a weakened immune system, the inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation.
Diseases associated with low-grade inflammation include diabetes and cardiovascular.
Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.
In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.
Dr. Roma Pahwa in the classification of chronic inflammation wrote, "Chronic inflammation is also referred to as slow, long-term inflammation lasting for prolonged periods of several months to years. Generally, the extent and effects of chronic inflammation vary with the cause of the injury and the ability of the body to repair and overcome the damage".
And, "(The causes of chronic inflammation are) Failure of eliminating the agent causing acute inflammation, ..., Exposure to a low level of a particular irritant or foreign materials,...An autoimmune disorder,... Recurrent episodes of acute inflammation,... Inflammatory and biochemical inducers"
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory diseases researchers examined the effect of tomato ketchup extracts and bioactive from tomato ketchup on human monocytes and vascular endothelial cells (HUVEC).
HUVEC selected for the study were pre-treated for 1 h with either individual bioactive (7.5 µM lycopene, 1.4 µM α-tocopherol, or 55 µM ascorbic acid) or a combination of these three compounds, or with the hydrophilic or lipophilic tomato ketchup extracts or with the two extracts combined.
According to the tested assays, tomato ketchup extracts significantly reduced gene expression and pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-8 in HUVEC after inducing inflammation.
Furthermore, levels of anti-inflammatory release were increased observed by the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.
The effects were correlated with the reduction of IL-8 production in the presence of the test compounds and extracts.
In other words, lycopene found in tomato extract is one of the major bioactive compounds that induce the anti-inflammatory effect, and α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid appeared to strengthen the anti-inflammatory effect of lycopene.
In order to obtain more information about tomato anti-inflammatory activity, researchers analyzed the potential protective effects of phytochemicals in tomatoes on inflammation.
According to the nitric oxide (NO) assay, tomato extract exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264 macrophages.
Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly decreased after the injection of tomatoes.
The efficacy of tomatoes was attributed to the bioactive compound RF52 in the inhibition of the production of these proinflammatory mediators.
Dr. Kim YI, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that RF52 from tomatoes may have the potential to suppress inflammation by inhibiting the production of NO or proinflammatory cytokines during the interaction between adipocytes and macrophages".
Taken together, tomatoes may be considered functional food for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Foods and Herbs That Process Anti High Blood Pressure Activity with No Side Effects, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a herbal remedy for normalizing blood pressure, according to studies.
Hypertension is a chronic condition caused by abnormally high blood pressure.
High blood pressure is a condition of a cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
In high blood pressure individuals, due to the elevated blood pressure in your arteries, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the blood vessels.
In low blood pressure individuals, the reduced blood pressure in the arteries drops can cause the heart to pump blood at a slower rate than normal.
According to the standard guidelines, the levels of blood pressure are normal if it is more than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90).
People with blood pressure lower than 120/80 are considered normal without being accompanied by symptoms of light-head or dizziness.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the U.S. 29% or 100 million adults have hypertension during 2015–2016 and hypertension prevalence increased with age and was 33.2% among those aged 40–59 and 63.1% among those aged 60 and over.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.
Researchers in the course of finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of high blood pressure investigated the safety and effect of intrapulmonary administration (by inhalation) of 60 % honey solution, 10% dextrose, or distilled water in normal or diabetic subjects.
Twenty-four healthy subjects, 16 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and six patients with hypertension were selected to participate in the study.
Twelve healthy subjects were subjected to distilling water inhalation for 10 min, and after one week they received inhalation of honey solution (60% wt/v) for 10 min. Another 12 healthy subjects received inhalation of 10% dextrose for 10 min.
Honey treatment showed a mild reduction of blood pressure compared to no change in another group.
From a time perspective, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was reduced by honey inhalation in hypertensive patients at 60 and 120 min.
After taking into account co and confounders, researchers said, "Honey inhalation was safe and effective in reducing...elevated blood pressure in hypertensive patients".
Moreover, in order to obtain more information on honey antihypertensive activity, researchers investigated the aqueous extract obtained from the mixture of the fresh leaf of Persea Americana, stems, and a fresh leaf of Cymbopogon citrus, fruits of Citrus medica, and honey on ethanol and sucrose-induced hypertension in rats.
Rats included in the study were divided into eight groups of 6 rats each and daily treated for 5 weeks. The control group received distilled water (1 mL/kg) while rats of groups 2, 3, and 4 received ethanol 40 degrees (3 g/kg/day), 10% sucrose as drinking water, and the two substances respectively.
The remaining groups received additional sucrose and ethanol, the aqueous extract (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg) and nifedipine (10 mg/kg) respectively.
The group treated with ethanol and sucrose showed a significantly (p < 0.001) increased blood pressure and heart rate compared to distilled water-treated rats.
Chronic treatment of ethanol and sucrose also exerted significantly decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, observed by the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and elevated levels of oxidative stress observed by the stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) levels.
However, administration of the aqueous extract or nifedipine prevented all changes caused by chronic ethanol and sucrose, including hemodynamic, biochemical, oxidative, and histological impairments.
The finding clearly suggested that aqueous extract including honey possesses antihypertensive activity by the improvement of biochemical and oxidative status, through its antioxidant property.
Taken together, honey used alone or combined with other herbs may be considered anti-hypertension functional remedies with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) Decoction Processes Anti-Intestinal Metaplasia (IM) and Atypical Hyperplasia (AH) Property, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.
The stomach plays a critical role in aiding the digestive system by secreting acid and enzymes that digest food induced by the stomach muscles that contract periodically, to churn the food and enhance digestion.
Atypical hyperplasia is a precancerous condition characterized by the accumulation of abnormal cells.
Intestinal metaplasia is a pre gastric cancer condition caused by the change of cells in the stomach.
The exact causes of the condition are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that smoking and infection caused by H. pylori infection, genetic preposition, and environmental factors are some risk factors associated with the onset of intestinal metaplasia.
Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach lining in the beginning. At the advanced stage, the malignant cells can travel a distance away through blood and fluid circulation to infect other healthy tissue and organs.
Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.
Both atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer share the common symptoms of stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron deficiency anemia is found in the majority of patients with atrophic gastritis.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).
Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gastric diseases, scientists examined the efficacy of Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) decoction on intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH).
Where XWYP is a traditional Chinese Medicine formula containing Smilax glabrate, Hedyotis diffusae, Taraxacum mongolicum, Caesalpinia sappan, Paeonia alba, Cyperus rotundus, Bletilla striata, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, etc.
According to the results of 138 cases of intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the gastric mucosa of chronic gastritis that was treated by Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) orally 5-7g, for a period from 2-4 months, compared to control, the decoction showed a significant effect rate of IM was 91.3% and that of the AH was 92.16% compared to the control group of 21.3% and 14.46% respectively.
More precisely, XWYP not only had marked therapeutic effects for IM and AH but also showed no toxic effects in the animal experiments revealed no toxic effect,
These results strongly suggested that a safety guarantee was provided for its clinical application.
Taken altogether, Dandelion in combination with other Chinese medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia (AH), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Smoothie of Cherries, Ginger and Peppermint Inhibit Diseases Associated with Symptoms of #Chronic and Acute Pain, Scientists Show
Kyle J. Norton
The finding of a natural source for the treatment of Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease has been running into many obstacles, many ingredients shown initially with promising results in animal studies have not produced the same potential in large sample sizes and multi centers human trials.
Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease is an inherited disease (Mutations in the PKHD1)causing abnormal functions of the liver and reno-inducing morbidity and mortality in children.
Until today, there is no cure, or treatment options for autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, depending on complications, such as chronic pain.
The smoothie for people with chronic pain in Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease
Yield: 2 servings (about 8 ounces each)
1 1/2 cups cherries cups pineapple
1 slice of ginger root
1 cup of peppermint herbal tea
1. Place all ingredients in a blender and puree for about 1 minute
2. Blend on high speed for about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed. Add more green tea drinks if needed
3. Serve immediately
Cherries(1), ginger(4), and peppermint(7) may be the next combination of therapeutic ingredients as a pain reliever for the treatment of chronic pain in patients with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease.
Cherry, a fleshy drupe, is the fruit of many plants of the genus Prunus cultivated all over the world for commercial profit due to its health potential.
In a randomized double-blind crossover study of 58 non-diabetic patients, oral administration of cherry juice improved the Western Ontario McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, inducing symptom relief, including pain for patients with mild to moderate knee Osteoarthritis, through lowering the C-reactive protein CRP levels(1). According to the Oregon Health & Science University, the study of fifty-four healthy runners with ingesting 355 mL bottles of tart cherry juice twice daily for 7 days, during a strenuous running event can minimize post-run muscle pain(3).
Dr. Kuehl KS said, "Tart cherries appear to possess similar effectiveness in treating the inflammatory reaction seen in both acute and chronic pain syndromes encountered among athletes and non-athletes with chronic inflammatory disease")2) they may be used as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient on prevention, treatment, and recovery of soft tissue injury and pain.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root is the genus Zingiber, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil, used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
In primary dysmenorrhea patients, ginger is effective in pain relief without inducing adverse effects and may be used as an alternative treatment for primary dysmenorrhea, according to the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences(4) and treatment of ginger in students with primary dysmenorrhea for 5 days also showed a statistically significant effect on relieving intensity and duration of pain, the Shahid University, the study suggested(5).
Furthermore, in osteoarthritic patients, Dr. Therkleson T said," Ginger therapy activated a marked relief of osteoarthritis symptoms that progressively improved over the 24 weeks, with no negative effects reported. Ginger therapy needs to be considered by nurses caring for specific personality types with osteoarthritis"(6).
Peppermint is a hybrid mint with small purple or white flowers and downy leaves, in the genus Mentha, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to Europe. The herb has been used in folk medicine as an analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, decongestant, and agent and to relieve gas, nausea, and stomach pain due to irritable bowel, intestinal cramps, indigestion, infection, etc
According to the Translational Research Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders (TARGID), peppermint oil, with antispasmodics may be considered the first-line treatment for abdominal pain in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)(7).
Menthol, the cooling natural product of peppermint, according to the study conducted by Yale University School of Medicine, is widely used for the relief of acute and inflammatory pain in sports injuries, arthritis, and other painful conditions, through activating the methol-induced sensation of cooling(8).
Dr. Shen YH and Dr. Nahas R. said," Peppermint oil alleviates IBS symptoms, including abdominal pain" and "several complementary and alternative therapies can be recommended as part of an evidence-based approach to the treatment of IBS; these might provide patients with satisfactory relief and improve the therapeutic alliance"(9).
In the 76-year-old woman whose pain had been resistant to standard therapies, the application of neat peppermint oil showed to immediately improve her pain with persistence for 4-6 hours after application of the oil(10).
Taken together, People with Chronic Pain due to autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease should drink the smoothie as much as they can, depending on digestive and liver toleration.

#Herbal Ashwagandha Extracts Inhibit Parmaters Associated with Nephrotoxicity, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organ in the human body only filter out blood but also balances body fluids by eliminating them and removing them through urinary secretion.
Renal protection is a strategy that protects the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.
Kidney disease is a medical condition that causes the reduced function of the kidney due to damage.
In other words, the progression of kidney damage may affect the function of the kidney to filter blood
against toxins.
Most patients with chronic kidney disease are also found to have conditions of diabetes or high blood pressure.
Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness
In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.
The worse cases of kidney damage can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins to accumulate in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.
Kidney damage can be classified into 4 different stages
* Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min). In this stage of kidney patients are asymptomatic.
* Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min), Patients in this stage also experience no symptoms.
*Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min) and 3B moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min.
Most patients are asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of mild swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal.
* Stage 4 CKD (GFR = 15-30 mL/min). Most patients in this stage experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problems associated with weakened kidney function
* Stage 5 EndStage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min). Patients at this advanced stage are very close to renal failure or renal failure. Symptoms are getting worse.
Where eGFR is short for estimated glomerular filtration rate.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of kidney disease, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera on rats-induced nephrotoxicity.
The study included selected rats orally administrated by The root extract of three different doses of W. somnifera (viz., 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg) for 14 days before GEN treatment and thereafter concurrently with GEN (100 mg/kg) for 8 days.
Based on the tested differentiation, the GEN treatment group showed significant nephrotoxicity associated with kidney injury by an increase in kidney weight, urea, creatinine, urinary protein, and glucose, and a significant reduction in body weights and potassium by enhancing the overexpression of free radicals.
Compared to somnifera doses of W. somnifera at 250 and 750 mg/kg, the administration of 500 mg/kg showed the strongest effect in reversing the aforementioned changes observed by the microscopically antioxidant evidence.
In other words, W. somnifera protected the kidney against acute toxicity in a dose-dependent manner.
However, there were no significant changes in the levels of sodium in the experimental animals compared to the control.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "nephroprotective effect of Withania somnifera, which could be by enhancing antioxidant activity with natural antioxidants and scavenging the free radicals".
Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of periodontitis, pending to the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Herbal Ashwagandha Exerts a Strong and Positive Effect on Immediate and General Memory, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Memory is one of the major functions of the brain that collects and stores data or information which is retrieved when needed.
In other words, memory is the retention of information over time that have a strong influence on future action.
Memory impairment is a condition of partial or complete loss of memory, depending on the quality of the neuron that has been affected.
Memory impairment other than the physical impact is a progressive disease that can lead to permanent loss of memory due to the gradual loss of neurons in the brain.
Memory impairment can be acute or chronic.
In acute impairment, memory is a temporary loss in most cases associated with physical impact on the brain that causes injury of neurons.
Chronic memory impairment is the loss of memory that can get worse over time found mostly in the elderly with neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia.
In elderly or aging-induced memory loss is associated with the deterioration of a region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, the hippocampus, and the reduced hormones and protein that protect and repair brain cells and stimulate neural growth.
The most common risk factors associated with memory loss in the general population are long-term use of certain medications, excessive alcohol drinking, smoking, drug abuse, depression, nutrient deficiency, stroke, and daily stress.
However, some researchers suggested the rise of memory impairment in the elderly probably is correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Scott E. Kanoski, the lead scientist in the review of the risk cognitive impairment in the Western diet consumption wrote, "Intake of saturated fats and simple carbohydrates, two of the primary components of a modern Western diet, is linked with the development of obesity and Alzheimer's Disease".
And, "Western diet intake is associated with cognitive impairment, with a specific emphasis on learning and memory functions that are dependent on the integrity of the hippocampus".
The results clearly stated if you are a Western diet follower, you are at a higher risk of memory impairment compared to healthy diet individuals.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of brain health, researchers examined the efficacy and safety of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal) on memory and cognitive functioning in adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
The prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 50 adults assigned to the treatment of either ashwagandha-root extract (300 mg twice daily) or placebo for eight weeks.
According to the analysis of Wechsler Memory Scale III subtest scores for logical memory, at week 8, the ashwagandha treatment group exerted significant improvements in both immediate and general memory, compared with the placebo group.
Futhermore, verbal paired associates I (p = 0.042), faces I (p = 0.020), family pictures I (p = 0.006), and logical memory II (p = 0.006) scores were also significantly increased compared to placebo.
According to the scores of the Eriksen Flanker task (p = 0.002), the Wisconsin Card Sort test (p = 0.014), Trail-Making test part A (p = 0.006), and the Mackworth Clock test (p = 0.009), ashwagandha treatment group also displayed a significantly greater improvement in executive function, sustained attention, and information-processing speed also compared to placebo.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ashwagandha may be effective in enhancing both immediate and general memory in people with MCI as well as improving executive function, attention, and information processing speed.".
Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the improvement of brain health, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

#Phytochemical #Alliin Processes Anti Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Obesity, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Myocardial ischemia injury is a medical condition caused by severe impairment of coronary blood supply-induced damage or dysfunction of the cardiac tissue.
Myocardial reperfusion is the process to restore the coronary blood flow after a period of coronary blockage that leads to severely reduced or no oxygen .blood flow to the heart.
The condition severity is totally dependent on the intensity and duration of the coronary occlusion.
According to the statistics from the WHO, in 2008, 12% of all death or approximately 7,254,000 deaths worldwide have directly or indirectly caused by myocardial ischemia injury.
In other words, coronary heart disease causes 1/4 of total death in the worldwide populations, and 50% of the death is associated with other forms of heart disease.
The most common symptoms of myocardial ischemia injury are neck or jaw pain, shoulder or arm pain, a fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, and fatigue accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
The most common causes of myocardial ischemia injury are a result of the plaque built-up on the coronary arterial wall due to a long-term unhealthy diet with a higher amount of fat and trans fat, red meat, processed food, and fewer fruits and vegetables
Most patients with CHD also are found to have a sedentary lifestyle.
In other words, the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades induced obesity is the major culprit that celebrates the risk of myocardial ischemic injury.
Dr. Meng F, the lead scientist wrote, "Obese patients are more sensitive to myocardial ischemia, which has been linked with high mortality rates".
And "(High fat diet-induced)An impaired MIF/AMPK activation response (cellular stress response) and consequently reduced membrane Glut4 expression (in the heart muscle) may play an important role in increasing myocardial susceptibility to I/R in obesity".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the prevention of the tissue damage caused by blood supply returns to tissue, researchers examined the role of alliin in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury.
In a mouse model of I/R injury, injection alliin showed a significant effect in reducing the area at risk and the infarct area.
Compared with the I/R group, alliin also improved the cardiac function in the mice I/R + alliin group. The expression of hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) induced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes due to I/R was also attenuated by the administration of alliin.
As confirmed by the tested assays, alliin also exerted myocardial protection by increasing the heart's ability to withstand the ischaemic insult.
In vivo, alliin decreased cell apoptosis and increased autophagy activity against the initiation of tissue damage after I/R injury in the tested animal.
Moreover, the injection of 3-Methyladenine autophagy inhibitor commonly used to selectively block autophagy was found to reduce the function of alliin observed in the tested animal.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "All the results indicated that alliin alleviates myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury by promoting autophagy".
Taken together, alliin may be considered supplements for the protection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
