#Fennel Regulates Immune Function Associated with the Onset of #ChronicInflammatoryDiseases, Acccording to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal fennel may have a strong implication in reduced risk and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, some scientists postulated.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,..

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common digestive disorder, affecting the function of the large intestine.

According to the statistic, approximately 10 -15% of the world's population is infected by the disease, depending on geographic variation.

According to the study of 121 patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms of IBS defined by an Irritable Bowel Syndrome- symptom severity score (IBS-SSS) 100-300 and abdominal pain score 30-70 on a 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), randomly assigned to Curcumin-Fennel (CU-FEO) or placebo (2 capsules b.d. for 30 days), treatment group demonstrated a significant effect in decreased mean scores observed by the relative IBS-SSS and the pain score in compared to placebo group.

In the overall performance, intake of CU-FEO group showed an incredible improvement of all symptoms with the percentage of symptom-free patients significantly higher by 26 % compared to 7% of the placebo group, particularly, in all domains of IBS-quality of life(QoL), without inflicting any side effect.

Furthermore, in the period of the experiment, curcumin + fennel treatment displayed a progressive decrease in intensity and a greater proportion of patients reported≥50% reduction in abdominal pain.

In the length of the experiment, the treated group expressed a substantial improvement of health-related QoL observed through the reduced use of health resources and increased work productivity, progressively compared to the baseline taken before the treatment.

Dr. Portincasa P, the lead author after taking into account of other co-founders, said, "CU-FEO was safe, well-tolerated and induced symptom relief in patients with IBS" and " CU-FEO significantly improved symptoms and quality of life in IBS patients over 30 days".

Some researchers suggested that the efficacy of fennel in reduced symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome was possibly associated with the major chemical component anethole of fennel oil seeds in exerting a relaxant effect on intestinal smooth muscle, similar to those medicine used as neurotransmitter dopamine in inhibiting the spasmodic activity in the facilitation of abdominal pain.

Moreover, the application of fennel also expressed a strong impact on bowel symptoms through orchestrated intestinal inflammation and immune activation against the onset and progression of the disease.

Injection of anethole in vitro and Vivo parameters of chicken immunity during experimental avian coccidiosis exerted an important modulation of the immune mediators interleukin-6 (IL6) in response to infection and tissue injuries and contribution to host defense; interleukin-8 (IL8) in stimulated production of neutrophils, basophils, and T-cells during the inflammatory process; interleukin-10 (IL10), an anti-inflammatory factor which plays a critical role in reduced overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in precipitated cells damage and cells death and tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 15 (TNFSF15) in response to acute and chronic inflammation by induced the development of the new blood vessel to promote the site of infection.

These result addressed an impression of fennel anethole effect in improved symptoms and quality of life of patients with IBS through inhibited the increased number of inflammatory cells in the colonic and ileal mucosa activated by low-grade intestinal inflammation

The low-grade inflammation in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by microscopic and molecular abnormalities in a large subset of patients today has been focused by some scientists in searching for new conventional treatment for the disease through designed clinical trials for drugs that target this pathophysiologic mechanism.

Taken together, fennel with major bioactive compound anethole may be considered as a functional food and secondary therapy in reduced risk and progression and used the combination with conventional medicine for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome

#Herbal Anise Reduces Parameters Associated with the Symptoms of Functional Dyspepsia, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD), some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners, and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic disorder characterized by sensation and movement (peristalsis) in the upper digestive tract.

In the study of a total of 180 patients attending the gastroenterology clinic, 107 with the diagnosis of postprandial distress syndrome according to Rome III criteria, randomly assigned to an anise group of 47 patients received anise powders, 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks and placebo group of 60 patients received placebo powders (cornstarch), 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks researchers at the joint study lead by the Iran University of Medical Sciences indicated that

Anise treatment scored a significant improvement in all domains of SF-36(The Short Form (36) Health Survey) at week 12 compared to a placebo group, although both groups scored similarly at the baseline.

More specifically, at week 12, the mean physical component score was 141 in the placebo group and 251 in the Anise treatment group compared to the baseline scores of 159 and 167, respectively, and the mean mental component score at week 12 was 135 placebo group and 233 in anise group in compared to 172 and 165 respectively.

The domain of SF-36 completed by the patients includes vitality, physical functioning, bodily pain, general health perceptions, physical role functioning, emotional role functioning, social role functioning, and mental health, used widely in managed care organizations and Medicare for routine monitoring and assessment of care outcomes in adult patients. The lower the score is an indication of more disability compared to the higher the score of less disability.

The strong improvement of physical and mental scores in the Anise group compared to the baseline and placebo may be associated to Anise in contributed to increasing quality of life in patients of functional dyspepsia, through reduction of symptoms intensity.

Further differentiation, in a total of 107 patients attending the gastroenterology clinic, aged 18-65 years, diagnosed with PDS according to ROME III criteria, randomly assigned to a group of 47 patients receive either received anise powders, 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) or placebo involved 60 patients and received placebo powders (corn starch), 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks. researcher found that anise group expressed a significant effect in reduced all symptoms at weeks 4 and 12 but retching, nausea and vomiting in compared to the control group and at the baseline.

The examination of the mean total scores of the FD severity scale in the anise group also expressed improvement at weeks 2, 4, and 12 compared to insignificantly different of the two groups before the intervention.

Anise intervention also demonstrated a decrease significantly of mean severity scores of epigastric fullness, epigastric discomfort, epigastric burning/pain, early satiety, bloating, belching, and loss of appetite compared to epigastric pain, epigastric fullness, and belching increased significantly in the placebo group after intervention.

Moreover, Anise group also exerted a strong improvement in the mean pain score compared to the placebo, probably as a result of its anti-spasmolytic feature.

However, after taking into account other co-founders such as factors in causes of FD and anise effects on the broad spectrum of pharmacological effects on GI, nervous, muscular, and immune systems, researchers concluded that there is no surprise that Anise application showed a significant improvement of symptoms in patients with FD.

The information findings may be astonishing, but the study also found to induce certain limitations, including limited external validity of the results with small sample sizes and short follow-up periods.

Taking together, herbal Anise not only improves the quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia but may also be considered as an adjunct therapy in combination with conventional standard medicine for reduced symptoms and treatment of functional dyspepsia.

#GreenTea #EGCG Modulates the Expression of 6-OHDA induced Neurotoxicity to Cause Parkinson's disease, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be considered as a functional food and iron chelator in reducing the risk and progression of Parkinson's disease, some scientists suggested.

Iron chelation therapy is a primary and standard treatment for patients with iron overload.

Green tea is a precious drink with process number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, that causes severe depletion of glutamatergic and dopaminergic inputs in the striatum.

Investigation of the green tea EGCG effect on risk and progression of PD has been found to associate with many mechanisms involved in a number of aspects.

Application of metal chelation was found to ameliorate the expression of ROS in the induction of oxidative stress through a chain of reaction and precipitation of aggregation of alpha-synuclein and beta-amyloid peptides deposit in the brain, the main leading causes to the onset of PD.

In iron abnormality PD subjects, oxidopamine, also known as 6-hydroxydopamine or 2,4,5-trihydroxy phenethylamine (6-OHD), a neurotoxic synthetic organic compound was found to disrupt iron metabolism, leading to overexpression of the iron induction of dyshomeostasis cause of iron toxicity and oxidative damage in dopaminergic neurons.

Green tea major polyphenol, (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate used in metal chelation, ameliorated iron-dependent free radicals located in the subcellular compartments and cellular membranes, through the effect in inhibited iron input and exhibited iron output in brain areas where it preferentially accumulates in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinsons' disease.

Further analysis of the neurotoxin 6-OHDA causes of iron unstable equilibrium, green extract GECG administration improved the function of hepcidin, a liver-derived hormone in regulated iron dyshomeostasis and gene expression of the iron metabolism through expressions of iron regulatory proteins (IRP1 and IRP2) in regulated the RNA level, between the transcription and the translation of the gene in the expression of the iron homeostasis.

Indeed, In the differentiation of neurotoxin 6-OHDA induced iron dyshomeostasis has been shown to increase oxidative stress in damage to neuron cells, green extract GECG effects demonstrated significant inhibition of free radical and iron-free radical expression in the cellular membranes through the antioxidant activities and anti-inflammatory system and expression of nuclear factor-like 2(Nrf2) in stimulated production of antioxidant in protection against oxidative damage during injury and inflammation; heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) in increased production of superoxide dismutase and catalase against ROS and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARĪ³) in regulated production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and cytokines.

By reducing the overexpression of oxidative damage to neuron cells through regulation of iron-related factors as mentioned above, iron chelator EGCG can counteract these adverse effects and prevent the onset of PD.

Further study of the mechanism of disruption of iron metabolism by 6-OHDA in PD cell line N27, discovered that application of the iron chelator EGCG also disrupts the iron dyshomeostasis in N27 cells (dopaminergic neural cell line) induced by 6-OHDA through regulating iron transporters and regulators expressions, such as DMT1 with function in the mediation of the entry of dietary iron into these mucosal cells and TfR, a carrier protein for transferrin with function in import iron into the cell and regulated response to intracellular iron concentration and hepcidin, a central regulator in maintain iron homeostasis.

Dysregulation of hepcidin production results in a variety of iron disorders.

Additionally, in 6-OHDA induced neurotoxicity to cause PD, administration of green tea GECG also reduced the intracellular iron retention by decreasing the iron importers and increasing iron exporters, through regulation of the function of iron-regulated transporters, such as ferroportin.

Interestingly, there was a report suggested that the intervention of 3 cups of green tea daily for 3 months improved the antioxidant status and reduced oxidative damage in early PD patients without affecting their iron status.

The evidence revealed that green tea bioactive polyphenol, (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate may be considered as an iron chelator in the regulation of PD progression.

#Aloe-Emodin Fopund in #Herbal #Aloevera Modulates Proteins and Genes Associated with #LungCancer Cell Apoptosis, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wounds, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

Lung cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells. In the Us, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 people deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to 2007 statistics.

Aloe-emodin has been studied extensively through our scientific community for its effects against cancer including the study of induced apoptosis in lung carcinoma cell lines CH27 (human lung squamous carcinoma cell) by breaking of DNA strands (DNA ladders and sub-G(1) formation) and regulating of the expression of Bcl-2 family proteins (a suppressor of apoptosis). In the study of the effects of aloe-emodin-induced cell death in the human lung nonsmall cell carcinoma cell line H460, aloe-emodin was involved regulating apoptotic cell death through the class of mitogen-activated protein kinases(p38). These results suggested that aloe-emodin found in ALOE VERA may be a potential agent for preventing and treating lung cancer.

#DriedPeas and #BeanFibers inhibit Parameters Associated with the Onset of #MetabolicSyndrome, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of dried peas fiber daily and regularly may reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome, some institute studies suggested.

Metabolic syndrome is a biochemical and physiological factor associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
The dried pea is a small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, genus Pisum belongings to the family Fabaceae with a healthy source of proteins, fibers, vitamins, and minerals.

In the study to investigate the effects of frequent consumption (five cups/week over 8 weeks) of pulses (yellow peas, chickpeas, navy beans, and lentils), compared with counseling to reduce energy intake by 2093 kJ/d (500 kcal/d), on risk factors of the MetSyn of in 2 groups (nineteen and twenty-one subjects, respectively) of overweight or obese (mean BMI 32·8 kg/m2) adults, researchers after adjusting to many confounders after 8 weeks of experiment suggested that
1. Pulse group expressed an HDL and C-peptide increased by 4·5 and 12·3 %, respectively compared to a decrease by 0·8 and 7·6 %, respectively, in the energy-restricted group.
2. Insulin AUC decreased in both females and males on the energy-restricted diet by 24·2 and 4·8 %, respectively, and on the pulse diet, it decreased by 13·9 % in females and 27·3 % in males respectively.

Based on the result interpretation, Dr. Mollard RC, the lead author said," Frequent consumption of pulses in an ad libitum diet reduced risk factors of the MetSyn".

C-peptide is a substance produced by the beta cells in the pancreas with the function to connects insulin's A-chain to its B-chain in the insulin molecule.

Insulin AUC is the area under the curve in a 2 dimension coordinate used to measure the insulin concentration in blood insulin vs. time.

Unfortunately, the method used to calculate AUC may affect the interpretation of whether or not an intervention was effective, according to some researchers.

In support of the above study, the Fahan University of Medical Sciences conducted a cross-sectional study of 425 subjects 35 to 55 y of age, using a food-frequency questionnaire. including in the report of blood pressure, waist circumference, glucose, triacylglycerols, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to measure the risk of the metabolic syndrome defined based on Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines, after examining the returned questionnaire, researchers found that daily intake of these groups of the population can be classified into 5 patterns, namely,

1. A Western pattern (high in sweets, butter, soda, mayonnaise, sugar, cookies, the tail of a lamb, hydrogenated fat, and eggs)
2. A prudent pattern (high in fish, peas, honey, nuts, juice, dry fruits, vegetable oil, liver and organic meat, and coconuts and low in hydrogenated fat and non-leafy vegetables)
3. A vegetarian pattern (high in potatoes, legumes, fruits rich in vitamin C, rice, green leafy vegetables, and fruits rich in vitamin A),
4. A high-fat dairy pattern (high in high-fat yogurt and high-fat milk and low in low-fat yogurt, peas, and bread),
5. A chicken and plant pattern (high in chicken, fruits rich in vitamin A, green leafy vegetables, and mayonnaise and low in beef, liver, and organic meat)

And in comparison to all 5 groups
1. The western pattern was associated with greater odds of having increased triacylglycerol and blood pressure
2. The prudent pattern was positively associated with a prevalence of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels
3. The vegetarian dietary pattern was inversely associated with a risk of an abnormal fasting blood glucose level

Adult Treatment Panel III guideline is used as a classification of LDL, Total, and HDL Cholesterol (mg/dL).

Dr. Amini M, the lead author emphasized, " Major dietary patterns were significantly associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome".

In other words, there is no specific diet pattern that can be considered a daily diet in reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome. A mix of ingredients of the above diet selectively may be necessary for people who are at higher risk of such syndrome

Interestingly, in the study to develop baked and extruded functional foods from Metabolic Syndrome (MS) specifically designed ingredient mixes with optimum amino acid makeup using key food ingredients with functional properties such as whole cereals, legumes, skimmed milk powder, along with flaxseeds and fenugreek seeds, researchers after taking into account of other confounders suggested that six ingredient mixes from above of bread and four ingredient mixes each of extruded snack and noodles showed a specifically designed for MS patients who had significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher lysine, crude protein, ash and fiber and low carbohydrates in compare control whole wheat flour products, hence appropriate for MS patients.

Taken together, dried peas and bean fibers may be used conjunction in with a vegetarian diet to provide a strong impact in ameliorated risk and treatment of the metabolic syndrome.

#GreenTea, Bioactive Epigallocatechin-3-O-(3-O-methyl) Gallate (EGCG3"Me)Enhances the Immune Function Against the Allergic Initiation, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a particular and special effect in ameliorating autoimmunity in the precipitation of allergic diseases, some scientists opinionated.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Allergic diseases are a class of conditions characterized by an overreaction of the immune system to substances that cause little or no harm to the body.

Investigation of the effect of green tea bioactive compounds in reduced abnormal immune allergic expression was found to associate with certain mechanisms.

According to the Kyushu University, Epigallocatechin-3-O-(3-O-methyl) gallate (EGCG3"Me) isolated from cv. "Benifuuki" green tea expressed strong and positive activities in inhibiting the mast cell production in precipitated allergic inflammatory responses and suppressed the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcĪµRI) function in the expression of immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody isotype involved in allergy disorder through 67 kDa laminin receptor in the mediation of the suppressive effect by epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate.

Further analysis also found that the bioactive compound binds to 67 kDa laminin receptor to attenuate allergic expression induced by mast cells by suppressing the myosin light chain phosphorylation in the regulated immune response to eosinophil (a type of disease-fighting white blood cell) migration in the tissue, a characteristic feature of allergic diseases and ERK1/2 phosphorylation signaling by modulation of inflammatory cytokines expression.

In a double-blind clinical study of the green tea effect on subjects exposed to Japanese cedar pollinosis, administration of Benifuuki green tea containing O-methylated catechins showed significantly relieving allergic symptoms induced by pollen such as nose blowing, and eye itching compared with the placebo group without affecting the In normal immune responses.

More interestingly, in mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells activated by antigens, bioactive compound epigallocatechin-3-O-(3-O-methyl) gallate (EGCG3″Me) in combination with ginger extract also demonstrated a strongly anti-delay-type allergic effect by suppressing cytokines secretion of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-Ī±), a cell-signaling protein (cytokine) in response to systemic inflammation in the acute phase infection. and macrophage Inflammatory Proteins(MIP-1Ī±), a chemokine-involved host response to invading bacteria and viruses.

Compared to the dose of 5.1 times higher in EGCG, injection of 8.5 mg of EGCG3″Me exhibited much stronger anti-allergic activity than 43.5 mg of EGCG, observed by the area under the curve AUC (area under the drug concentration-time curve; min Ī¼g/ml) of 6.72 ± 2.87 in EGCG and 8.48 ± 2.54 in EGCG3″Me.

Taken together, green tea with abundantly bioactive Epigallocatechin-3-O-(3-O-methyl) gallate (EGCG3"Me) may be considered a functional food for protection against autoimmune response stimulated by unharmful allergens.

#Garlic Phytocompounds Poccess Anticancer Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc. but Garlic appears to be generally safe although allergic reactions may occur.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, have become progressively worse and damaged other healthy tissues. Sometimes cancer cells spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.

A recent study led by author Dr. Oommen S indicated that allicin, the main ingredient found in garlic induced the formation of apoptotic bodies, nuclear condensation, and a typical DNA ladder in cancer cells, causing cell death.

Researchers in the study of ingredient allicin also showed that the phytochemical was capable of inducing an increase in the rate of apoptosis by affecting the expression of the cell cycle division and negation of pro-inflammation.

In cancer HL60 and U937 cell lines, allicin inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway by involving the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway by GSH depletion and by changes in the intracellular redox status.

In the research of the function of 20 compounds from garlic, researchers at the Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala, suggested that garlic Phytocompounds Possess Anticancer Activity by Specifically Targeting Breast Cancer Biomarkers.

Other compounds found in garlic such as organosulfur, its extract, and phytocompounds also suppress cancer cell proliferation and induced cell cycle arrest.

Therefore, people with or without cancers may consider adding a portion of garlic whole food into their diet for the prevention, management, and treatment of the disease.
