#Antioxidant #Lycopene Inhibits #SkinCancer Associated with Enhancing the Expression of the Tight Junction Complexes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Skin cancer is a medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the skin tissues.
Most cases of skin cancer start in the cells on the surface of the outermost inner lining tissue before penetrating into deeper layers.

After growing in size at the advanced stage, the cells of the tumor may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through blood and fluid circulation.

The most common secondary metastasis of skin cancer is breast, lung, and colon.

Believe it or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. As of today, there are 58 million Americans living with skin cancer.

Approximately, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.

If you have experienced some of the symptoms such as a sore that doesn't heal or comes back after healing, pale white or yellow flat areas that look like scars, raised and scaly red patches, small, smooth, and shiny lumps that are pearly white, pink or red, a pink growth with raised edges and indents in the center and a growth that has small blood vessels on the surface of the skin, you may be on the early stage of skin cancer, please check with your doctor immediately.

The 5-year survival of all people with melanoma of the skin is 92% compared to 100% of those localized skin cancer.

Out of many prevalent factors that cause skin cancer, some researchers suggested exposure to UVB is one of most risk associated with skin cancer onset in the US.

Dr. Calzavara-Pinton P, the lead scientist said, "BCC is much more strongly related to measures of intermittent ultraviolet exposure (particularly those of childhood or adolescence) than to measures of cumulative exposure".

And, " In contrast, SCC is more strongly related to constant or cumulative sun exposure. Photobiological studies have clarified that sunlight and UVB radiation are complete carcinogens for AK and SCC although the relationship with UVA exposure is much less known".

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of skin cancer without side effects, researchers evaluated the effect of lycopene, a kind of carotenoid inhibitory function on skin tumor cell migration.

In the human sSCC cell line COLO-16 selected for the study, the administration of lycopene inhibited the cell proliferation and migration of COLO-16 cells without affecting the normal keratinocytes.

Furthermore, the inhibitory activity was found by exhibiting Zonula occludens (ZO)-1, inhibition of ZO-1 expression, and its failure to accumulate at cell junctions (ZO-1 and claudin-1) have been found to induce cancer progression.

In other words, lycopene inhibited the SCC cell line COLO-16 proliferation by enhancing the expression of the tight junction complexes that regulate the permeability of epithelial against cancer cells.

Additionally, cell cycle division proteins (JNK and ERK ) in the induction of mitogen associated with the decreasing levels of ZO-1 and claudin-1 were also inhibited by the injection of lycopene.

More precisely, lycopene inhibited the progression of human sSCC cell line COLO-16 by reducing the proteins involved in promoting cell cycle division and increasing cancer cell permeability and autophagy,

Based on the findings researchers said, "This study indicates that lycopene might be a useful chemopreventive agent against cSCC".

Taken together, lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Anethole found in #Fennel Exerts a Orotective Effect Against Micro Imbalance in Initiated #GastrointestinalDisorder, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and therapeutic effect in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of gastrointestinal dysbiosis, some scientists suggested.

Dysbiosis is the most common gastrointestinal tract disorder, caused by imbalanced microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the small intestines.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the investigation of the effect of some herbal essential oil on the risk of dysbiosis, researchers found that essential oil isolated from fennel exerts lesser inhibited function in a reduced concentration of the growth of potential pathogens compared to the isolation of herbal Carum carvi, Lavandula angustifolia, Trachyspermum copticum, and Citrus aurantium var. Amara without inducing any adverse effects.

Further analysis also suggested that ingestion of fennel essential oil although decreases levels of bad micro bacteria concentration, they do not contribute to a substantial detrimental impact on beneficial members of the microflora.

The above differentiation was supported by the joint study conducted by the Scientific Board Member of Islamic Azad University, on 180-day-old broiler chicks to test the effect of the composition of Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) and Foeniculum vulgare (Fenne) on antimicrobial activity of gut microflora traits.

Application of the composition to samples chick randomly assigned to groups fed with control diet (without additives), diet accompanied with 2 mentioned mixed powder plants (0.5% of total diet), diet with TF mixed powder plant and diet with FV mixed powder plant, at the end of the experiment, demonstrated a significant improvement of balance of the gastrointestinal microflora, through an expression of increased average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG).

Additionally, the efficacy of the composition also decreased the concentration of the number of G- bacteria (NGB), the number of Coli form bacteria compared to the sample taken before the experiment.

Indeed, Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) and Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) treated group displayed an enormous anti-antimicrobial activity of the gut compared to the control group.

In tested porcine gut, anethole, the bioactive compound found in essential oil isolated from fennel displayed a substantial antimicrobial activity against commensal and pathogenic bacteria, through inhibited the chloride secretion with function in major determinant of mucosal hydration throughout the gastrointestinal tract, induced by 5-HT metabolic signaling of gut microbes and theophylline adverse effect in induction of gut disorder.

At a dose of 0.5 mmol/L, anethole exerted a protective effect against micro imbalance in initiated gastrointestinal disorder by inhibition of excessive chloride secretion.

Taken together, the information finding suggested that fennel and its bioactive compound anethole may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk, and progression and combined with standard medicine for the treatment of intestinal dysbiosis, without inducing intolerant side effects.

#Isothiocyanates (ITC) Found in #CruciferousVegetables Inhibit the Freeradical Induced Inflammation through Their Antioxidant Activity, Acccording to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural expression by the immune system in induction of white blood cells for protect our body against infection with foreign organisms,

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, etc.

In a randomized controlled trial in healthy young adults, isothiocyanates found in cruciferous vegetables exhibited anti-inflammatory effects through altered serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, C-reactive protein (CRP)), in increased increases in the presence of inflammation in the body tumor, and necrosis factor (TNF) α,, involved in systemic inflammation.

Intake of Cruciferous Vegetables has been shown to reduce the circulation of proinflammatory cytokines, namely IL-6 through inhibiting the expression of an abnormal function of gene Glutathione S-Transferase Theta 1(GSTT1) metabolism in lower levels of glutathione, the antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.

Dr. Navarro SL, the lead researcher said, " IL-6 concentrations were significantly lower on day 14 of (the double-dose cruciferous) (2xC) and (cruciferous plus apiaceous (carrot family) 1xC+A diets than with the basal diet,...respectively]" and " Twenty-four-hour urinary isothiocyanate excretion was not associated with any of the inflammation markers overall; however, IL-6 was inversely associated with total isothiocyanate excretion in GSTM1".

In support of the above study, isothiocyanates (ITC) from cruciferous vegetables showed to increase levels of serum of Glutathione S-transferases (GST), the enzymes that detoxify a broad range of free radicals in reduced risk of inflammation, particularly in GSTM1-null women.

Furthermore, the phytochemical also increased GSTA1/2, the antioxidant enzyme in GSTM1-null/GSTT1-null men.

Taken together, the intake of Cruciferous Vegetables regularly is associated to lower the effect of proinflammatory cytokines, particularly in adults with gene GSTT1.

#Healthyfood #Carrot Chemical Compounds Process Anti-Pathogenic Microorganisms Properties, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in gobbling up foreign microbial organisms before they can cause infection and damage to the host tissue, some scientists suggested.
The results of the veggie inhibition of micro-bacterial expression in an increased risk of infection were demonstrated by respectable institutes, including Iowa State University and Université de Monastir.

Infectious tissue caused by microbial organisms can induce transmissible disease or communicable diseases through the production of toxins.

The most common symptoms of infection are a fever. This is the result of the reaction of the immune response in stimulated overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines to protection the damage or injuries against micro pathogens.

However, over repression of pro-inflammatory factors can also induce tissue damage and forming of scars.

Other common symptoms also include chills and sweats, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion,....and burning or pain with urination

Some researchers suggested that most people with a balance of antioxidants, produced by tissue enzyme and free radicals are normally performed quite well against microorganisms during the time of infection.

Unluckily, people with a weakened immune systems caused by reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes may need to gobble up some anti-inflammatory agents to speed up the recovery.

Conventional antibiotics may be helpful, however, they can cause severe adverse effects.

Carrot, a root vegetable with orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

In the investigate the effect of essential oils extracted from Daucus carota L. (Apiaceae) seeds in inhibited the spread of microbial organisms through comparison of 4 volatile compounds β-bisabolene (mean content of 39.33%), sabinene (8.53%), geranyl acetate (7.12%), and elemicin (6.26%), researchers found that application of all compounds exert strong activity in inhibited expression of Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium).

The result of efficacy probably was due to carrot seed extract's protection of cell membrane against microorganisms in initiated cell infection

Normally, infectious agents invade the cell membrane as the entry point to alternate DNA of the healthy cells.

In vitro, injection of all major compounds also showed a potential effect against Candida albicans, a pathogenic yeast.

Furthermore, the essential oil of carrot seed extract also exerted similar antibacterial and antifungal activities compared to the individual compound.

Some researchers suggested that antioxidants may also have a profound effect in the initiated expression of free radical cytotoxicity in facilitated damage and death of microorganisms, particularly in the infectious cells.

Interestingly, the precipitated cytotoxicity induced by reactive oxygen species and carrot antioxidants did not cause harm to healthy cells.

Also, the expression of antioxidants in the found compound ameliorated the immune response to protect our body against the stimulation of microorganisms in initiated production of inflammatory cytokine without reduced immune activity.

Overexpression of proinflammation is not only associated with increased symptoms of swelling, pain, and fever but also increased risk of cell damage and apoptosis in the site of infection, leading to abnormal healing skin.

Additionally, in the analysis of the carrot essential oil from flowers and roots of Daucus carota L. ssp. Mauritius obtained by hydrodistillation, researchers at the Université de Monastir reported that out of thirty-two and six compounds were identified in flower and root oils, phenolic derivatives (76.3%), myristicin (31; 29.7%), and dillapiole (32; 46.6%) constituted to main fraction demonstrated most protective effect in the inhibition of a series of common human pathogenic bacteria.

According to the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays, the found chemical compound also inhibited some clinically and environmentally isolated strains.

The evidence suggested that carrots with abundant bioactive compounds may be used as a functional food for reduced risk and treatment of micro bacterial infection.

#RawGarlic Combined with Radiotherapy Induces Apoptosis of Lung Cancer in the G2/M Stage, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Many researchers have raised questions about the quality of the herbs because geographic differences, time of growth and harvest, etc. may affect their's potency. I do believe, these questions can only be answered by experienced herbalists.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

Lung cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. A most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells. In the Us, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 people deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to 2007 statistics.

A recent study suggested that garlic may be used as a chemoprevention and treatment of lung cancer.

According to the study by Medical Research Center, College of Medicine allyl sulfur compounds and garlic extract found in garlic exhibited anti nonsmall cell lung cancer cell line effects through interference on tumor cell division and tumor cell proliferation.

Benzo(a)pyrene-induced precancerous carcinogenesis in human lung cells, oil-soluble organosulfur compounds in garlic induced suppression of cell proliferation, cell cycle regulation, attenuation of ROS formation, inhibition of DNA damage, after administration.

The examination of the association between raw garlic consumption and lung cancer, a case-control study conducted between 2005 and 2007 in Taiyuan, China, showed that compared with no intake, raw garlic intake is associated with a lower risk of development of lung cancer with a dose-response pattern.

In fact, the Epidemiologic data collected by face-to-face interviews using a standard questionnaire among 1,424 lung cancer cases and 4,543 healthy controls also supported the negation of garlic intake and lung disease and suggested that garlic may potentially serve as a chemopreventive agent for lung cancer.

Dr. Yang GQ, the lead researcher at the 107th Hospital of the People's Liberation Army said, "Black garlic extract (BGE) could have a significant inhibitory action on the growth of lung cancer Lewis cells. The combination of BGE and radiotherapy (by 60Co gamma) significantly induced Lewis cells' apoptosis in the G2/M stage".

Whole-food garlic in reducing the risk and treatment of lung cancer probably due to the effect of its phytochemicals. Adding a portion of garlic to your diet is beneficiary for increased protection against lung cancer development.

#Fennel Regulates Immune Function Associated with the Onset of #ChronicInflammatoryDiseases, Acccording to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal fennel may have a strong implication in reduced risk and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, some scientists postulated.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,..

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common digestive disorder, affecting the function of the large intestine.

According to the statistic, approximately 10 -15% of the world's population is infected by the disease, depending on geographic variation.

According to the study of 121 patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms of IBS defined by an Irritable Bowel Syndrome- symptom severity score (IBS-SSS) 100-300 and abdominal pain score 30-70 on a 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), randomly assigned to Curcumin-Fennel (CU-FEO) or placebo (2 capsules b.d. for 30 days), treatment group demonstrated a significant effect in decreased mean scores observed by the relative IBS-SSS and the pain score in compared to placebo group.

In the overall performance, intake of CU-FEO group showed an incredible improvement of all symptoms with the percentage of symptom-free patients significantly higher by 26 % compared to 7% of the placebo group, particularly, in all domains of IBS-quality of life(QoL), without inflicting any side effect.

Furthermore, in the period of the experiment, curcumin + fennel treatment displayed a progressive decrease in intensity and a greater proportion of patients reported≥50% reduction in abdominal pain.

In the length of the experiment, the treated group expressed a substantial improvement of health-related QoL observed through the reduced use of health resources and increased work productivity, progressively compared to the baseline taken before the treatment.

Dr. Portincasa P, the lead author after taking into account of other co-founders, said, "CU-FEO was safe, well-tolerated and induced symptom relief in patients with IBS" and " CU-FEO significantly improved symptoms and quality of life in IBS patients over 30 days".

Some researchers suggested that the efficacy of fennel in reduced symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome was possibly associated with the major chemical component anethole of fennel oil seeds in exerting a relaxant effect on intestinal smooth muscle, similar to those medicine used as neurotransmitter dopamine in inhibiting the spasmodic activity in the facilitation of abdominal pain.

Moreover, the application of fennel also expressed a strong impact on bowel symptoms through orchestrated intestinal inflammation and immune activation against the onset and progression of the disease.

Injection of anethole in vitro and Vivo parameters of chicken immunity during experimental avian coccidiosis exerted an important modulation of the immune mediators interleukin-6 (IL6) in response to infection and tissue injuries and contribution to host defense; interleukin-8 (IL8) in stimulated production of neutrophils, basophils, and T-cells during the inflammatory process; interleukin-10 (IL10), an anti-inflammatory factor which plays a critical role in reduced overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in precipitated cells damage and cells death and tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 15 (TNFSF15) in response to acute and chronic inflammation by induced the development of the new blood vessel to promote the site of infection.

These result addressed an impression of fennel anethole effect in improved symptoms and quality of life of patients with IBS through inhibited the increased number of inflammatory cells in the colonic and ileal mucosa activated by low-grade intestinal inflammation

The low-grade inflammation in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by microscopic and molecular abnormalities in a large subset of patients today has been focused by some scientists in searching for new conventional treatment for the disease through designed clinical trials for drugs that target this pathophysiologic mechanism.

Taken together, fennel with major bioactive compound anethole may be considered as a functional food and secondary therapy in reduced risk and progression and used the combination with conventional medicine for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome

#Herbal Anise Reduces Parameters Associated with the Symptoms of Functional Dyspepsia, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD), some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners, and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic disorder characterized by sensation and movement (peristalsis) in the upper digestive tract.

In the study of a total of 180 patients attending the gastroenterology clinic, 107 with the diagnosis of postprandial distress syndrome according to Rome III criteria, randomly assigned to an anise group of 47 patients received anise powders, 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks and placebo group of 60 patients received placebo powders (cornstarch), 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks researchers at the joint study lead by the Iran University of Medical Sciences indicated that

Anise treatment scored a significant improvement in all domains of SF-36(The Short Form (36) Health Survey) at week 12 compared to a placebo group, although both groups scored similarly at the baseline.

More specifically, at week 12, the mean physical component score was 141 in the placebo group and 251 in the Anise treatment group compared to the baseline scores of 159 and 167, respectively, and the mean mental component score at week 12 was 135 placebo group and 233 in anise group in compared to 172 and 165 respectively.

The domain of SF-36 completed by the patients includes vitality, physical functioning, bodily pain, general health perceptions, physical role functioning, emotional role functioning, social role functioning, and mental health, used widely in managed care organizations and Medicare for routine monitoring and assessment of care outcomes in adult patients. The lower the score is an indication of more disability compared to the higher the score of less disability.

The strong improvement of physical and mental scores in the Anise group compared to the baseline and placebo may be associated to Anise in contributed to increasing quality of life in patients of functional dyspepsia, through reduction of symptoms intensity.

Further differentiation, in a total of 107 patients attending the gastroenterology clinic, aged 18-65 years, diagnosed with PDS according to ROME III criteria, randomly assigned to a group of 47 patients receive either received anise powders, 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) or placebo involved 60 patients and received placebo powders (corn starch), 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks. researcher found that anise group expressed a significant effect in reduced all symptoms at weeks 4 and 12 but retching, nausea and vomiting in compared to the control group and at the baseline.

The examination of the mean total scores of the FD severity scale in the anise group also expressed improvement at weeks 2, 4, and 12 compared to insignificantly different of the two groups before the intervention.

Anise intervention also demonstrated a decrease significantly of mean severity scores of epigastric fullness, epigastric discomfort, epigastric burning/pain, early satiety, bloating, belching, and loss of appetite compared to epigastric pain, epigastric fullness, and belching increased significantly in the placebo group after intervention.

Moreover, Anise group also exerted a strong improvement in the mean pain score compared to the placebo, probably as a result of its anti-spasmolytic feature.

However, after taking into account other co-founders such as factors in causes of FD and anise effects on the broad spectrum of pharmacological effects on GI, nervous, muscular, and immune systems, researchers concluded that there is no surprise that Anise application showed a significant improvement of symptoms in patients with FD.

The information findings may be astonishing, but the study also found to induce certain limitations, including limited external validity of the results with small sample sizes and short follow-up periods.

Taking together, herbal Anise not only improves the quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia but may also be considered as an adjunct therapy in combination with conventional standard medicine for reduced symptoms and treatment of functional dyspepsia.
