Asparagus may have a potential and profound effect in reducing the risk of diabetes in patients with no diabetes and diabetic complications in patients with diabetes, some studies suggested.
Diabetes is a condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.
The actual causes of diabetes are debatable. As researchers do not know why some people without genetic mutations are susceptible to disease development, while others do not.
Researchers believed that the onset of diabetes type 2 is associated with a set of risk factors. According to the retrospective cohort study, using the data of 8337 adolescent respondents from Add Health (1994-2008) including 5131 non-Hispanic Whites, 1651 non-Hispanic Blacks, 1223 Hispanics, and 332 American Indians/Alaska Natives led by College of Medicine, Washington State University,
* Pre-diabetes and diabetes were more prevalent in non-Hispanic blacks (55% and 12%, respectively) than in American Indians/Alaska Natives (43% and 11%),
* Higher body mass index and family history of diabetes were associated with a higher risk of pre-diabetes and diabetes.
* Female sex was associated with a lower risk of pre-diabetes compared to male counterparts.
Furthermore
* Physical inactivity, sedentary behaviors, or fast food consumption are associated with independent and preventive risk factors that induce the early onset of prediabetes and diabetes.
Most people with prediabetes do not experience any symptoms. However, untreated diabetes or diabetes that do not manage properly, may lead to serious complications of cardiovascular diseases, kidney damage, nerve, foot, and eye damage, skin wounds that can heal,....... and dementia such as Alzheimer's disease.
Asparagus is a flowering plant belonging to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.
The vegetable has been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.
In Streptozotocin (90 mg/kg) injected in 2-d-old Wistar rat pups to induce non-obese type 2 diabetes, researchers found that rats treated with a methanolic extract of A. officinalis seeds (250 and 500 mg/kg per d) expressed lowering fasting blood glucose, improved serum insulin, total antioxidant status and qualitative and quantitative in β-cell function(1) compared to a placebo group.
Additional observation also discovered that the methanolic extract also exerts a significant effect in reducing complications of kidney disease by inhibiting renal hypertrophy, polyuria, hyperfiltration, microalbuminuria, and abnormal changes in the renal tissue(1).
Furthermore, asparagus extract enhanced the production of antioxidants from the host in neutralizing the unbalanced ratio of antioxidants and free radicals in initiated oxidative stress(1) induced by the injection of Streptozotocin (90 mg/kg) effectively.
Moreover, according to the study by Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Pharmacy, oral administration of ethanolic extract of Asparagus racemosus (EEAR) at a dose level of 100 and 250 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks, significantly reduced the expression of streptozotocin-induced early diabetic nephropathy in compared with a control group(2).
Dr. Somania R, the lead researcher said, " A. racemosus treatment significantly decreased plasma glucose, creatinine, ..... total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Renal hypertrophy,....and abnormal changes in the renal tissue".
This efficacy can be attributed to the extract's anti-diabetic effects by improving insulin secretion and β-cell function(2).
Interestingly, the 21 days continuous administration of aqueous extract of asparagus by-product (AEA) to examine the hypoglycaemic effect in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model indicated(3), found
* Rat treated with the extract showed decreased fasting serum glucose and triglyceride levels but markedly increased body weight and hepatic glycogen level.
* In an oral glucose tolerance test, both the blood glucose level measured at 30, 60, and 120 min after glucose loading and the area under the glucose curve showed a significant decrease after AEA treatment.
* The extract also exhibited hypoglycaemic and hypotriglyceridaemic effects in preventing diabetic complications associated with hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia (3).
Taking it all together, there is no doubt that many aspects have contributed to the effectiveness of asparagus in reducing the risk of diabetic complications and treatment of diabetes, but a large amount of asparagus extract intake should only be prescribed by related field specialists.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers clinical studies and trials performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti-diabetes possibilities.

#Tomatoes Improve the Anti-Inflammatory Activity Against the Lung Injury Caused by Breathing Hyperoxic Gas
Kyle J. Norton
Pulmonary diseases are a class of diseases associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, and lung cancer.
In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.
The most common pulmonary diseases are
* Asthma
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages and mostly starts during childhood.
* Pneumothorax
Pneumothorax is a condition of collection of air within the pleural cavity, from either the outside or from the lung.
* Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a condition of an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi, the larger and medium-sized airways that carry airflow from the trachea into the lung parenchyma.
* COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)** Emphysema is a type of COPD with a long-term and progressive condition that causes shortness of breath, depending on the stage of lung function associated with the damage of tissues of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs.
** Chronic bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammation of the lung’s bronchi that cause the increased production of mucus in the lung associated with difficulty of breathing.
*Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer are derived from epithelial cells
* PneumoniaPneumonia is a condition of the inflammation of the lung caused by bacteria, such as bacterial infection, Streptococcus pneumonia, or influenza viruses in most cases.
* Pulmonary edema
Pulmonary edema is a condition of fluid accumulation in the air spaces and parenchyma of the lungs that lead to difficulty breathing and respiratory failure.
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of pulmonary disease, researchers examined the dietary supplementation of tomato juice, TJ protection against the developing lung injury caused by breathing hyperoxic gas.
Neonatal mice (C57BL6/J) breathed either 65% O2 (hyperoxia) or room air from birth until postnatal day 7 (P7d)selected for the study underwent necropsy at P7d or raised in room air until adulthood (P56d). In a subset of both groups, drinking water was replaced with TJ (diluted 50:50 in water) from late gestation to necropsy.
In P7d, TJ injection increased pulmonary total antioxidants (TAC) and COL1α1 expression associated with pulmonary fibrosis and attenuated the hyperoxia-induced increase in production ROS without affecting the changes in lung structure.
Furthermore, in P56d, TJ increased TAC, decreased oxidative stress, and reversed the hyperoxia-induced increase in bronchiolar smooth muscle by ameliorating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "TJ supplementation during and after neonatal exposure to hyperoxia protects the lung from some but not all aspects of hyperoxia-induced injury".
In other words, TJ protects the lung against injury by stimulating the expression of the circulation of antioxidant concentration.
Taken together, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #TurmericExtracts Inhibit #Psychiatric Overtones and Proteins Assoviated with the Death of Neurons, Reserachers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a herbal spice that processed bioactive ingredients for the treatment of neuro-disorder with no side effects, according to studies.
Neuroprotection is an action involved in the use of a natural substance to protect the integrity and viability of neurons against damage or death.
Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.
The most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease.
The disease has been found to negatively influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.
There are many risk factors that cause the onset of the progressive death of brain neurons. Genetic preposition, medical condition, such as alcoholism, brain cancer, or a stroke in the brain.
A prolonged period of toxins and toxic chemicals accumulated that affect brain function also has a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.
Out of many factors, some researchers suggested that the prevalence of obesity may process some negative implications in stimulating the rise of neurodegenerative disease in older adults in the Western world.
Dr. Daniel Shalev, the lead scientist wrote, "So how does obesity or diabetes contribute to a 50% increase in the risk of dementia?".
And, "Many of the same processes that affect coronary arteries and visceral organs also impact the brain. Inflammation leads to the activation of microglia and astrocytes. This causes the release of cytokines and reactive oxidants, ultimately leading to neuronal dysfunction or death. Critically, this process can unleash a vicious cycle: dying neurons can cause more inflammation, thereby creating a cascade of neurodegeneration".
The findings strongly suggested if you are obese, your risk of dementia is substantially higher compared to non-obese individuals.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound that processes neuroprotective activity, researchers evaluated the neuroprotective effects of extracts from the radix of C. aromatica (ECAs, Turmeric) on free radical damage cells.
The study included the model of oxidative stress damage (H2O2-damaged PC12 cells) induced by injection of 400 µM H2O2.
Compared to ECAs at the same doses, 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) from turmeric showed markedly the increase in the rate of neuron survival and enhancement of the antioxidant enzyme activities via the inhibition of the level of ROS.
In other words, 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) from turmeric exerted better neuron-protective and antioxidant activity than of ECAs.
Furthermore, the 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) also attenuated the intracellular Ca2+ overloading in the induction of psychiatric overtones, such as depression, anxiety, cognitive dysfunction and decreased the activation of proteins and matrixes involved cell apoptosis, similar to those of ECAs.
The efficacy of the 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) against the degeneration of neurons was attributed to the presence of the active compound diarylheptanoids.
Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "These findings indicated that the effects of HCECA and MCECA on inhibiting the cells damage induced by H2O2 in PC12 are better than other extracts from the radix of C. aromatica".
In order to reveal more information about turmeric neuroprotective effects, researchers evaluated the effects of curcumin against nicotine-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation in an animal model.
This study included 60 adult male rats divided randomly into six groups. Group 1 received 0.7 ml/rat normal saline, and group 2 received 6 mg/kg nicotine. Groups 3, 4, 5, and 6 were treated concurrently with nicotine (6 mg/kg) and curcumin (10, 20, 40, and 60 mg/kg i.p. respectively) for 21 days.
According to the Open Field Test (OFT), curcumin-treated groups (40 and 60 mg/kg) reduced nicotine-induced motor activity disturbances.
Before the injection of curcumin nicotine treatment showed the increase of lipid peroxidation observed by the overexpression of ROS, proinflammatory cytokines, and protein associated with neuron apoptosis in the hippocampus.
Furthermore, nicotine also reduced the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the tested rats in the hippocampus.
Injection of curcumin reversed all alternation by attenuating nicotine-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation; and elevating the levels of P-CREB and BDNF associated with the improvement of cognitive function,
Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compounds, particularly curcumin may be considered a supplement for the protection of neuron integrity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Coffee Caffeine Improves Alertness, Rapid Reaction and Cognitive and Information Processing Capacity in Healthy Individuals
Kyle J. Norton
Intake of coffee caffeine may have a potential effect in enhance alertness and rapid reaction, a renowned institute study suggested.
Coffee, second to tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In randomized, double-blind, parallel groups designed to rate anxiety, alertness, and headache before and after 100 mg caffeine and again after another 150 mg caffeine given 90 min later, or after a placebo on both occasions, researchers indicated that caffeine intake expressed a clean effect in elevated alertness in compared to placebo.
Further differentiation also found that caffeine did not increase alertness in low caffeine intake participants, and noncaffeine administrated to medium and high intake groups displayed a reduced alertness effect and caffeine abstinence reduced alertness and consumption in comparison to baseline.
Other, in the study of 30 healthy volunteers received equal volume drinks equivalent to either 1 or 2 cups of tea (containing 37.5 mg or 75 mg caffeine), or coffee (75 mg or 150 mg caffeine), or water, in a randomized five-way crossover design with drinks administered on four occasions during the day (0900, 1300, 1700 and 2300 hours), researchers found that there was no difference in all group in expression of alertness, but following the second beverage caffeinated coffee at 75 mg, there was a significantly improved reaction time (P<0.05), in compared to tea at the same dose and placebo.
Dr. Hindmarch I, the lead author said, " ingestion of caffeinated beverages may maintain aspects of cognitive and psychomotor performance throughout the day and evening when caffeinated beverages are administered repeatedly" and "This study also demonstrates that day-long tea consumption produces similar alerting effects to coffee, despite lower caffeine levels".
More importantly, in a total of 19 healthy volunteers ingested 400 ml black tea, coffee, caffeinated water, decaffeinated tea or plain water on three occasions through the day (0900, 1400, and 1900 hours), researchers filed the following reports
1. Caffeine ingestion was associated with a rapid (10 min) and persistent improvement of alertness and again independent of time of day, but did not acutely alter CFF threshold.
2. In comparison to the caffeine consumed group, water, and the decaffeinated group expressed a steady decline in alertness (LARS) and cognitive capacity over the whole day.
3. Tea and coffee were similar on all measures, including alertness
4. Tea and coffee ingestion was associated with rapid increases in alertness and information processing capacity if the tea was drunk throughout the day, compared to other groups.
Taking it all together, there is no doubt that coffee intake has an enormous and profound effect on improved alertness and rapid reaction if drinking throughout the day, but reduced intake or absence of coffee caffeine may cause the opposite effect.

#Curcumolide, Found in #Herbal #Turmeric Processes Alleviating Retinal Inflammatory Activities, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the diabetes complications caused by long-term uncontrol levels of blood glucose in patients with diabetes, leading to vision loss.
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is swelling in an area of the retinal macula, a consequence of diabetic retinopathy.
Cause of diabetic retinopathy is a result of unmanageable high blood sugar from diabetes associated with damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina.
Other eye diseases often found in patients with uncontrol blood glucose are
* Cataract, a condition of clouding of the eye’s lens.
Believe it or not, patients with diabetes are 2-5 times more likely to develop cataracts compared to a healthy individual.
* Glaucoma, a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Diabetic has nearly doubled the risk of glaucoma, compared to nondiabetics.
At the early stage of hyperglycemia, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, the condition affects vision caused bt eh bleeding from abnormal retinal blood vessels.
Conventionally, diabetic retinopathy diagnosed and treated early was found to reduce diabetic retinopathy risk by 95%. However, late-stage diabetic retinopathy may cause irreversible vision loss.
Please make sure you have eye exams more frequently for preventive measures.
By managing your blood glucose by changing your lifestyle with moderate exercise and taking your medication as direct diabetic retinopathy may be preventable.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antioxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the prevention of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of curcumin, an active ingredient of turmeric on diabetic retinopathy.
In vivo, curcumin inhibited the proliferation of retinal endothelial cells in tested animals.
Curcumolide, a bioactive compound found in turmeric, demonstrates a significant effect in alleviating retinal inflammatory activities both in vitro.
In vivo of the STZ-induced diabetic rat model and in TNF-α-stimulated HUVECs, injection of curcumolide exerted anti-inflammatory effects against the inflammatory induction of retinal damage.
Furthermore, curcumolide also alleviated retinal vascular permeability and leukostasis and attenuated the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in diabetic retinas.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "These data suggest potential treatment strategies against diabetic retinopathy, particularly in the early stages of the disease".
Taken together, turmeric processed with a high amount of curcumolide may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The Effects of Celery on Hyper and Hypo-Thyroidism, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Celery-induced decrease of thyroid hormone levels may be used as a whole food medicine to balance thyroid hormone in patients with hyperthyroidism, a renowned institute study suggested.
According to an experimental study of 40 male rats divided into 5 groups of eight rats each, rats received celery leaf extract with doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg showed serum levels of T3 (0.95±0.04 and 0.95±0.06, respectively) and T4 (5.42±0.85 and 5.87±0.89, respectively) hormones decreased compared to a control group.
Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae, cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranged in a conical shape joined at a common base.
Unfortunately, according to the joint research paper led by Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences, intake of celery may induce hyperthyroidism, as a report indicated that a 48-year-old, with no history of any thyroid diseases, was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism due to daily consumption of 4 g of dried celery leaves for 45 days.
Dr. Rouhi-Boroujeni H, the lead author said, " Hyperthyroidism may be induced by consumption celery" and " Therefore, it can be assumed that celery induces hyperthyroidism as a side effect of this herb if it is used for a long term"
Furthermore, celery has been shown to interact with conventional medicine used to regulate thyroid hormone inpatient with hypothyroidism. According to the study, in a report of a 55-year-old woman showed no improved hypothyroidism with a daily dose of thyroxine 100 micrograms after injecting celery seed tablets.
Due to conflict results, it is up to readers to consult with their herbalists, before consumption of a large amount of celery seeds supplement daily in the long term for the amelioration of hyperthyroid or hypothyroidism.

#Ashwagandha (300 mg) Improves Stress Associated with Poor Eating Behaviors, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over some time, leading to the release of the hormone cortisol and adrenaline.
Most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.
Over time unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of developing physical and psychological syndromes, including anxiety and depression.
The most common symptoms of chronic stress are irritability, difficulty concentrating, rapid, disorganized thoughts, fatigue, headaches, feeling helpless, low self-esteem, and difficulty sleeping.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of digestive problems, changes in appetite, and loss of sexual desire.
Dr. Mohd. Razali Salleh in the examination of chronic stress in the risk of diseases wrote, "The relationship between stress and illness is complex. The susceptibility to stress varies from person to person. Among the factors that influenced the susceptibility to stress are genetic vulnerability, coping style, type of personality, and social support".
And, "Stress also alters the acid concentration in the stomach, which can lead to peptic ulcers, stress ulcers or ulcerative colitis. Chronic stress can also lead to plaque buildup in the arteries (atherosclerosis), especially if combined with a high-fat diet and sedentary living. The correlation between stressful life events and psychiatric illness is stronger than the correlation between medical or physical illness".
In other words, chronic stress if untreated can cause a wide range of chronic diseases, including psychiatric illness.
Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of chronic stress, researchers examined the effect of Ashwagandha Root Extract on obese patients with long-term stress and anxiety.
The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial included a total of 52 subjects under chronic stress who received either Ashwagandha (300 mg) or a placebo twice daily.
According to the tested differentiation at the start and at 4 and 8 weeks, including the Perceived Stress Scale and Food Cravings Questionnaire, the Ashwagandha treatment group showed a significant improvement in stress associated with poor eating behaviors, including feelings of disinhibited eating, binge eating, hunger, and more ineffective attempts to control eating.
Moreover, according to the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, the Ashwagandha treatment group is more satisfied including body weight, and happier than the control.
No adverse effects had been reported by participants.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The outcome of this study suggests that Ashwagandha root extract can be used for bodyweight management in adults under chronic stress".
Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
