#Coffee Caffeine Improves Alertness, Rapid Reaction and Cognitive and Information Processing Capacity in Healthy Individuals

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of coffee caffeine may have a potential effect in enhance alertness and rapid reaction, a renowned institute study suggested.

Coffee, second to tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In randomized, double-blind, parallel groups designed to rate anxiety, alertness, and headache before and after 100 mg caffeine and again after another 150 mg caffeine given 90 min later, or after a placebo on both occasions, researchers indicated that caffeine intake expressed a clean effect in elevated alertness in compared to placebo.

Further differentiation also found that caffeine did not increase alertness in low caffeine intake participants, and noncaffeine administrated to medium and high intake groups displayed a reduced alertness effect and caffeine abstinence reduced alertness and consumption in comparison to baseline.

Other, in the study of 30 healthy volunteers received equal volume drinks equivalent to either 1 or 2 cups of tea (containing 37.5 mg or 75 mg caffeine), or coffee (75 mg or 150 mg caffeine), or water, in a randomized five-way crossover design with drinks administered on four occasions during the day (0900, 1300, 1700 and 2300 hours), researchers found that there was no difference in all group in expression of alertness, but following the second beverage caffeinated coffee at 75 mg, there was a significantly improved reaction time (P<0.05), in compared to tea at the same dose and placebo.

Dr. Hindmarch I, the lead author said, " ingestion of caffeinated beverages may maintain aspects of cognitive and psychomotor performance throughout the day and evening when caffeinated beverages are administered repeatedly" and "This study also demonstrates that day-long tea consumption produces similar alerting effects to coffee, despite lower caffeine levels".

More importantly, in a total of 19 healthy volunteers ingested 400 ml black tea, coffee, caffeinated water, decaffeinated tea or plain water on three occasions through the day (0900, 1400, and 1900 hours), researchers filed the following reports
1. Caffeine ingestion was associated with a rapid (10 min) and persistent improvement of alertness and again independent of time of day, but did not acutely alter CFF threshold.
2. In comparison to the caffeine consumed group, water, and the decaffeinated group expressed a steady decline in alertness (LARS) and cognitive capacity over the whole day.
3. Tea and coffee were similar on all measures, including alertness
4. Tea and coffee ingestion was associated with rapid increases in alertness and information processing capacity if the tea was drunk throughout the day, compared to other groups.

Taking it all together, there is no doubt that coffee intake has an enormous and profound effect on improved alertness and rapid reaction if drinking throughout the day, but reduced intake or absence of coffee caffeine may cause the opposite effect.

#Curcumolide, Found in #Herbal #Turmeric Processes Alleviating Retinal Inflammatory Activities, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the diabetes complications caused by long-term uncontrol levels of blood glucose in patients with diabetes, leading to vision loss.
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is swelling in an area of the retinal macula, a consequence of diabetic retinopathy.

Cause of diabetic retinopathy is a result of unmanageable high blood sugar from diabetes associated with damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina.

Other eye diseases often found in patients with uncontrol blood glucose are
* Cataract, a condition of clouding of the eye’s lens.
Believe it or not, patients with diabetes are 2-5 times more likely to develop cataracts compared to a healthy individual.

* Glaucoma, a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Diabetic has nearly doubled the risk of glaucoma, compared to nondiabetics.

At the early stage of hyperglycemia, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, the condition affects vision caused bt eh bleeding from abnormal retinal blood vessels.

Conventionally, diabetic retinopathy diagnosed and treated early was found to reduce diabetic retinopathy risk by 95%. However, late-stage diabetic retinopathy may cause irreversible vision loss.

Please make sure you have eye exams more frequently for preventive measures.

By managing your blood glucose by changing your lifestyle with moderate exercise and taking your medication as direct diabetic retinopathy may be preventable.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antioxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the prevention of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of curcumin, an active ingredient of turmeric on diabetic retinopathy.

In vivo, curcumin inhibited the proliferation of retinal endothelial cells in tested animals.

Curcumolide, a bioactive compound found in turmeric, demonstrates a significant effect in alleviating retinal inflammatory activities both in vitro.

In vivo of the STZ-induced diabetic rat model and in TNF-α-stimulated HUVECs, injection of curcumolide exerted anti-inflammatory effects against the inflammatory induction of retinal damage.

Furthermore, curcumolide also alleviated retinal vascular permeability and leukostasis and attenuated the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in diabetic retinas.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "These data suggest potential treatment strategies against diabetic retinopathy, particularly in the early stages of the disease".

Taken together, turmeric processed with a high amount of curcumolide may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The Effects of Celery on Hyper and Hypo-Thyroidism, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Celery-induced decrease of thyroid hormone levels may be used as a whole food medicine to balance thyroid hormone in patients with hyperthyroidism, a renowned institute study suggested.

According to an experimental study of 40 male rats divided into 5 groups of eight rats each, rats received celery leaf extract with doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg showed serum levels of T3 (0.95±0.04 and 0.95±0.06, respectively) and T4 (5.42±0.85 and 5.87±0.89, respectively) hormones decreased compared to a control group.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae, cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranged in a conical shape joined at a common base.

Unfortunately, according to the joint research paper led by Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences, intake of celery may induce hyperthyroidism, as a report indicated that a 48-year-old, with no history of any thyroid diseases, was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism due to daily consumption of 4 g of dried celery leaves for 45 days.

Dr. Rouhi-Boroujeni H, the lead author said, " Hyperthyroidism may be induced by consumption celery" and " Therefore, it can be assumed that celery induces hyperthyroidism as a side effect of this herb if it is used for a long term"

Furthermore, celery has been shown to interact with conventional medicine used to regulate thyroid hormone inpatient with hypothyroidism. According to the study, in a report of a 55-year-old woman showed no improved hypothyroidism with a daily dose of thyroxine 100 micrograms after injecting celery seed tablets.

Due to conflict results, it is up to readers to consult with their herbalists, before consumption of a large amount of celery seeds supplement daily in the long term for the amelioration of hyperthyroid or hypothyroidism.

#Ashwagandha (300 mg) Improves Stress Associated with Poor Eating Behaviors, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over some time, leading to the release of the hormone cortisol and adrenaline.
Most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.

Over time unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of developing physical and psychological syndromes, including anxiety and depression.

The most common symptoms of chronic stress are irritability, difficulty concentrating, rapid, disorganized thoughts, fatigue, headaches, feeling helpless, low self-esteem, and difficulty sleeping.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of digestive problems, changes in appetite, and loss of sexual desire.

Dr. Mohd. Razali Salleh in the examination of chronic stress in the risk of diseases wrote, "The relationship between stress and illness is complex. The susceptibility to stress varies from person to person. Among the factors that influenced the susceptibility to stress are genetic vulnerability, coping style, type of personality, and social support".

And, "Stress also alters the acid concentration in the stomach, which can lead to peptic ulcers, stress ulcers or ulcerative colitis. Chronic stress can also lead to plaque buildup in the arteries (atherosclerosis), especially if combined with a high-fat diet and sedentary living. The correlation between stressful life events and psychiatric illness is stronger than the correlation between medical or physical illness".

In other words, chronic stress if untreated can cause a wide range of chronic diseases, including psychiatric illness.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of chronic stress, researchers examined the effect of Ashwagandha Root Extract on obese patients with long-term stress and anxiety.

The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial included a total of 52 subjects under chronic stress who received either Ashwagandha (300 mg) or a placebo twice daily.

According to the tested differentiation at the start and at 4 and 8 weeks, including the Perceived Stress Scale and Food Cravings Questionnaire, the Ashwagandha treatment group showed a significant improvement in stress associated with poor eating behaviors, including feelings of disinhibited eating, binge eating, hunger, and more ineffective attempts to control eating.

Moreover, according to the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, the Ashwagandha treatment group is more satisfied including body weight, and happier than the control.

No adverse effects had been reported by participants.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The outcome of this study suggests that Ashwagandha root extract can be used for bodyweight management in adults under chronic stress".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phenolic Compounds Found in Mixture of #Blackberry, #Fig and #Artichoke Inhibit #FreeRadicals and #LiverToxins, AQccording to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host, leading to lipid and protein damage and alternation of cell DNA.
Oxidative stress has been found to initiate the onset of chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancers.

Free radicals are unstable atoms with an unpaired electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order for them to become stable, free radicals are ready to steal or donate an electron from or to other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

The overexpression of free radicals is bad. However, free radicals generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of energy and essential molecules and boosting the immune system.

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation.

In a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes by the body are more than enough to accounter the expression of free radicals that bombard our body every day.

However, in less healthy people, the intake of dietary antioxidants such as supplements or fruits rich in antioxidants may be the only option to improve levels of antioxidants in the body.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated artichoke antioxidant activity, compared to those of Ficus carica, and Morus nigra and their herbal mixture (CFM) in vitro, using CCl4-induced damage in HepG2 cells.

CFM at 1 mg/ml showed a 47.00% and 37.09% decline of aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase, the oxidative stress markers, and an increase of the glutathione and superoxide dismutase 77.32% and 101.02%, the antioxidants produced by the host, comparable to CCl4 treated cells.

The antioxidant activity of fig and artichoke was attributed to the existence of different phenolic metabolites that act synergistically.

Dr. Youssef FS, the lead scientist said, "A herbal mixture composed of blackberry, artichoke, and fig could afford an excellent natural candidate to combat oxidative stress and counteract hepatic toxins owing to its phenolic compounds".

With an aim to reveal more information about the artichoke antioxidant effects, researchers launched a comprehensive evaluation of the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) leaf and tuber extract.

According to the results from the analysis, leaf extract exhibited a higher content of phenols and flavonoids compared to tuber extracts (5.07 and 7.14 fold higher, respectively).

The application of tuber extract at concentrations (25-500 μg·ml- 1) had a positive effect on fibroblast growth.

In the fibroblast cell line, tuber and leaf extracts increase the expression of the ROS SOD-1 inactivating enzyme gene associated with apoptotic signaling and cell death without affecting the levels of Nox-4 antioxidant activity.

Dr. Nizioł-Łukaszewska Z and colleagues, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Jerusalem artichoke leaves and tubers extracts affect the cell proliferation and can alter the expression of genes related to oxidative stress".

Taken together, artichoke may be considered a functional and herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with overexpression of reactive oxygen species (ROS), pending the confirmation of a larger sample and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Andrographis Inhibits Gene Expressions and Pathways Associated with the Onset of Non Small Cell #LungCancer Whole Herb Medicine

Kyle J. Norton

Andrographis may be used as a possible therapeutic herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of Lung cancer, a Taiwan study suggested.

Andrographis paniculata also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, and upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. Most common forms of primary lung cancers are derived from epithelial cells. In the US, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths of 158,683 people, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to 2007 statistics.

According to the National Chung Hsing University, andrographolide, one of the major diterpene lactones found in Andrographis paniculata exhibited anti-pulmonary cancer effects in a lung tumor mouse.

Dr. Tung YT, the lead author of the study said, "Andrographolide treatment on the overexpression of VEGF can arrest the cell cycle, which induced pulmonary tumors in transgenic mice".

In non-small-cell lung cancer, intake of andrographolide significantly enhanced the function of HLJ1, a novel tumor suppressor in used as a druggable target for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Furthermore, andrographolide also affected the gene expression involved in the cell cycle, apoptosis, and adhesion-related biological signaling, leading to inhibition of the development and progression of non-small cell lung cancer.

Another study insisted that the inhibition of andrographolide on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cell migration and invasion is also attributed to other mechanisms besides gene expression, such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway in regulating the cell cycle, VEGF pathway in regulating of tumor angiogenesis,, etc.

There is no doubt that andrographolide may be a promising new anticancer agent used in suppressing tumor growth and invasion in NSCLC, but more studies are necessary to confirm the validation.

#An Aqueous #Extract of Fruits of #Herbal #Ashwagandha Exerts a Significant Hypolipidemic Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol produced by the liver plays an essential role in moderate amount in orchestrating the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D, building strong cell walls, and aiding the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.
Hyperlipidemia or high blood cholesterol is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood.

Blood cholesterol can be classified into
* The high-density lipoprotein also known as good cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in moderate amounts.

In a healthy individual, unused cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can cause bad cholesterol to remain in the bloodstream, leading to hyperlipidemia.

The healthy ratio of total blood cholesterol ("bad"/ "good") is any number that is less than 4.

Patients with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. However, over time hyperlipidemia can cause plaque to accumulate on the arterial wall, leading to atherosclerosis, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL in the US.

Some researchers suggested that the hyperlipidemic prevalence in the Western world may correlate to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Karam I, the lead scientist in examing said, "Hyperlipidemia, a group of metabolic disorders characterized by the elevated levels of lipids, is a major modifiable risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease [5]. These lipids include cholesterol, cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides. Increased levels of LDL are related to the development of atherosclerosis [15,16].

And, "The result showed that there was a significant increase in hyperlipidemia biomarkers which includes TC, TG, LDL, and HDL. There were histological changes in organs which confirm the previous result of blood lipid. That mean a high-fat diet successfully induces hyperlipidemia in rats, to make a disease model of hyperlipidemia.".

The life-long condition of hyperlipidemia is treatable. By a change of diet and daily moderate exercise, you may control the condition without medication.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of heart disease, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha on lowering blood cholesterol.

The study included rats induced by a high-fat diet treated with an aqueous extract of fruits of Withania coagulans for 7 weeks.

According to the tested analysis during the experiment, administration of the extract showed a significantly reduced elevated serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoprotein levels.

In triton-induced hypercholesterolemia., the aqueous extract of fruits of Withania coagulans exerted a significant hypolipidemic activity.

Furthermore, according to the tested analysis on the liver tissues of treated hyperlipidemic rats, the extracts also inhibited the degenerative changes, compared to hyperlipidemic controls.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The hypolipidemic effect of W. coagulans fruits was found to be comparable to that of an Ayurvedic product containing Commiphora Mukul".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for lowering blood cholesterol, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
