#Healthyfood Cruciferous Vegetables Intakes are Linearly Associated with the Risk of #Atherosclerosis, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease is a group of conditions triggered by the abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels.
The 3 most common forms of cardiovascular disease in North America are coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and carotid artery disease caused by plaque build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, the arms and legs, and the brain.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulating on the wall of the arteries, leading to the narrowing of the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Atherosclerosis is a slow, progressive disease that may begin as early as childhood, caused by damage to the inner lining of the artery. However, the actual causes of the condition are debatable.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is made of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis, including 13.8% among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, the coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.

Risk factors of atherosclerosis include high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese, an unhealthy diet, a family history of heart disease, and physical inactivity, particularly smoking.

Some researchers suggested that since cholesterol makes up a big part of plaque, an unhealthy diet with high saturated trans fat, red meat, and processed meat may be the major cause of atherosclerosis.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

In finding a potential remedy for the prevention of plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, researchers the effect of vegetable intake alone, and its relationships to specific types of vegetables containing different phytochemical profiles on atherosclerosis.

According to the food questionnaire returned by the participants, using the total vegetable intake calculated at baseline (1998),
* Women consuming ≥3 servings of vegetables each day had ≈4.6% to 5.0% lower mean common carotid artery IMT (CCA-IMT, P=0.014) and maximum CCA-IMT (P=0.004) compared with participants consuming <2 servings of vegetables.

* Furthermore, for each 10 g/d higher in cruciferous vegetable intake, there was an associated 0.006 mm (0.8%) lower mean CCA-IMT (P<0.01) and 0.007 mm (0.8%) lower maximum CCA-IMT (P<0.01).

* Some vegetable types showed no association with CCA-IMT (P>0.05).

* Interestingly, there were no associations observed between vegetables and plaque severity (P>0.05).

Based on the results, researchers said, "Increasing vegetables in the diet with a focus on consuming cruciferous vegetables may have benefits for the prevention of subclinical atherosclerosis in older adult women".

Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of atherosclerosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Carrots Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Onset of Neuro-degenerative Disorders, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reducing risk, progression, and treatment of neurodegenerative disorder, some scientists suggested.
Neurodegeneration is the progressive loss of neurons including the death of neurons, characterized by structure loss-induced reduction of brain function.

The exact causes of neurodegenerative disorders are unknown. Researchers also do not why people with the same health conditions, are susceptible to certain neurodegenerative disorders such as
Huntington's disease. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig's disease, Parkinson's disease, or other forms of dementia, while others do not.

However, some researchers suggested that genetic mutation inherited from parents, certain illnesses and traumatic injury to the brain are some of the major causes of the onset of the disease.

According to Dr. Chaudhuri K, in the study of unhealthy diet and lifestyle on risk of neurodegenerative disorders, the onset of some neurodegenerative disorders was attributed to the unwholesome diet that disturbed mental health in initiating etiopathogenesis of senile dementia.

Further differentiation showed that psychological syndromes such as disturbed sleep, anxiety, tension, depression, difficulty in concentration, and memory, and the tendency to indulge in defective dietary habits, Kapha vitiating diets, and lifestyle are some predominant risk factors associated with the development of the disease.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

In the evaluation, the neurodegenerative disorder such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases affecting the central nervous system with debilitating effects on the patient, researchers at the University Technology of Mauritius launched a study to test the efficacy of flavonoids, found in many vegetables including carrots.

Flavonoids are phytochemicals containing a number of the member, including curcumin, lycopene, ginsenoside, vitexin, and baicalin with a proven record of anti-cancer and antioxidant and immunomodulation properties in a number of studies.

At the results of the analysis, researchers showed that the application of flavonoid to the brain ischemia patient also exerts potential neuroprotective effects by increasing neuronal viability, tissue perfusion, and cerebral blood flow and reducing ischemic-related apoptosis.

Moreover, patients treated with flavonoids also demonstrated a significantly anti-amyloidogenic effect and reduced the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the brain which has a strong implication in patients with Pakistan's disease.

After taking into account other co and confounders, researchers concluded that flavonoids found in a number of vegetables and fruits, including carrots, may be served as a potential therapeutic agent in brain disorders.

Further differentiation of the oxidative stress which causes neurodegenerative disorder, including oxidative damage to neurons in the induction of mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis, scientists at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region conducted an experiment to test the effect of lycopene, a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon with the highest antioxidant capacity compared to the other carotenoids against the expression of the diseases.

In rat model was randomly divided into 5 groups: the sham group, the spinal cord injury (SCI) group, and 3 SCI groups pre-treated with lycopene (5, 10, or 20mg/kg) researchers found that

* Spinal cord injury (SCI) group without treatment group displays a significant increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and a decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels, compared to other groups.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) the final form of polyunsaturated fatty acids peroxidation is considered as a natural marker for oxidative stress.

* Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) are natural antioxidants that are produced in the host body tissue with an aim to maintain the balance of the ratio of reactive oxygen species and antioxidants in the body.

The expression of lower levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) is a strong indication of overabundant free radicals, compared to levels of antioxidants in the body.

* Group treated with lycopene regardless to concentration exerted an overwhelming effect in blocking the change of mRNA of the mitochondrial membrane caused by spinal cord injury (SCI), including cytochrome b and mitochondrial transcription factor A (Tfam), with functions in the induction of mitochondrial dysfunction.

Cytochrome b, a protein in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells functioned as a part of the electron transport chain which was oxidated in this case.

Mitochondrial transcription factor A (mtTFA or Tfam), is a protein with functions as a key regulator of mammalian mitochondrial (mt) DNA transcription and replication which was altered caused by the presence of MDA.

Further analysis also found that the application of lycopene also reduces the risk of neuron cell apoptosis through decreased levels of pro-inflammatory and increased levels of anti-inflammatory expression in the tested rats.

These results suggested that lycopene found in vegetables including carrots significantly ameliorated oxidative damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell apoptosis via some parameters indicated above.

Dr. Hu W, the lead author said in the classification of doses application said, " lycopene significantly ameliorated the hind limb motor disturbances in the SCI+lyco10 group and the SCI+lyco20 group compared with the SCI group".

Taken together, carrots with a high amount of bioactive flavonoids, particularly lycopene may be considered a functional food in reducing the risk and treatment of various forms of the neurodegenerative disorder, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

#Healthyfood Tomatoes inhibit the Onset of NAFLD and #LiverCancer in Vivo

Kyle J. Norton

Liver cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the liver tissues due to the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of primary liver cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the liver.

Patients in the early stage of liver cancer, due to the small size of the tumor, are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced, after colonizing the deeper layers of the liver, the malignant cells may travel a distance away to infect other nearby tissues, leading to secondary metastasis.

The liver is the largest internal organ with a function that filters out blood coming from the digestive tract before passing them to other parts of the body.

Furthermore, the liver also produces cholesterol that not only aids the gastrointestinal tract in digesting food and absorbing nutrients but also helps to build a strong cell wall, and produce vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Also, at the advanced stage, patients with liver cancer may experience upper abdominal pain, abdominal swelling jaundice, and white, chalky stools accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 42,030 new cases (29,480 in men and 12,550 in women) will be diagnosed in the US.
Liver cancer will also cause the death of about 31,780 Americans (21,600 men and 10,180 women) in 2019.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of liver cancer, some researchers suggested that the rise of obesity-induced non-alcoholic liver disease may be a leading cause of liver cancer among Americans.

Dr. György Baffy wrote, "NAFLD is rapidly becoming the most common liver condition, it has been implicated in the worrisome trend of rising HCC incidence in a number of countries, which may offset successful measures in reducing the effect of virus-related liver cancer".

And, "Independently or in synergy with cirrhosis, NAFLD may provide a special oncogenic microenvironment through its pathogenic association with chronic nutrient excess and adipose tissue remodeling, characterized by pro-inflammatory adipokine profiles, lipotoxicity, altered hepatocellular bioenergetics, and insulin resistance".

In other words, if you are obese with NAFLD, you are at an increased risk of liver cancer.

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the effect of lycopene from tomatoes against NAFLD and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

The study included tobacco carcinogen 4-(N-methyl-N-nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) induces lesions in both lungs and livers of ferrets with or without lycopene intervention.

More precisely, selected male ferrets (6 groups, n = 8-10) were treated either with NNK (50 mg/kg BW, i.p., once a month for four consecutive months) or saline with or without dietary lycopene supplementation (2.2 and 6.6 mg/kg BW/day, respectively) for 26 weeks.

Before the treatment of lycopene, the NNK group showed a higher incidence of lung tumors, HCC, and steatohepatitis and elevations in bilirubin and AST levels.

Administration of lycopene supplementation at two doses not only prevented NNK-induced expressions of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in the lung associated with liver injury and cells damage but also reduced the expression of a protein associated pro-inflammation, particularly, in the level of CYP2E1 involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics in the body in the liver

Furthermore, lycopene also attenuated the NNK-induced mortality and pathological lesions in the liver of ferrets.

Based on the results, researchers said, "The present study provided strong experimental evidence that the tobacco carcinogen NNK can induce both HCC and steatohepatitis in the ferrets and can be a useful model for studying tobacco carcinogen-associated NAFLD and liver cancer".

Moreover, in the examined the natural whole foods which process anti-liver cancer potential, Dr. Zhou Y, the lead scientist wrote, "..., tomatoes,... These dietary natural products and their active components could affect the development and progression of liver cancer in various ways, such as inhibiting tumor cell growth and metastasis, protecting against liver carcinogens, immunomodulating and enhancing effects of chemotherapeutic drugs".

Taken together, tomatoes processed with abundantly bioactive compound lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bilberry Inhibits Symptoms of #Asthenopia, According to Studies, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of asthenopia (eye strain), according to studies.
Asthenopia is a condition characterized by nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, pain in or around the eyes, blurred vision, headache, and occasional double vision.

Symptoms occur mostly in people who have spent a long time in the visual task focusing, such as prolonged reading on the screen or newspaper.

Some researchers suggested by giving the eye some rest such as looking on a distant object at least once an hour can be helpful in alleviating the problem.

Mechanically, eye muscle imbalance or uncorrected vision can also cause asthenopia.

Symptoms of asthenopia include sore or irritated eyes dry or watery eyes, blurred or double vision, and increased sensitivity to light.

Some people may also experience symptoms of trouble focusing and pain in the neck, shoulder, and neck.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, you may have asthenopia, please check with your doctor for preventive measures.

Some researchers suggested that asthenopia may also be a symptom in people with chronic headaches.

Dr. Vincent AJ, the lead scientist in the investigation of a chronic headache asthenopia wrote, "Sensitivity to light in the absence of a headache was reported by 27.8% of controls and 44.7% of headache sufferers (p less than 0.05)" and "The latter figure increased to 71.3% when a headache was actually present (p less than 0.001)".

These results indicated a strong correlation between a chronic headache and asthenopia.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers with the aim of finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of asthenopia examined the effects of dietary supplementation with a combination of fish oil, bilberry extract, and lutein on subjective symptoms of asthenopia in humans.

A double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, and placebo-controlled trial was conducted by the Human Life Science R&D Center,
* In the Active group, eleven subjects were given a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acid-rich fish oil (docosahexaenoic acid 783 mg/day, eicosapentaenoic acid 162 mg/day), bilberry extract (anthocyanidin 59 mg/day), and lutein (17.5 mg/day) in soft gel capsule form, every day for 4 weeks.

* In the Placebo group, nine subjects received placebo capsules.

According to the questionnaires taken before and after the experiment, researchers found that
* Asthenopia symptoms such as "stiff shoulder, low back pain", "frustration", "dry-eye", and "stuffy head" were improved in the Active group compared to the placebo.

* Subjected who received the supplement also demonstrated a significant improvement od mental symptoms such as fatigue after 4 weeks.

According to the return questionnaires, no side effects were reported in the active group at the 2 and 4 weeks of supplemental injection.

The results strongly supported the use of dietary supplementation with the combination of omega-3 fatty acid-rich fish oil, bilberry extract, and lutein for treating asthenopia.

Taken together, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a natural remedy for the treatment of dry eye with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Processes Renal Protective Activity by Inhibiting Toxicity in Vitro

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer, a class of diseases refers to a group of cells that grow and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably in a specific tissue of an organ.

Over time, after successfully penetrating the deeper layers of the organs, most cancer can travel a distance away to damage other healthy tissues via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine, and formed part of the detoxified organs to filter out blood by removing wastes and extra water to make urine.

Kidney cancer is a medical condition associated with cell growth irregularly that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the kidney tissue, before spreading to the deeper layers to form a tumor through unlimited cell cycle division.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women in the US. In 2019, approximately, 73,820 new cases of kidney cancer will be diagnosed including 44,120 in men and 29,700 in women. The disease also causes the death of 14,770 Americans, including 9,820 men and 4,950 women in the same year.

The causes of kidney cancer are unknown. However, epidemiologically, the increase in age, gender, smoking, obesity, family diabetes, long-term exposure to chemical toxins, and use of diuretic and nondiuretic anti-hypertensive medication are some prevalent factors found in patients with kidney cancer.

Some researchers suggested the increased incidence of kidney cancer in the US may correlate to obesity caused by the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades.

Dr. Wilson KM, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the Chan School of Public Health wrote, "Obesity has been largely measured as body mass index (BMI). Studies which evaluated other measures of obesity including waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), as well as an increase in weight, have reported similar positive associations with RCC".

And " Although the mechanisms by which obesity influences renal carcinogenesis have been under-explored, insulin resistance and certain growth factors including insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), sex steroid hormones, and biochemical markers such as adiponectin may be involved".

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound that processes renal protective activity, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A, a major chemical constituent of Withania somnifera, in the renal cancer cell line.

According to tested analysis, withaferin A application resulted in apoptotic cell death in several types of human renal cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, withaferin A inhibited the Caki cells by inducing signature endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers, leading to the accumulation of unfolded proteins associated with cancer cell death.

Moreover, CAAT/enhancer-binding protein-homologous protein (CHOP) associated with pro-apoptotic function in the integrated stress response was elevated by the injection of withaferin A.

Interestingly, withaferin A-induced ER stress causes cytotoxicity against renal cancer cells by increasing levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the present study provides strong evidence supporting an important role of the ER stress response in mediating withaferin A-induced apoptosis".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of renal cancer, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Arnica Gel Preparations Alleviate Symptoms and Treatment of #Osteoarthritis Compared to that of Ibuprofen, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Some scientists suggested that Arnica may have a substantial and positive effect on reduced risk and treatment of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a chronic condition characterized by wear and tear on a joint due to aging, affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.

The University of Porto Medical School suggested that one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in the knee, hip, and hand joints(3).

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints.

The pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.

Today management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments.

An unhealthy diet that cause nutrient deficiency and overload, damage of cartilage, a joint injury that did not heal properly, overuse, and autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis also have potential effects on the increased prevalence of osteoarthritis.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is repairing the damage to the skin, tissues, organs, etc.

In a randomized, double-blind study of 204 patients to investigate the effect of ibuprofen (5%) and Arnica (50 g tincture/100 g, DER 1:20), as gel preparations in patients with radiologically confirmed and symptomatically active osteoarthritis of interphalangeal joints of hands, researchers found that after 21 days of treatment, group treated with Arnica exerted a significant effect in relieve and function of the joints of hands similar to group treated with the conventional medicine.
4.8% in the Arnica group reported some tolerant adverse effects compared to 6.1% in the group treated with ibuprofen.

After taking into account other co and con factors, Dr. the lead researcher said, "Our results confirm that this preparation of Arnica is not inferior to ibuprofen when treating osteoarthritis of the hands".

In other to confirm the effect of Arnica as a form of functional food for the treatment of osteoarthritis, scientists at the Valens Clinic for Rheumatism conducted a study of topical application of Arnica montana fresh plant gel twice daily, in 26 men and 53 women with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.

According to the study, treatment after 3 and 6 weeks demonstrated a strong improvement of the median total scores on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), used by health professionals with a proprietary set of standardized questionnaires to evaluate the condition of patients with osteoarthritis, including knee and hip, including pain, stiffness, and physical functioning of the joints.

Furthermore, in regard to the symptoms expression of osteoarthritis, the application of the herbal preparation exerted a significant reduction of pain, and stiffness, observed by the pain and stiffness score.

A score of the mean of function subscales also showed significant reductions at these time points.

The physical function subscale found in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) is considered more consistent with stronger test-retest reliability compared to the pain score with some inconsistencies across the studies.

However, local tolerant adverse effects were reported in 7.6 % of patients who attended the study with one patient with an allergic reaction.

Interestingly, at the end of the study, 87% rated the tolerability of the gel as "good" or "fairly good," and 76% would use it again.

These results indicated that topical application of Arnica montana gel for 6 weeks alleviated symptoms of osteoarthritis in all aspects and may be considered as a well-tolerated, and effective treatment of mild to moderate OA of the knee.

Taken together, as a topical herbal medicine, Arnica may be considered a functional food for attenuated symptoms and treatment of osteoarthritis.
