#Arnica Gel Preparations Alleviate Symptoms and Treatment of #Osteoarthritis Compared to that of Ibuprofen, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Some scientists suggested that Arnica may have a substantial and positive effect on reduced risk and treatment of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a chronic condition characterized by wear and tear on a joint due to aging, affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.

The University of Porto Medical School suggested that one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in the knee, hip, and hand joints(3).

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints.

The pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.

Today management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments.

An unhealthy diet that cause nutrient deficiency and overload, damage of cartilage, a joint injury that did not heal properly, overuse, and autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis also have potential effects on the increased prevalence of osteoarthritis.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is repairing the damage to the skin, tissues, organs, etc.

In a randomized, double-blind study of 204 patients to investigate the effect of ibuprofen (5%) and Arnica (50 g tincture/100 g, DER 1:20), as gel preparations in patients with radiologically confirmed and symptomatically active osteoarthritis of interphalangeal joints of hands, researchers found that after 21 days of treatment, group treated with Arnica exerted a significant effect in relieve and function of the joints of hands similar to group treated with the conventional medicine.
4.8% in the Arnica group reported some tolerant adverse effects compared to 6.1% in the group treated with ibuprofen.

After taking into account other co and con factors, Dr. the lead researcher said, "Our results confirm that this preparation of Arnica is not inferior to ibuprofen when treating osteoarthritis of the hands".

In other to confirm the effect of Arnica as a form of functional food for the treatment of osteoarthritis, scientists at the Valens Clinic for Rheumatism conducted a study of topical application of Arnica montana fresh plant gel twice daily, in 26 men and 53 women with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.

According to the study, treatment after 3 and 6 weeks demonstrated a strong improvement of the median total scores on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), used by health professionals with a proprietary set of standardized questionnaires to evaluate the condition of patients with osteoarthritis, including knee and hip, including pain, stiffness, and physical functioning of the joints.

Furthermore, in regard to the symptoms expression of osteoarthritis, the application of the herbal preparation exerted a significant reduction of pain, and stiffness, observed by the pain and stiffness score.

A score of the mean of function subscales also showed significant reductions at these time points.

The physical function subscale found in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) is considered more consistent with stronger test-retest reliability compared to the pain score with some inconsistencies across the studies.

However, local tolerant adverse effects were reported in 7.6 % of patients who attended the study with one patient with an allergic reaction.

Interestingly, at the end of the study, 87% rated the tolerability of the gel as "good" or "fairly good," and 76% would use it again.

These results indicated that topical application of Arnica montana gel for 6 weeks alleviated symptoms of osteoarthritis in all aspects and may be considered as a well-tolerated, and effective treatment of mild to moderate OA of the knee.

Taken together, as a topical herbal medicine, Arnica may be considered a functional food for attenuated symptoms and treatment of osteoarthritis.

#GreenBeans Intake Daily and Regularly Reduce the Risk of CardiovascularDisease and Induce Weighloss in Obesity

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, and over 650 million were obese worldwide.

The most common causes of obesity are associated with an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, processed foods and red meat, and physical inactivity.

The WHO in the explanation of the causes of obesity wrote, "Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing, and education".

Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition, and use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of being overweight and obesity.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015, compared to women.

Believe it or not, more than 63),000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

On another hand, stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell death in the affected region.

Dr. Luma Akil, the lead scientist in the investigation of the risk of CVD in obese wrote, "Obesity is among the leading causes of elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity. In the present study, the associations between the increase in body mass index (BMI) and the increasing rates of CVD and high blood pressure (HBP)".

And, " Data from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were obtained and analyzed for obesity rates, percent of myocardial infarction, stroke, and HBP from 2005–2009".

In other words, if you are obese, your risk of CVD is substantially higher compared to non-obese individuals

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belongs to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

In finding a potent whole food that processes anti-obesity activity, researchers examined the effect of edible dry bean consumption (Phaseolus vulgaris L. including green beans) modulating diet-induced obesity in rats and mice.

Sprague-Dawley rats and a diet-induced obesity model in C57Bl/6 mice included in the vivo suggested, cooked dry beans showed a positive modulation of plasma lipids and hepatic proteins that involves in lipid biosynthesis.

In both animal species, short-term feeding of a bean-containing diet demonstrated a reduced plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol without affecting HDL-cholesterol or total TAG associated with the target of cholesterol catabolism and excretion.

More importantly, bean-fed obese mice displayed a significant weight loss within a 12 d time frame.

In other words, dry beans injection in a short-term of 7-14 days) not only had a strong effect on weight regulatory effects but also exerted a cardioprotective against CVD-obese mice.

Taken altogether, green beans or other dried beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Regulates the Levels of #Homocysteine and #Adiponectin Levels Against Complications Induced by #MetabolicSyndrome and Type2 #Diabetes

Kyle J. Norton

Homocysteine produced in the bloodstream is a common amino acid in the blood from eating meat.
High levels of homocysteine in the blood have been found to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

In other words, homocysteine-induced atherosclerosis by causing arterial damage, leading to the accumulation and formation of plaque and blood clots.

Believe it or not, overexpression of homocysteine accompanied by the low levels of vitamins B6, B12, and folate, also have been found in some patients with renal disease.

Dr. Bradley A. Maron, the lead scientist in the examination of the disease associated with hyperhomocysteinemia wrote, "The unique biochemical profile of homocysteine is characterized by chemical reactivity supporting a wide range of molecular effects, and a tendency to promote oxidant stress-induced cellular toxicity".

And, "Numerous epidemiological reports have established hyperhomocysteinemia as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, dementia-type disorders, and osteoporosis-associated fractures".

Adiponectin is a type of protein associated with the function that regulates glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown.

The protein also plays a critical role in the development of insulin resistance and atherosclerosis. Low levels of adiponectin levels increase the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

In type 2 diabetes, administration of adiponectin not lowers plasma glucose levels but also increases insulin sensitivity.

More precisely, in patients with type 2 diabetes, increased levels of adiponectin involved in the enhancement of insulin sensitivity were attributed to the increase of fatty acid oxidation and inhibition of hepatic glucose production.

Dr. Lihn AS in examing the effects of administration of adiponectin in type 2 diabetes wrote, "adiponectin in addition to possible anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic effects appears to be an insulin enhancer, with potential as a new pharmacologic treatment modality of the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the inhibition of cardiovascular risk factors, researchers examined the effects of cranberry juice concomitantly on homocysteine and adiponectin levels in patients with the MetS.

The study included a total of 36 individuals with the MetS divided into two groups: the control group (n 36) and the cranberry-treated group(n 20) received cranberry juice (0·7 liters/d) containing 0·4mg folic acid for 60 days.

According to tested analysis, the cranberry-treated group showed an increase in adiponectin involved in regulating glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown and a decrease in homocysteine associated with a risk for heart disease compared to baseline values and the controls.

However, the cranberry-treated group improved MetS without affecting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-a, IL-1, and IL-6.

According to the measurement of oxidative stress, the cranberry-treated group also showed decreased lipoperoxidation and protein oxidation levels, compared to the control group.

The results strongly suggested that chronic consumption of cranberry juice for 60 d improves some cardiovascular risk factors.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded. "The present data reinforce the importance of the inverse association between homocysteine and adiponectin and the need for more specifically designed studies on MetS patients.".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of MetS, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot Protects Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Against the Risk of Colitis by Inhibiting the Production of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines

Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.
The disease can be caused by infection, such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis(CD)), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most cases of colitis are involved the damage of the intestinal mucosal barrier, particularly to those of ulcerative colitis.

Epidemiologically, damage and a reduction of gut bacteria by dietary chemicals, such as antibiotics of the protective mucus layer and the underlying tissue by the poorly inactivated digestive proteases induced both UC and CD.

The intestinal mucosal barrier is the outermost inner layer of the lining of the intestines which plays an essential role to ensure the adequate containment of undesirable luminal contents within the intestine and preserves the ability to absorb nutrients.

Additionally, the intestinal mucosal barrier also processes various immunological mediators, including cytokines and chemokines stimulated by gut microbiota and host immune responses, thus maintaining a well-balanced relationship between gut microbes and the host immune system.

In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier protects the colonic integrity by interacting with the gut microbiota and the immune response to prevent the inflammation of the colon that causes the onset of colitis.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), researchers examined the anti-colitis effect of Tussilagone (TSL), a major component of Tussilago farfara.

In mice subjected to acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), Tussilago showed a significant protective effect by ameliorating weight loss, and colonic inflammatory damage.

Proteins associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 and the activity of myeloperoxidase in colonic tissues were inhibited by tussilagone-treated mice.

Furthermore, tussilagone treatment reduced the numbers of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in the induction of cytokines and increased the numbers of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) involved the production of antioxidant enzymes in nuclei of colonic tissues.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " tussilagone treatment attenuated DSS-induced colitis in mice through inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and inducing Nrf2 pathways, indicating that tussilagone is a potent therapeutic candidate for the treatment of intestinal ".

Taken together, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of colitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Broccoli's Indole-3-Carbinol Inhibits Proteins Associated with an Increased Risk of #ProstateCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Tumor suppressor proteins are types of genetic materials that protect the body against cell proliferation by regulating the activity of a variety of cellular genes involved in growth and cell cycle progression.
In other words, tumor-suppressor genes encode proteins that slow or inhibit progression through a range of mechanisms to protect the cell integrity against mutation including inhibiting proliferation, programming cell death, and involving cell cycle arrest.

Proteins found in the cells of organisms are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in maintaining the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs.

Proteins are made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units called amino acids, attaching one to another in long chains.

The most common types of tumor-suppressor proteins are
* The retinoblastoma protein (Rb) is a tumor suppressor protein that has been found to induce dysfunction in several major cancers by preventing excessive cell growth and inhibiting the cell cycle.

* p53 is also a tumor suppressor protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of cell division through its anti-proliferative activity.

In many cancer, the loss or inactivation of the tumor suppressor genes has been shown to contribute to the abnormal proliferation of tumor cells.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

In finding a potential whole for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C), a dietary compound found naturally in cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli and brussels sprouts on cell arrest of human reproductive cancer cells.

According to the I3C treatment on the tested cancer cell line, the bioactive compound increased both the transcripts and protein levels of the CDK2 inhibitor p21 associated with a tumor-suppressive gene linking to DNA damage cell cycle arrest through tumor protein p53, another tumor suppressor.

In other words, ablating p53 production prevented the I3C function to induce G1 arrest and p21 expression.

In cell division assays, the antiproliferative activity of I3C was attributed to p53 protein stability and greater transactivation of p21 potential.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " I3C induced G1 arrest of human prostate cancer cells requires the induced production of the activated phosphorylated forms of p53, which stimulate transcription of the CDK2 inhibitor p21".

Taken together, broccoli processed with a high amount of Indole-3-Carbinol may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of I3C in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #OnionExtract Exhibits Anti-Cancer Proliferative Effects Through Its Antioxidant Activity, Reserachers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Proliferation is a process of cancer growth associated with an abnormally high rate of cancer cell division, leading to rapid overgrowth of the tumor.

Cancer is a class of medical conditions caused by irregular cell growth that starts in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue in a specific organ.

Most cancers that grow in size through proliferation can be invasive. In other words, after passing the stages of colonizing the entire tissues of the organ, invasive cancer cells can travel a distance away from the primary site infecting other healthy tissue and organ via blood and fluid circulation, leading to secondary metastasis.

Cancer cell proliferation by dividing unlimitedly, compared to normal cells that die after a certain cell cycle division.

More precisely,
* The growth of normal cells
Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process without even notice, every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.
Sometimes, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cuts, injuries, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal rate again due to our body growth inhibitors. Unfortunately, skin cells sometimes overgrow while healing, leading to scars on the skin.

*The primary tumor; size and growth
A primary tumor or original tumor that the tumor progression that yields a cancerous mass. Some cancers can begin in several places, such as lymphomas and leukemias. Most cancers can not be detected until they formed a small grape-like lump. Cancer cells need 42 doublings before they can produce enough cancer cells to cause death.

According to the statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, In 2018, approximately 1,735,350 cases of cancer were diagnosed in the US and the disease also caused the death of 609,640 Americans.

Epidemiologically, the odds of cancer incidence is 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year based on 2011–2015 statistics.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of ethyl acetate extract of onion (EEO) had potent inhibitory effects on the FAS gene involved in the over-expressing human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells.

According to the tested analysis, EEO exhibited MDA-MB-231 cells. apoptosis through the inhibition of FAS, the apoptosis antigen.

Furthermore, according to the differentiation of 3T3-L1 adipocytes used in vitro model of white adipocytes, EEO also suppressed the lipid accumulation via inhibition of FAS, a condition found in obese patients.

These results strongly suggested that EEO not only prevents the risk of breast cancer in obese but also has a strong impact on the reduced risk of other types of cancer associated with the FAS gene.

Dr. Wang Y, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Since obesity is closely related to breast cancer and obese patients are at elevated risk of developing various cancers, these findings suggested that onion might be useful for preventing obesity-related malignancy".

Additionally, in the examination of the anticancer effects on five onion varieties grown in Ontario against human adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences suggested
* Onion extracts and pure extracts of flavonoids exhibit antiproliferative effects against the tested cancer cell through its major phytochemical quercetin, myricetin, and kaempferol.

* Onion varieties also exhibited antiproliferative activity similar to purified flavonoids, according to the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays.

* The Safrane extracts showed the weakest antiproliferative activity compared to other variety.

Taken together, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer via antiproliferative activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
