#Herbal Bilberry's #Anthocyanosides Enhances Retinal Sensitivity by Improving Visual Acuity and Dark Adaptation, and Blood Supply of the Retina, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Eye disease is a general term of conditions associated with the damage of the optic nerve and impaired vision, including disease of the cornea and macular degeneration.

People with eye disease in the early stage may not have any symptoms. However, depending on the severity and location that affects the vision, people with eye disease at the advanced stage may experience symptoms of acute eye pain, hazy, blurred, or double vision, seeing flashes of light, or sudden bright floating spots.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have eye disease. Please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Most common eye problems are minor and will go away on their own such as red-eye and eye strain. However, some eye problems may require medical attention such as vision change.

According to the statistics, the financial burden of vision loss and eye diseases, and vision disorders in the U.S. has taken a toll on healthcare costs. Approximately, $130 billion a year are spent to treat eye disease.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural source of the compound for the treatment of eye disease, particularly in the older population, researchers investigated the effects of bilberry anthocyanosides (Vaccinium myrtillus L.).

Bilberry anthocyanosides were found to promote rhodopsin, a biological pigment found in the rods of the retina synthesis and regeneration.

Moreover, the compounds increased retinal sensitivity to changes in light intensity and improved the visual acuity and dark adaptation, and blood supply of the retina.

The findings support the regular use of bilberry anthocyanosides as a dietary source against age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, primary open-angle glaucoma, and other diseases.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about bilberry bioactive compound properties, researchers evaluated the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) and anthocyanins on visual function in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) based on the vascular theory of mechanisms of glaucomatous optic nerve damage.

332 subjects data (209 men and 123 women) treated with anthocyanins (n=132), GBE (n=103), or no medication (control, n=97) were reviewed.

According to the tested assays, the mean anthocyanin treatment duration was 24.32±10.43 (range, 6-53) months, and the mean GBE treatment duration was 23.81±10.36 months (range, 6-59) months.

After anthocyanin treatment, the mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for all eyes improved from 0.16 logMAR units, and Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) mean deviation improved from -6.44.

Dr. Shim SH, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that anthocyanins and GBE may be helpful in improving visual function in some individuals with NTG".

Taken altogether, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases, pending the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GammaLinolenicAcid #GLA Processes Anti-Atherosclerotic Lesions by Modulating a Profile of Eicosanoid Production in Vivo

Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulating on the wall of the arteries, leading to the narrowing of the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.
Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is the made of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

Atherosclerosis is a slow, progressive disease that may begin as early as childhood, caused by damage to the inner lining of the artery. However, the actual causes of the condition are debatable.

Some researchers suggested that atherosclerosis may be caused by long-term high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, and triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood. Particularly, in high levels of insulin in the blood from diabetes and in exposure to chemicals from smoking tobacco.

Patients with early stages of atherosclerosis may not experience any symptoms. However, as the disease progress, patients may have the symptoms of chest pain if the blockage occurs in an artery of the heart (coronary artery) and leg cramps during exercise or walking if the blockage occurs in the legs.

According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis. 13.8% prevalence is among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, the coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.

Risk factors of atherosclerosis include high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese, an unhealthy diet, a family history of heart disease, and physical inactivity, particularly smoking.

Some researchers suggested that since cholesterol makes up a big part of the plaque, an unhealthy diet with high saturated trans fat, red meat, and processed meat may be the major cause of atherosclerosis.

Gamma-linolenic acid is a phytochemical in the group of Omega-3, 6,9 fatty acids, belongings to the class of Lipids, found abundantly in evening primrose, borage, blackcurrant, etc.

In finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, researchers examined the effect of the effects of D5D inhibition by a D5D inhibitor on atherosclerosis.

Where Delta-5 desaturase (D5D), encoded by fatty acid desaturase 1 (Fads1), is the rate-limiting enzyme for the conversion from dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) to arachidonic acid (AA) in the ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid pathway.

According to the results of the analysis of the Western-diet fed ApoE knockout (KO) mice,
* Oral administration of compound-326 (3-10 mg/kg per day for 15 weeks) significantly inhibited the progression of atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta without affecting plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

* Compound-326 significantly decreased AA levels, while it increased DGLA levels in the liver and the blood accompanied by decreases in AA-derived eicosanoid production and increases in DGLA-derived eicosanoid production from the blood cells.

In other words, compound-326 prevents the progression of atherosclerosis in Western-diet-fed ApoE KO mice by modulating a profile of eicosanoid production.

Collectively, researchers said, "D5D inhibitors can be a novel remedy for preventing atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular events".

Taken together, Gamma-linolenic Acid may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic lesions,, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical #Sinigrin Inhibits the Onset of #Atherosclerosis by Reducing Levels of the Proteins Associated with Lipid Metabolism in Vivo

Kyle J. Norton

Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis, according to studies.
Atherosclerosis is a chronic and medical condition characterized by the plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, leading to stiffing and hardening of arteries.

Arteries are the blood vessels that carry the oxygen-rich blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of heart disease and stroke, depending on the area of blocking in the arteries.

Plaque is a combination of cholesterol, calcium, cadmium, and other harmful chemical substances found in the blood.

The exact causes of atherosclerosis are not identified. Researchers as of today do not know why people with the same health condition, some are prone to the disease onset while others do not.

However, damage or injury of the inner layer of an artery, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and medical conditions such as arthritis, lupus or infections, or inflammation of unknown cause have been found to increase the risk of atherosclerosis.

Due to plaque accumulation associated with high blood cholesterol, some researchers suggested that
an unhealthy diet high in saturated fat and trans fat may be the major cause as well as increasing the severity of the condition.

Dt. Zhao Y said, "The WZSPs (n = 9) were fed a high-cholesterol and high-fat diet (HCFD). After continuous feeding, 3 WZSPs each were sacrificed at 6, 8, and 12 months, respectively, and the general clinical manifestations and serological indexes were detected".

And, " At 12 months, atherosclerotic lesions could be found in all major arteries, while lipid core, cholesterol precipitation, and calcium deposition appeared in the most serious sites".

The results clearly indicated the risk of atherosclerosis is substantially increased in animals fed with long-term high fat diet.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis with no side effects, researchers investigated sinigrin anti-plaque accumulation in an animal model.

In ApoE mice, the injection of sinigrin suppressed the expression of the genes directly involved in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions.

Sinigrin lowered the blood levels of cholesterol LDH, triglyceride, and cholesterol in serum without affecting the levels HDL. In other words, sinigrin promoted the return of blood cholesterol back to the liver, therefore, repressing the risk of cholesterol accompanied by other substances to form plaques on the arterial wall in facilitating the onset of atherosclerosis.

Furthermore, injection of sinigrin also promoted lipid homeostasis, through reducing levels of the proteins associated with lipid metabolism.

Moreover, the bioactive compound also reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines induced by the overexpression of free radicals, and the accumulation of modified LDL within the intima of the artery.through its antioxidant activity.

More precisely, the bioactive compound reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines by suppressing the activation of the signaling protein associated with a wide range of processes such as immunity, and inflammation.

In ApoE-/- mice-induced atherosclerosis, the application of sinigrin exerted a similar effect by reducing the levels of serum concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), calcium (Ca2+), and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Oral administration of sinigrin attenuated the expression of proteins involved in the initiation of atherosclerosis.

Taken together, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#BetaSitosterol Reduces Cholesterol Levels by Inhibiting the Impaired Intestinal Absorption of #ExogenousSterols in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques to build up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

In other words, healthy blood cholesterol is any level with either less than or equal to 4 (low-density lipoprotein/ 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

According to the statistics, in 2015-2016, by age and gender, a total of 12.4 percent of adults aged 20 years and over had high cholesterol in the United States.

The ideal blood cholesterol is less than 4 (levels of LDL)/ 1(levels of HDL).

Low-density lipoprotein is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help to digest fat. However, overexpression of LDL can induce plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, leading to atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular disease.

Low-density lipoprotein is produced by the liver or from dietary sources. High-density lipoprotein neutralizes the levels of LDL by returning them to the liver.

Some researchers suggested that Diet high in trans fats, saturated fat, sugar, smoking, medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure are associated with the increased risk of high blood cholesterol.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting mostly the lung in children and young adults, leading to difficulty breathing and coughing up mucus due to frequent lung infections.

However, the condition has also been found in the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine.
According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry, more than 30,000 people are living with cystic fibrosis in the US.

Believe it or not, most cases of CF are diagnosed by age 2.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with hyper cholesterol, researchers elucidated the β-sitosterol effects in the plasma of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF).

The study included the plasma of 26 patients with CF and 33 unaffected controls that are treated by β-sitosterol and campesterol, using gas chromatography (GC-FID and GC-MS) assays.

Before the administration of β-sitosterol, the plasma level of cholesterol is higher in patients with CF compared to control subjects.
* Furthermore, plasma cholesterol treated by β-sitosterol was significantly lower in CF patients, compared to control.

* Moreover, β-sitosterol prevents the impaired intestinal absorption of exogenous sterols in patients with CF that stimulates the endogenous synthesis of cholesterol, without affecting the total cholesterol in plasma.

In other words, cystic fibrosis induced transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) dysfunction reduces cholesterol blood excretion causing the accumulation of cholesterol in liver cells and in other tissues that CF chronic inflammation.

Taken together, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hyper cholesterol in patients with CF, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Omega3 Fatty Acids Inhibits the Onset of Crohn's disease (CD) by Regulating the Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammatory bowel disease is a condition characterized by long-term inflammation of the gut. The disease affects over 1.6 million Americans today.

The most common types of IBD are
*Crohn’s disease (CD) is an inflammation of any part of the digestive tract. Most cases of CD affect the tail end of the small intestine.

* Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine.

* Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease caused by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

The exact cause of Crohn's disease is not identified. However, some researchers suggested that people with a compromised immune system and genetic preposition are prone to the disease onset compared to people who do not

The most common symptoms of Crohn's disease are abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.

Risk factors of Crohn's disease include aging, family and person history, ethnicity, smoking and long-term use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.

Conventionally, most cases of CD are treated by anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and antibiotics.

According to the statistics by Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, the total number of new cases of Crohn's disease diagnosed each year was 10.7 per 100,000 people. In other words, approximately 33,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the omega-3 supplementation by oral capsule for patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

The study included a total of 6 patients with CD in remission who participated in this open-label clinical trial and received one bottle (100 ml) of the test formulation (IMARK S®) daily for 28 days. After a 1-month washout period, patients ingested two bottles of the formulation daily for another 28 days.

According to the results of the anthropometric and blood tests,* There were no side effects with the quantity of the injection.
* The application did not alter the body weight and body mass index of the participants.

* Most importantly, according to the CD activity index, participants showed a decrease in their scores after ingesting one bottle of the formulation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Supplementation with an omega-3 emulsifying formulation can be safe and useful for maintaining remission in patients with CD and warrants further studies".

Taken together, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Lycopene, Processes Anti-diabetic Nephropathy by Inhibiting Advanced Glycation End Products #AGEs, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease) is a complication of kidney damage in diabetes.
Long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia has been found to damage parts of the kidneys, leading to reduced kidney function in filter waste from the blood filters, resulting in a 'leaky' syndrome that allows protein into your urine.

Diabetic nephropathy is the 3 stages of kidney change in patients with diabetes. In this stage, patients may experience symptoms of abnormally elevated urinary albumin excretion, compared to the 15 and 300 μg/min in the baseline situation.

The progression of diabetic nephropathy that leads to an increased rate of albumin excretion is higher in patients with increased blood pressure.

The condition in the advanced stage can lead to symptoms of worsening blood pressure, protein in the urine, swelling of feet, ankles, hands or eyes, increased need to urinate, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and persistent itching.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of confusion or difficulty concentrating.

More importantly, if high blood pressure is left uncontrolled, diabetic nephropathy can induce persistent proteinuria >0.5 g/ 24 h that furtherly declines the renal function with the mean fall rate being around 1 ml/min/mo.

In other words, by treating hypertension and hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes, the progression of diabetics kidney disease may be slowed.

Some researchers suggested that by maintaining healthy blood glucose levels and keeping them within the target range and a change of healthful diet accompanied by moderate exercise, diabetic nephropathy can be control

Dr. Chijoke Onyenwenyi, "Kidney disease is common in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and is associated with adverse health outcomes, including progression to end-stage renal disease. In the general population, adherence to a healthy lifestyle is known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and death".

And, "Among individuals with diabetic kidney disease, modifications in lifestyle factors, including diet, physical activity, smoking habits, and body mass index, represent a promising cost-effective therapeutic adjunct to pharmacologic treatment of kidney disease incidence and progression".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potent compound for the treatment of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effects of lycopene, a carotenoid, on oxidative stress-induced progression of diabetic nephropathy.

According to the tested assays, lycopene inhibited the menace ad oxidative stress and stress markers associated with advanced glycation end products (AGEs) both in vitro and in vivo.

Furthermore, lycopene decelerated the ribose-induced AGE formation in the normal adult human kidney. (HK-2) cells and in rat kidneys thereby inhibiting the expression RAGE involved in the inflammatory response, leading to reduced levels of nuclear factor κB (NFκB) and matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP 2) expressions.

Where nuclear factor κB (NFκB) and matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP 2) expressions. are associated with cytokine production under oxidative stress.

Most importantly, nephropathy (DN) induced by the administration of ribose was totally inhibited by the injection of lycopene.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "lycopene provides protection against the development of diabetic nephropathy and ameliorates renal function by halting AGE-RAGE axis".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for protection against the risk of diabetic nephropathy in diabetics, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Broccoli's Sulforaphane (SF) Prosesses Anti Kidney Toxicity Induced by Chemo Drug, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found on the left and right side of the retroperitoneal space in the body.
The function of the kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Chemotherapy is a drug treatment that kills cancer cells by inducing cytotoxicity. Most cases of chemotherapy have been found to cause severe side effects on the patient, including fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, bowel issues such as constipation or diarrhea, hair loss, mouth sores, and skin and nail problems.

Chemo drugs have also been shown to induce nephrotoxicity, by increasing the production of ROS and inhibiting several antioxidant enzymes to orchestrate kidney oxidative stress injury.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-kidney toxicity induced by chemo-drugs, researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane (SF), a natural constituent of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, on Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II, CIS) nephropathy.

In rodents, before treatment with FN, cisplatin therapy triggered marked activation of stress signaling pathways to promote cancer cell death in the kidney by increasing the DNA fragmentation, apoptotic proteins,

Furthermore, CIS also exhibited the terminal associated with attenuation of various prosurvival signaling pathways and increased levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the kidney.

In other words, the injection of CIS not only induced kidney injury but also caused damage to the death of the kidney cells, through several aforementioned mechanisms.

After the administration of SF, all these effects were significantly attenuated by the pretreatment of rodents with SFN.

Based on the evidence, researchers wrote, " SFN is able to prevent the CIS-induced renal injury by modulating these pathways, providing a novel approach for preventing this devastating complication of chemotherapy".

Taken together, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process has the potential anti-side effect of CIS in the induction of kidney toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
