Esophagitis or heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). is a condition characterized by the going backup of acidic stomach contents to the esophagus?
Most cases of esophagitis are happened immediately after eating causing a burning sensation or pain in the lower chest area.
According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 20% of people with acid reflux will develop esophagitis.
More than 65% of people who suffer from acid reflux are 40 years old or older. And, 15 to 30 5 of the U.S. population has esophagitis
There is no single cause of esophagitis. Epidemiologically, eating large meals or lying down right after a meal, snacking close to bedtime, smoking, being overweight or obese, overeating certain foods such as citrus, tomato, chocolate, mint, garlic, onions, or spicy or fatty foods are some prevalent factors associated with the risk of esophagitis
First-time pregnant women may also experience esophagitis caused by increasing levels of hormones combined with pressure from the growing fetus.
Furthermore, long-term intake of certain medications such as bronchodilators for asthma, progestin for birth control or to treat abnormal menstrual bleeding, sedatives for insomnia and anxiety, and calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure.
Dr. Zeynel Mungan and colleagues in examing the medication risk of esophagitis wrote, "Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is common in many communities, is associated with structural factors, eating habits, and the use of certain drugs".
And, "The use of such drugs can lead to the emergence of GERD and can also exacerbate existing reflux symptoms. These drugs can contribute to GERD by directly causing mucosal damage, by reducing lower esophageal sphincter pressure (LESP), or by affecting esophagogastric motility".
Therefore, if you currently taking some of the aforementioned medications, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of esophagitis, researchers examined the role of lycopene (L) on radiation-induced acute esophageal toxicity in an animal model.
60 Wistar albino rats.selected to the study were divided into five groups: control, L, radiotherapy (RT), L before RT (L + RT), and L before and after RT (L + RT + L). 6 mg/kg bw/day with L administered 7 days in the L group, 7 days before RT in the L + RT group, and 7 days before and after in the L + RT + L group.
According to the tested analysis, L levels were significantly higher in the L-receiving groups, compared to the RT group.
Esophagitis was significantly worse in the RT group than in the non-RT group. Injection of lycopene in the L + RT and the L + RT + L groups showed better results than the RT group.
Compared to the RT group, grade 2-3 degenerative changes-necrosis and vacuole formation were significantly lesser in the L + RT and the L + RT + L groups.
Furthermore, subepithelial bulla formation and inflammation in the L + RT and the L + RT + L groups were also significantly decreased compared to the RT group.
Moreover, L + RT + L groups exerted the highest decrease to regeneration-mitosis compared to a moderate decrease in the L + RT group, compared to RT groups.
Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of esophagitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#BetaSitosterol Regulates mRNA and Protein Expression Against the Onset of #LiverFibrosis in Vitro and Vivo
Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.
Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue in a reparative or reactive process associated with responding to injury.
In some cases, the forming of scaring is also caused by the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines and/or interruption in the stage of injury recovery.
Liver fibrosis is a condition characterized by overly exuberant wound healing causing excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver. In other words, hepatic fibrosis is a condition in which a portion of the liver was affected by scar formation.
The exact causes of liver fibrosis are unknown. However, certain risk factors such as repeated liver injury caused by a virus infection, and a blockage in the bile ducts are found to elaborate on the onset of liver fibrosis.
Long-term untreated liver fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, a condition of severe scarring of the liver and life-threatening liver disease, including liver cancer.
The most common scale to grade the stage of liver fibrosis is the METAVIR scoring system. By examing the grade and stage of liver fibrosis of patients, their doctors can now determine the degree of severity to which patients' liver is affected.
Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers elucidated the β-sitosterol, a cholesterol-like phytosterol, which is widely distributed in the plant kingdom. the anti-fibrotic effect on human hepatic stellate cell (HSC) model and dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced mouse hepatic fibrosis model.
According to the results of the analysis of the hepato-fibrotic effect of β-sitosterol, at both of the mRNA and protein levels,
* β-sitosterol inhibited scar formation by down-regulating the mRNA and protein expression levels of collagen-1 and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), a key biomarker for liver fibrosis and in activated HSC.
* Furthermore, oral administration of the β-sitosterol successfully alleviated the DMN-induced mouse liver damage and prevented collagen accumulation.
In other words, β-sitosterol exerted liver cell-protective effects against the liver damage and parameters associated with the onset of liver fibrosis.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " the effect of β-sitosterol on the TGF-β -or DMN-induced hepatofibrosis. Hence, we demonstrate the β-sitosterol as a potential therapeutic agent for the hepatofibrosis".
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Turmeric Inhibits the Adiponectin Expression Against the Onset of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells In Vitro
Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a class of medical and chronic diseases caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of cell DNA in the tissue of a specific organ.
Cancer cell that grows and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably over time can induce the forming of tumor after penetrating deeper layers of the infected organ tissue.
At the advanced stage, most invasive tumors can travel a distance away to infect other organs in the body via lymph or blood.
The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with the function of inhaling oxygen from the air before passing them to other parts of the body and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the US. Believe it or not, each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.
Most people diagnosed with lung cancer are 65 or older, compared to a very small number of those younger than 45.
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer, that usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably including
* Squamous-cell carcinoma is a type of NSCLC often found in an outer area of the lung.
* Large-cell carcinoma is a type of NSCLC found in the center of the lung by an air tube.
* Adenocarcinoma is the type of NSCLC found in any part of the lung.
Dr. Paris D. Makrantonakis, the lead scientist in examined the correlation of NSCLC risk and treatment in the elderly wrote, "The population is aging both in developing and developed countries. What is clear is that currently, over 50% of all patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are 65 years of age or older".
And, "recently published studies have focused on the issue and have provided strong evidence of improved progression-free survival, overall survival, and quality of life in elderly patients with appropriately treated NSCLC".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), researchers examined the effect of curcumin on the expression of adiponectin in paired tumors and normal lung tissues from 77 patients with NSCLC.
Epidemiologically, patients with low adiponectin expression ratio (<1) were found to have significantly longer survival time compared to those with a high expression ratio and adiponectin may be a prognostic indicator of NSCLC.
Administration of curcumin showed to inhibit the migratory and invasive ability of A549 cells by inhibiting the adiponectin expression.
Furthermore, Curcumin treatment also inhibited the in vivo tumor growth of A549 cells associated with the adiponectin expression.
More precisely, the efficacy of curcumin that inhibits the NSCLC was attributed to the mediation of pathways involved in promoting tumor invasion.
Additionally, according to the Shanxi Province Tumor Hospital study, curcumin inhibited the A549 cell proliferation also was found by decreasing intracellular ROS levels and increasing SOD and gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) activity passcode with cancer cells apoptosis.
The results strongly suggested that curcumin-induced reduction of A549 viability. by inhibiting the expression of oxidative stress.
Taken together, turmeric-processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Omega 3 Fatty Acids Improve the Immune Function by Regulating Immunoregulatory Cytokines, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
An immune system is a system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease by identifying and killing pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc., and tumor cells, including irregular cell growth, and cancer cells to keep us healthy.
In most cases, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. But sometimes problems with the immune system can lead to illness and infection.
Although the immune system has done a great job in protecting us against foreign invasion, unfortunately, during the process of their functions, they may induce the production of free radicals and a chain of free radicals that can be harmful to our body.
Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.
In other words, depending on the substances that affect the immunomodulatory process, some may improve the immune function by modulating the genes involved in immune responses and protect the immune system against toxins or immunotoxic effects such as abnormal allergic reactions, others such as heavy metals can induce opposite effects.
In normal immunity, active immunity may also be artificially acquired active immunity is caused by the injection of the vaccine, a substance that contains antigen, and passive immunity is an auto-response of the immune system against infection through the production of antigen.
Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.
The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
In finding a potential phytochemical for the improvement of immune functioning, researchers examined the long-chain n-3 PUFAs (LCPUFAs) anti-atopic disease risk in infants.
The study included pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats randomly assigned to consume either SDA (3 g SDA/100 g fat) or a control (no SDA) diet, 5 d before parturition and through lactation (21 d).
Additionally, for oral tolerance (OT) treatment, 10-d-old pups were fed ovalbumin (Ova; 200 μL of 8 mg/mL) or placebo daily for 5 d. At 21 d,
According to the experimental results of pups (both sexes) that were weaned to their respective maternal diet until 6 wk of age and killed, the SDA-enriched maternal diet showed higher levels of plasma phospholipid (PL) EPA (15 times higher), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA; 3 times higher), and DHA (1.3 times higher) content in 3-wk-old pups, accompanied by higher B-cell function [plasma ovalbumin-specific IgG1, compared with the control diet.
Furthermore, compared with pups fed a control diet, the splenocytes from pups fed with the SDA diet had more (23%) helper T (Th) cells (CD3+CD4+) and activated (12%) Th cells (CD4+CD28+) (P < 0.02) than controls.
Moreover, at 6 wk, the SDA group stimulated ex vivo with LPS, also had 30% more CD4+CD25+ splenocytes and produced less inflammatory IL-6 (50%) and TNF-α (30%) and more immunoregulatory IL-10 (45%) cytokines, compared to the control group.
However, the splenocytes and plasma PLs from the 6-week-old SDA group had more EPA (2x) and DPA (3.5x) (P < 0.05), but not DHA, compared to the control group.
Additionally, the Ova-exposed group also had less (30%) plasma Ova-IgG1 than the placebo group.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Feeding SDA during lactation and weaning altered immune responses in directions believed to be beneficial".
Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the improvement of the immune response, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot inhibits the Production of Inflammatory Mediators and Cytokines by Suppressing the Immune Response
Kyle J. Norton
The immune system formed part of the body's defense plays a critical role in the protection of the body against infectious organisms.
The immune system executes the defense strategy through a series of immune response by attacking foreign substances that invade body systems.
A variety of factors have been found to trigger immune responses including pathogens, damaged cells, and toxic compounds.
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system which protects the body against the invasion of pathogens.
In the acute phase of tissue damage or wound, the immune white blood cells of the first line of defense stimulate the production of a blood palette to cover the wound or damage and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection against microbial invasion.
Most cases of microbial invasion are stopped in the acute phase of infection, and the damaged tissue is slowly healing itself. However, in this phase, the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines can lead to nearby cell death and the formation of scars.
If the immune system fails to destroy all microbial invasion in the acute phase of infection within a set period in 3 to weeks, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.
The continued production of low levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines overtimes regardless of the causes can induce damage to organ tissues, and irreversible chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
The Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Ce-M-M) wrote, "Humans have evolved highly complex immune systems that are composed of specialized immune cells that protect the host from infection and damage. But an uncontrolled immune response such as chronic inflammation can itself inflict damage".
And, "when the immune system is compromised by a genetic mutation, individuals become more susceptible to diseases such as autoimmune disease".
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of asthma and bronchitis, researchers examined the coltsfoot inhibitory effects on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in macrophages.
In a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced mouse model of sepsis, Tussilagone suppressed the parameters associated with the production of pro-inflammation such as nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2, and the inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), particularly in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells and peritoneal macrophages.
In other words, Tussilago inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators and cytokines by suppressing the immune response associated with the first line of defense.
Additionally, the administration of Tussilagone at doses of 1 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg) protects the lung cells by decreasing mortality and lung injury in CLP-activated septic mice.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " Tussilago exhibited protective effects against inflammation and polymicrobial sepsis by suppressing inflammatory mediators possibly via the inhibition of NF-κB activation and the MAP kinase pathway".
And, " These results suggest the possible use of Tussilago for developing novel therapeutic modalities for sepsis and other inflammatory diseases".
Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of inflammatory diseases associated with immune-inflammatory responses, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Black Carrot Extract Inhibits Menopausal Symptoms, Induces Weight Loss and Prevents Obesity, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Carrots may have a profound and positive effect on reducing weight loss in the obese population, some scientists suggested.
Weight loss is an intentional action referred to by the medicine, health, or physical fitness communities as a reduction of the total body mass, including loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue, or lean mass.
Obesity is a condition or disease characterized by extreme weight. According to the Body Mass Index calculator, BMI between 25.0 to <30 is considered overweight and a BMI of 30.0 or higher, is considered obese.
According to the National Institue of Health, obese people are associated with a number of diseases and conditions, including diseases of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, stroke, gallbladder disease, liver disease, certain types of respiratory disease, and infertility and conditions of high blood pressure, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis.
Most researchers agreed that obesity is caused by a genetic mutation inherited from the parents, a long-term unhealthy diet with consumption of high amounts of energy foods, particularly fat and sugars, and physical inactivity.
Other causative factors also include certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and Cushing's syndrome and the long-term use of certain medications such as corticosteroids and antidepressants.
The general belief also suggested that some smokers may gain weight if they quit smoking.
According to the study conducted by the J University of Georgia, using a combined approach to promote nutrition and physical activity policies and practices in early care and education may reduce the risk of child obesity.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.
Estrogen-deficient animals with diet-induced obesity were examined in the study by the Obesity/Diabetes Center, Asan, Korea using black carrots to test the mechanisms of the long-term consumption of unfermented black carrot extract (BC) and its extracts fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (BCLP) or Aspergillus oryzae (BCAO) in the prevention of menopausal symptoms including impaired energy, glucose, and lipid metabolism
During the experiment, ovariectomized (OVX) rats were fed four different high-fat diets containing 2 % dextrin (OVX-control), 2 % BC, 2 % BCLP, or 2 % BCAO for 12 weeks. Sham rats were fed high-fat diets containing 2 % dextrin.
Fat mass and weight gain in tested mice were lower in descending order of OVX-control > BC and BCLP > BCAO due to increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation.
BC, BCLP and especially BCAO all normalized HOMA-IR, an indicator of insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.
Furthermore, BCAO markedly decreased hepatic triglyceride levels by increasing gene expressions of CPT-1 and PPAR-α, which are involved in fatty acid oxidation, and decreasing mRNA expressions of FAS and SREBP-1c, which are associated with fatty acid synthesis.
More importantly, Cyanidin and malvidin markedly decreased fat accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by increasing CPT-1 and decreasing FAS expression in the liver fat metabolism and SREBP-1c expression in the regulation of the genes with the function of lipid metabolism in comparison with cyanidin-3-rutinoside, an anthocyanin, and malvidin-3,5-diglycosides, another anthocyanidin.
Where 3T3-L1 is a cell line derived from 3T3 cells used in biological research on adipose tissue.
These results suggested that unfermented black carrot extract (BC) and its extracts fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (BCLP) processed an anti-obesity mechanism by preventing the exacerbation of lipid and glucose metabolism, the major causes of weight gain.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti-weight gain possibilities.

Blood vessels formed part of the circulatory system are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart. Atherosclerosis is characterized by chronic inflammation of the vascular wall.
Chronic vascular inflammation has been found to cause historical changes in the blood vessel walls, leading to blood vessel wall thickening, weakening, narrowing, or scarring on orchestrating blood flow restriction, resulting in organ and tissue damage.
Vasoprotection is the process to improve the function of the blood vessels, including the use of herbal and natural remedies.
Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system's self-protection to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, pathogens... from our body.
Acute inflammatory inflammation is a result of the over-response of the immune system after sensing the injury or damage to the body by activating the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
The production of proinflammatory cytokines induced by the immune response is to kill the invasive pathogens, which try to enter the body through the wound.
In the acute phase of infection, the immune system in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines may induce overproduction of these cytokines can cause death or damage to the nearby cells, leading to scar formation and symptoms of localized swelling, redness, and fever.
Chronic inflammation is a serious condition caused by the immune system's to adapt to the new change due to its inability to kill all the invasions within a set of times.
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem which is crowded with a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
With an aim to find natural food that inhibits inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC).
According to the inhibitory effects in cultured endothelial cells and hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α, the pro-inflammatory cytokines-stimulated endothelial cells.
Furthermore, ArCC's also processed the ability to downregulate the expression and transcription of endothelial adhesion molecules associated with the increased response to cytokines and other inflammatory mediators.
Moreover, the regulation of adhesion molecules was accompanied by transcriptional inhibition of nuclear factor-κB, which restricted cytoplasmic localization in triggering inflammation.
Additionally, Administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) inhibited aortic inflammation in hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice,
More precisely, ArCC markedly lowered leukocyte infiltration reduced plaque formation, and lowered concentrations of blood inflammatory cytokines compared to control mice.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " ...the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases.".
Taken altogether, Korean cabbage kimchi may be used for the treatment of vascular inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
