#Flavonoids and #Phenolic Found in #Artichoke #Leaf #Extract Modulate the Genotoxicity Against Carcinogens, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Substances such as radionuclides, or radiation which can cause the onset of cancer with or without changing the cell DNA are considered carcinogens.

In contrast to general belief, unhealthy lifestyle, long-term exposure to sunlight, certain medical treatments such as radiation, and medications such as immune-suppressive drugs, chemical exposure may also be considered carcinogens.

However, most people exposed to the substances have never developed cancer.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), substances that cause cancer in humans can be classified into 5 categories.
Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans
Group 2A: Probably carcinogenic to humans
Group 2B: Possibly carcinogenic to humans
Group 3: Unclassifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans
Group 4: Probably not carcinogenic to humans

The most dangerous carcinogens are placed in group 1. Therefore, if you are handling any of the substances in group 1 (the list can be found here), please make sure you protect yourself according to the standard guidelines.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas, bloating, etc.

Researchers on the finding of natural therapeutics which block carcinogens in the induction of cancer investigated the antigenotoxic and antioxidant effects of the extract of artichoke Cynara cardunculus L. (CCE).

In the Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutagenicity/antimutagenicity assay, CCE significantly reduced the frequency of 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide-induced genetics alternation in the diploid Saccharomyces cerevisiae tester strain D7.

In the simultaneous toxicity and clastogenicity/anticlastogenic assay, CCE exerted an anticlastogenic effect against N-nitroso-N'-methyl urea-induced clastogenicity in the plant species.

According to the free radical scavenging assay, CCE also exhibited considerable antioxidant activity against carcinogens.

In order to reveal more information about artichoke, anticarcinogenic activity researchers examined the genotoxicity of C. scolymus L. leaf extract (LE) and the ability to modulate the genetic toxicity of the alkylating agent ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), using the comet assay on Chinese hamster ovary cells.

LE demonstrated strong anti-genotoxicity after 1- and 24-h treatments by 4 different doses: 0.62, 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/mL, according to the results from pretreatment, simultaneous treatment, and post-treatment.

All doses also protect the cell against DNA damage induced by the alkylating agent ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS), after exposure for 1 and 24 h.

Interestingly, the lowest dose of LE was more protective than higher concentrations.

The genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects were attributed to the bioactive flavonoids and phenolic compounds found abundantly in artichoke.

Taken together, artichoke-processed bioactive compound flavonoids and phenolic may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of carcinogenic toxicity, with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Effects of #Capsicum Found in #Herbal #Cayenne On High Blood Pressure, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal cayenne processed a significant amount of bioactive compound Capsicum may have a positive and profound effect on normalizing the levels of blood pressure, according to studies.

Hypertension is a medical condition of abnormally high blood pressure, one of the members of the cluster of conditions associated with heart disease and stroke.

Depending on the reading, some researchers suggested if you are in stage one of high blood pressure, your risk of cardiovascular disease is increased by 10% over the next 10 years.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 75 million people, or 1 in 3 U.S. adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be modified by change of lifestyle.

The most common risk factors for high blood pressure are a poor diet with high in salt and potassium and low in vitamin D, being physically inactive, excessive alcohol drinking, use of Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), and aging.

However, not all people with some of the above conditions will develop high blood pressure.

Treatment of stage 1 and 2 hypertension include daily intake of diuretics which lower high blood pressure by reducing sodium and fluid through increased urinary secretion and Bumetanide (Bumex) Chlorthalidone (Hygroton) or Chlorothiazide (Diuril).

Some patients may experience side effects such as a cough, diarrhea or constipation, dizziness or nervousness, tiredness, weak, and nausea or vomiting.

In a serious case, high blood pressure medication may induce erectile dysfunction. If you are taking high blood pressure medications, please make sure you have discussed the side effects with your doctor.

Some researchers in concerned about widespread hypertension in the Western world suggested that the condition may correlate to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Adriana Monge and colleagues examined the Western and Modern Mexican diet pattern and risk of high blood pressure, wrote, "The multivariable-adjusted odds of hypertension in the highest quartile of the Western (W) pattern were 24% higher than the odds for individuals in the lowest quartile"

And, "women in the highest quartile of the MM pattern had 15% higher odds than women in the lowest quartile. The Fruits & Vegetables (FV) pattern was not significantly associated with hypertension".

These results clearly indicated a strong connection between the Western diet pattern in the increased risk of hypertension compared to the lower risk of fruits and vegetable groups.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to subtropical and tropical regions.

The pepper has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance the circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

Epidemiological studies linking cayenne in reducing hypertension have not been conclusive, the mechanism of this effect is still a mystery.

Researchers on finding herbal medicine for the treatment of hypertension with no side effects examined the traditionally used medicinal plants against key enzymes relevant for hyperglycemia and hypertension.

Compared to other herbal plants, pepper (Capsicum) inhibited significantly the hypertension-relevant angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE).

All evaluated pepper (Capsicum) genus exhibited both anti-hyperglycemia and anti-hypertension potential.

The anti-high blood pressure of cayenne probably is associated with the major compound capsaicin, chlorogenic acid, and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives.

However, in the pig study, application capsaicin isolated from the cayenne showed a significantly increased mean arterial blood pressure compared with controls, and a decrease in CGRP synthesis and release contributes to the elevated blood pressure.

Also, there are 2 cases reported of an arterial hypertensive crisis in a patient with large ingestion of peppers and chili peppers the day before and a 19-year-old Italian man with abundant ingestion of peppers and of chili peppers the preceding day.

Additionally, overdoses of cayenne not only induced arterial hypertensive crisis but also acute myocardial infarction with high levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone.

The findings strongly suggested cayenne processed an antihypertensive and hypertensive effect in a dose-dependent manner.

These dual mechanisms presented in Cayenne may not be explained by conventional medicine. However, traditional Chinese medicine stated cayenne, yang in nature, promotes the Qi movement of blood. In a healthy individual, the smooth movement of qi reduces unnecessary blood pressure in blood transportation. On the other hand, if the movement of qi is blocked due to the presence of a high amount of cholesterol that narrows the blood vessel, it induces higher blood pressure.

The traditional Chinese medicine continued, injection of a high amount of cayenne pepper can cause constriction of blood vessels, leading to narrowing blood flow and risk of hypertension

Taken together, there is no doubt that cayenne may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, but the amount of intake should only be prescribed by related field specialists.

#Ethanol #Extract from Leaves From #Herbal #Artichoke Inhibits Enzymes Agaisnt the Risk of #Diabetes through Its Antioxidant Activity, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by not enough insulin entering the bloodstream as a result of the loss of beta cells in the pancreas or insulin receptor sites clogged by plaques that are responsible for the production of insulin.

The insulin receptor sites processed a function that binds the insulin and passes the message into the cell, leading to the transformation of glucose from the blood to energy.

The hallmark of diabetes is insulin resistance. The condition has been found to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease even without the presence of diabetes.

The exact causes of insulin resistance are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and lifestyle are major risk factors that cause the onset of the syndrome.

According to the statistics, in the US, between 60 to 70 million individuals are affected by insulin resistance. More than 40% of individuals older than 50 years may be at risk of insulin resistance.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread insulin resistance in the US may be a result of the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Merat S, in the examination of the Western-type diets in the risk of insulin resistance, said, "the Western diets commonly used in LDLR-/- mice may not only induce atherosclerosis but also IR, potentially complicating the interpretation of results".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas, and bloating, etc.

Researchers on the finding of natural therapeutics for the treatment of diabetes investigated the artichoke leaves extract on metabolic disorders and oxidative stress in alloxan-diabetic rats.

The study included 40 male Wistar rats induced diabetes with a single dose intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of alloxan (150 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)) randomly assigned to orally and daily administrated of ethanol extract from C. scolymus at two doses (200-400 mg/kg, b.w) or (12 mg/kg, b.w).

According to the tested assays, the ethanol extract from leaves of C. scolymus showed the highest antioxidant activity and endowed the powerful inhibition in vitro of α-amylase activity with IC50=72,22 ug/uL.

In vivo, the ethanol extract from the leaves of C. scolymus (200-400 mg/kg) decreased significantly the levels of α-amylase enzymes involved in the digestion of carbohydrates in the serum of diabetic rats.

Furthermore, the administration of ethanol extract improved the anti-oxidative activity demonstrated by the increase of CAT, SOD, and GSH activities in the liver, kidney, and pancreas of diabetic rats.

Compared to diabetic rats, the ethanol extract from leaves of C. scolymus also decreased blood glucose rate, plasma total cholesterol (T-Ch) and triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) after 28 days of treatment.

Researchers after taking into account other factors said, "These observed strongly suggest that ethanol extract from the leaves of C. scolymus has anti-hyperglycemic properties, at least partly mediated by antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects".

In order to reveal additional information about artichoke antidiabetic properties, researchers in the joint study led by Hallym University examined the Jerusalem artichoke inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and fasting serum glucose levels.

In a non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus animal model (C57BIKsJ db/db) selected for the study, water extract of PJA fermented by L. plantarum, and two strains of Bacillus subtilis injection showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity in vitro, compared to original Jerusalem artichoke (PJA).

PJA fermentation group significantly lower blood glucose concentration than the control.

At the end of 7 weeks, PJA fermentation group also induced higher levels of serum insulin and HDL cholesterol levels and lower the concentrations of triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids, and total cholesterol.

Additionally, the intestinal α-glucosidase activity was partially inhibited by the PJA fermentation injection.

Taken together, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#CucumberSeeds #Extract Intake Daily Exerts Strong Effects on Serum Lipid Profile in Hyperlipidemic Patients, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high blood lipid in the bloodstream a major cause of plaque accumulation on the arterial wall that leads to the increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Cholesterol produced either by the liver or fat intake is essential to aid the digestive system in digesting foods and absorbing nutrients before passing them to other parts of the body, building a strong cell wall, produce vitamin D and steroid hormones.

There are 2 main types of cholesterol. The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) carries the aforementioned function and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL)which returns the cholesterol back to the liver for reuse in the future.

The healthy blood cholesterol ratio of total blood cholesterol of LDL/ HDL is any number that are less than 4.

People with high blood cholesterol are asymptomatic. Conventionally, the condition can be lowered by regular intake of blood cholesterol-lowering medicine.

The most common risk factors that cause the onset of high blood cholesterol are unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

Some researchers in the examination of the widespread high blood cholesterol over the past few decades probably are associated with the promotion of the high-fat diet in the US.

Dr. Cole TG, the lead scientist wrote," In normals, dietary cholesterol increases LDL production and decreases LDL receptor-related LDL clearance, resulting in elevations in LDL cholesterol levels of approximately 30 mg/dL".

Therefore, by changing behaviors in lifestyle, you may just be doing fine without medication. Please sure you talk to your doctor before withholding.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia with no side effects, researchers examined the efficacy of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seed, used traditionally as a lipid-lowering nutritional supplement.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial included hyperlipidemic patients with inclusion criteria randomly and equally assigned to either Cucumis or placebo groups or one medicinal or placebo capsule, once daily with food for 6 weeks.

According to the tested assays obtained from 23 patients in Cucumis group and 23 patients in the placebo group completed the study, cucumber seed extract-treated group showed a significant reduction of total cholesterol, and BMI index compared to baseline taken before the treatment

The extract also increased the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HLD) compared to the placebo.

More precisely, at a concentration of daily dose of 500 mg, the consumption of C. sativus seed extract daily exerted strong effects on serum lipid profile in tested adult hyperlipidemic patients.

In other words, daily injection at the ceratin dose may have a desirable effect in the prevention of hyperlipidemia in facilitating the onset of cholesterol build-up on the arteries and the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Cucumber seed could be considered as a food supplement for treatment of dyslipidemia".

Taken together, cucumber may be used for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Withanolide D (WND) Isolated From #Herbal #Ashwagandha Exerts Anti Multiple Myeloma Activity by Its Cytostatic Effects, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Multiple myeloma (Myeloma) is a type of cancer that originated from plasma cells in the bone marrow.
The disease is a condition of DNA alternation of white blood cells normally responsible for the production of antibodies to protect our body against infection with some characteristics.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, multiple myeloma is a relatively uncommon cancer. In the United States, the lifetime risk of getting multiple myeloma is 1 in 132 (0.76%).

Every year, approximately, 32,110 new cases are diagnosed, including 18,130 in men and 13,980 in women. The disease also causes the death of 12,960 Americans including 6,990 in men and 5,970 in women.

The Grades of multiple myeloma are depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.

The exact causes of MS are unknown. Epidemiologically, the increase in age (If you are between 50 and 70 years old you are at higher risk to develop Multiple Myeloma), gender (men are more likely to develop multiple myeloma than women), race (Cancer tends to affect blacks more often than whites), previous multiple myeloma, exposed to certain chemicals, family history, and radiation
The most common symptoms of MS are* Bone pain
Abnormal growth of plasma cells can cause a collapse of the bone.

* Infection
Overcrowding of abnormal plasma cells reduces the functions of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow, leading to a weakened immune system. The most common infections found to be pneumonia and pyelonephritis.

* Anemia
As a result, malignant plasma cells have to interfere with the normal production of red blood cells.

* Bleeding
Due to the lower production of the platelet.

* Renal failure
Abnormal plasma cells can also affect the function of the kidney in getting rid of waste, causing urea and creatinine to accumulate in the bloodstream.

* Neurological symptoms
Hypercalcemia is a result of the breakdown of the bone caused by the release of calcium into the bloodstream.

However, most people with some of the above symptoms never developed MS.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of tumors of the bone marrow, researchers examined the growth inhibitory effects of withanolide D (WND), a steroidal lactone isolated from Withania somnifera on drug-resistant subpopulation known as cancer stem cells (CSCs).

According to tested assays, WND exhibited similar cytostatic effects by inhibiting cancer cell growth and division. on drug-resistant and drug-sensitive cell lines in the nM range.

In cancer cell lines MM-CSCs and RPMI 8226, the administration of WND also induced cancer cell death and apoptosis.

However, WND did not increase the accumulation of the fluorescent P-gp substrate rhodamine 123 in MM-CSCs associated with cancer cells' drug resistance. More precisely, the result suggested that WND at the tested doses may not inhibit P-gp accumulation involved in the development of resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic drugs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the WND-induced cytostatic effect may be independent of P-gp efflux".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of myeloma, pending to the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Onions Intake Daily and Regularly Are Associated with A Reduced Risk of #StomachCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

Stomach cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach.

Depending on the location of the cancer that starts the malignancy, stomach cancer can be classified into
* Adenocarcinoma arose from the glands in the mucosa, including
** Superficial spreading
It is an early stage of cancer and tends to be less aggressive.

** Polyploid
Cancer grows in a pattern like a polyp and is less aggressive.

** Infiltrating
If cancer grows in infiltrating pattern into the stomach wall and is more aggressive.

** Linitis plastica
Cancer grows diffusivity throughout the whole wall of the stomach.
Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

* Lymphomas
Cancer of the lymphocytes originating from the stomach behaves much like lymphomas of the other parts of the body but adenocarcinoma

* Sarcomas
The cancer originated from the connected tissue of the stomach and behaves much like sarcomas of the other parts of the body but adenocarcinoma.

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of stomach cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive effects of Allium vegetables (onions, garlic, shallots, leeks, chives, and so forth) on gastric cancer risk.

The study includes the research of MEDLINE studies of Allium vegetable consumption and gastric cancer published in any language, from January 1, 1966, to September 1, 2010.
19 case-control and 2 cohort studies, of 543,220 subjects. were selected in the analysis. Onion and other allium vegetable consumption in large amounts reduced the risk for gastric cancer with an odds ratio of 0.54 in the comparison of the highest and lowest consumption groups.

More precisely, an increment of 20 g/day of Allium vegetables consumed (approximately the average weight of 1 garlic bulb) showed a summary odds ratio of 0.91 based on case-control studies from the dose-response meta-analysis.

These results strongly suggested that regular consumption of onion has an inverse association with the risk of stomach cancer in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, the risk of stomach cancer was reduced proportionally to the amount of onion intake regularly.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Butterbur Processes Anti #SeasonalAllergicRhinitis Activity, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Butterbur may be considered an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis, some scientists suggested.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is a condition of inflammation of the nasal passages as a result of seasonal allergic effects.

Most cases of rhinitis are caused by the immune system's overreaction to pollen, mold, animal dander, or dust, the body releases chemicals.

Most people with acute allergic rhinitis are experiencing symptoms of sneezing, itchiness, and a blocked or runny nose.

However, some people may have chronic allergic rhinitis, because they're sensitive to all seasonal allergens, including tree or grass pollen.

Most acute allergic rhinitis does not require medical attention, however, if your acute allergic rhinitis lasts for several months and disrupts your daily activity, you may want to check with your doctor to rule out other possibilities.

Long-term untreated allergic rhinitis may induce complications of nasal polyps, sinusitis, and middle ear infections.

Most cases of allergic rhinitis can be treated with counter medicine, including non-sedating antihistamines and nasal passage spray with a saltwater solution.

In a severe case, a stronger medication, such as a nasal spray containing corticosteroids can be helpful.

Please make sure that you know all the side effects of corticosteroids for preventive measures.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetlands, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The Chemical ingredients of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene, and ethylene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.

In the study to re-examine the recent literature regarding the alternative therapies for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, Dr. Man LX, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, found that although there are several studies that report beneficial effects of Butterbur for treating allergic rhinitis. additional insight into the mechanisms of action, short-term and long-term effects, and adverse events are necessary before herbal medicine can be integrated into the general treatment armamentarium of allergic rhinitis.

Dr. Guo R, the lead author in the study to investigate the efficacy of herbal medicines for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) launched a search in the 5 electronic databases published before and on November 8, 2005.

The guideline and criteria were set to only include double-blind randomized clinical trials (RCTs), which tested a herbal medicine against a placebo or an active comparator, in patients with AR, and evaluated clinically relevant outcomes.

Study selection, data extraction, and evaluation of methodological quality were performed independently by 2 reviewers.

16 eligible RCTs, testing 10 different herbal products against a placebo or an active comparator, were included.

Out of 16 selected studies, Six RCTs studied suggested that Petasites hybridus (butterbur) extract is superior to a placebo or similarly effective compared with nonsedative antihistamines for intermittent AR.

In the final report of the study, the doctors wrote, "There is encouraging evidence suggesting that P hybridus may be an effective herbal treatment for seasonal (intermittent) AR".

These results suggested that herbal Butterbur may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis without inducing serious side effects.
