Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals in the induction of oxidative stress.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.
Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.
However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.
Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as a mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stones, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of Anthyllis vulneraria L., Fuchsia sp., Galium mollugo L., and Veronica beccabunga L.
According to the chemical analysis, the Galium mollugo polyphenol tannin, and flavonoid contents are 1.77 ± 0.05, 0.49 ± 0.04, and 0.16 ± 0.06 g/100 g dry weight) compared to those of Fuchsia species of 7.40 ± 0.8, 5.62 ± 0.7 and 0.72 ± 0.1 g/100 g dry weight and Anthyllis vulneraria (0.68 ± 0.02, 0.17 ± 0.03 and 0.45 ± 0.01 g/100 g dry weight., respectively.
More precisely, herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) showed a higher total polyphenol, tannin, and flavonoid contents than A. vulneraria but lower, compared to those of Fuchsia sp.
In other words, all antioxidant compounds found in herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) work together to exert anti-free radical activity in the stimulation of the onset of oxidative stress.
Taken together, Cleaver processed an antioxidant activity against the risk of oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel #Equeous Extract Protectrs the Gastric Function Against the Risk of Infantile Colic and Colitis, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Fennel may have a profound and positive effect on the reduced risk of infantile colic, some scientists suggest.
Infantile colic is a reaction of the infant if episodes of crying for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for three weeks in an otherwise healthy child. The condition has a strong impact on the psychological, emotional, and physical burden to parents.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

4. Thiamine (Vitamin B1)
5. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
6. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
7. Pantothenic acid (B5)
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness and side effects of phytotherapeutic agents with Matricariae recutita, Foeniculum vulgare, and Melissa officinalis in the treatment of infantile colic in a total of 93 breastfed colicky infants conducted by the John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, after a 3 day observation period, the infants randomly assigned to groups treated with the phytotherapeutic agent (PA) and the group received placebo twice a day for 1 week, researchers found that crying time in the group received PA was reduced substantially in 85.4% of subjects in compared to 48.9% subjects in placebo group against a baseline.
The PA treatment group exerted no side effects during the period of the experiment.
Based on the result, researchers suggested that PA demonstrated a significant activity within one week of application in infantile colic.
Furthermore, the St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postdoctoral Education in concerned with the side effects of 5% of infants treated with dicyclomine hydrochloride, the only pharmacological treatment for infantile colic, with substantial side effects, including death, conducted a randomized placebo-controlled trial of 125 infants, 2 to 12 weeks of age from 2 large multi-specialty clinics by assigning them to either group treated with fennel or placebo, indicated that fennel treatment group improves the crying time episodes and frequency significantly in compared to the placebo group.
According to the Wessel assay, infantile colic was reduced by 65% (40/62) in the treatment group in comparison to only 23.7% (14/59) in placebo.
Further analysis also found that the application of fennel induced a risk reduction of 41% in comparison to placebo without causing any side effects.
Although the causes of infantile colic are unknown, some researchers suggested that the results of fennel in treatment of infantile colic may be attributed to its efficacy in the hypothetical conditions catalyzed by
*Abnormal gastrointestinal function caused by imbalanced of the bacterial ratio
According to the literature reported by the Swansea University, the application of fennel essential oil has a sustainable effect in inhibiting E. coli growth, observed by disc diffusion assays and in liquid culture.
These results were illustrated by the effect of an aqueous extract of the aerial part and an aqueous extract of seed samples of fennel.
Fennel inhibited the overgrowth of Agrobacterium radiobacter pv. tumefacient, Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas fluorescens, andPseudomonas glycinea, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomona aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, and Bacillus cereus in maintenance integrity of digestive function.
Further differentiation also suggested that fennel has a strong impact in protecting gastric damage through significantly increased nitrite, nitrate, ascorbic acid, retinol, and beta-carotene levels.
Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, the lead author, in the differentiation of fennel, in regard to the gastrointestinal effect, said, "Foeniculum vulgare is indicated in the treatment of spastic gastrointestinal disturbances, in some forms of chronic colitis (which resist other treatments), in dyspepsias from gastrointestinal atony, in dyspepsias with the sensation of heaviness in the stomach, and so forth. The addition of fennel to preparations containing anthraquinone components reduces the occurrence of abdominal pain often associated with this type of laxative"
* In Psychological aspect of mother such as mother’s depression, anxiety and distress during pregnancy in induction of infantile colic, although there is no direct literature to confirm the efficacy of fennel in treating syndromes of this group of women, in the study of psychological symptoms in women with premenstrual syndrome, application of fennel seed was associated in decreased depression and anxiety.
Also, in stress-induced maternal anxiety and depression, the application of fennel extract (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight) showed a significant improvement of urinary levels of vanillyl mandelic acid(VMA) and ascorbic acid excretion levels in the measurement of potentially psychological stress in the fennel treatment group in compared to the normal group.
These results indicated that the extract of the entire plant of F. Vulgare pay has a potential effect by acting as an anti-stress agent in reducing depression and anxiety during maternity.
* In the food allergic aspect, although there are no direct studies on the expression of a fennel-improved immune response against food allergy,.
Some researchers postulated that anethole, a bioactive compound from fennel inhibited food allergy probably through enhancing the immune system's food hypersensitivity response by modulating the expression of Foxp3+ in regulated the development and function T cells and inhibition of Th2 cytokines in promoted antibodies production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), thus reducing immune system overreacts to an allergen.
Taken together, the findings suggested that fennel may be considered as a function food for treatment of infantile colic, however, a large sample size and study by multi centers are necessary to reconfirm the viability.

#Ashwagandha Protects the Beta Cells of Pancreas Against the Onset of #Diabetes by Enhancing Antioxidant Activity in Vivo
Kyle J. Norton
Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream. Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia are hallmarks of diabetes.
In other words, insulin produced by the pancreas is either blocked by the clogging-up of the insulin receptors by fat and cholesterol or the death of beta cells in the pancreas. In some cases, diabetes can also be associated with autoimmune disease, attacking the beta cells.
There are some major types of diabetes, including the best known, type 1 and 2.
* Type 1 diabetes is associated with a genetic proposition that leads to the immune system to attack insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.
* Type 2 diabetes (acquired diabetes), is a condition caused by either the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or the insulin does not work properly due to dysfunction of the insulin receptors.
In pregnancy, gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes occurred during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Gestation diabetes goes away after giving birth.
However, omen with gestation diabetes is associated with a substantial risk of diabetes developing sometimes in the future.
Epidemiologically, obesity, an unhealthy lifestyle with physical inactivity are some of the most common risk factors associated with the slow onset of diabetes.
Interestingly, some researchers suggested, night shifts workers accompanied by unhealthy lifestyles are linked to a high risk of type 2 diabetes suggested, " risk of type 2 diabetes is actually higher than simply adding the individual risks associated with unhealthy lifestyle and shift work together, indicating that combining an unhealthy lifestyle with irregular night-time working adds a further risk".
"It is well-established that unhealthy lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, a poor diet, little exercise, and being overweight or obese increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Shift work, especially night shift work, has also been associated with a greater risk of type 2 diabetes".
Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
With an aim to find a potent compound for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS) on lipid peroxidation (LPO) and pancreas in type 2 diabetic rats.
The study included type 2 diabetes induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (100 mg/kg) to 2 days old rat pups pretreated by WS.
According to the tested analysis, the untreated rats' group showed significant levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) observed by reducing levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host including glutathione (GSH) contents, and by enzymatic activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT).
However, injection of WS not only caused a significant decrease in blood glucose and tissue LPO levels caused by the application of STZ but also a significant increase in GSH contents, compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.
Furthermore, antioxidant enzymes reduced in the untreated rat such as GPx, GR, GST, SOD, and CAT were also increased compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.
Most importantly, the significant reduction in the number and size of pancreatic beta-cells in STZ rats was normalized upon the administration of WS, evident from the histopathological examination.
In other words, WS protects the cells in the pancreas against oxidation and maintains the integrity of beta cells in insulin production in type 2 diabetes rats.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "WS has shown strong free radical scavenging activity and helped in improving the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants in type 2 diabetic rats".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha WS may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending the results of a large example size and multicenter study.

#BetaSitosterol Protects the Pancreatic Islets and Inhibits Parameters Against the Risk of Type 2 #Diabetes, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice into the small intestine, the pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas, as a vital organ that is responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.
More precisely, the functions of the pancreas including the
* Production of enzymes digest fat, protein, and
carbohydrates.
* Production of juices combined with juices from the intestines to break down protein, carbohydrates, and fat, therefore, it plays an important role in maintaining good health.
* Production of insulin, which is important in regulating the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood.
Pancreatic islets are groups of hormones producing cells, including insulin and glucagon, that work together to maintain the proper level of sugar (glucose) in the blood.
Profound distortion of islet organization in the pancreas has been found to induce account abnormal secretory behavior of the glucagon-secreting A cells in insulin-dependent juvenile-onset diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form of diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.
As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle changes.
According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.
About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.
Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, researchers elucidated the anti-diabetic effects of the extract of A. tenuifolia underground parts and β-sitosterol on rat pancreatic islets.
According to the results of the analysis,* The root extract of the plant and compound β-sitosterol isolated from the root extracts showed moderate α-amylase inhibitory activity.
* Furthermore, the herb root extract was able to increase the secretion of insulin in high concentrations (10 mg/mL) and improved the cell viability with no toxicity in all doses.
* The herbal extract could reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) associated with the onset of oxidative stress in orchestrating damage to the pancreatic islets.
* Moreover, the plant extract also significantly decreased the enzyme activity associated with pro-apoptotic expression by increasing the antioxidant capacity of the isolated cells.
In other words, all compounds found in the extract work synergistically to protect the pancreatic islets by inhibiting all parameters involved in pancreatic damage, particularly, the compound β-sitosterol
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol combined with other phytochemicals found in A. tenuifolia underground parts may be considered a supplement for the protection of pancreatic islets-induced diabetes, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Total Phenolic Acids Found in #CarrotJuice Process Anti Hypertension Activity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a common vegetable that has the potential to decrease high blood pressure quickly with no side effects, some studies suggested.
Hypertension is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.
In the US approximately, one-third of the adults have hypertension, affecting over 77 million people in the country.
Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.
Hypertension is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.
The cause of hypertension is a result of the hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries,
Some researchers suggested that hypertension is associated with the risk factors of a genetic preposition, longterm unhealthy diet, and lifestyle.
Dr. Butler MG, the lead scientist at the Kansas University Medical Center, in the study "Genetics of hypertension. Current status" wrote, " The heritable component of blood pressure has been documented in familial and twin studies suggesting that 30%-50% of the variance of blood pressure readings are attributable to genetic heritability and about 50% to environmental factors".
However, the genes that cause the onset of hypertension are unknown. Researchers suggested that
all genes involved with the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system controlling blood pressure and salt-water homeostasis, proteins in hormonal regulation of blood pressure (enzymes and receptors of the minerals- and glucocorticoid pathways), and proteins coded by genes involved in the structure and/or regulation of vascular tone are susceptible to the cause of the condition.
Furthermore, according to the Journal of Human Hypertension in the article "Dietary and lifestyle factors in hypertension", the adoption of a healthy diet and lifestyle is important for preventing hypertension among individuals who are free of hypertension and has a central role in improved blood pressure control among patients with hypertension.6–8 For patients with hypertension, dietary and lifestyle interventions are commonly recommended as an initial strategy or as an adjunct to antihypertensive medication to control blood pressure and improve the cardiovascular risk profile.
And, regular physical activity and aerobic exercise of more than 5 h per week were associated with a lower risk of incident hypertension.18 and an anaerobic interval training program 2 days per week reduced levels of blood pressure in hypertensive and normotensive men.
These results suggested that if you follow a healthy diet, lifestyle, and regular physical activity, you can not have hypertension regardless of the genetic preposition.
Unmanaged hypertension can lead to a heart attack, stroke, and other complications such as hypertensive retinopathy. chronic kidney disease.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.
In the study to reaffirm the effects of Daucus carota (carrot) for the treatment of hypertension in traditional medicine, researchers at The Aga Khan University Medical College conducted an experiment to test the antihypertensive activity of two coumarin glycosides DC-2 and DC-3 isolated from the vegetable.
In normotensive anesthetized rats, intravenous administration of the compounds lowers the arterial blood pressure in a dose-dependent of 1-10 mg/kg.
In vitro, both compounds caused a dose-dependent (10-200 microg/ml) inhibitory effect on spontaneously beating guinea pig atria as well as on the K+ -induced contractions of rabbit aorta at similar concentrations.
The findings suggested that carrots may process antihypertensive properties by blocking the calcium channels which can induce the membrane excitation of vascular muscle in contributing to hypertension.
In the concerns of obesity associated with chronic, low-grade inflammation predisposing the individual to hypertension and impaired blood glucose homeostasis, scientists launched an investigation to examine whether phenolic acids from purple carrots are effective at reversing inflammation and metabolic alterations through the mean of the acid in the Mediterranean diet
After the final assessment, researchers found that
* The mean intake of total phenolic acids of 362.6 mg/day is associated with a reduced risk of hypertension.
* When taking into account individual subclasses of phenolic acids, only hydroxyphenyl acetic acid was inversely associated with hypertension.
The findings suggest that dietary phenolic acids may be inversely associated with hypertension, irrespective of their dietary source.
Taken together, purple carrots with abundant phenolic acids may be considered a natural functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension.

#Tocopherols Combined with #Pentoxifylline Inhibit #Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) Induced by Radiotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer Patients
Kyle J. Norton
Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers found in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.
Most cases of head and neck cancer, at the early stage, start with the cell growth irregularly and disorderly on the surface of the inner lining of the head and neck.
At the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck, or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia), and frequent and persistent coughing.
At this stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.
The exact causes of head and neck cancer are unknown. However, certain prevalent risk factors such as prolonged sun exposure, infection by the Human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), poor oral and dental hygiene and occupational inhalants, long-term marijuana, and tobacco use and involuntary smoking are associated with the onset of head and neck cancer.
Dr. Kazuhiro Kobayashi in the investigation of the risk of HPV on head and neck cancer (HNC) wrote, " Infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of HNSCCs. It is now widely accepted that high-risk HPV is a cause of almost all cervical cancers as well as some forms of HNSCCs. HPV-related HNSCCs are increasing".
Osteoradionecrosis is a condition associated with bone death due to exposure to radiation or radiation treatment.
The death of bone cells is a result of radiation induce-damage to the blood vessel that supplies the nutrients to the bone.
Osteoradionecrosis is a rare side effect occurred sometime after radiation therapy has ended. The complication usually occurs in the lower jaw or mandible.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of the modalities of the combination therapy of pentoxifylline and tocopherol in Vitamin E (PVe) against osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw induced by radiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients.
The study included 110 patients in this retrospective study, which had radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck with a total of 450 dental extractions after radiotherapy.
According to the tested results of patients who had taken PVe for a mean of 12 (24) weeks preoperatively and 14 (18) weeks postoperatively, PVe treatment in external beam therapy was given in 92.72% of the patients, and 7.27% and 40% of the patients received intensity-modulated radiotherapy combination of chemotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy, induced the development of ORN only in 2 patients.
Compared to untreated patients were lower than that normally associated with dental extractions in irradiated patients.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "In patients undergoing dental extractions, after receiving radiotherapy of head and neck region, combination therapy of pentoxifylline and tocopherol are sufficiently effective".
Taken together, tocopherols used in combination with other medications may reduce the risk of radiotherapy side effects in the development of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw in head and neck cancer patients. pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
