#Onions Intake Daily and Regularly Are Associated with A Reduced Risk of #StomachCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

Stomach cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach.

Depending on the location of the cancer that starts the malignancy, stomach cancer can be classified into
* Adenocarcinoma arose from the glands in the mucosa, including
** Superficial spreading
It is an early stage of cancer and tends to be less aggressive.

** Polyploid
Cancer grows in a pattern like a polyp and is less aggressive.

** Infiltrating
If cancer grows in infiltrating pattern into the stomach wall and is more aggressive.

** Linitis plastica
Cancer grows diffusivity throughout the whole wall of the stomach.
Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

* Lymphomas
Cancer of the lymphocytes originating from the stomach behaves much like lymphomas of the other parts of the body but adenocarcinoma

* Sarcomas
The cancer originated from the connected tissue of the stomach and behaves much like sarcomas of the other parts of the body but adenocarcinoma.

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of stomach cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive effects of Allium vegetables (onions, garlic, shallots, leeks, chives, and so forth) on gastric cancer risk.

The study includes the research of MEDLINE studies of Allium vegetable consumption and gastric cancer published in any language, from January 1, 1966, to September 1, 2010.
19 case-control and 2 cohort studies, of 543,220 subjects. were selected in the analysis. Onion and other allium vegetable consumption in large amounts reduced the risk for gastric cancer with an odds ratio of 0.54 in the comparison of the highest and lowest consumption groups.

More precisely, an increment of 20 g/day of Allium vegetables consumed (approximately the average weight of 1 garlic bulb) showed a summary odds ratio of 0.91 based on case-control studies from the dose-response meta-analysis.

These results strongly suggested that regular consumption of onion has an inverse association with the risk of stomach cancer in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, the risk of stomach cancer was reduced proportionally to the amount of onion intake regularly.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Butterbur Processes Anti #SeasonalAllergicRhinitis Activity, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Butterbur may be considered an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis, some scientists suggested.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is a condition of inflammation of the nasal passages as a result of seasonal allergic effects.

Most cases of rhinitis are caused by the immune system's overreaction to pollen, mold, animal dander, or dust, the body releases chemicals.

Most people with acute allergic rhinitis are experiencing symptoms of sneezing, itchiness, and a blocked or runny nose.

However, some people may have chronic allergic rhinitis, because they're sensitive to all seasonal allergens, including tree or grass pollen.

Most acute allergic rhinitis does not require medical attention, however, if your acute allergic rhinitis lasts for several months and disrupts your daily activity, you may want to check with your doctor to rule out other possibilities.

Long-term untreated allergic rhinitis may induce complications of nasal polyps, sinusitis, and middle ear infections.

Most cases of allergic rhinitis can be treated with counter medicine, including non-sedating antihistamines and nasal passage spray with a saltwater solution.

In a severe case, a stronger medication, such as a nasal spray containing corticosteroids can be helpful.

Please make sure that you know all the side effects of corticosteroids for preventive measures.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetlands, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The Chemical ingredients of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene, and ethylene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.

In the study to re-examine the recent literature regarding the alternative therapies for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, Dr. Man LX, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, found that although there are several studies that report beneficial effects of Butterbur for treating allergic rhinitis. additional insight into the mechanisms of action, short-term and long-term effects, and adverse events are necessary before herbal medicine can be integrated into the general treatment armamentarium of allergic rhinitis.

Dr. Guo R, the lead author in the study to investigate the efficacy of herbal medicines for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) launched a search in the 5 electronic databases published before and on November 8, 2005.

The guideline and criteria were set to only include double-blind randomized clinical trials (RCTs), which tested a herbal medicine against a placebo or an active comparator, in patients with AR, and evaluated clinically relevant outcomes.

Study selection, data extraction, and evaluation of methodological quality were performed independently by 2 reviewers.

16 eligible RCTs, testing 10 different herbal products against a placebo or an active comparator, were included.

Out of 16 selected studies, Six RCTs studied suggested that Petasites hybridus (butterbur) extract is superior to a placebo or similarly effective compared with nonsedative antihistamines for intermittent AR.

In the final report of the study, the doctors wrote, "There is encouraging evidence suggesting that P hybridus may be an effective herbal treatment for seasonal (intermittent) AR".

These results suggested that herbal Butterbur may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis without inducing serious side effects.

#Banana's Hot Extracts Inhibit Bacteria Against the Risk of #InfectiousDiseases, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food that processes a potential effect to improve the function of the immune system against infectious micro-pathogens, some studies suggested.

The immune system is the body's defense against infectious organisms and other invaders, by activating the systematic immune response.

In the acute phase of infection, macrophages, the first line of immune defenses stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to protect the injured or damaged tissue against foreign invasion.

However, overproduction of the proinflammatory cytokines can cause damage to the healthy cells and improper healing with the formation of scars.

Immune system disorders are chronic conditions caused by the abnormal under-activity or over-activity of the immune system.

In an overactive immune system or autoimmune disorder, the immune white blood cells mistakenly attack and damage the bodily tissue.

The underactive immune disorders are also known as immune deficiency diseases, weakening the immune ability to fight invaders, and increasing the risk of infections.

Dr. Wypych TP, the lead author in the study "The Impact of Diet on Immunity and Respiratory Diseases" wrote, "the "diet hypotheses," pointing to the importance of changes in our dietary habits" and "the interplay between the Western diet, microbiota, and inflammatory conditions".

In other words, the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, a lot of red meats, processed foods, and less in fruits and vegetables may play an important role in either weakening the immune system or causing an overactive immune system in the facilitation of the onset of autoimmune diseases.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

In examining the effect of the hot extracts isolated from the fruit peel of a banana on human health researchers at a joint study led by the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology launched an evaluation to observe the antibacterial activity from aquatic animals, and immunostimulating potential, disease resistance and anti-hypothermal stress in giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii.

The injection of banana hot extracts demonstrated a strong activity against 1 Gram-positive and 3 Gram-negative pathogens, including Lactococcus garvieae, Photobacteria damsella.

Prawn received BPE via injection at 1-6 μg (g prawn)(-1) significantly enhanced the immunity through the increased total hemocyte count (THC), hyaline cell (HC), granular cell (GC), phenoloxidase (PO) activity and phagocytic activity against L. garvieae from 3 to 6 days.

The extracts also significantly increased clearance efficiency against L. garvieae and significantly decreased the coagulation time of prawns from 1 to 6 days and levels of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

The survival rates of Macrobrachium rosenbergii injected with BPE at concentrations of 1, 3, and 6 μg (g prawn)(-1) were significantly higher than those injected with saline control after challenge with L. garvieae for 4-6 days, and the respective relative survival percentages of prawn were 28.6%, 38.1%, and 47.8%, respectively at 6 days, an indication of the improved immune system against the attack of pathogens.

These results suggested that BPE may be a pharmaceutical candidate to be used as a bacteriostat, immunostimulant, and physiological regulator through enhancing immunity, physiological responses, and resistance against infectious stimuli.

Additionally, in the evaluate the antagonistic mechanisms of Lactobacillus plantarum CIF17AN2 (an infant isolate), saba starch (banana), and their synbiotic combination against Salmonella Typhimurium SA2093, researchers found that

* The L. plantarum CIF17AN2 exhibited anti-Salmonella mechanisms through the secretion of antimicrobial compounds, adhesion ability, and competitive adhesion to mucin on the HT-29 cell line.

* The effects of Lactobacillus plantarum CIF17AN2 on the Salmonella inhibition were significantly reduced in the presence of human fecal microflora.

* The combination of saba starch with L. plantarum CIF17AN2 showed the greatest inhibition against Sal. Typhimurium SA2093 in the colon model.

* The enhancement of anti-Salmonella activity due to the addition of saba starch corresponded a significant decrease in pH and an increase of lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids.

These results suggested that banana starch can be used alone or combined with other ingredients for the treatment of Salmonella T. infection.

Taken together, bananas may be considered a function in enhancing the immune function against microorganisms, which cause infectious diseases, depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies in humans.

#Persin found in #Avocado Inhibit the Risk of #BreastCancer via Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis Induction in Vivo and Vitro, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Avocado may be considered a potentially functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.

Breast cancer is a medical condition that starts on the surface of the inner lining of breast tissue in the early stage. At this stage, a small lump may be found when touched.

The 5 years survival rate at this stage is 100%.

However, at the later stage, malignant cancers cell can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The lifetime risk for a woman to develop breast cancer is 1/8 in the US.

The epidemiological studies suggested that women who carry the mutated gene BRAC1 and 2 are associated with a substantially increased risk of the disease onset.

Men who carry the mutated gene BRCA2 have a 7% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.

Sadly, women who carry the abnormal BRCA1 orBRCA2 gene have about a 60% risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes, compared to only 12.5% for other women.

In a comment of the study published on June 20 in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dr. García-Closas, M.D., Dr.P.H., deputy director of NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, who was not involved in the research. said, “This study has confirmed estimates of the risk of developing cancer for women who are mutation carriers—that confirmation is reassuring for both women and the healthcare team who make important care decisions.”

Therefore, suggestions to these women may include intensive early surveillance, use of chemoprevention, and prophylactic surgery may be necessary for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Avocados are a commercially valuable fruit and are cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world, it is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and is native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

Chemical constituents of avocado include

The fruit contains campesterol, high amounts of β-sitosterol (average 76.4 mg/100 g); fatty acids (approximately 60% monounsaturated, 20% saturated, and 20% unsaturated); high amounts of glutathione (27.7 mg/100 g); approximately 2% protein; 6–9% carbohydrates and sugars (glucose, fructose, d-mannoheptulose, a taloheptulose, and an alloheptulose); two bitter substances (1-acetoxy-2,4-dihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene and 1,2,4-trihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene); carnitine; proanthocyanidins; persenones A and B.

Persin, the toxic chemical compound found in the fruits and leaves of avocado inhibited the human breast cancer cell line, in the testing of synthetic analogs of the avocado-produced toxin persin by activating the program cells death pathway.

When using combined with tamoxifen, the small amounts of tamoxifen needed to perform similar chemo effects, thus reducing the toxicity to the healthy cells that are normally killed by the presence of tamoxifen.

Futhermore, in the study to examine the anticancer properties of Persea declinata (Bl.) Kosterm bark methanolic crude extract (PDM), researchers at the University of Malaya launched an investigation to test the PDM in the exhibition of antiproliferative effect in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells.

Application of the PDM exhibited a potent antiproliferative effect in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, with an IC50 value of 16.68 µg/mL after 48 h of treatment.

Injection of PDM caused cell cycle arrest and subsequent apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, as seen by increased population at the G0/G1 phase, higher lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and DNA fragmentation, the indications of cancer cell apoptosis.

Additional analysis suggested that PDM elevated the expression of ROS in the induction of cancer cell death through cytotoxicity observed by the perturbation of mitochondrial membrane potential, cell permeability, and activation of caspases-3/7, in the execution phase of apoptosis.

The results of cancer cell apoptosis can be observed through the increased expression of the proapoptotic molecule, Bax, but decreased expression of prosurvival proteins, Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, in a dose-dependent manner after PDM administration.

The finding strongly suggested that PDM isolated from avocado could inhibit proliferation in MCF-7 cells via cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction.

Taken together, avocado may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of the avocado anti-breast cancer possibilities.

#Tomato Rich in Carotenoids Inhibits #Hyperglycemia by Normalizing the Levels of HbA1, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia found in patients with diabetes is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose in the bloodstream.
Most cases of hyperglycemia are a result of poor diabetic control including unhealthy food and physical activity choices, medical conditions, and nondiabetes medications, particularly in people who frequent skipping or not taking enough glucose-lowering medication.

* Foot Complications are the condition caused by nerve damage that controls the leg, leading to numbness and severe pain in the feet. in the blood but also can cause kidney failure.

* Kidney disease is a condition that can reduce the function of the kidney in filtering the waste in the blood.

* Hypertension is a condition of high blood pressure that can lead to an increase in the risk heart attack, stroke, and eye problems.

* Stroke caused by abnormally high blood pressure and high blood glucose.

* Gastroparesis is a condition caused by the reduced function of vagus nerves that control the movement of food.

Some researchers suggested by the change of lifestyle and moderate exercise accompanied by taking your medicine daily, hyperglycemia is preventable in diabetes.

The Mayo Clinic Staff in the article " Diabetes management: How lifestyle, daily routine affect blood sugar", wrote, "Healthy eating is a cornerstone of healthy living — with or without diabetes. But if you have diabetes, you need to know how foods affect your blood sugar levels".

"Physical activity is another important part of your diabetes management plan. When you exercise, your muscles use sugar (glucose) for energy. Regular physical activity also helps your body use insulin more efficiently".

And, "Insulin and other diabetes medications are designed to lower your blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone aren't sufficient for managing diabetes. But the effectiveness of these medications depends on the timing and size of the dose. Medications you take for conditions other than diabetes also can affect your blood sugar levels".

In other words, by following a healthy lifestyle including diet, moderate exercise, and taking the required medicines hyperglycemia is controllable.

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a potential compound or whole food for the treatment of hyperglycemia, researchers examined the relationship between hyperglycemia and both serum carotenoids and the intake of vegetables and fruits.

The study induced 133 subjects with a history of diabetes mellitus or hyperglycemia diagnosed using a 5.6% cutoff value for hemoglobin A1c (High HbA1c group, n = 151) recruited from among inhabitants of a rural area in Hokkaido, Japan.

High HbA1c between 5.7% and 6.4% is an indication of a higher risk of diabetes.
According to the return of a questionnaire administered by public health nurses on the Intake frequencies of vegetables and fruits,* The odds ratio (OR) for high HbA1c was 0.49 on high intake frequency of carrot and pumpkin and the OR for DM was 1.21 (95% Cl: 0.79-1.84)
* There are no significant relationships between high HbA1c and intake frequencies of other vegetables and fruits.

* The ORs on high serum levels of alpha- and beta-carotenes, lycopene, beta-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin, and lutein were 0.38 (0.22-0.65), 0.35 (0.21-0.59), 0.57 (0.35-0.93), 0.35 (0.20-0.59), and 0.88 (0.54-1.46) for high HbA1c, respectively.

In other words, tomatoes may have a strong effect against the onset of hyperglycemia by normalizing the levels of HbA1c.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "Intake of vegetables and fruits rich in carotenoids might be a protective factor against hyperglycemia".

Taken together, tomatoes may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthy Food #Onion's #Quercetin and #OnioninA (ONA) Exert #Cardioprotection Against the Risk of #CardiovascularDisease, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of diseases associated with blood vessels caused by narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack and stroke.

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ pumping blood through the blood vessels to nourish the cells, tissues, and organs in the body.

Heart disease is a class of conditions associated with reduced function of the heart due to damage to the structure, including the heart muscle.

According to the statistics provided by the WHO, CVD is the number 1 cause of death globally. In other words, 31% of all global deaths are CVD.

Stroke is an emergency event caused by a blood vessel in the brain ruptures that lead to deprive oxygen in the brain cells causing the death of neurons.

According to the statistics, stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. Every year, approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke. About 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks.

Believe it or not, 3/4 cases of stroke are in patients over 65 years of age.

There is no single cause of CVD. The most prevalent factors associated with the risk of CVD are
aging, male gender, ethnicity, smoking, metabolic syndrome including high blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol, physical inactivity, overweight, and obesity.

However, some researchers suggested that the increased metabolic syndrome at the alarming rate correlated to the high rate of CVD onset over the past few decades probably is associated with the promotion of the Western diet in the US.

Dr. Mirmiran P, the lead scientist wrote, " Two major dietary patterns, Western and traditional, were identified. During a mean of 4.7 ± 1.4 years of follow-up, 57 participants experienced CVD-related events... In the fully adjusted model, we observed an increased risk of CVD-related events in the highest compared to the lowest tertile category of Western dietary pattern score (HR = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.03-4.18, P for trend = 0.01)

And, " the Western dietary pattern, characterized by higher loads of processed meats, salty snacks, sweets, and soft drinks, is a dietary risk factor for CVD in the Iranian population".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the Allium species, their extracts, and the chemical constituents for possible effects on cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Quercetin, a type of flavonoid found in onion-induced cardioprotection against the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, including ischemia-reperfusion injury, cardiotoxicity, and hypertension.

In patients with atherosclerotic disease, certain formulations of garlic and/or onion protected the arteries by inhibiting the formation of plaques, and other unfavorable parameters associated with the disease onset.

Garlic and onion also exerted a significant activity against blood coagulability, a condition found in patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Risk factors associated with metabolic syndromes such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia were also inhibited by the administration of garlic and onion in vitro, vivo, and a number of small-size human studies.

However, acute and chronic ingestion of large amounts of these plants or their extracts may cause liver and kidney toxicity.

Taken altogether, onion processed with a higher amount of Onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cucumber's Freeze-Dried Aqueous #Extract That inhibits Esophageal Cancer by Inducing Cell Cycle Arrest and Cytotoxicity, Acccording to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Esophageal cancer is a chronic and medical condition arisen from the esophagus due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of esophageal cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the esophagus between the throat and the stomach. At the early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic.

As the tumor continues to grow, patients may experience symptoms of difficulty swallowing, persistent chest pain and pressure, pain-burning sensation, coughing or hoarseness, and heartburn.

If you persistently experience chronic acid reflux, accompanied by some of the aforementioned symptoms, you should check with your doctor immediately to rule out the possibility of esophageal cancer.

Some patients may also vomit blood if the tumor has pressed onto the nearby blood vessels.

At the advanced stage, the primary cancer cell can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 17,650 adults (13,750 men and 3,900 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer this year, accounting for 1% of cancers diagnosed.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, some researchers suggested patients with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are found to have a strong implication on the disease onset.

Dr. Shaheen N, the lead scientist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hil, wrote, "Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a risk factor for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, rare cancer whose incidence is increasing".

However, "Strong evidence supports the association of GERD and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus; however, the risk of cancer in any given individual with GERD is low".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to discover a potential ingredient for the treatment of esophageal cancer, researchers investigated the possible cytotoxic effect of freeze-dried aqueous extract of E. elaterium fruit on KYSE30 (human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma).

The study included the free dried aqueous extract of the fruits of E. elaterium incubated for 24, 48, and 72 h. on KYSE30 cancer cell lines.

The extracts showed a significant effect in the inhibition of KYSE30 cell line at IC(50) values at concentrations of 500, 150, and 125 μg/ml after 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively.

According to the EB/AO staining, the extract showed an increase in apoptotic cells of the KYSE30 cell line.

Furthermore, the free-dried aqueous extract of the fruits of E. elaterium exerted a significant increase in cell density at the G2/M phase before inducing cell cycle arrest, according to the cell cycle analysis.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested that the freeze-dried aqueous extract of E. elaterium fruit has a cytotoxic effect on esophageal cancer cell lines via the induction of apoptosis.

Dr. Bohlooli S, the lead scientist wrote, " It seems that several compounds are possibly responsible for the cytotoxic effect of the extract".

In other words, several compounds in the extract worked synergistically to exhibit cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cell line.

Taken together, cucumber may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of esophageal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
