#Broccoli's BCE-I Mainly Consisted of Galactose and Arabinose Exhibits Anti-Metastatic Activities by Exhibiting the Natural Killer (NK) Cells, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ.
Most cases of invasive cancer can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Institute, between n 2011–2015, the number of new cases of cancer is 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases).

The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year.

In cancer cells, due to the alternation of DNA, can grow indefinitely.

Cancer cell metastasis is the process in that cancer cells break away from the primary site and travel through the blood or fluid circulation and form new tumors (metastatic tumors) in other parts of the body, similar to those of primary cancer.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

Through the expression of the lines of defense, depending on the stage of pathogenic invasion, the innate immune response protects the body via a different set of interactions.

In the acute phase of infection, the macrophages in the immune system stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines at the site of the damage. The inflammatory cytokines not only play a critical role in stopping the stimuli from entering the body but also speeds up wound healing through growth factors.

The innate immune system also can destroy damaged cells such as cancer cells through the T cell activation of B cells which in turn stimulates the production of a protein associated with the production of antibody p53.

Some researchers suggested immune system also can kill cancer cells by reacting to activating cytokines (IFN-α/β, IL-12, IL-15, IL-18, IL-21) produced by tumor cells or by other immune cells stimulated by tumor cells.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

In finding natural food for the prevention and treatment of cancer proliferation, researchers examined the anti-metastatic activities of polysaccharides in broccoli, including BCE-I mainly consisted of galactose and arabinose, whereas BCE-II mainly consisted of galacturonic acid and rhamnose, and BCE-III mainly consisted of rhamnose and galactose.
According to the results of the analysis,
* BCE-I showed the greatest enhancement of the pro-inflammatory proteins such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-12, and IL-6 secretion by stimulating murine peritoneal macrophages in the immune response.

* Furthermore, intravenous (i.v.) administration of BCE-I enhanced the lethal activity on YAC-1 tumor cells significantly and dose-dependently in an ex vivo by exhibiting the natural killer (NK) cells.

* In lung metastasis of Colon26-M3.1 carcinoma cells, prophylactic i.v. and oral administration of BCE-I significantly and dose-dependently inhibited lung metastatic activity.

In other words, the inhibitory activity of BCE-1 on lung metastasis are depending on the NK cell function in GM1 activity.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " BCE-I has potent antitumor metastatic activity, and that its anti-metastatic activity has relevance to the stimulation of NK and other immune cells".

Taken together, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for inhibiting cancer cell metastasis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene Extract Combined with Serenoa Repens, Selenium, + Bromelain and Methylsulfonylmethane Extract Inhibit the Onset of Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Prostatitis is a condition associated with the inflammation of the prostate and the areas around the prostate.
Chronic bacterial prostatitis is a medical condition of prostatitis induced by a bacterial infection.

According to the statistics provided by the American Family Physician, approximately 8.2 percent of men in the US are living with prostatitis. The conditions account for 8 percent of visits to urologists, and up to 1 percent of visits to primary care physicians.

Believe it or not, in 2000, prostatitis has cost over $84 million, including the charge of diagnosis and treatment.

The most common symptoms of prostatitis are painful, difficult and/or frequent urinating, groin pain, rectal pain, abdominal pain and/or low back pain, fever, chills, and body aches.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of urethral discharge, painful ejaculation or sexual dysfunction, and blood in the urine.

The exact causes of prostatitis are not identified, some researchers suggested that nerve damage in the lower urinary tract caused by surgery or trauma to the area has been found to induce prostatitis in patients.

Conventionally, most cases of prostatitis are treated by antibiotics in cases of infection, alpha-blockers to relax the bladder neck, and muscle fibers, and anti-inflammatory medicine to ease pain and discomforts.

Dr. JAMES J. STEVERMER, the lead scientist in the treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis at the University of Missouri–Columbia School of Medicine, wrote, "If the patient responds to therapy, antibiotics are continued for at least three to four weeks, although some men require treatment for several months. A patient who does not respond might be evaluated for chronic nonbacterial prostatitis, in which nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, alpha-blocking agents, anticholinergic agents, or other therapies may provide symptomatic relief".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of prostatitis, researchers evaluated the efficacy and the safety of a combination of Serenoa repens, selenium, and lycopene extract + bromelain and methylsulfonylmethane extract associated with levofloxacin in patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP).

The study included all patients with a clinical and instrumental diagnosis of CBP, admitted to a single Urological Institution from March to June 2015 were enrolled in this phase III study.

All selected patients were randomized into two groups, Group A (n=40)received levofloxacin 500 mg o.d. for 14 days associated with lycopene and methylsulfonylmethane; Group B (n=39) received levofloxacin (500 mg o.d. for 14 days) only.

According to the results from the follow-up (T1), the NIH Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (CPSI), and International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS) of group A were significantly lower compared to group B.
In other words, group A showed milder symptoms compared to group B.

Furthermore, the symptomatic and microbiological recurrence was also significantly lower in group A n=1) compared to group B (n=7).

Moreover, these change between groups was continued at the second follow-up visit (T2) observed by the questionnaire results.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The combination of Serenoa repens, selenium, lycopene + bromelain, and methylsulfonylmethane extracts improved the clinical efficacy of levofloxacin in patients affected by CBP without the development of side effects".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered an adjunct therapy for the treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Strawberries Exert Neuro-Protective Activity by Inhibiting the Expression of Free Radicals, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

StrawberriesStrawberries are a genius of Fragaria × ananassa and belong to the family Rosaceae. They have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

Neuroprotective effects are defined as an event that protects the central nervous system (CNS) by relatively preserving neuronal structure and/or function.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

Many studies have been carried out by scientists to explore the effective agent which has the potential to prevent or slow disease progression and secondary injuries by halting or at least slowing the loss of neurons.

In spite of mitochondrial oxidative stress (MOS) as a major factor in the underlying pathology of many neurodegenerative diseases, chemical constituent anthocyanins suppress MOS-induced apoptosis by preserving mitochondrial GSH and inhibiting cardiolipin oxidation and mitochondrial fragmentation.

Also in the study of Berry fruit supplementation, polyphenolic compounds found in berry fruits, such as blueberries and strawberries, may exert their beneficial effects either through their ability to lower oxidative stress and inflammation or directly by altering the signaling involved in neuronal communication, calcium buffering ability, neuroprotective stress shock proteins, plasticity, PubMed and stress signaling pathways.

Dr. Richardson JS. indicated that pharmacological agents that protect damaged neurons are not ready yet for widespread clinical use, neuron damaging oxidative stress can be kept in check by ensuring adequate dietary sources of antioxidants with little or no scientific evidence, but the consumption of high-antioxidant foods, such as blueberries and strawberries, is appealing to most people regardless of any neuroprotective potential.

#Onion Peel #HydroalcoholicExtract (OPE) Exerts Vasorelaxant Effects Against the Risk of CardiovascularDisease, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Vasorelaxant is a term that refers to the reduction of vascular tension.
Vascular disease is a disease associated with an abnormal condition of the blood vessels, affecting the blood flow to the body.

There are many types of vascular disease associated with vascular constriction, including stroke, peripheral artery disease (PAD), a disease caused by reduced blood flow to the limbs, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), carotid artery disease (CAD), arteriovenous malformation (AVM), pulmonary embolism (blood clots) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

According to the statistics, approximately 8.5 million people in the US are living with Peripheral artery disease (PAD), one of the most common types of vascular disease.

There are no single causes of vascular disease. However, diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high levels of fats in the blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides), smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, and physical inactivity are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with the condition.

Some researchers suggested that the rise of aging patients with vascular disease may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades in inducing a large population with obesity and Type II diabetes in the US.

Dr. Morteza Mowlaie, the lead scientist wrote, " Significant positive association between left ventricular hypertrophy and plaque score and also a significant positive association between left ventricular hypertrophy with the presence of chest pain was found (p<0.05)"

And, "Association of diabetes mellitus with the presence of chest pain was positive. A positive correlation between hypertension with plaque score was demonstrated too (p<0.05). Also, an inverse association of plaque score with left ventricular ejection fraction was detected too (p<0.05)".

In other words, patients with diabetes are associated with vascular disease, that induces similar symptoms of atherosclerosis such as left ventricular hypertrophy, chest pain, and hypertension in plaque score

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the investigate the effect of onion (Allium cepa) peel hydroalcoholic extract (OPE) on rat hypertension induced by a high-fructose diet and aorta contractility.

Three groups of rats were given fructose (10% WN/V) in drinking water for 6 weeks but the control group received tap water and the hypertensive groups received saline or OPE at 200, 400, and 800 mg kg(-1) daily for the last 3 weeks by gavage.

OPE reduces aorta contractions induced by KCl or Phe in a concentration-dependent manner through its vasorelaxant effects.

L-NAME (100 microM), methylene blue (10 microM), and indomethacin (10 microM) Inhibited nitric oxide, cGMP, and prostaglandin synthesis associated with a decrease of vasodilation also inhibited by the administration of OPE.

Furthermore, OPE did not change heart rate but reduced hypertension induced by fructose after 3 weeks of the experimental period.

The efficacy of OPE vasorelaxant activity was attributed to the inhibition of hypertension by extracting quercetin content, antioxidant activity, and inhibiting vascular smooth muscle cell's Ca2+ influx associated with the change of vascular diameter.

Taken together, onion may be considered a remedy for the promotion of vasorelaxant activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Potatoes Inhibit Markers Associated with the Liver Injury and Damage, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Fibrosis is a condition characterized by overly exuberant wound healing causing excessive connective tissue builds up in the organ tissues In other words, hepatic fibrosis is a portion of the liver that was affected by scar formation.

The exact causes of fibrosis are unknown. However, certain risk factors such as repeated liver injury caused by a virus infection, and a blockage in the bile ducts are found to elaborate on the onset of fibrosis.

The 2 most common types of fibrosis in the human body are
* Renal fibrosis is a progressive condition caused by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix including collagen, enzymes, and glycoproteins which provided structural and biochemical support of surrounding the renal cells during aging and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

According to the statistics, CKD and renal fibrosis affect approximately half of the adults age 70 and over and 10% of the world's population.

In other words, renal fibrosis is a direct consequence caused by the inability of the kidney to regenerate after injury, leading to the formation of renal scars that results in a progressive loss of renal function.
Most cases of renal fibrosis ultimately lead to end-stage renal failure and a need for dialysis or kidney transplantation.
* Liver fibrosis is a chronic liver disease due to liver scars overwhelmingly building up in the connective tissue in the liver.

A severe case of hepatic fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, affecting the liver function in filtering the blood. In the US, over 4.5 million people are affected by liver cirrhosis, leading to the death of 12/100,000 of the population every year.

The most common causes of liver fibrosis are excessive alcohol drinking and infection with the hepatitis virus.

Long-term untreated liver fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, a condition of severe scarring of the liver and life-threatening liver disease.

Potato is the genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae. the root veggie is a good source of protein.
According to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. Potato now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-fibrotic activity researchers examined the effect of APPH, a potato protein hydrolysate on a high-fat diet (HFD) associated liver damage.

The study included six-week-old male hamsters that were randomly separated into six groups (n = 8) as control, HFD (HFD fed obese), L-APPH (HFD + 15 mg/kg/day of APPH), M-APPH (HFD + 30 mg/kg/day), H-APPH (HFD + 75 mg/kg/day of APPH) and PB (HFD + 500 mg/kg/day of probucol) with HFD fed hamsters were administered with APPH 50 days through oral gavage.

According to the results of the analysis,* Hamsters fed with a high-fat diet showed symptoms of liver damage as measured from serum stress markers like alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels.
* Furthermore, HFD also modulated the expression of survival and apoptosis proteins in the hamster liver.

* Moreover, the HFD groups showed elevated levels of fibrosis markers in the liver correlated with the increase in the levels of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinases (pERK1/2) induced liver cell differentiation in the HFD-mediated liver damage.

* The administration of a 50-day long supplementation of APPH effectively ameliorated the effects of HFD.

* APPH treatment reduced the effect of HFD on the apoptosis and fibrosis markers considerably and provided hepato-protection.

Collectively, researchers said, "APPH can, therefore, be considered as an efficient therapeutic agent to ameliorate high-fat diet-related liver damages".

Taken altogether, potato may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis and damage induced fibrosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Papaya #LeafExtract Inhibits the Parameters Associated with the Onset of #HighBloodCholesterol, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Papaya may be considered a functional food for high blood cholesterol by inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or from the intake of dietary sources plays an important role in the building of cell membranes in transmitting information among cells and making steroid hormones, fat-soluble vitamins, and bile acids for digestive system needs.

There are 2 major types of cholesterol,
* Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are also known as“bad” cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol can block the arteries, causing heart disease. and

* High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are known as“good” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol removes bad cholesterol from other parts of your body and carries them back to the liver.

The healthy ratio of total cholesterol is 4 (bad cholesterol)/1(good cholesterol). If your total blood cholesterol is lower than 4, you are considered a have a healthy level of blood cholesterol.

The Mayo Clinic in the article talking about diet and lifestyle effects in high blood cholesterol wrote, "Poor diet. Eating saturated fat, found in animal products, and trans fats, found in some commercially baked cookies and crackers, can raise your cholesterol level. Foods that are high in cholesterol, such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, will also increase your total cholesterol".

Therefore, by changing your diet pattern to more in fruits, whole grains,s and vegetables and less saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food, and following a healthy lifestyle with moderate exercise, you should be free of the syndrome of high blood cholesterol, regardless of your present conditions.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belongs to the family Caricaceae, and is native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico several centuries

In the reaffirming of the traditional use of Ficus carica (papaya) for the treatment of several metabolic syndrome-related health problems, researchers at the University of Florida launched an investigation to examine the preventive effects of a Ficus carica (FC) leaf extract on hyperlipidemia in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese male rats.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats (180-200 g) were fed with a regular diet, HFD, or an HFD + oral treatment of either 50 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg of FC or 30 mg/kg pioglitazone for six weeks.

In the final report, researchers found that
* Oral administration of FC exerts a significant anti-hyperlipidemia effect by lowering triglycerides (TG), interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, and elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the tested animal.
* The effects of FC on lipid parameters are more pronounced in treated rats than those of the positive control pioglitazone.
* FC treatment group also significantly lowered the atherogenic index (AI) and the coronary risk index (CRI). the indications of the decreased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.

Dr. Joerin L, the lead author said, "Preventive treatment with FC significantly improved the lipid profile and decreased adipogenic risk factors in HFD rats most likely mediated through an increase in HDL-C levels".

Additionally, in the evaluate the effects of the fruit and latex of papaya used in folk medicine for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experience to examine the anti-hyperlipidemic effect of the ether- and water-soluble fractions of C. papaya ethanol extract in olive oil-induced hyperlipidemic rats.

The extract and fractions were administered orally at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight in rats. Olive oil (5 mL/kg oral dose) was administered 30 min after treatment.
Oral administration of papaya extract in a dose-dependently inhibited the total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) level, and significantly increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level.

Papaya also exerted a significant acute effect on HDL levels and TC and TG elevation induced by olive oil.

These results suggested that papaya extract and water fraction showed protective action by increasing the HDL cholesterol level and lowering the levels of HDL level and TC and TG elevation in hyperlipidemic rats.

Taken together, papaya may be considered a functional food for the treatment of high blood cholesterol.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of papaya antihyperlipidemic possibility.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Increases the Levels of Antioxiant Against the Onset of Oxidative Stress, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

Oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

Dr. Ercal N, the lead author in the study of the relationship between toxic metals and oxidative stress, wrote, "Antioxidants may play an important role in abating some hazards of heavy metals. In order to prove the importance of using antioxidants in heavy metal poisoning, pertinent biochemical mechanisms for metal-induced oxidative stress".

There is no single cause of oxidative stress. Some researchers suggested that a number of factors can facilitate the onset of oxidative stress, including cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.

Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress present in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity.

Certain chronic diseases are found to be associated with oxidative stress, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and stroke.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound that processes the antioxidant activity, researchers examined the acetylcholine esterase (AChE) inhibitory and antioxidant potential of Ashwagandha root extract (ARE

Ashwagandha root extract (ARE) in in-vitro and ex-vivo models showed a strong free radical scavenging effect by preventing protein degradation.

In rat lymphocytes, ARE pre-treatment not only protects the immune cells' integrity against s against H2 O2 -induced oxidative damage including DNA fragmentation, and significantly decreased the activities of key antioxidant enzymes such as peroxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.

Furthermore, the decreased and increased content of glutathione and malondialdehyde induced by the injection of H2O2 has also reversed, indicating the remedy to suppress hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress.

Collectively, researchers said, "The study provides the scientific basis of pleiotropic functions of Ashwagandha".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of chronic diseases induced by oxidative stress, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study
