#Healthy Legume #Pintobeans Show A Strong Effect in Lowering Non-HDL Cholesterol Levels, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol is a waxy substance carried around by lipoproteins, that do not mix with water-based blood in our body.
Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls and make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help to digest fat, particularly in the building of strong cell membranes. However, too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

There are 2 types of cholesterol. The low-density lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol which performs the aforementioned activity in the right levels and the high-density lipoprotein which returns cholesterol back to the liver for reuse.

However, overexpression of cholesterol can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to arterial narrowing, wall stiffness, and hardening, some major causes of heart disease and stroke.

Although high blood cholesterol does not induce any symptoms, a prolonged period of uncontrolled high blood cholesterol can cause complications of chest pain, the early sign of coronary artery disease, heart attack,.... and stroke.

According to medical guidelines, the normal goal of non-HDL cholesterol levels should be 30 mg/dL higher than the LDL cholesterol level.

For example, if your non-HDL cholesterol level= LDL cholesterol.+ 30 mg/dL = 130 mg/dL and your HDL is 40 mg/dL = Non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio of 3.25, the ideal range of the ratio.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (LDL)/1 (HDL). If you have a number that lowers than 4, you have healthy blood cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia is one member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome, therefore, if you have a number that is higher than 4, your risk of cardiovascular is increased compared to people with healthy levels.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterol, scientists examined the changes in cholesterol metabolism in response to whole pinto beans (wPB) and their hulls (hPB) supplemented into a diet rich in saturated fat in hamsters.

The pinto bean is also known as the common bean, genus Phaseolus and the family Fabaceae. It has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish-beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.

The study included forty-four 9-wk-old male Golden Syrian hamsters that were randomly assigned to 4 diet groups (n = 11), including a 5% (wt:wt) fat diet [normal-fat diet (NF)], a 15% (wt:wt) fat diet [diet rich in saturated fat (HSF), saturated fatty acids accounted for 70% of total fatty acids], or HSF supplemented with 5% (wt:wt) wPB or 0.5% (wt:wt) hPB for 4 wk.

According to the plasma, liver, intestinal, and fecal samples that were collected to evaluate multiple cholesterol markers and gene targets,
* The plasma non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) concentration was significantly reduced in the wPB- and hPB-supplemented groups by 31.9 ± 3.5% and 53.6 ± 3.2%, respectively, compared to the HSF group (P < 0.01), to concentrations comparable with the NF group

* The wPB-supplemented hamsters had significantly lower liver cholesterol (45.1%, P < 0.001) and higher fecal cholesterol concentrations (94.8%, P = 0.001) than those of the HSF group.

* The expressions of hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (Hmgcr) and small intestinal acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase 2 (Acat2) associated with the elevation of blood cholesterol were significantly decreased in animals administered wPB (by 89.1% and 63.8%, respectively) and hPB (by 72.9% and 47.7%, respectively) compared to the HSF-fed counterparts (P < 0.05).

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Pinto beans remediated high cholesterol induced by HSF in male hamsters by decreasing hepatic cholesterol synthesis and intestinal cholesterol absorption, effects which were partially exerted by the hulls".

Taken altogether, Pinto beans may be considered s functional for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Potatoes Exert a Significant Anti-Inflammatory Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from foreign invasion.
Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Chronic inflammation also can be caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants, the major cause of oxidative stress.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, and DNA damage.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Potato is the genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae. The veggie is a good source of protein and according to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. It now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-inflammatory activity researchers examined the pharmacological potential of dehydrated potatoes on inflammation.

On the bioaccessible peptides that were fractionated on tested intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) under oxidative and inflammatory conditions,
* The tested peptide fractions demonstrated a significant inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-α release, and cycloxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression.

* The tested peptides also showed significant antioxidant activity against the inflammatory process by inhibiting the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from mitochondria, and nitrotyrosine formation, and increasing the antioxidant response by heme oxygenase-1 and superoxide dismutase expression.

* Moreover, the peptide fractions showed a significant increase in wound repair in IEC-6 activity through its anti-inflammatory property.

Collectively, researchers said, "The obtained results indicate the anti-inflammatory potential of dehydrated potatoes at the intestinal level".

Taken together, potatoes may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #DandelionRoot #Extract Inhibits Long Noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), Proliferation and Migration of Gastric Cancer Cells.According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.
The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight, loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

The causes of gastric cancer are debatable, but some researchers suggested that people with chronic
gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop the disease.

Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking.

According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and viruses, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists examined the effects of dandelion root extract (DRE) on gastric cancer.

According to the tested assays,
* Dandelion root extract (DRE) specifically and effectively suppresses proliferation and migration in human gastric cells without inducing toxicity in noncancerous cells.

* Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are known to promote tumorigenesis in many cancer types and are downregulated by the injection of DRE, including the lncRNA colon cancer-associated transcript-1 (CCAT1) in the promotion of tumor progression.

* More importantly, the downregulation of CCAT1 was found to inhibit the proliferation and migration of gastric cells.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "DRE exerted its function in GC cells partially through targeting CCAT1. This data will provide a basis on which further research in cancer treatment through DRE can be executed".

Taken together, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Broccoli' #Sulforaphane (SFN) Shows a Chemo-Preventive Effect on Cancer, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with the growth of cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Chemo-drugs are a class of conventional medicine used for the treatment of cancers. including 5-fluorouracil, 6-mercaptopurine, cytarabine, gemcitabine, and methotrexate.

Compared to other treatments, chemotherapy targets cancer's specific genes, proteins, or the tissue environment that contributes to cancer growth and survival.

Chemo drugs have been found to improve the survival rate of cancer patients. However, they also induce significant side effects.

The most common side effects of chemo-drugs are fatigue, hair loss, easy bruising, and bleeding. infection, anemia (low red blood cell counts) nausea and vomiting, appetite changes, and constipation.

The side effects of chemo drugs are the results of damage to the healthy blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, hair follicles, and cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system.

According to the American Cancer Society, some chemo drugs have also been found to damage cells in the heart, kidneys, bladder, lungs, and nervous system.

Chemoprevention is the use of a medication, vitamin, or supplement to prevent the initiation of cancer.

On finding a potential plant for the treatment of cancers, researchers compared the effects of
Brassica family of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli is a rich source of isothiocyanates, sulforaphane (SFN) as chemopreventive phytochemical.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

According to the differentiation, sulforaphane (SFN) exerted its potent chemopreventive agent based on its ability to target multiple mechanisms within the cell to control carcinogenesis.

More precisely, anti-inflammatory, pro-apoptotic, and modulation of histones are some of the more important and known mechanisms by which SFN demonstrates chemoprevention.

Furthermore, The effect of SFN on cancer stem cells is another area of interest that has been explored in recent years and may contribute to its chemopreventive properties.

Based on the results, researchers said, "In this paper, we briefly review structure, pharmacology and preclinical studies highlighting chemopreventive effects of SFN".

Taken together, broccoli consists of SFN may be considered a chemopreventive functional food, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#TopicalLeek Cream Processes Anti-Symptomatic Hemorrhoid Property Compared to Standard Medicines, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Hemorrhoids, also called piles are a common condition characterized by swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum.
Symptomatic hemorrhoidal tissues located above the dentate line are associated with the development of internal hemorrhoids that induce bleeding and prolapse.

The causes of hemorrhoids are unknown.

However, some researchers suggested that straining during bowel movements, a prolonged period of sitting due to the occupation that induces increased pressure on these veins are associated with the early onset of the condition.

In women, a pregnancy that causes pressure on the anus and swollen veins and lower rectum veins may also increase the risk of hemorrhoids.

According to statistics, a quarter of the adult population in the US has hemorrhoids developed at some point in their lives.

Most patients with hemorrhoids do not experience any symptoms. But in some infectious cases, hemorrhoids may induce symptoms of itching, discomfort, and bleeding.

Please be aware that some internal hemorrhoids can grow so large that they stick out of the anus. Prolapsed hemorrhoids, most of the time may require surgery to heal.

Dr. Seok-Gyu Song, the lead scientist wrote, "The traditional therapeutic strategies of medicine include surgical, as well as non-surgical, treatment. To alleviate symptoms caused by hemorrhoids, oral treatments, such as fiber, suppositories, and Sitz baths have been applied to patients".

And, "Other non-surgical treatments, such as infrared photocoagulation, injection sclerotherapy, and rubber band ligation have been used to fixate hemorrhoid's cushion. If non-surgical treatment has no effect, surgical treatments, such as a hemorrhoidectomy, procedure for prolapsed hemorrhoids, and transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization are used".

Leek is a genius of Allium, belongings to the vegetable family vegetable Alliacaea, the same as onion and garlic. Leeks are easy to grow from seed and usually reach maturity in the autumn months, and have few pest or disease problems.

In finding a potential plant for the treatment of swollen veins. researchers compared the effects of topical herbal formulations and Allium ampeloprasum subsp iranicum (Leek) anti-hemorrhoidal activity.

According to the results of 20 patients with symptomatic hemorrhoids that were randomly allocated to receive the topical leek extract cream or standard anti-hemorrhoid cream for 3 weeks,* There was a significant decrease in the grade of bleeding severity and defecation discomfort in both the leek and anti hemorrhoid cream groups after the intervention.
* There was no significant change in pain scores.

* There was no significant difference between the leek and anti-hemorrhoid cream groups with regard to mean changes in outcome measures.

Collectively, researchers said, "This pilot study showed that the topical use of leek cream can be as effective as a standard anti-hemorrhoid cream".

Taken together, leeks may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of symptomatic hemorrhoids, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lyophilized Stem Juice of #Banana Processes a Strong Hypoglycemic Effect on #Diabetes, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Unripe banana may be considered a functional for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, some scientists suggested.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose as the result of either cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system or immune
system mistakenly attacks the cells which produce insulin, leading to insulin resistance.

The death of beta cells in the pancreas is triggered by the massive overproduction of short strands of ribonucleic acid, known as microRNA (miR) 200. These results suggested that blocking miR-200 may guarantee the survival of beta cells, even ones under extreme stress.

In the case of the pancreas clogged up with fat accumulation, some researchers found that losing less than one gram of that fat through weight loss reverses diabetes.

Professor Taylor of Newcastle University said, “So if you ask how much weight you need to lose to make your diabetes go away, the answer is one gram! But that gram needs to be far from the pancreas. At present, the only way we have to achieve this is by calorie restriction by any means – whether by diet or an operation.

”In patients who had started with Type 2 diabetes, fat levels in the pancreas (pancreatic triglyceride) decreased by 1.2% over the 8 weeks. Very exact methods were needed to be able to measure this and a new method using a special MRI scan was developed. With an average pancreas for a person with Type 2 diabetes having a volume of 50 ml, this is the equivalent of around 0.6 grams of fat.

According to the study by ETH Zurich and the International Diabetes Foundation, there are over 380 million diabetics around the world. Approximately, by the year 2030, over half a billion people will be suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belonging to the family of the lily and the orchid.

In the study reaffirming the traditional use of bananas for the treatment of diabetes in India, researchers at the University College of Medical Sciences, Dilshad Garden launched an investigation to assess the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of the stem of the banana. In the experiment, diabetes was induced in rats by streptozotocin injection (45 mg/kg, i.p.). Diabetic rats were treated for 2 weeks with different doses of lyophilized stem juice of banana. (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) to select the most effective dose.

* The most effective dose of lyophilized stem juice of M. sapientum Linn (Banana) was 50 mg/kg.

* The four weeks treatment with this dose resulted in significant decreases in fasting and postprandial plasma glucose (FPG, PPG) levels.

* Serum insulin increased (P < 0.05) whereas HbA1c decreased (P < 0.05).

* Diabetes-induced changes to the lipid profile, muscle and liver glycogen, and enzyme activity (i.e. glucokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase, and HMG-CoA reductase) were restored near to normal levels by the application of banana.

These results suggested that lyophilized stem juice of banana (M. sapientum Linn) exhibits antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects.

Furthermore, in the study to find out the mechanism of the hypoglycemic effect of ethanol extract of banana pseudostem (EE) researchers suggested
* The ethanol extract of banana significantly inhibited mammalian intestinal α-glucosidases and yeast α-glucosidase.

* Oral administration (100-200 mg kg(-1) body weight) of EE significantly suppressed the maltose/glucose-induced postprandial plasma glucose elevation and wielded an antihyperglycaemic effect in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats.

Dr. Ramu R, the lead scientist said, "EE might exert an anti-diabetic effect by inhibition of α-glucosidases from the intestine, in turn suppressing the carbohydrate absorption into the bloodstream. Hence the results extend a foundation for the future prospects of the food-derived enzyme inhibitors in the treatment of diabetes".

Additionally, according to the Central Food Technological Research Institute, banana flower and pseudostem have a low glycemic index and a high content of dietary fiber and antioxidants.

Application of the flower and pseudostem showed to inhibit diabetic symptoms like hyperglycemia, polyuria, polyphagia, polydipsia, urine sugar, and body weight in the rat model.

Taken all together, an unripe banana may be used as a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of diabetes in humans, depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies.

#Healthyfood #KaleJuices Reduces the Risk of Coronary Artery Disease by Lowering the Levels of Blood Cholesterols, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular diseases are a class of conditions associated with heart and blood vessels. Anything that affects the normal heart and blood vessel functioning is considered risk factors of the diseases, including the heart's muscle, valves or rhythm, and blockage of blood vessels.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 610,000 people die of heart disease every year that's 1 in every 4 deaths. The disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the location that affects the functioning of the heart and blood vessels, including atherosclerosis caused by the blockade of the blood vessel due to the accumulation of plaques in the arteries and arrhythmias caused by abnormal heart rhythms.

Coronary artery disease is a condition of narrowing coronary arteries that lead to blockage of the blood flow in the arteries as a result of hardening arterial walls, cholesterol building up in the arteries, chemicals, such as cadmium clog up arteries, etc.

The disease has been found to affect the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.

Coronary artery disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States.
According to statistics, coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease that causes the death of over 370,000 people every year, representing 28% of all death in the United States.

Sadly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately, 735,000 Americans have a heart attack each year.

What causes plaques to build up on the arterial is debatable. However, researchers suggested that the Western diet is associated with a significantly increased risk of coronary artery disease.

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belonging to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. Since kale leave is highly nutritious and easy to grow with a range of long seasons from the middle of winter through the beginning of spring, it is cultivated as food in most parts of Europe.

In finding a potential whole for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers evaluated the effect of 3-month kale (Brassica oleracea acephala) juice supplementation on coronary artery disease.

The study included 32 men with hypercholesterolemia (> 200 mg/dL) recruited after annual health examinations among the faculty and staff at the university and consumed 150 mL of kale juice per day for a 12-week intervention period.

Based on the blood samples used to evaluate biochemical profiles before and after supplementation, researchers found that
* Serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, and HDL- to LDL-cholesterol ratio were significantly increased by 27% and 52%, respectively.

* The LDL-cholesterol concentration and the atherogenic index were significantly reduced by 10% (P=0.0007) and 24.2% (P<0.0001), respectively without affecting body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, or nutrient intakes after three months of supplementation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Regular meals supplementation with kale juice can favorably influence serum lipid profiles and antioxidant systems, and hence contribute to reducing the risks of coronary artery disease in male subjects with hyperlipidemia".

Taken together, kale may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease in patients with hyperlipidemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
