#Antioxidant #Chrysin, a Flavonoid Foound in #Honey Inhibits the Onset of #Melanoma #SkinCancer, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of skin melanoma cancer, according to some studies.
Skin melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the alternation of pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. However, in rare cases, melanoma can also occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye.

The 4 most common types of skin melanoma include
1. Superficial spreading melanoma, the type of cancer that has a tendency to spread grow outward and spread across the surface of the skin, accounting for 70% of all melanoma skin cancer.

2, Nodular melanoma normally grows down into the skin and has a tendency to spread more quickly than other types of melanoma skin cancer.

3. Lentigo malignant melanoma, most common in the older population, makes up approximately 15% of all melanoma skin cancer.

4. Acral lentiginous melanoma, most common in people with darker skin. Cancer first moves outward before spreading deeper into the skin.

According to the statistic, melanoma skin cancer is increasing and is anticipated to continue to rise. In the United States, approximately 70,230 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed, causing the death of 8,790.

The causes of melanoma skin cancer are associated with the alternation of the pigment cells in the skin. Why some people are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not even share similar health conditions, family history, and ethnicity.

However, according to epidemiological studies, genetic mutation inherited from the parent, exposure to environmental toxins, and sun UV rays are the most commonly associated with the increased risk of melanoma skin cancer.

In fact, people who inherited the BRAF oncogene have a substantial risk to develop melanoma skin cancer and the most common genes which have been primarily linked to familial melanoma, are CDKN2A and CDK4.

Dr. Miriam Potrony, the lead author in the study "Update in genetic susceptibility in melanoma" suggested that 10% of melanoma skin cancer are genetically related and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A), identified as the first melanoma susceptibility gene more than 20 years ago, is the main high-risk gene for melanoma.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener many people.

In finding a natural ingredient for the reduction of risk and treatment of melanoma skin cancer, researchers launched an investigation to determine the effect of chrysin, a flavonoid present in honey, propolis, against human uveal melanoma cell lines (M17 and SP6.5)

Injection of chrysin reduced the viability of cultured human melanoma cells in a dose-dependent manner (0, 10, 30, and 100 µM) with IC50 at 28.3 and 35.8 µM in SP6.5 and M17 cell lines, respectively.

Chrysin at 30-100 µM levels selectively reduced the viability of melanoma cells without affecting the viability of nearby healthy cells.

Chrysin inhibited melanoma skin cancer cells through the proteins associated with cancer cell death and degradation.

These results indicated chrysin induces apoptosis of human uveal melanoma cells via the mitochondrial signaling pathway in the increased mitochondrial permeability

In the finding the scientist evidence for the Manuka honey effect in the treatment of cancer, researchers at the UAE University conducted an investigation to examine the anti-cancer effect on three different cancer cell lines, murine melanoma (B16.F1) and colorectal carcinoma (CT26) as well as human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells in vitro.

Manuka honey has a potent anti-proliferative effect on all three cancer cell lines in a time- and dose-dependent manner, at concentrations as low as 0.6% (w/v).

The efficacy of Manuka honey in inhibitory melanoma skin cancer was attributed to the increased expression of pro-apoptotic and cell death programming activity.

Treatment with manuka honey alone resulted in about 33% inhibition of tumor growth, which correlated with a histologically observable increase in tumor apoptosis without inducing any side effects.

Dr. Fernandez-Cabezudo MJ, the lead author said, "Although better control of tumor growth was observed in animals treated with paclitaxel alone or in combination with manuka honey (61% inhibition), a dramatic improvement in host survival was seen in the co-treatment group".

In support of the above differentiation, a joint study led by Nazarbayev University also suggested that honey processed the anti-carcinogenic effects in vitro and in a murine model of melanoma.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention of melanoma skin cancer and a secondary therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of melanoma skin cancer.

3,3'‑#Diindolylmethane (DIM) Inhibits Oxidativestress Associated with #Kidney Injury in Vivo, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organ in the human body not only filter out blood but also balances body fluids by eliminating them and removing them through urinary secretion.
Additionally, the kidney accompanied by the liver and skin form also detoxes the toxins in the body.

Kidney disease is a medical condition associated with a gradually reduced function of the kidney.

Kidney diseases can be classified into 2 types
* Acute kidney disease is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage associated with reduced kidney function in keeping the right balance of fluid in the body, that lasts a few hours or a few days.

* Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition of kidney damage, leading to a decreased level of kidney function that lasts more than three months.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

Renal protection is a strategy that protects the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

Renal toxicity or nephrotoxicity in most cases is toxicity in the kidneys caused by toxic chemicals and medications.

The most common symptoms of renal toxicity may cause reduced kidney function in eliminating toxins, leading to a reduced amount of urine. swelling of your legs, ankles, and feet from the retention of fluids.

In a serious case, the condition can also result in unexplained shortness of breath. excessive drowsiness or fatigue. persistent nausea. confusion. pain or pressure in your chest.

Depending on the severity of kidney damage, kidney disease can range from mild to severe, including kidney failure.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of renal diseases, researchers examined the effect of 3,3'‑Diindolylmethane (DIM), a naturally derived indole compound found in the Brassica family of vegetables on kidney injury.

The study included male BALB/c mouse models of AKI that were established using intraperitoneal injections of 10 mg/kg LPS followed by the DIM (40 mg/kg) administered intraperitoneally 24 and 2 h before LPS exposure.
According to the tested analysis,
* DIM significantly mitigated histopathological changes in the kidneys and improved the levels of blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine.

* DIM also suppressed the LPS‑induced production of reactive oxygen species in the induction of cell apoptosis.

* DIM treatment also significantly decreased the expression of NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) and NOX4 which results in oxidative stress in LPS‑treated mice.

More precisely, DIM protected the kidney cell integrity against all parameters expressed by the injection of LPS.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Therefore, DIM may exert its renoprotective actions by inhibiting NOX‑mediated oxidative stress and the apoptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells"

Taken together, Brassica rapa vegetable may be considered supplements for the prevention of kidney injury, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Broccoli Inhibits the Parameters Associated with Liver Cancer, Damage and Injury, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is the early stage of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver, other than excessive use of alcohol.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is asymptomatic until the condition is developed into cirrhosis, the condition that causes advanced liver scars and reduced the performance of the liver.

In other words, if more than 5% – 10% percent of your liver’s weight is fat, you have a fatty liver (steatosis).
The prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among the more affluent regions of China, is approximately 15%. The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taken into account.

In the US, over 100 million people have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the condition is more doubled over the past 20 years. Today, the disease also is also prevalent in liver disease in children.

Most people at the early stage of NAFLD are asymptomatic. However, as the disease progresses into the later stage, most patients experience symptoms of right upper abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and/or malaise, and jaundice(20) with yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of dietary broccoli protects against fatty liver development.

The study included male 15-day-old C57BL/6J mice that were given DEN and placed on a Western or Western+10% Broccoli diet from the age of 4 weeks through 7 months. prior to exposure to the hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN).

According to the results of the analysis,* Dietary broccoli decreased hepatic triacylglycerols, NAFLD, liver damage, and tumor necrosis factor by month 5 without changing body weight or relative liver weight induced by hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN).

* However, broccoli feeding did not have low liver carcinogenesis, observed in 100% of tested mice.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " We conclude that broccoli, a good source of sulforaphane, slows the progression of hepatic lipidosis, but not tumourigenesis in this robust model".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered functional food for the prevention of fatty liver, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Heterodimeric 13.8 kDa Napkin-like Polypeptide Found in #ChineseCabbage Processes Anti-Leukemia (L1210) Cells through Its Immunomodulatory Activity, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of diseases caused by alteration of DNA that initiates healthy cells to grow disorderly and uncontrollably.

At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect healthy cells of other tissue and organs.

Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases.

According to a statistic from the Canada Government, approximately 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease.

The most common types of cancer in Canada include lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. And these 4 cancers account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada.

Believe it or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Depending on types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.

The American Cancer Society wrote, "Cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" and " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release substances that cause blood clots in veins of the legs".

DNA alternation is the major cause of diseases.

Proliferation is a condition of rapid cell multiplication used by cancer cells to grow indefinitely.

Normal cycle multiplication has a limited cell cycle division before replacing by the new cell.

In cancer cells, the cell cycle division is unlimited

In cancer, antiproliferative activity is a process to inhibit the growth of cancer cells

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

To findings a natural wholefood for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the heterodimeric 13.8 kDa napkin-like polypeptide that has previously been isolated from Chinese cabbage (Brassica parachinensis) seed on leukemia (L1210) cells.

According to the tested analysis, the selected compound stimulated nitrite production by mouse peritoneal macrophages against the tested cells.

In other words, polypeptide blocks the cell cycle division activity by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation.

Furthermore, the tested compound also stimulated the immune macrophages to reduce the viability of leukemia (L1210) cells through its immunomodulatory activity.

\
More precisely, the heterodimeric 13.8 kDa napin-like polypeptide processes a strong anti-cancer cell proliferative property.

Taken together, cabbage contains high levels of phytochemicals which process anticancer cell proliferative activities, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthy #Cocoa #Polyphenol #Extracts Process Antiproliferative and Anti-Metastatice Effects in Cancers, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer cell proliferation is the rapid reproduction of invasive cells in malignant tumors.
In other words, instead of dividing with a number of times before replacing by new cells, the cancer cells can divide indefinitely.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ, caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or specific organ in the body due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Anti-proliferative activity is the process to inhibit cell growth and antiproliferative effects on tumor cells.

The cocoa bean or simply cocoa is the dried and fully fermented seed of Theobroma cacao, which appeared in different cultures worldwide for hundreds of years, particularly in many ancient South American countries.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the inhibitory effect of different cocoa polyphenol extracts, alone or combined with beta-sitosterol, on two human prostate cancer cell lines (nonmetastatic 22Rv1 cells and metastatic DU145 cells) and a normal human prostate cell line (RWEP-1).

According to the experimental analysis of cells treated independently with five products from 1 to 72 h: (1/) synthetic beta-sitosterol, (2/) a cocoa polyphenols extract supplemented with beta-sitosterol, (3/) three different cocoa polyphenols extracts naturally containing beta-sitosterol, at the highest tested concentration, cocoa polyphenols extracts induced a complete inhibition of growth of metastatic and nonmetastatic cancer cell lines.

Furthermore, cocoa polyphenol extracts alone were more active against local cancer cells than against metastatic cells,

However, at the highest tested concentration, cocoa polyphenols extract alone is not effective on normal prostate cell lines.

On the other hand, beta-sitosterol induced low growth inhibition of both cancer cell lines, compared to cocoa polyphenol extracts which are significantly more active and showed strong and fast inhibition of cell growth than beta-sitosterol alone.

There is no synergy or addition that was observed when beta-sitosterol was tested together with the cocoa polyphenols extract.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Our results show that cocoa polyphenols extracts have an antiproliferative effect on prostate cancer cell growth but not on normal cells, at the highest tested concentration".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Fermented #SoyMilk Inhibits the Growth of Estrogen-Receptor-Positive #BreastCancer in Vivos, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly and uncontrollably in the breast tissue. At the early stage, most cases of breast cancer start in the cells of the inner lining tissue of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
There are also rare cases of breast cancer that start in other areas of the breast

The cause of breast cancer is the result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the breast.

According to statistics, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the US alone

At the advanced stage, breast cancer cells caused by the alternation of DNA can travel far away from the primary site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most patients the early may have a lump when touching with no symptoms.

Patients who inherited the genetic preposition of BRCA1 and 2 are associated with over 60% of the risk of breast cancer.

However, an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are some of the preventable risk factors that form a major cause of breast cancer onset.

According to statistics, the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Detection of tumorigenesis through self-observation is still the best approach to discovering breast cancer in an early stage.

The risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8. As of today, there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the US.

The 5 years of survival rate of localized breast cancer are close to 100%.

The risk factors of breast cancer can be divided into 2 groups
* Preventable risk factors include exposure to ionizing radiation, hormone replacement therapy, use of oral contraceptives, alcohol, being obese and physical inactivity.

* Unpreventable risk factors include family and personal history, age, race, genetic preposition, dense breast, and reproductive history.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-tumor activity researchers examined the effect of fermented soy milk beverage on breast cancer.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Selected fermented soy milk showed a strong impact on breast cancer through its estrogenic and anti-estrogenic -dependent activity.

* Some probiotic strains reportedly release bioactive metabolites through the fermentation of milk, and the released molecules can prevent murine breast tumor growth by stimulating an immune response.

* Fermented soy milk beverage containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus lactis, or Bifidobacteria inhibited the growth of estrogen-receptor-positive MCF-7 human breast cancer in mice, associated with cytotoxicity generated by the reactive oxygen species.

* In vivo, the fermentation of soy milk using Bifidobacterium breve increased the content of isoflavone aglycone, and this fermented soy milk beverage inhibited rat mammary carcinogenesis.

Collectively, researchers said, "APPH can, therefore, be considered as an efficient therapeutic agent to ameliorate high-fat diet-related liver damages".

Taken together, fermented Soy may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Withaferin A (WA) Isolated from #Herbal Ashwagandha inhibits Parameters and Pathways Associated with the Onset of Cancer, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the irregular cell growth on the body tissue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue and do not exert any symptoms at the early stage.

At the later stage, the larger size tumor may press on the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, causing localized severe bleeding and pain accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers, including the unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal problems.

Most cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Pre-cancer is a medical condition that likely develops into cancer if untreated.
Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a precancerous condition and the most common plasma cell disorder.

In other words, monoclonal myeloma gammopathies is a precancerous condition that may cause myeloma, a cancer of white blood cell disorder.

Multiple myelomas. also known as plasma cell myeloma or Kahler's disease, is a type of abnormal growth of plasma cells collected in the none marrow where they grow and multiply to interfere with the production of normal blood cells.

According to the study by the Harvard Medical School, paraprotein, an abnormal antibody produced by the plasma cell myeloma not only can cause kidney problem but also interference with the Roche automated total bilirubin, including total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), or HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C).

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound that processes the anti-cancer property, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A (WA) isolated from the plant Withania somnifera, antitumor effects on a multiple myeloma cell model.

According to the results from Ingenuity Pathway Analysis and Western blot, WA exerted a significant action against monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and related disorders.

Furthermore, WA showed a strong and massive blockage on both proteotoxic and oxidative stress response pathways by targeting protein networks such as multicatalytic proteinase complex, associated with the risk of monoclonal gammopathy.

In other words, WA mediated apoptosis is preceded by simultaneous targeting of cellular stress response pathways like proteasome degradation, autophagy and unfolded protein stress response.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the combined approach can be used for other types of cancer and/or other promising multifunctional compounds, thereby increasing the potential development of new antitumor therapies".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandhaprocessed abundantly WA may be considered a functional herb for the modulation of the monoclonal myeloma gammopathies, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
