In finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the liver-protective effects of lycopene.

The study included BALB/c male mice divided into three equal groups: control, Concanavalin A (Con A), and Con A and lycopene the control group mice received the only vehicle by intraperitoneal injection, the Con A group mice were given Con A, and group mice received Con A and lycopene.

The Mice group treated by Con A showed significant liver damage observed by elevated levels of oxidative stress markers such as Con A administration increased histopathological damage, and the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT).

Furthermore, Con A also stimulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6, and immune response pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α.

According to the analysis of the effect of lycopene on the Con A and lycopene group, all parameter associated with liver damage induced by Con A was significantly reduced by the administration of lycopene.

More importantly, lycopene not only inhibited the negative effect of Con A on liver injury but also promoted liver cell viability and cell growth.


In other words, lycopene processed anti-liver toxicity activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results of this study revealed that lycopene might be a useful hepatoprotective agent for reducing increased proinflammatory cytokine levels, and for increasing cell viability and cell growth".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the promotion of liver protection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#ManukaHoney Decreases the Levels of MDA Associated with the Risk of Ulcers, Researchers Show

Honey may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues", and

"Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping with this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

These results suggested that regardless of the causes of the overexpression of free radicals, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants from a supplement, herbs, fruits, and vegetables can be beneficial in restoring the healthy ratio of free radicals and antioxidants and preventing the onset of oxidative stress.

In order to understand the honey antioxidant activity which has been under intensified study by the science community, a joint study led by the researchers conducted was conducted in an animal model.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats were randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

Honey-treated rats displayed a clinically significant decrease in the ulcer index by completely protecting the mucosa from lesions and preserving gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Application of manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the marker of oxidative stress and plasma TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 concentrations, the set of proinflammatory cytokines produced by the ethanol injection.

The results were attributed to the manuka honey in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol in the tested rats.

The finding suggested that manuka honey exerted a strong antioxidant activity by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the treatment group.

In other words, manuka honey inhibited the oxidative stress caused by the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the onset of the ulcer.

Further differentiation to reaffirm the effects of manuka honey in the inhibition of gastric ulcer in the rat model, researchers examined three different concentrations of honey applied to the tested rats.

During the experiment, researchers found that all 3 different concentrations display a strong effect in It reducing the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) compared to the untreated control group.

In other words, manuka honey protects the rat stomach by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals and pro-inflammatory cytokines in inducing oxidative stress.

Application manuka honey also showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and non-enzymatic (GSH) antioxidants which were reduced due to ulcer and levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

The Flow cytometry assay also indicated that treatment of rats with manuka honey has normalized cell cycle distribution and significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The information collected strongly supports the use of manuka honey for the treatment of chronic ulcers and preservation of mucosal glycoproteins.
Dr. Almasaudi SB wrote in the final report, "Its (manuka honey) effects are due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that resulted in a significant reduction of the gastric mucosal MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and caused an elevation in IL-10 levels.


Taken together, there is no doubt that manuka honey high in antioxidants can be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

#Curcumin Found in #Turmeric Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of #DiabeticCardiomyopathy, According to Studies

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication found in patients with diabetes associated with reducing the heart function in circulating blood through the body, leading to heart failure and increased accumulation of fluid in the lungs.
Diabetic cardiomyopathy is classified into different types, depending on the damage that has been affected, including
* Microangiopathy is a disorder that affects small blood vessels, leading to impaired myocardial blood flow reserve.

* Autonomic neuropathy is a disorder that affects the nerves that manage everyday body functions, leading to abnormal blood pressure, and heart rate.


* Endothelial dysfunction is a disorder associated with the damage of vascular endothelium. The condition is considered an early event of cardiovascular disease.

The most common causes of diabetic cardiomyopathy are myocardial dysfunction in the absence of overt clinical coronary artery disease, valvular disease, and other conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia.

At the early stage, most patients with diabetic cardiomyopathy are asymptomatic. However, mild left ventricular diastolic dysfunction with little effect on ventricular filling and concomitant hypertension or coronary artery disease has been found to be the early indication of diabetic cardiomyopathy in patients with diabetes.

Epidemiologically, the most common risk factors that increase the risk of diabetic cardiomyopathy. are insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperglycemia.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no effective treatment for diabetic cardiomyopathy. Medication used for the treatment of the condition is focusing on glycemic control and management of heart failure symptoms.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy(DCM), researchers examined the effect of curcumin on modulating DCM and the mechanisms involved.

The study included an experimental diabetic rat model induced by a low dose of streptozotocin(STZ) combined with high energy intake in rats, followed by curcumin orally administrated at a dose of 100 or 200 mg · kg(-1) · d(-1), respectively.

Before the treatment of curcumin, induced DCM rats showed a declined systolic myocardial performance associated with myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis accompanied by metabolism abnormalities, aberrant myocardial enzymes, and increased AGEs (advanced glycation end-products) accumulation.
Increased levels of ROS and depletion of antioxidant enzymes were also found in the rat before pretreatment with curcumin, observed by increased oxidative stress markers.

Furthermore, levels of pro-apoptotic proteins and proinflammatory cytokines were also found to significantly increase in DCM rats.

After the injection of curcumin, researchers found that remarkably, the bioactive compound attenuated myocardial dysfunction, cardiac fibrosis, AGEs accumulation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in the heart of diabetic rats.

In other words, curcumin protected the heart of DCM rats against the onset of diabetic cardiomyopathy(DCM).

Based on the results, researchers said, "These results suggest that curcumin may have great therapeutic potential in the treatment of DCM, and perhaps other cardiovascular disorders, by attenuating fibrosis, oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell death".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.


Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
