Varicose veins are the medical condition in which the superficial veins have become enlarged and twisted.
The condition has been found to induce bleeding or superficial thrombophlebitis if left untreated.
The most common causes of varicose veins are found just under the skin in the legs, leading to the symptoms of fullness and pain in the affected location accompanied by symptoms of achy or heavy feeling in the legs. The pain is also worsened after a long time of sitting or standing for a long time and skin discoloration around the area.
Some patients with painful varicose veins also experience symptoms of burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, swelling in the lower legs, and itching.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of varicose veins, aging due to wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help regulate blood flow may be one of the most common risk factors.
Dr. Caggiati A in the study of age-related variations of varicose veins, wrote, "Varicose SVs were more frequent in the older group (62%) than in younger one (39%) owing to a higher prevalence of limbs with combined saphenous veins (SVs) and Stributaries of the SVs (STVs) varicosities (respectively, 59% and 37%)".
And, "varicose disease may progressively extend in an antegrade fashion, spreading from the STVs to the SVs".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), researchers compared the efficacy of Pycnogenol, venoruton, troxerutin, the complex diosmin-hesperidin, Antistax, Mirtoselect (bilberry), escin, and the combination Venoruton-Pycnogenol (VE-PY) against the therapeutic compressions.
The study included 1,051 patients who completed the registry. During the experiment, there are no safety or tolerability problems observed.
Mirtoselect (bilberry) showed a significant effect on skin flux but to a lesser extent compared to those of Venoruton, Pycnogenol, and the combination VE-PY.
The edema score was decreased more effectively with the combination and with Pycnogenol compared to the other treatment group including the Mirtoselect (bilberry).
According to the improvement in symptoms score, Pycnogenol and compression showed a larger decrease in oxidative stress compared to the Pycnogenol, Venoruton, Mirtoselect (bilberry), and with the VE-PY combination.
However, the efficacy of Pycnogenol and the combination are competitive with stockings that do not have the same tolerability in warmer climates compared to other groups.
Taken together, Mirtoselect (bilberry) may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of varicose veins diseases with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fully Organic Growth #Onions Process a Strong Antioxidant Activty Compared to Conventional Growth Onions, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Antioxidant enzymes either produced by the host body or from dietary sources play a critical role in the prevention of oxidative stress by balancing the expression of free radicals.
Free radicals are everywhere. Any chemical containing oxygen molecules including environmental and behavioral factors such as exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals and smoking can dramatically increase the number of free radicals in the body.
Free radicals internally are produced during the course of cell metabolism.
Oxidative stress is caused by the overexpression of free radicals compared to the low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host. Over time, oxidative stress can induce proteins, lipids, and cell damage, leading to the facilitation of heart diseases, diabetes, stroke, cancer...
In other words, the chain reaction of free radicals that cannot be stopped is a leading cause of oxidative stress-induced chronic disease.
More precisely, if the antioxidant enzymes no longer can perform the function to balance the free radicals in the body, oxidative stress occurs.
Some researchers suggested the rise of oxidative stress in the US may be correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Ildiko Erdelyi wrote, "WD induces inflammatory changes, expression profiles of a broad spectrum of inflammatory proteins were performed and numbers of lamina propria macrophages were determined with semiquantitative morphometry".
And, "WD significantly alters the local colonic immune response. Collectively, these data suggest that consumption of a WD interferes with networks of related biological response pathways involving colonic lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and the immune response".
The results strongly suggested that by maintaining a healthy ratio of antioxidants and free radicals, diseases associated with oxidative stress can be preventable.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effect of conventional, organic, and mixed cultivation practices on the content of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity in two varieties of onion grown over 4 years in a split-plot factorial systems comparison trial.
According to the experiment, levels of total phenolics and total flavonoids were significantly different between organic and conventional production systems.
Levels of antioxidants such as levels of total phenolics, and total flavonoids are significantly higher under fully organic growth compared to conventional growth.
In other words, if you are looking for the best onion with antioxidant activity, organic cultivation onion is a better choice
Based on the findings, researchers said, "organic cultivation practices resulted in significantly higher levels of potentially bioactive compounds in onion".
Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Tomatoes Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Risk of #MetabolicSyndromes and Obesity in Vivo
Kyle J. Norton
Glucose intolerance is a condition of the cluster of metabolic conditions associated with a higher than normal blood glucose levels.
Glucose tolerance is a test that examines how fast glucose is cleared from the blood.
Glucose intolerance is found in people with pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome, the conditions of elevated blood glucose that is below the diabetes
* Impaired fasting glucose (IFG), a fasting blood glucose level that is above 6.0 mmol/L
* Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), a blood glucose level that is over 7.8 mmol/L 2 hours after consuming 75g of glucose.
Glucose intolerance has been found to induce the risk of insulin resistance and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Most common symptoms of IGT are feeling thirsty, being tired or lethargic, frequent urination, and itchiness around the genitals.,
Out of many prevalent factors associated with the risk of IGT, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong and negative impact on the rise of glucose intolerance.
Dr. April J. Stull, wrote, "Glucose intolerance is a global health concern that encompasses glucose metabolism abnormalities such as impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and type 2 diabetes (T2D)".
And "The progression from IGT to T2D can be prevented or delayed by modifying the lifestyles in high-risk individuals, and these health benefits are well documented in various ethnicities with prediabetes across the world".
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a phytochemical for the improvement of glucose tolerance, researchers examined the effects of dry tomato peel (DTP) on diabetes induced by a high-saturated-fat (HSF) diet in vivo.
The study included BALB/c male mice (n=40) (8 weeks old, weighing 22.2±1.0 g) randomly divided into four treatment groups (10 mice/group): (a) high-fat control diet (HF Ctrl), which contains sunflower oil as a sole source of fat; (b) HSF/high-cholesterol (HC) diet; (c) HSF/HC diet supplemented with 9% DTP and (d) HSF/HC diet supplemented with 17% DTP for 12 weeks.
According to the results of the tested assay, supplementation with DTP not only increased plasma lycopene concentration but also reduced the development of indicators of metabolic syndrome which was found in non-DTP treated groups.
In other words, DTP supplementation demonstrated a beneficial effect on glucose tolerance by increasing insulin sensitivity in the tested subject.
Also, in high-fat diet (HF)-induced obese mice treated with tomato vinegar beverage (TVB), researchers found that TVB not only showed a significant anti-obesity activity by decreasing fatty acid β-oxidation and carnitine palmitoyltransferase activities in HF-fed mice but also improved glucose tolerance, hyperinsulinemia compared to control.
More precisely, TVB exerted anti-diabetic effect by TVB significantly increased glucokinase activity and decreased glucose-6-phosphatase activity in the liver, associated with enhanced glucose metabolism in obese mice.
The findings strongly suggested that TVB inhibits glucose intolerance in obese mice through several mechanisms, including glucose metabolism.
Taken together, tomatoes processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplement for the improvement of glucose tolerance, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Tomatoes's #Lycopene Prevents 4-(N-methyl-N-nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone NNK-Induced Liver and Lung Damage, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Primary lung cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the lung.
The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest, with the function of inspiration that takes oxygen from incoming air to the blood and releases carbon dioxide.
In other words, the lung exchanges carbon dioxide from the blood to oxygen.
Furthermore, the lung also filters out a small blood clot, balancing the Ph levels in the body, protecting the body from infection as well as speeching.
According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 228,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019 or 1 in 16 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetime.
About 60% to 65% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers.
Most cases of lung cancer at the early stage are asymptomatic due to the very small size of the tumor. However, at the later stage, the oversize of the tumor that not only reduces the lung function and press on the nearby nerve cells and blood vessels, leading to symptoms of lung cancer, accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
The most common symptoms of lung cancer include a persistent cough, cough-up blood with rust-colored sputum (spit or phlegm) due to the oversize tumor that has pressed on nearby blood vessels, chest pain due to the oversize tumor that has pressed on the nerve cells and shortness of breath. Feeling tired or weak.
The other lung, adrenal gland, bones, brain, and liver are most common in primary lung cancer metastasis.
Some researchers suggested lung cancer in the US may be correlated to the rise of obesity.
Dr. Khemayanto Hidayat, the lead scientist said, "Several meta-analyses of observational studies have been performed to examine the association between general obesity, as measured by body mass index (BMI), and lung cancer. These meta-analyses suggest an inverse relationship between high BMI and this cancer. In contrast to general obesity, abdominal obesity appears to play a role in the development of lung cancer".
\
And, "greater WC was associated with increased lung cancer risk among never smokers (RR 1.11; 95% CI 1.00, 1.23), former smokers (RR 1.12; 95% CI 1.03, 1.22) and current smokers (RR 1.16; 95% CI 1.08, 1.25). The summary RRs for the highest versus lowest categories of WC and WHR were 1.32 (95% CI 1.13, 1.54; I2 = 18.2%, p-heterogeneity = 0.281) and 1.10 (95% CI 1.00, 1.23; I2 = 24.2%, p-heterogeneity = 0.211), respectively".
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In finding a natural compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers in the cancer team at Tufts University investigated the effects of tomato's lycopene against tobacco carcinogen 4-(N-methyl-N-nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) induced lesions in both lungs in an animal model.
The study included elected male ferrets (6 groups, n = 8-10) who were treated either with NNK (50 mg/kg BW, i.p., once a month for four consecutive months) or saline with or without dietary lycopene supplementation (2.2 and 6.6 mg/kg BW/day, respectively) for 26 weeks.
Before the treatment of lycopene, NNK-exposure ferrets showed higher incidences of lung tumors, HCC, and steatohepatitis, and elevations in bilirubin and AST levels.
Lycopene supplementation treatment at two doses prevented NNK-induced lung toxicity and inflammation. The expression of levels of CYP2E1 in the liver associated with the metabolism of xenobiotics in the liver was also inhibited by the injection of lycopene.
In other words, lycopene prevented the NNK in the induction of lung and liver damage in the tested animals.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "The present study provided strong experimental evidence that the tobacco carcinogen NNK can induce both HCC and steatohepatitis in the ferrets and can be a useful model for studying tobacco carcinogen-associated NAFLD and liver cancer".
Furthermore, in a mouse model associated with colon cancer metastatic to the lungs, Dr. Chattopadhyay A, the lead scientist wrote, "adding 0.06% of Tg6F, but not a control tomato concentrate (EV), to standard mouse chow reduced tumor-associated neutrophils by 94 ± 1.1%, and reduced tumor burden by two-thirds".
Taken together, cooked tomatoes processed with abundantly bioactive compound lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of complications caused by oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Scientists may have found a tasty whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and prostate cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia happened mostly in the older age population group is a condition of an enlarged prostate that can cause some serious urinary symptoms, such as blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder.
In many cases, an enlarged prostate can also induce bladder, urinary tract, or kidney problems and prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is slow growth and medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the prostate tissue.
Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate gland
At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell can travel a distance away from the prostate to infect other healthy tissue, through blood and fluid circulation.
The causes of prostate cancer are unknown. Epidemiologically, researchers do know that the increase in age, ethnicity, family history, the genetic preposition of BRCA1 and/or BRCA2, and agent orange exposure is associated with an increased risk of the disease.
Some researchers suggested that poor eating habits and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. Therefore, by changing to a healthy diet, the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer may be preventable.
Dr. Devrim E, in the concern of the widespread of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), over the last few decades said, "garlic and its preparations have been used for the treatment of prostate cancer and relief of BPH symptoms for decades. It is thought that the mechanism(s) through which garlic may show anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects".
These results suggested adding garlic to your diet daily can decrease the incidence of both benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer with no side effects.
Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa and belongs to the family Rosaceae. They have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.
Starting at age 40, the levels of the by-product prolactin of testosterone in men increase, stimulating the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that causes the conversion of testosterone to dihydro-testosterones DHT triggering prostate enlargement and other problems. Therefore in order to prevent the symptoms of enlarged prostate is to naturally impend the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

Unfortunately, aging is not the only cause of enlarged prostate. Prostate Cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the prostate.
The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.
With an aim to find the natural compound which processes the potency to inhibit benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common disease of the prostate that affects men as they age, and a risk factor for developing prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers at the Monash University looked into the anti-BPH activity of lycopene found abundantly in the strawberry by searching the database of medical literature.
Out of many medical studies that were examined, only 8 published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing lycopene to placebo (or other interventions) for the treatment of BPH and prostate cancer met the inclusion criteria selected for this systematic review.
A meta-analysis of two studies indicated a decrease in PSA levels in men diagnosed with prostate cancer, who received lycopene compared to placebo.
In a human prostate epithelial cell line (P21) and two tumor cell lines (P21 tumor cell line 1 and 2) derived from the same patient, and a normal human breast epithelial cell line (B42) and a tumor line derived from it (B42 clone 16), researchers examined the cytotoxic effects of strawberry polyphenols.
By applying the polyphenol-rich extract derived from strawberry or anthocyanin or tannin-rich sub-fractions to the cell lines in doses varying from 50 to 1.5 microg/ml, researchers discovered the strawberry extract inhibited over 50% in cell survival of both the normal and the tumor lines with the doses of approximately 5 microg/ml.
The extracts were found to exert cytotoxicity to peripheral blood human lymphocytes with doses higher levels 20 microg/ml for a similar effect of a 50% reduction in cell survival.
Compound analysis assay suggested that the cytotoxicity retained in the tannin-rich fraction was considerably more toxic to all cells (normal or tumor cell lines or lymphocytes) than the anthocyanin-rich fraction tannin-rich fraction.
Furthermore, In LNCaP and PC-3) tumor cell lines, strawberry extract with concentrations of 50 microg/ml was required for a 50% reduction in cell survival.
The finding suggested that strawberries processed with high amounts of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer without inducing any side effects

#UrsolicAcid Exerts Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Biofilm Activity Against Chronic Infectious Diseases, Researchers Reveal
Kyle J. Norton
Infection is a condition caused by a harmful microbial invasion of the body's tissues.
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacterias are very adaptable, and overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.
Out of trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, only a few cause diseases in humans. Believe it or not, our gut contains trillion microorganisms, most of which are bacteria.
The most common symptoms of bacterial infection are redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.
In severe cases, the patient may also experience symptoms of swollen lymph glands.
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated successfully if the types of bacteria that cause the infection are identified.
A biofilm is a system that can be adapted internally to environmental conditions by its inhabitants. In other words, biofilm-forming from bacteria is one of the common forms of bacterial infection affecting up to 80% of human bacterial infections.
In biology, biofilm is used by bacteria as a natural defense mechanism of bacteria to survive under harsh environments, by attaching to a solid surface in a large community, including the skin, teeth, and mucosa.
Bacterial initiates biofilm formation with an aim to greatly enhance survival in hosts and cause chronic infections, leading to long-term inflammation and tissue damage.
The formation of a biofilm of bacteria may go through 2 stages, the adhesion phase is the stage that the bacteria attached to the surface or accumulates on a surface, After the adhesion phase, the bacteria enter the colonial phase, where the bacteria continue to grow, leading to the formation of dense bacterial aggregates.
Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic infectious diseases, researchers examined the effect of UA on carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae (CREC).
According to the analysis,
* UA has a MIC of 0.1 mg/mL against CREC.
* UA treatment inhibited CREC growth and impaired membrane integrity of CREC cells, observed by the decrease in intracellular ATP level, pH, and membrane potential and distinctive deformation in cellular morphology.
* UA exerted a significant antibacterial effect on the biofilm formation of CREC and inactivated CREC cells within biofilms.
After taking other factors into account, researchers said, "These findings reveal that UA has potent antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against CREC and, thus, can be used as a natural food preservative to reduce CREC-related infections".
Taken altogether, Ursolic acid may be considered adjunct therapy in the treatment of bacterial infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Ursolic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

#CruciferousVegetables Exert a Strong Antioxidant Activty Against the Risk of #CardiovascularDiseases (CVD), Scientists Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of disease.
In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.
According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.
Cardiovascular diseases are chronic diseases that refer to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world. According to statistics, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015.
In other words, anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.
The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, which causes damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.
Hyperlipidemia and hypertension are the risk factors of the diseases.
According to the statistics cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.
Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.
According to statistics, heart disease is the second leading cause of death, claiming more than 48,000 lives every year.in Canada.
Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.
In finding a potential remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers the effect of sulforaphane against cardiovascular disease via Nrf2 activation.
According to the results of the experiment,
* Sulforaphane (SFN) is an ITC exerted anticancer activity by both in vivo and epidemiological studies.
* SFN demonstrated strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in CVD.
* SFN-activated NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) that serves as a defense mechanism against oxidative stress and electrophilic toxicants by inducing more than a hundred cytoprotective proteins, including antioxidants and phase II detoxifying enzymes.
Based on the results, researchers said, "the evidence from clinical studies and animal experiments relating to the potential mechanisms by which SFN modulates Nrf2 activation and protects against CVD".
Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of CVD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
